Violet Elizabeth Ellison

Violet Elizabeth Ellison, age 88, of Beckley, died Saturday, June 10, 2006, at Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley.

Arrangements by Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home, Beckley.

Garnette Lee Allen Hatfield

Garnette Lee Allen Hatfield was born Sept. 3, 1930 in Wyoming County, the daughter of Andrew Lee Allen and Emma Adeline Morgan. She married Homer Hatfield at a young age and bore him four children. Early in their marriage, they resided in Detroit, Michigan, and Chicago, Illinois. In 1965 they returned to their ancestral home in Wyoming County and continued to raise their children. As the years went by, they were blessed with three precious grandchildren. Homer once said that his grandchildren were no different to him than his own children. Garnette and Homer were devoted parents and grandparents.

In 1971, Garnette and Homer opened a store in Baileysville known locally as “Garnette’s Place.” They continued to operate this business for 30 years. Then on October 31, 2002, Garnette’s life changed forever when Homer passed away from a brain stem stroke. The following year, Garnette was diagnosed with colon cancer. The disease spread to her bladder but her family was hopeful that she would recover. However, tragedy struck a second time when Garnette’s only grandson, Jonathan, was called home by Heavenly Father on December 19, 2004, to join his Paw Paw Hatfield. Garnette was never the same after that. Over the past few months, the cancer spread to her brain. The prognosis was grim and Garnette was told by her doctor to make preparations. Garnette said that she wanted to die at home and that she “just wanted to be with Homer and Jonathan.” Her family finally granted her last wish and took her home to spend her final days.

Garnette was also preceded in death by one brother, Bill Allen; and five sisters, Martha Allen, Carolyn Kennedy, Julia Mabe, Bessie Omer and baby Louise Allen.

Garnette is survived by four children, Bonnie Sue Howell of Staffordsville, Kentucky, Robert Homer Hatfield of Beckley, Amber Lee Williamson of Clarksburg and Lewis Edward Hatfield of Baileysville; two granddaughters, Amanda Lee Prater of Harold, Kentucky, and Rebecca Catherine Howell of Staffordsville, Kentucky.

Garnette is survived by one brother, Arnold Allen of Clearwater, Florida; and four sisters, her twin sister, Georgia Mitchell of Baileysville, Joyce Vance of Baileysville, Mildred Prater of Enterprise and Mary Short of Clear Fork.

If there ever was a woman who personified the “perfect love of a mother,” that was Garnette. Her children and grandchildren were most important to her. Anyone who knew Garnette knew she was a unique person, special in many ways. She loved to joke and carry on with her friends and family — that was her trademark. Those who knew and loved her will forever feel a void in their lives.

She will be sadly missed by friends and family.

Service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 13, 2006 at Evans Memorial Chapel, Oceana, with the Rev. Lee Fischer officiating. Burial will follow in Beaver cemetery, Baileysville. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today, June 12, 2006 at the funeral home.
