Wilma Nadine Meadows Ratliff

Wilma Nadine Meadows Ratliff, age 77, of Shady Spring, died Saturday, June 10, 2006, at her home.

Born at Herndon, WV, on Oct. 27, 1928, she was the daughter of the late William and Leona Harvey Ramsey.

Mrs. Ratliff was a retired employee of Pinecrest Hospital as a nurse aide, and was a resident of Shady Spring for most of her adult life. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Mrs. Ratliff was preceded in death by her husbands, Paul Meadows and James Buel Ratliff; by her children, Gary Wayne and Ricky Meadows, Jimmy and Nadine Ratliff.

Surviving children are Ronnie Meadows and wife, Gail, of Brunswick, Ga., Charlie Meadows and wife, Shelby, of Shady Spring, Manuel Ratliff of Daniels and wife, Tammy, Matthew Ratliff of Tennessee, Leora Lilly and husband, Gerald, of Cool Ridge, Erma Bailey of Shady Spring, Wilma Causey and husband, Bill, of Fuquay-Varina, N.C., Yvonne Farley and husband, Kenneth, of Cool Ridge, Leona Long and husband, Stanley, of Denver, N.C.; a brother, Wesley Ramsey of Albuquerque, New Mexico; a sister, Delma Broomfield of Miami, Fla.; 24 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel with the Rev. Betty Lusk officiating. Burial will follow in the Phillips cemetery at Cool Ridge.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Jimmy Lilly, Gerald Lilly Jr., Jeffrey Moss, Steven Ratliff, Chris Farley, Adam Redden, and Carl Buckland.

Lloyd Fredrick Ruff Sr.

Lloyd Fredrick Ruff Sr., age 55, of Coal City, formerly of Packs Branch, died Saturday, June 10, 2006, at the Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley, following a long illness.

Jerry C. Spicer

HINTON — Jerry C. Spicer, 73, of 700 Temple St., died 4:50 a.m. Saturday, June 10, 2006, in Summers County ARH Hospital following a short illness.

Born July 30, 1932, at Brooks, he was the son of the late Ott Spicer and Anna Mae Harford Spicer Cashion.

Mr. Spicer was a retired clerk for the C&O Railway Co. with 41 years of service. He was a Korean War veteran with the U.S. Army, a member of the Hinton Masonic Lodge and Order of the Eastern Star. He served as Summers County Sheriff from 1969 until 1972 and was a former member of the Hinton City Council. He was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by a brother, James D. Spicer; stepfather, William F. Cashion; and an aunt, Rena Lee Meadows.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Shirley J. Fox Spicer; a daughter, Virginia LeAnn Butler and husband, Mike, of Fayetteville, N.C.; four grandchildren, Andrew, Melissa, Justin, and Jackie Butler, all of Fayetteville, N.C.; a brother, Harold Spicer of Brooks; special mother-in-law, Macil R. Fox of Hinton; three sisters-in-law, Louanna Fox of Hinton, Lora Barnes and husband, Don, of Lerona and Teresa Spicer of Jumping Branch; a special nephew, Donald R. Barnes of Morgantown; two special nieces, Kristi Taylor of Jumping Branch and Kelly Albright of Charleston; and three great nephews, Tyler Spicer, Austin and Bryce Taylor, all of Jumping Branch.

Graveside services will be 2:30 p.m. today at the Upland cemetery with Elders M.B. Wills and James Boothe officiating. Burial will follow.

Friends may call from 12 noon until 2 p.m. today at Pivont Funeral Home, Hinton.

Pallbearers will be Mike, Andrew and Justin Butler, Don Barnes, Donald R. Barnes II, Melvin Plumley, and Phillip Donnelly.

Kyle Bronco Carter

MOUNT VIEW — Kyle Bronco Carter, 93, went home to be with the Lord at 8:28 p.m. Tuesday, April 4, 2006, at Summers County Appalachian Regional Hospital in Hinton following a long illness.

Born Oct. 13, 1912, in Ryecove, Va., he was the son of the late William Hershel and Evaline Fletcher Carter.

He was a retired heavy equipment operator and a member of Hamilton Baptist Church at Hamilton, Va.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Josephine Newberry Carter; a son, Kyle McDonald Carter; three daughters, Betty Jo Carter, Rebecca Kemp Hall and husband, Ron Robin Hall and Betty Jean Smallwood Manwarren and first husband, Julian Smallwood; and a son-in-law, Sidney Clay Sweeney Sr., with whom he resided.

