Ina E. Simmons

SUMMERSVILLE — Ina E. Simmons, 83, died Thursday, Nov. 9, 2006, at Summersville Memorial Hospital.

Born June 6, 1923, at Pool, Nicholas County, she was a daughter of the late Grant and Mary Williams.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Arnold Burton “Bunny” Simmons, on Feb. 8, 2002; and sisters, Maxine Rogers, Grace Lester, Loreda Ayers, Gwen Cutlip and Lardell Moses.

Survivors include her son, John A. “Buggs” Simmons of Summersville; a sister, Liz Ramsey of Mount Nebo; three brothers, Lawrence Williams of Waldon, Ind., Ira Williams of Pool and Delbert Williams of Greensboro, N.C.; four grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at White Funeral Home, Summersville, with the Rev. Mark Secrist officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Flowers will be accepted or contributions may be made to the American Lung Association, P.O. Box 3980, Charleston, W.Va. 25339-3980.

Thomas ‘Tom’ Toney

OAK HILL — Thomas “Tom” Toney, 97, died Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2007.

Mr. Toney was cremated. Memorial service will be held at a later date.

Rev. Wendell Blair Wallace

The Rev. Wendell Blair Wallace, 75, of Daniels, departed this world to receive his heavenly reward on Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2006. “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course.”

He was born Dec. 28, 1930, in Brush Valley, Pa. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son-in-law, Ronnie Bolen.

Blair, as he was known to friends and family, served the Lord in Montana, West Virginia, Virginia and Pennsylvania. He retired from Pepsico in 1990. He continued to serve as a minister until just recently when his health would not longer permit. He volunteered many hours at the Beckley VA Medical Center and also served as a chaplain there. All who knew Blair acknowledged that he was truly a man of God. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.

Rev. Wallace is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Betty Levon (McCully) Wallace; his daughter, Dianne Bolen of Daniels; grandsons, Jonathan Bolen and wife, Shannon, and children, Nathanial and Lillyan, of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Eric Bolen and Lisa and children, Zachary and Michael, of Daniels. He is also survived by a sister, Evelyn Liggett and husband, Homer, of Blairsville, Pa. He was known as “Pap” not only to his grandchildren but to many young people who knew him.

Blair will be sadly missed by his family and friends but we know that he is with his Lord and rejoicing in the fact that all his earthly pains and sorrows are over.

Service will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home, Shady Spring Chapel, with the Rev. David Kopp officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call two hours before service Saturday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Jonathan and Eric Bolen, James Norvell, William Pike, Mikel Cecil and Matthew Benfield.

Robert F. Wilson Jr.

Robert Ferguson “Bob” Wilson Jr. of West Chester Drive, Oak Hill, formerly of Lincoln Street, Beckley, died Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2006, in an Oak Hill care center. He was 82 years of age.

Robert was born May 24, 1924, at Laing, at Cabin Creek, the son of the late Robert Ferguson and Maggie Lowery Wilson Sr.

A graduate of Shady Spring High School, he attended Morris Harvey College and the University of Arkansas as a U.S. Army Air Force Corps cadet. Robert was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 1945 after serving in France and the European Theatre.

After retiring from Piedmont Airlines, he was a manager for the E.M. Payne Co. and was employed by Lewis Chevrolet and Sigmund, McLean, Hunt and Payne.

A member of United Methodist Temple, Robert was also a member of Black Knight Country Club, Beckley Elks and the Tara Golf and Country Club in Bradenton, Fla.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Emma Jean Turner Wilson.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Carol Hess Wilson; a brother, George R. Wilson and his wife, Betty, of Beckley; niece, Rebecca Bartock and her husband, Eric, and great-nephew Brendan Campbell; niece, Tanis Moher and her husband, James; nephew, Richard Roach and his wife, Lou Ann; stepchildren, Lantz Hess and his wife, Cindy, Terry Sauvageot and her husband, Mike, David Hess and his wife, Trudy; and seven grandchildren.

