Ruth Schlager Brooks

GLEN FORK — Ruth Schlager Brooks, 79, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, May 19, 2006, at her residence following a short illness.

Born March 16, 1927, in Wise County, Va., she was the daughter of the late Fred and Evelyn Dorton Schlager.

Mrs. Brooks was a homemaker and a member of Glen Fork Church of God. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, attending church and working in her garden.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jefferson David Brooks; a son, Tom Brooks; a granddaughter, Tara Brooks; five brothers, Franklin D. Schlager, Robert Lee Schlager, Fred Schlager Jr., Billy Ray Schlager and Joseph Schlager; and two sisters, Louise Schlager and Betty Jane Bailey.

Survivors include her son, Robert David Brooks and his wife, Linda, of Glen Fork; a daughter-in-law, Karen Brooks of Glen Fork; five grandchildren, Robert Brooks of Washington, D.C., Kimberly Ellis of Morristown, Tenn., Eric Brooks of Beckley, Jason Brooks of Cool Ridge and Heather Brooks of Glen Fork; five great-grandchildren, Clay, Morgan and Faith Brooks, Jason Thomas Brooks and Noah Ellis; three sisters, Lois Mae Frazier and her husband, Harold, of Hopewell, Va., Josie Acord and her husband, Tracy, of Hopewell and Jennell Shelburne and her husband, Ozzie, of Prince George, Va.; two sisters-in-law, Eileen Schlager of Glen Fork and Janice Schlager of Peterstown; many nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

Service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Glen Fork Church of God with the Rev. Darrell Stapleton officiating. Entombment will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Matheny.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at Calfee Funeral Service, Pineville, and one hour before service Monday at the church.

The Brooks family wish to express their thanks to Hospice of Southern West Virginia.

Annice C. Dameron

JANE LEW — Annice C. Dameron, 90, of Jane Lew, formerly of Hilldale, went home to her Lord and Savior on Friday, May 19, 2006, at Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital in Weston.

She was born Sept. 20, 1915, in Mullens, and was the daughter of the late Albert Boston and Minnie Cavendish Robertson.

She was a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star. She was a Methodist by faith and played the piano at church for many years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Charles O. Dameron, in 2000; and an infant son, Thomas Jackson Dameron.

She is survived by two daughters, Nancy C. Montgomery and husband Vic, with whom she lived since 1999, and Lydia C. Goode and husband, Eddie, of Sterling, Va.; a son, Charles A. Dameron and wife, Norma, of Summersville; eight grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

A gathering of family and friends will be 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 23, at Pivont Funeral Home, Hinton.

Service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mount Pisgah United Methodist Church, Hilldale, with Rev. Sam Groves and Rev. Ken Stockwell officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Joshua Alan Davis

Joshua Alan Davis, 4 1/2-month-old infant son of Adam and Heather Shelburne Davis of Beckley, entered the glory of Heaven on Friday, May 19, 2006.

Joshua was born Dec. 29, 2005, in Morgantown.

In addition to his parents, those left to cherish his memory include his paternal grandparents, Darrell and Cynthia Davis of Ravenswood; maternal grandparents, Jerry and Pamela Shelburne of Chester, Va.; four aunts, four uncles, eight great-grandparents, and 11 cousins.

Service will be 3 p.m. Monday, May 22, at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, with Steve Stevens officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may gather with the family 1 p.m. until time of service Monday at the funeral home.

Blue Ridge Funeral Home, 5251 Robert C. Byrd Drive, Beckley, is in charge of arrangements.

Elizabeth Smith Grafton

FAYETTEVILLE — Elizabeth Smith Grafton died Friday, May 19, 2006, at her Fayetteville home at age 99.

A Fayette County native, she was an artist and a teacher. Her stained glass windows grace public buildings, churches and private homes in several states.

She is survived by her brother, Charles Smith of Huntington; her daughters, Linda Webb of Oak Hill and Margaret Honaker of Saxon, and their husbands, James Webb and Butch Honaker; her son, Ralph Grafton of Alderson and his wife, Patti; and three grandchildren, Jennifer Grafton, Megan Grafton and Thurman Honaker.