He is survived by his beloved wife and best friend, Betty Lou Carter; a daughter, Patricia Sweeney Moore, with whom he shared his life hopes and dreams, and husband, Richard Ellis Moore; grandchildren, Belinda Leah Hall, Jo Marie Jody Mitchell, Rebecca Jean Earhart and husband, Ben, Sidney Clay Sweeney Jr. and wife, Edna Rose, Patricia Leah Sweeney and companion, William Richmond, Julian Smallwood Jr. and wife, Marie, Kyle Smallwood and wife, Debbie, Patrick Smallwood, Beverly Smallwood and husband, Roger, Cindy Faubel, Danielle and John Lambert; great-grandchildren, Rocky Morris and companion, Amber, Rebekah Morris and companion, Ryan, Rocksand Underwood and fiance, Adam Ham, Arnyll Underwood Jr., Gerald Mitchell Jr., Benji Earhart and wife, Hope, Shannon Earhart and wife, Milisha, Cinnamon Earhart, Sierra Earhart, Jessi Sweeney, Laikon Sweeney, Makayla Sweeney and Atlantis Jade Sweeney; great-great-grandchildren, Nathan, Jacob and Sterling Morris, Cameron and Alexis Morris, Julian Smallwood III, Jason Smallwood, Cheyanne Smallwood, Allysia Lambert, and on the way, Noah Clay Bronco Earhart.

Service will be 1 p.m. today at Grace Baptist Church, Nimitz, with Pastor William R. Ballengee officiating. Burial will follow in Quesenberry cemetery, Jumping Branch.

Friends may call one hour before service today at the church.

Pallbearers will be James Stephens, Rick and David Moore, Zina Angell Arnyll Underwood, Tony Williams and William Richmond.

Albert LaVonne Clark

Albert LaVonne Clark, 58, of Beckley, formerly of New York, died at 7:20 a.m. Tuesday, April 4, 2006, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Beckley.

He was born June 30, 1947, in Indianapolis, Ind., a son of the late Arnett Clark and Pearl Maxwell Clark.

Mr. Clark worked 30 years as supervisor in Book Department of New York School of Interior Design. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and did volunteer work at the Community Action Center and worked with the senior citizens, where he received a certificate for his service.

Survivors include children, Eittene Clark and Darren Clark, both of California; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Lawrence Clark of Yonkers, N.Y.; a sister, Jeryl Clark of Mount Hope; a niece, Daisy Powell of Mount Hope; aunt, Gertie Hansbrough and husband, Morris, of Indianapolis; uncle, George Clark of Indianapolis; and a host of cousins and other relatives and friends.

Service will be 11 a.m. Monday, April 10, at Ritchie and Johnson Funeral Parlor Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. David Allen officiating. Burial will follow in Grafton National cemetery.

Friends may call one hour before service Monday at the funeral parlor.

Tracy L. Cummings Sr.

OAK HILL — Tracy L. Cummings Sr. passed away Friday, April 7, 2006, at his home on Highland Avenue following a long illness.

Mary Rose Gibson

Mary Rose Gibson, 56, of Shady Spring, passed away Thursday, April 6, 2006.

Born July 16, 2006, in Boone County, she was the daughter of the late Junior and Pauline Bailey Daniels.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Larry Gibson; and a granddaughter, Skylar Gibson.

Those left to cherish her memory include two sons, Bart Gibson and Brian Gibson, both of Shady Spring; three brothers, Roman Daniels and wife, Karen, of Beckley, Roger Daniels and wife, Ethel, of Shady Spring and Eddie Daniels of Shady Spring; and several grandchildren whom Mary will miss greatly.

Service will be 1 p.m. Sunday, April 9, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, 5251 Robert C. Byrd Drive, Beckley. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may gather with the family noon until time of service Sunday at the funeral home.

Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, is in charge of arrangements.

Georgia Belle Hall

OCEANA — Georgia Belle Hall departed this life Thursday, April 6, 2006, at the age of 57 years, 9 months and 5 days at Charleston Area Medical Center, Women’s and Children’s Hospital.

