John Elves ‘Sam’ Smith

HURRICANE — John Elves “Sam” Smith, 93, formerly of Rainelle, passed away Wednesday, May 17, 2006, in Putnam General Hospital, Hurricane, following a long illness.

Born Sept. 8, 1912, at Crag, W.Va., he was the son of the late Willie Clark Smith and Rhoda Fleshman Smith.

Mr. Smith was a former mechanic for the Purity Maid Bread Company in Rainelle.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Rainelle for 57 years, and was a past Deacon and church treasurer.

Mr. Smith was also a member of Midland Trail Lodge No. 166 AF and AM.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Mildred Hanson, and three brothers, Keith, Francis, and Willard Smith.

Survivors include his wife, Eva Shupe Smith; a son, M. Edward Smith and his wife, Nancy, of Hurricane; two grandchildren, Scott Smith and his wife, Stacey, and Lisa McClanahan and her husband, Lee, all of Hurricane, and four great-grandchildren, Skye and Sawyer Smith, and Callie and Connor McClanahan, all of Hurricane.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church of Rainelle with Pastor Dana Gatewood officiating. Entombment will follow in Wallace Memorial Mausoleum, Clintonville, with Masonic graveside rites conducted by the Midland Trail Lodge No. 166 AF and AM.

Friends may call 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. today at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Chapel, Rainelle.

The Deacons of the First Baptist Church of Rainelle will serve as pallbearers.

Gladys Louise Blackburn

FRANKFORD — Gladys Louise Blackburn, 74, of Frankford, passed away Friday, May 19, 2006.

Service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home, Lewisburg. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home, Lewisburg, is in charge of arrangements.

Johnny Dudson Bowman

ALDERSON — Johnny Dudson Bowman, 55, went home to the Lord on Friday, May 19, 2006.

Service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Alderson Baptist Church. Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. today at Longanacre Funeral Home, Fort Spring, and one hour before service Monday at the church.

Cheryl ‘Darlene’ Greene

Cheryl “Darlene” Greene was born June 9, 1955, in Beckley.

She was the 10th child born to the late Brownie Beatrice Lewis Greene and Morris Greene of Stanaford.

Darlene was raised in Stanaford. She attended New Era Baptist church for all of her early years and then in 1984 joined First Baptist Church, North Beckley, to be near her husband Ronald. She was an active member of both the church and the Sunday school. She loved working on and preparing all of the programs and bulletins for the many functions held at the church.

Darlene was united in marriage to Ronald Edward Peck Sr. in May 1973. They had happy years together and she always reminded Ronald that he was her “best friend.” To this union they had one wonderful, devoted and much beloved son, Ronald Jr. Ronald Jr. married Erica Swafford in March 1996 and from this union came Darlene’s two beloved grandchildren, Jessica and Cameron. No grandmother could love two children any more than Darlene loved these two. Anyone who knew Darlene knew the great love and pride that she had in her husband and family. Her life and conversations were always filled with the love she had for Jessica and Cameron, Ron Sr., Erica and Ron Jr. She surrounded herself and her home with their pictures and was always happy to share the many precious memories of the times that they had together.

Darlene was employed for 27-plus years by American Electric Power. She worked for many years in Beckley and then spent the later years of her career commuting to Bluefield in the position of meter reading supervisor. She made this commute rain or shine till her health forced her to stay home in August 2004.

She was preceded in death by brothers, Morris Greene Jr. and William Greene, and sisters Lois Legrand and Dorothy Tyler.

In addition to her loving husband, Ronald, son, Ron Jr. (Erica) and her grandchildren, Jessica and Cameron, she is survived by two brothers, Melvin (Hazel) Greene of Stanaford and James Greene of Beckley; and three sisters, Lillian Banks of Stanaford, Maxine Greene of New York and Mary Beasley of New York; special niece, Debra Moore; and a host of other nieces and nephews. Darlene leaves behind a host of family and close friends to cherish her memory. She was loved by many and will be sadly missed.

Service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church, 110 Ellis St., North Beckley, with the Rev. James H. Cox officiating. Burial will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call one hour before service at the church.

God saw the road was getting rough; the hills too hard to climb. He gently closed your loving eyes; and whispered peace be thine!

Ralph N. ‘Buck’ Jackson

PRINCE GEORGE, Va. — Ralph Newton “Buck” Jackson, 87, of Prince George, formerly of New Richmond, died Monday, Nov. 13, 2006, at his residence following a long illness.

Born March 21, 1919, at Caples, he was the son of the late Jesse and Maude (Murphy) Jackson.