The family plans a celebration of her life at a later time. In place of flowers, friends are asked to donate to Hospice of Southern West Virginia, P.O. Box 1472, Beckley, WV 25802.

Arnold Hatfield

COAL MOUNTAIN — Arnold Hatfield departed this life Friday, May 19, 2006, at the age of 76 years, nine months and 14 days at his residence, surrounded by his loving family, following a long illness.

Born Aug. 5, 1929, at Coal Mountain, he was the son of the late Noah Hatfield and Bessie Wallace Hatfield.

Mr. Hatfield was a member of Promised Land Church of Oceana, a coal miner and a construction worker. Mr. Hatfield’s favorite pastime was fishing.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Mark Hatfield and Stanley Hatfield; a daughter, Sherry Mechell Hatfield; four brothers-in-law, Rayvone West, Jerry West, Lonnie West and Stevie West; and a sister-in-law, Florene Woodruff.

Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 55 years, Geneva West Hatfield; three sons, Gary Hatfield and his wife, Kathy, of Coal Mountain, Larry Hatfield and his wife, Frances, of Coal Mountain and Tommy Hatfield and his wife, Tammy, of Rock House; four daughters, Judy Johnson and her husband, David, of Crouches Farm, Debbie Browning and her husband, Emmett, of Sun Hill, Dian Toler and her husband, Hank, of Coal Mountain and Melissa Cline and her companion, Robert Lusk, of Beckley; a brother, Ozzie Hatfield and his wife, Joyce, of Coal Mountain; 11 grandsons, Gary Lee Hatfield, Nicky Hatfield, Josh Hatfield, Larry Lee Hatfield, Hank Aaron Toler, Gregory Arnold Morgan, Shawn Johnson, Keith Johnson, Stanley Cline, Tommy Hatfield and Cody Hatfield; nine granddaughters, Sonya Stewart, Becky Morgan, Lacosta Cline, Jessica Hatfield, Devin Hatfield, Ashley Morgan, Adreana Morgan, Contessa Cline and Samantha Lester; nine great-grandchildren, Kayle Stewart, Gabrielle Stewart, Tamara Hatfield, Austin Johnson, Dakota Johnson, Marissa Hatfield, Lathea Hatfield, Haley Paige Cline and Dalton Toler; a nephew, Wendal Hatfield of Coal Mountain; several nieces and nephews; three brothers-in-law, McArthur West of Virginia, Freddie West of Crouches Farm and Gerald Arnold West of Rock House; six sisters-in-law, Susie Laney of Hanover, Patsy Carter of Delbarton, Gracie Brunty of Brier Creek, Dixie Lusk of Brier Creek, Irene Cline of Brenton and Kathy Born es of Justice; all of his fishing buddies from Gilbert and Justice; and a host of friends.

A celebration of Arnold’s life will be 2 p.m. Monday at Adam Toler Memorial Chapel, Oceana, with the Rev. David Johnson officiating. Entombment will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Matheny.

Casketbearers will be Nicky Hatfield, Josh Hatfield, Tommy Hatfield, Larry Lee Hatfield, Gregory Morgan, Shawn Johnson, Keith Johnson, Gary Lee Hatfield, Aaron Toler, Cody Hatfield and Stanley Hatfield.

Family will receive friends 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Services entrusted to the Adam Toler Memorial Funeral Home, Oceana.

Ray Henson

BEAVER DAM, Ky. — Ray Henson, 62, of Beaver Dam, passed away Thursday, May 18, 2006, at his home following a short illness.

Born in Leslie, Mr. Henson was the son of the late Seymore and Arminthia Redden Henson.

He was of the Baptist faith, worked as a jockey driver for Perdue Farms and was a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a member of AMVETS, the American Legion and enjoyed fishing and drag racing.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Debbie Hillerich; a brother, Kermit Henson; and a sister, Ethel Huffman.