Born March 1, 1949, in Logan County, she was the daughter of Troy and Dorothy Frye Carter.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Dorothy Frye Carter.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband of 14 years, Ronald “Ron” Hall; her father, Troy Carter of Gilman Bottom; two daughters, Belinda Whitten and her husband, Derek, of Oceana and Melody Copley of Oceana; a brother, Seaburn Carter and his wife, Sabrina, of Oceana; two sisters, Paula Green and her husband, Ronald, of Man and Crystal Osborne and her husband, Johnny, of Asheboro, N.C.; three grandchildren, Tara Bobbitt, Maegan Whitten and Travis Whitten; and a host of friends.

A celebration of Georgia’s life will be 1 p.m. Sunday at Adam Toler Memorial Chapel, Oceana, with the Rev. Benny Blankenship officiating. Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Godby.

Casketbearers will be Jerry Swanson, Roger Graley, Derek Whitten, Robbie Crouch, Ed Harless, Sam Stewart, Keith Walker, Steve Blankenship and Ronnie Greene.

The family will receive friends 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Gill Andrew Hornsby

Gill Andrew Hornsby, 50, of Fireco, passed away Tuesday, April 4, 2006, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.

Mr. Hornsby was a proud veteran. He was a disabled construction worker.

He was born Nov. 21, 1955, in Beckley to Oliver Arthur and Dora Alice Hornsby.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Emogene; a son, Andrew and daughter-in-law, Tiffany, of Sophia; a sister, Marcella Tipton of Sophia; and three beloved grandchildren, Alexandria, Jon and Freya.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, James Hornsby.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 10, at Williams-Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, 147 Virginia St., Sophia.

He will be buried Tuesday, April 11, at Hot Coal cemetery, Sophia. Graveside service will be held for family and close friends. Rites will be held at 6 p.m.

Williams-Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Sophia, is in charge of arrangements.

Wanda Marie Adkins

OTSEGO — Wanda Marie (Graham) Adkins, 79, of Otsego, died Saturday, May 26, 2007, in a Beckley hospital, following a long illness.

Born Feb. 25, 1928, at Amigo, she was the daughter of the late Vester and Lura (Lilly) Graham.

Mrs. Adkins was a homemaker and was Baptist by faith. She attended the Otsego Bible Chapel, Otsego, and had been a resident of Otsego for the past 44 years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Loyd Adkins; a son, Phillip Adkins; a daughter-in-law, Teresa Adkins; two sisters, Lily Church and Joyce Halsey; and two brothers, Arnet and Clifton Graham.

Those left to cherish her memory include two daughters, Eunice Simpson and her husband, David, of Beavercreek, Ohio, and Judy Campbell of Mullens; two sisters, Bertha Bratcher and Margaret Whitt, both of Mullens; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Service will be 11 a.m. today at Tankersley Funeral Home Chapel, Mullens, with David Pollock officiating. Burial will follow in the Phillip Graham cemetery at Basin.

Grandsons and great-grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Glen Dickens

PETTRY BOTTOM — Glen Dickens of Pettry Bottom went home to be with the Lord, surrounded by his family and friends, Monday, May 28, 2007, at the Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley.

He was born March 21, 1932, a son of the late Reed and Lula Pettry Dickens.

He was also preceded in death by five brothers, Edgar, Irvin, Clarence, James and Gilbert Dickens.

He was the pastor of the Pettry Bottom Holiness Church for 45 years. He devoted his life to doing the work for the Lord. He was a veteran of the Korean War and was a member of the U.M.W.A.

He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Edna Wiley Dickens; a son, Glen Edward Dickens and wife, Carol, of Valdese, N.C.; a daughter, Evelyn Diana Dickens of Valdese, N.C.; a grandson, Timothy and wife, Tina; a great-granddaughter, Nevaeh of MacArthur; a sister, Madeline Alderman and husband, Harry, of Augusta, Ga.; a brother, Clinton Dickens and wife, Frances, of Rock Creek; half-sisters, Georgia K. Thomas of Seth, Barbara Herron of Beckley, Joyce Thompson of Dorothy, Sugar Painter of Dorothy, Wanda Beller of Colcord and Lou Collins of Ameagle; very special friends, Pat and Frankie Webber of Naoma; and all the members of the Pettry Bottom Holiness Church whom he loved very much.

Funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Pettry Bottom Holiness Church, Pettry Bottom, with Evangelist Sandra Taylor officiating. Interment will follow in the Burl-Pettry cemetery, Cooper Sub-Division, Naoma.

Visitation will be one hour before the service at the church.

Armstrong Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
