George A. Gunter Jr.

CASHIERS, N.C. — George Arnold Gunter Jr., 73, died May 17, 2007, in Cashiers.

Born Dec. 16, 1933, at Lillybrook, he was the son of the late George A. Sr. and Gertrude E. Gunter.

George served with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict as a high speed radio operator, being honorably discharged after a tour of four years service.

Retiring from C&P Telephone Co. after 33 years of service, George lived in Sugar Grove before moving to Cashiers.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Georgia N. Gilmore.

He is survived by a son, George A. Gunter III of Parkersburg; three daughters, Joy Elizabeth Held, Terry Donne Gunter and Georgia Anne Gunter, all of Parkersburg; a son-in-law, Christopher Murnaham of Parkersburg; a daughter-in-law, Cathy Gunter of Parkersburg; three grandchildren, Aurora Elizabeth Held, Kitri Sierra Held and Jeanetta Jean Gunter, all of Parkersburg; three sisters, Gail Looney and Nelda Gallaher, both of Beckley, and Betty Verduce of Grosse Ile, Mich.; and several nephews.

Memorial service will be held in Beckley at a later date.

Arrangements were by Moody Funeral Home, Sylva, N.C.

Wanda Inez Reed Haircrow

FAYETTEVILLE — Wanda Inez Reed Haircrow, 72, of Route 1, Box 298 C, died Saturday, May 26, 2007, at Bowers Hospice House, Beckley.

Born Feb. 16, 1935, at Anjean, she was a daughter of the late Ernest Reed and Mary Gravely Reed.

Mrs. Haircrow was an LPN and a member of First Baptist Church of Harlem Heights and Order of Eastern Star.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew Haircrow; a son, Micheal Haircrow; and a sister, Shirley Rose.

Survivors include a son, Mose Haircrow (Coretta) of Fayetteville; a sister, Lisa Green of Greenville, N.C.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many friends, cousins and other relatives.

Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Gethsemane Memorial Gardens, Oak Hill, with the Rev. Walter Clay officiating.

There will be no visitation.

Arrangements entrusted to Ritchie and Johnson Funeral Parlor, Beckley.

Christopher Lee Legg

HICO — Christopher Lee Legg, 23, passed away suddenly Monday, May 28, 2007, on Stringtown Road at Hico.

Michael Joseph Miklos

MOUNT HOPE — Michael Joseph Miklos, 59, of Mount Hope, died Monday, May 28, 2007, at Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley, following a long illness.

Born March 21, 1948, in Beckley, he was the son of Margaret Vargo Miklos of Mount Hope and the late Joseph Miklos.

Mr. Miklos was a retired coal miner. He enjoyed fishing and his family. He was a member of Mount Hope United Methodist Church.

Survivors besides his mother include two sons, Michael Miklos and wife, Melissa, of Hilltop and Jeffrey Miklos and wife, Brandi, of Gauley Bridge; a daughter, Kelly Miklos Vincent of Mount Hope; five grandchildren, Bryan Vincent, Ally Denise Miklos, Priscilla Miklos, Jacob Miklos and Megan Miklos; a sister, Theresa Smith and husband, Tom, of Mount Hope; and a special niece, Angela Smith of Mount Hope.

Service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Tyree Funeral Home, Mount Hope, with the Rev. Michael Kessinger officiating. Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Charles C. Parrish

FAYETTEVILLE — Charles C. Parrish, 66, of Fayetteville, passed away Tuesday, May 29, 2007, at Charleston Area Medical Center, Memorial Hospital.

Homer Ashford Phelps

RONDA — Homer Ashford Phelps, 85, died Sunday, May 27, 2007, at the Hubbard Hospice House after a long illness.

He was the son of the late Homer F. and Lottie A. Phelps and was born at Dorothy on Sept. 10, 1921. He was an elementary school teacher and principal in the Raleigh and Kanawha counties for 34 years. He also served in the Navy during World War II.

He was a member of Dawes United Methodist Church where he served as a pianist and Sunday school teacher for many years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Evelyn Hall, Eula Florentz, Beulah Green, Elizabeth Bailey and Barbara Tiger; and a brother, Arley Phelps.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Martha Link Phelps; daughters, Karen Gray and husband, Mike, of Belle and Mary Jane Willis and husband, Charles “Chuck,” of Charleston; son, Gerald “Robert” Phelps and wife, Bonnie, of Dry Branch; grandchildren, Amy Jo Sowards and husband, John, Pam Carroll and husband, Brian, and Cassie Willis; and great-grandchildren, Alyssa and Bryson Sowards.

As surviving are two sisters, Eleanor Cook and Yvonne Fraley of Ohio; and a brother, Paul Phelps of Michigan.

The family would like to thank the staff at Marmet Health Center and Hubbard Hospice House.

Service will be 10 a.m. today at Pryor Funeral Home, East Bank, with the Rev. Larry Dunnett officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends called 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

OCEANA — Nancy Lura Reed, 83, departed this life Saturday, May 26, 2007, at her son’s home in Coleman, Fla., following a long illness.

Services entrusted to Adam Toler Memorial Funeral Home, Oceana.

Joshua Cain Serreno

VINTON, Va. — Joshua Cain Serreno, 24, died Monday, May 28, 2007, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Roanoke, Va., as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident on May 27 in Vinton, Va.

Born June 21, 1982, in Charleston, he was the son of Milton Dean Serreno of Lockbridge and Jeanie Ambler Brooks of Vinton, Va.

Josh was a resident of Vinton for several years, a 2001 graduate of Staunton River High School and was employed with a roofing company in Virginia.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, George Ambler of Alderson; paternal grandparents, Albert F. and Virginia L. Serreno of Alderson; and his brother, Justin C. Brooks of Vinton, who died May 27, 2007.