Survivors include his wife of 27 years, Carolyn Grimmett Henson; sons, Robert Ray Henson Jr. and his wife, Tyra, of Tacoma, Wash., Chris Berry and his wife, Robin, of Beaver Dam and James Sacerich of Gary, Ind.; daughters, Dawn Kimble and her husband, Scott, of August, Leslie Groves and her husband, Ryan, of Winchester, Va., and Kimberly Upchurch and her husband, Greg, of Hartford; 14 grandchildren; sisters, Opal Cavalerro and her husband, Jim, of Lodi, Ohio, Ann Helmick of Akron, Ohio, and Charlotte Spoden of Surprise, Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 23, Sunnyside cemetery, Beaver Dam.

There will be no visitation.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Hospice of Ohio County, 1211 Old Main St., Hartford, KY 42347.

Virginia Johnson

MANSFIELD, Ohio — Virginia Johnson of Mansfield, formerly of Beckley, passed away Thursday, May 18, 2006, at her home following a short illness.

Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday in Mansfield.

Dorothy Kenneda

HANOVER — Dorothy Kenneda, 85, of Hanover, passed away Saturday, May 20, 2006, at her daughter’s residence in Southmont, N.C., following a short illness.

Evans Funeral Home, Oceana, is serving the Kenneda family.

Lois S. McMillen

LEWISBURG — Lois S. McMillen, 73, of Lewisburg, formerly of Clendenin, passed away Thursday, May 18, 2006, after a long illness.

Mrs. McMillen was born in Prenter and was a 1949 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in Beckley. She graduated from the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music and was retired from Kanawha County public schools where she served as choral director at Clendenin Junior High for over 25 years. Lois played trumpet in the Charleston Light Opera Guild’s pit orchestra and served as choir director at Clendenin Advent Christian Church.

Since retiring, Lois has resided in Greenbrier County, where she was a substitute teacher at Eastern Greenbrier Junior High. As a member of Clifton Presbyterian Church in Maxwelton, she served as an elder, choir and handbell director and volunteer. She prepared food for Gwen’s Meals and played piano at local nursing homes.

Mrs. McMillen was preceded in death by her brother, Charles Sanford.

She is survived by her five children, Barbara Wygal Lutz of Lewisburg, Tom Wygal of Big Chimney, Carol Kiser of Elkview, Ruth Wygal of Centreville, Va., and Don Wygal of Fort Worth, Texas; sister-in-law, Katherine Sanford of Illinois; daughter-in-law, Patty Wygal; son-in-law, Joseph Lutz; five grandchildren; and two nieces.

The family expresses its deep gratitude to the medical and nursing staff of Charleston Area Medical Center, General Hospital, fifth-floor south, for their compassionate and professional care of Mrs. McMillen. In addition, the visits, prayers and gifts from her friends from Charleston and Lewisburg have been a comfort and blessing to her and her family.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Clifton Presbyterian Church, Route 219 North, Maxwelton, WV 24957, or to Clendenin Advent Christian Church, P.O. Box 482, Clendenin, WV 25045.

Memorial service will be held at a later date.

Linda Lou Lucas Ransom

Linda Lou Lucas Ransom of Saxon went home to be with the Lord and Savior on Friday, May 19, 2006, in a Beckley hospital following a long illness. She was 59 years of age.

Linda was born March 18, 1947, at Dameron, the daughter of the late Ace and Virginia Underwood Lucas.

A 32-year resident of Saxon, Linda spent her childhood at Dameron. She was of the Baptist faith. She loved animals and enjoyed bird-watching. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and dear sister.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Nancy Young, Betty Dickens and Mattie Cardwell; and two brothers, Andrew Lucas and Donald Underwood.

Survivors include her husband, Larry A. Ransom; two daughters, Shelia McGraw and her husband, Michael, of Beaver and Rhonda Maynor and her husband, Keith, of Stover; three grandchildren, Amber Tilley and Brittany and Carolyne Maynor; four brothers, Leon Lucas of Dameron, Lee and James Allen Lucas, both of North Carolina, and Ralph Lucas of Cleveland, Ohio; three sisters, Pearl Cantley of Rock Creek and Mary Ellen Pennington and Martha Jane Henderson, both of Fairdale; and several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Melton Mortuary Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Jerry Cantley officiating. Burial will follow in Cantley cemetery, Rock Creek.

Friends may call noon until time of service Monday at the funeral home.

Family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Arrangements by Melton Mortuary, Beckley.