Mr. Jackson was a born-again Christian, a 53-year resident of New Richmond prior to residing in Prince George for the past four years, a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II with Gen. Patton’s Third Army as a radio operator, and was the recipient of the American Defense Service Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with five Bronze Service Stars, Silver Star, Bronze Star and Good Conduct Medal.

He was formerly employed by the State Road Commission, Itmann Coal Co., Island Creek Coal Co., retired from Ranger Fuel Co. as a heavy equipment operator and was a member of UMWA.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Juanita M. “Sis” Jackson; an infant daughter, Rhonda Raye Jackson; a son, James Lelan Jackson; two sisters, Gladys Cook and Jessie Helen Jackson; a brother, Billy Jackson; two grandsons, Jeremy Jackson and Scott Allen Jackson; and daughter-in-law, Barbara Ann Jackson.

Those left to cherish his memory include a son, Kenneth R. Jackson of Prince George; two grandsons, Jim Buck Jackson of Huntington and Christopher Jackson of Pennsylvania; a granddaughter, Cheri Lynn Hagans and her husband, Isaac, of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and two great-grandchildren, Breanna and Isaiah Hagans, both of Myrtle Beach.

Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Tankersley Funeral Home Chapel, Mullens, with the Rev. Ronald Adkins officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call one hour before service at the funeral home.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, donations of sympathy may be made to New Richmond Chapel, P.O. Box 51, New Richmond, WV 24867.

CASS — Gene Hannah Kesler, 70, passed away Monday, Nov. 13, 2006.

Samuel Paul Mills, 79, of Riverview Lane, Beckley, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2006, in a Beckley hospital.

Meda E. Murphy

RICHWOOD — Meda E. Murphy, 92, of Richwood, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, Nov. 13, 2006, at Nicholas County Health Care Center, Richwood, after a long illness.

She was a member of First Baptist Church at Richwood. She was an avid reader, she read most of the large print in the library. Everyone loved her. She lived a simple life and was a hard worker. She was a true Christian Lady.

She worked at BF Goodrich, Fenwick, as a production worker.

Survivors include two sons, Michael Murphy of Richwood and Tom Murphy of Springdale, Ariz.; a daughter, Barbara Murphy of Richwood; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Service will be 11 p.m. Thursday at Simons-Coleman Funeral Home, Richwood, with the Revs. Tim Skaggs and Bob Dick officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Memorial Park, Richwood.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

ARBOVALE — Sylvia Orndorff, 92, died Monday, Nov. 13, 2006.

Service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Arbovale United Methodist Church. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home, Arbovale.

Forest Holland ‘Hod’ Simms

RAINELLE — Forest Holland “Hod” Simms, 80, of Simms Mountain Road, passed away early Monday morning, Nov. 13, 2006, at his home following a long illness. His wife of 56 years, Audrey, was by his side.

Born May 24, 1926, at Bellwood, he was a son of the late Stewart Thomas and Tilitha Cuma Sanford Simms.

He retired from C&O Railroad after 44 years of working with the Maintenance of the Way Department. Forest enjoyed one glorious year of retirement before being diagnosed with COPD. Forest loved working in his garden, riding his 4-wheeler, tinkering with lawn mowers and wood crafts, hunting and fishing. Some of his favorite pastimes were playing his banjo and listening to bluegrass music. He loved to sit in his swing in the front yard and talk to his neighbors. Forest was of the Baptist faith, and fought a long and courageous battle for the past 17 years.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Marvin and Leslie Simms.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Audrey M. Lynn Simms; three daughters, Sarah Dorsey and husband, Denzil, of Marion, Ohio, Victoria Spangler and husband, Thomas, of Cary, N.C., and Rebecca Luann Robinson and husband, John, of Delaplane, Va.; a sister, Geneva Meadows of Bellwood; a sister-in-law, Sue Miller Simms of Crichton; two grandsons, Stephen Dorsey of Marion, Ohio, and Jonathan Dorsey of Davis, Calif.; three granddaughters, Sonja Smith of Manassas, Va., Heather Bertrand of Delaplane and Brittany Spangler of Cary; five great-grandchildren, Brandon, Austin and Mariah Smith, all of Manassas, Zachary Raybuck of Manassas and Jayden Bertrand of Delaplane; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Wallace & Wallace Chapel, Rainelle, with the Rev. Keith Shumaker officiating, assisted by Brother Robert Nolen. Burial will follow in Wallace Memorial cemetery, Clintonville.

At the conclusion, The White Flights will be released.

Friends may share in the celebration of his life one hour before service Thursday.

OAK HILL — Robert Ferguson “Bob” Wilson of West Chester Drive, Oak Hill, formerly of Lincoln Street, Beckley, died Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2006, in an Oak Hill care center. He was 82 years of age.