Service will be 1 p.m. Friday at United Methodist Temple, Beckley, with the Rev. Daniel B. Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.

The family will receive friends one hour before service at the church.

Pallbearers will be family members and friends.

In lieu of flowers, Mr. Wilson requested donations of sympathy be made to United Methodist Temple for The Place, 201 Templeview Drive, Beckley, WV 25801.

Hubert Cantley Jr.

COMFORT — Hubert Cantley Jr., of Comfort, died Saturday, Dec. 24, 2005, at the CAMC Memorial Division, Charleston, after a long illness.

He was born May 31, 1921, at Rock Creek, a son of the late Hubert and Grace Lee Price Cantley Sr.

Mr. Cantley was a devoted family man, a member of Sylvester Baptist Church, a retired employee of Hobet No. 21 at Julian, W.Va., a member of the UMWA and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Paula Kay Cantley; a son, Hubert Cantley III; sisters, Doris Dickens and Thelma Briguglio; brothers, Eustace Cantley and Ronald Bee Cantley; and a son-in-law, Johnny Mitchell.

He is survived by his wife, Lucille Fields Cantley; three daughters, Debbie Mitchell of Virginia Beach, Va., Sharon Foster and husband, Ricky, of Fosterville, W.Va., and Brenda Keeney and husband, Robert, of Bloomingrose, W.Va.; a son, Kevin Cantley of Comfort; two sisters, Betty Billings of Orlando, Fla., and Barbara Asbury of Cleveland, Ohio; three brothers, Gene of Glen Daniel, Noel Dean of Perrysburg, Ohio, and David Dee of Atlantis, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Sylvester Baptist Church in Sylvester with the Rev. David Minturn officiating. Burial will follow in Cantley cemetery at Rock Creek.

Friends may call two hours before the service Wednesday at the church.

William Hugh ‘Billy’ Carson Sr.

William Hugh “Billy” Carson Sr., 78, of 507 Broadway St., Beckley, died at 4:38 a.m., Dec. 22, 2005, at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital following a long illness.

Born June 2, 1927, in Sharples, W.Va., he was the son of the late Benjamin J. Carson Sr. and Gladys Carson.

Mr. Carson was retired from Westmoreland Coal Company and a member of the UMWA and Welcome Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Oliver Carson; children, William H. Carson Jr. and Elvenice of Columbus, Ohio, Gary R. Carson and wife, Nancy, of Beckley, Bruce C. Carson and wife, Nina, of Beckley, Phillip A. Carson of Orlando, Fla., Steven A. Carson and wife, Carla, of Beckley, Anita D. Morton and husband, George, of Orlando, Fla., Mary F. Allen and husband, Kenneth, of Columbus, Ohio, Linda Y. Robinson and husband, Walter, of Garriacou, Grenada, Stephanie R. Carson of Charlotte, N.C., and Derrek R. Carson; four siblings, Benjamin J. Carson Jr. of Columbus, Ohio, Arthur J. Carson of Columbus, Ohio, Torrence S. Carson of Beckley and Mary Benson of Beckley; 29 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.

Service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Welcome Baptist Church with the Rev. David F. Allen officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call 12 noon to 1 p.m. on Thursday at the church.

Services entrusted to Ritchie and Johnson Funeral Parlor, Beckley.

Margaret Ann Carter

WASHINGTON, Ga. —Margaret Ann Carter, 64, formerly of Summerlee, passed away Friday, Dec. 23, 2005.

Born Feb. 20, 1941, at Summerlee, she was the daughter of the late Lonnie Rorrer and Kathryn Showalter and Rufus Gabe.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Kenneth Richard Churning.

Mrs. Carter was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She is survived by her husband, Austin Michael Carter; children: Kenneth Churning Jr. of Apple Valley, Calif.., Mark Churning of Washington, Ga., Steffanie (Katie) Land and Samm Blumenshine, both of Lexington, Ga., Michael Carter of Grove, Okla., Chuck Carter of Beckley, Lonnie Carter of Wagner, S.D., John Carter of Lexington, Ga., and Kassie Arroyo of Washington, Ga.; sister, Maryetta Singh of Washington State; brother, Howard Rorrer of Oshkosh, Wis.; 25 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at a later date.

