Augustus Commodore Jackson

Diamonds in the Sierra, pyramids in Egypt, a baby’s first step, the sunrise over the ocean, the smell of spring, the sunset over the mountains, the love shared between a parent and child. Our father above blesses us with rare precious gifts. During this life, these objects and moments are blessings from God that comfort us, bring us joy, and are constant reminders that he is sovereign and his love for us is even greater than these gifts. And when he determines the time has come, he removes these gifts from our lives and takes them as his own. We must remember that these gifts and this life are only temporary. This journey will end for all of us, and each of us will begin an eternal walk on golden streets with our Father, and only then will our gifts of comfort and joy be eternal.

Augustus Commodore Jackson, affectionately known as “Gus,” was born on July 25, 1952 in White Sulphur Springs, to the late Hayden Tibbs, and Daisy Jackson of White Sulphur Springs. He entered into eternal rest on April 3, 2006 in Jacksonville, N.C., after a nine-year heroic effort to battle liver disease.

He was preceded in death by his father, Elmer Samuel Jackson; and sister, Anita Biggers.

Survivors include his three daughters, Carmela “Cammie” Jackson of Miami Beach, Fla., Renata Jackson of Miami Beach, Fla., and Carmen Jackson of Jacksonville, N.C.; five sisters, Velma Jackson of Miami, Fla., Iris Woodson of White Sulphur Springs, Lillian Jackson of Miami, Fla., Gail Fitzgerald of Dale City, Va., and Beverly Wiley of Woodbridge, Va.; two brothers, Harold Jackson of White Sulphur Springs and Wayne Jackson of San Antonio, Texas; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

Gus was a valued employee of Kellwood Company in Lewisburg for 17 years, where he began as cutting unit supervisor and later promoted to shipping supervisor. In 1993, he relocated to Jacksonville, N.C., where he was the manager of the Materials Management Department at Onslow Memorial Hospital for 10 faithful years. Gus loved not only his work, but also his co-workers, and the feelings were mutual. One co-worker recently said, “Gus was always in good spirits. Every day was a good day for him.” That was the essence of Gus.

Gus was a loving and devoted father, son, and brother. He appreciated the simple things in his life, never missing the opportunity to laugh, joke, play, and find joy and happiness in even the toughest of times. He had a passion for sports which was reflected throughout his life, playing collegiate football, coaching baseball and softball, and later becoming an avid golfer. He loved and cared about others not because he had to, but simply because it was the desire of his heart. Gus was a kind man who touched the lives of the many who were graced with his presence. His smile and laughter would brighten any room. Gus was one of God’s precious gifts who will be dearly missed and forever remembered.

Service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the St. James United Methodist Church, White Sulphur Springs, with the Rev. David Jasper officiating. Burial will follow in Greenhill cemetery at White Sulphur Springs.

Visitation will be today from 6 until 9 p.m. at the funeral home in Lewisburg.