Survivors include his son, Gabriel Cain Serreno of Vinton; father, Milton Dean Serreno of Lockbridge; mother, Jeanie Ambler Brooks and husband, Archie M. Brooks, of Vinton; two sisters, Amanda L. Serreno of Ronceverte and Jessica Dudley and husband, Mike, of Salem, Va.; two brothers, Nathan D. Serreno and nephew, Ethan Serreno of Vinton, and Austin M. Serreno of Ronceverte; a special friend, Lisa Poff of Vinton; maternal grandmother, Norma McFarland of Alderson; and numerous uncles, aunts and cousins.

Service will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Oakey’s Vinton Chapel, 627 Hardy Road, Vinton.

Graveside service and burial will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Gwinn cemetery, Lockbridge, with the Rev. Gary Baker officiating.

Vivian Mae ‘Tootie’ Reavish Sorrells

Vivian Mae “Tootie” Reavish Sorrells, 68, of 124 Washington Ave., Beckley, died at 6:15 a.m. Friday, May 25, 2007, at Raleigh General Hospital following an extended illness.

Born April 15, 1939, at Raleigh, she was the daughter of the late Robert Reavish and Josephine V. Carter.

Mrs. Sorrells was a dietician and a member of Welcome Baptist Church and Daughters of Isis.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leroy Sorrells Sr.; and a son, Leroy Sorrells Jr.

Survivors include a daughter, LaChonne Smith of Dayton, Ohio; a brother, Paul Carey of San Antonio, Texas; a sister, Susie Sarah Carey of Columbus, Ohio; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Service will be 2 p.m. today at Ritchie and Johnson Funeral Parlor Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. David F. Allen officiating.

Friends may call one hour before service today at the funeral parlor.

Arrangements entrusted to Ritchie and Johnson Funeral Parlor, Beckley.

Marjorie Anita Hoge

MULLENS — Marjorie Anita Hoge, 80, passed away Wednesday, May 6, 2006, at the home of her daughter, Janie Anita Forren and her husband, Butch, of Claymont, Del.

Born Sept. 21, 1925, at Pax, she was the daughter of the late Thomas C. and Mary Janie Saunders Rutherford.

Although she had resided with her daughter in Delaware for the past two years, she had been a 72-year resident of Mullens. She was a former employee of the C&P Telephone Co. where she was a telephone operator in the Mullens office.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. Hoge; and four sisters, Gladys Jared, Helen Burcham, Thelma Shifflette and Hazel Moreno.

Marjorie’s pride and joy was her only child, Janie Anita Forren and her husband, Clarence “Butch” Forren, of Claymont, Del. She has left an everlasting legacy of love and compassion in her surviving family which also includes a granddaughter, Anita Marie Holz, and a grandson, Joseph Patrick Forren. In addition, she is also survived by her 11 great-grandchildren who will always cherish her. Marjorie will be deeply missed and forever loved by all who knew her. We celebrate the day we will be reunited.

Graveside service and burial will be noon Monday at Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley, with David Pollock officiating.

Friends may call from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday at Tankersley Funeral Home, Mullens.

Pallbearers will be Joe Forren, Glenn Holz, Joey Forren, Joshua Forren, Benjamin Forren and Roger Evans.

Donations of sympathy may be made to Otsego Bible Chapel, c/o Mike Cook, P.O. Box 114, Mullens, WV 25882.

William Randall Johns

MOUNT NEBO — William Randall Johns, 79, died Friday, May 5, 2006.

Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church, Runa.

Ina Mae Phelps Painter

ALDERSON — Ina Mae Phelps Painter, 71, of Muddy Creek Mountain, Alderson, died Friday, May 5, 2006, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Fairlea, following a short illness.

Born Sept. 1, 1934, at Dorothy, she was the daughter of the late Inie S. and Cora Mae Perry Phelps.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Billy G. Painter; and two brothers, Sgt. Marion David Phelps and N. Randy Phelps.

Mrs. Painter was a retired school teacher, having taught school at Wharton, Alderson and Eastern Greenbrier Junior High School, Fairlea, retiring in 1995 from the Greenbrier County Board of Education after 38 years of service. She was a graduate of Clear Fork High School and received a Bachelor of Science in education from Morris Harvey College, Charleston, and a Master’s in education administration from Marshall University, Huntington. Mrs. Painter was a member of Mountain View Methodist Church, Muddy Creek Mountain, Alderson, a member of the Muddy Creek Mountain Ruritan Club, and was a past nominee for the Shell Teacher of the Year Award in the State of West Virginia.

Mrs. Painter will be lovingly remembered by her three children, Treasure P. Sexton and her husband, Roger, of Columbia, Md., Trenda L. Adkins and her husband, Mike, of Lewisburg and Billy M. Painter and his wife, Dawn E., of Alderson; three grandsons, Wes Adkins of Lewisburg, Matthew Sexton of Columbia, Md., and Billy P. Painter of Fort Meade, Md.; four stepgrandchildren, Lindsey Ormsbee and his wife Madison, of Ronceverte, Morgan Ormsbee of Murfreesboro, Tenn., Hanna Ormsbee of Alderson and Franklin Ormsbee of Alderson; a stepgreat-grandson, Bryson Ormsbee of Ronceverte; and several nieces and nephews.

A tribute to her life will be 11 a.m. Monday at Lobban Funeral Home Chapel, Alderson, with the Rev. Von Sadler officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Members of the Muddy Creek Mountain Ruritan Club will serve as pallbearers.