Donna P. Coffman

LEWISBURG — Donna P. Coffman, 64, died at the Brier Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Fairlea, Saturday, Dec. 24, 2005, following a long and courageous journey.

She was born Nov. 5, 1941, the daughter of the late Elmer and Mae Flack Persinger.

Mrs. Coffman was an active member of the Lewisburg United Methodist Church, having served as president of the United Methodist Woman, co-chaired the annual Christmas Bazaar for two years, was an active member of Circle No. 2 and a member of the Christian Home Sunday School Class.

She held membership in the Lewisburg Lioness Club for many years, having served as president three terms as well as holding various other offices in the club. Mrs. Coffman retired following 30 years of service from the Division of Rehabilitation at their Lewisburg office. She was co-owner with her husband in the operation of Triple C Farm located near Lewisburg.

A graduate of Lewisburg High School and Greenbrier College for Women, she was employed as secretary to the president of the college for several years.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Benny and Wayne Persinger.

She is survived by her husband of 43 yeas, Jimmie H. Coffman; a son, Michael W. Coffman of Vinton, Va., and daughter, Lynn McMillion and husband, Brett, of Hinton; three grandchildren, Scott Coffman of Minneapolis, Minn., Samantha and Travis McMillion of Hinton.

Service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Lewisburg United Methodist Church with the Revs. Dr. Joseph S. Kenaston and Elizabeth Yost officiating. Burial will follow in Coffman cemetery following the service.

The family will receive friends at McCraw Funeral Home 6 to 8 p.m. today.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Lewisburg Lioness Club in memory of Donna Coffman, c/o Kay Hinkle, Treasurer, 207 Holt Lane, Lewisburg, WV.

Sanie Aliff Fletcher

Sanie Aliff Fletcher, 91, of Sophia, died Saturday, Dec. 24, 2005, at the Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley, following a long illness.

Born June 14, 1914, in Raleigh County, she was the daughter of the late Wayne Justice and Octavia E. Bolen Justice.

She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Preceding her in death were her first husband, John Earl Aliff; her second husband, the Rev. Luther Fletcher; sons, Billy and Bobby Aliff; daughters, Shelby Aliff and Mary Farley; and a grandchild, Serina Pegram.

Surviving are sons, John Aliff and wife, Wanda, of Beckley, Mickey Aliff and wife, Vicki, of McKinney, Texas, Riley Aliff and wife, Geraldine, of Sophia, with whom she made her home, and Dale Fletcher and wife, Tammy, of Elkin, N.C.; a daughter, Sharon Lockhart and husband, Darrell, of Pilot Mountain, N.C.; 14 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley with Pastor Bill Parker officiating. Burial will follow in the Odd cemetery at Odd.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Friends will serve as pallbearers.

Robert Hewitt Fry Jr.

UNION — Robert Hewitt Fry Jr., 68, passed away Saturday morning, Dec. 24, 2005, at his home following a short illness.

Born April 21, 1937, in Chattanooga, Tenn., he was a son of Elizabeth Reeves Fry of Union and the late Robert Hewitt Fry.

Mr. Fry was a retired employee of Thermo Steel, having worked as a quality control inspector, a graduate of the Norfolk Division of William and Mary College and a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Nelda Santo Fry.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his companion, Barbara “Ba” Rea; a son, Robert Hewitt Fry III of Charlottesville, Va.; two daughters, Suzanne Soucier and her husband, Richard, of Lewisburg, and Kelly Lane and her companion, Al Soter, of Virginia Beach, Va.; a brother, William Fry and his wife, Susan, of Radford, Va.; five grandchildren, Mia Hamza, Claire Soucier, Christian Lane, Cierra Lane and Shawn Norris.

A celebration of his life will be 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 30, 2005, at the Cameron Building Studio in Union with the Rev. Phil Rolleston officiating.

There will be no visitation.
