Shirley Westfall
Shirley Westfall, 60, of Sutton died July 25, 2007 while a patient in Braxton County Memorial Hospital, Gassaway. She was born March 25, 1947 in Sutton a daughter of the late Thurman P. and Virginia Ruby Dillon Cogar. Also preceding her in death were her grandparents Ira and Lovie Maude Bell Cogar who raised her.
She was a Baptist by faith and a former 911 dispatcher for the Braxton County Emergency Services for 26 years.
She is survived by two sons, Angelo “Chuck” Groves of New Cumberland, WV and John J. Groves of Burnsville; one daughter Tammey Perkins of Gassaway; 2 sisters, Macel Dailey of Martinsburg and Flossie Frame of Flatwoods; 6 grandchildren, Stacie Groves, Lydia Groves, James Michael Crist, Patrick Butler II, Robert Ross II, and Brandon Ross; niece Brenda Nettles, and nephew Ralph Marshall.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, July 28, 2007 at Greene-Robertson Funeral Home, Sutton with Pastor Randy Stout officiating. The body had been cremated.

Dottie L. Jackson
Dottie L. Jackson, 93 of Little Birch, WV died July 21, 2007 at home. She was born January 24, 1914 at Laural Run, Braxton County a daughter of the late Alva and Dorrie Johnson Snyder. She was a homemaker and a Baptist.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Dorsey, Donnie, Dwight and Delmer Snyder; sisters, Dacie Cunningham, Dollie Jackson, Dessie Harris, and Dulcie Snyder; her son-in-law Thomas Staats.
She is survived by her husband of 71 years, Amos Jackson. Son, Roger Jackson and wife Nancy of Little Birch, Daughter Paula Ann Staats of Clarksburg. Sisters, Polly Perrine of Cross Lanes, and Faye Frame of Jacksonville, FL. Grandchildren, Valerie Hurst and husband Dave; Michelle Miles and husband Scott; Christy Walls and husband Wesley all of Clarksburg; Paula Sue Staats of Mt. Claire; Jayson Staats of Morgantown, Diana Kees and husband Joe of Carey, NC; Gary Long and wife Julie of Little Birch. 4 Great grandchildren, Jessica Miles and T.R. Miles of Clarksburg, Tyler Long and Cameron Long of Little Birch.
Services were held on Tuesday, July 24, 2007 at Greene- Robertson Funeral Home with Rev. Linn Schiefer officiating. Burial followed in the Braxton County Cemetery in Sutton. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Hospice Care Rt. 1 Box 43C Burnsville, WV 26335.

Ruth Paugh Thayer
Ruth Paugh Thayer, 79, of Reisterstown, MD formerly of Newville, WV passed away Thursday July 26, 2007 in Manchester, MD after a long illness. Ruth was born on July 1, 1928 in Newville, WV the daughter of the late Ernie and Blanche Spicer Paugh. She was a retired Restaurant Manager, loving mother and grandmother.
She is preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Louise Luzader, brothers, Gale and Dale Paugh.
She is Survived by her husband, Floyd Burton “Burt” Thayer, daughter, Connie Cover of Baltimore, MD. Two grandchildren Elizabeth Ann Cover and John Michael Cover both of Florida. One sister, Jenny Self of Flatwoods, and brother, Dick Paugh of Akron, OH.
Funeral Services were held Saturday July 28, 2007 at Stockert-Gibson Funeral Home in Flatwoods, WV with the Rev. Bill Griffin officiating. Burial followed in the Newville Cemetery.

Haxel Marie Brown
Hazel Marie Brown, 85, of Cleveland, OH., formerly of Napier, WV passed away Friday July 27, 2007 in Elizabeth Skilled Nursing Center in Cleveland after a long illness.
She was born on December 8, 1921 at Napier, WV the eldest of 8 children of the late George Jennings and Mary Dolan Brown. She was a homemaker, loving mother and grandmother. She is preceded in death by one son, Bobby Brown. Brothers, Hayward, Thomas and Robert two sisters Gay M. and Regina. Hazel is survived by her children, Beatrice Ferguson, Gary and Larry Brown all of Cleveland, OH. Wanda Milhoan and Charles Blake both of Akron, OH. Sisters, Mildred Kmeyer of Ravina, OH. And Mary E. Wade of Marlinton, WV. #5 Grandchildren #10 Great-grandchildren and many step grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday July 31, 2007 at Stockert-Gibson Funeral Home in Flatwoods, WV with the Rev. Delmas Singleton officiating. Burial will be in Little Kanawha Memorial Gardens in Heaters, WV. Online condolences may be sent to www.stockertgibson.com

Oval "Grunt" Gray Gates
Oval “Grunt” Gray Gates, 77, of Sutton, WV died July 30, 2007 near his home due to an ATV accident. He was born June 29, 1930 in Louisiana a son of the late William M. and Lottie M. Hinton Gates. Also preceding him in death was one son, Ronald Gray Gates.
He was retired from the Montgomery County School System in Maryland and was a self-employed painter. He was an avid outdoorsman.
He is survived by his wife, Cora L. Gates; 4 sons, Gary L. Gates of Sharksburg, MD, Christopher A. Gates of Phoenix, AZ, Anthony Q. Gates of Mt. Airy, MD, and Jonathan Q. Gates of Sutton, WV; 2 sisters, Lalu Hinton of Farmersville, LA and Euna Ruggs of Texas ; 12 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
Funeral Services were held on Friday, August 3, 2007 at Greene-Robertson Funeral Home, Sutton with Rev. John Hudnall officiating. Burial followed in the Cox Cemetery on Polemic Run near Birch River.
Funeral arrangements are by Greene-Robertson Funeral Home, Sutton.

Bradley Daulton Jarvis
Bradley Daulton Jarvis, 55 of Frametown, died July 30, 2007 at home.
He was born July 1, 1952 in Gassaway a son of Dessie Carr Jarvis of Frametown and the late Staley Jarvis.
He was a computer analyst in the Washington , D.C. area for 26 years; he also worked for Gassaway True Value and for Kroger in Gassaway; he attended the Upper Sleith United Methodist Church.
In addition of his mother, he is also survived by sons, Eric Jarvis of Frederick, MD and Nathan Jarvis of Silver Spring, MD; sister, Linda Jarvis of Charleston.
In addition to his father, he was also preceded in death by brother, Wendell Jarvis.
Services were held Friday, August 3 at Richard M. Roach Funeral Home, Gassaway with Pastor Alvie Loyd officiating. Burial followed in the Perry H. James Memorial Park, Frametown.

Forest Byrne Friend
Forest Byrne Friend, 89 of Sutton died July 30, 2007 at the Louis A. Johnson VAMC, Clarksburg.
He was born September 23, 1917 at Frametown a son of the late Robert G. and Josephine Dickey Friend.
He was a former employee of Winchester and Woods Co. in Baltimore, MD; a TV repairman, A WWII Army Veteran and was awarded the Purple Heart; he was a Past Commander of the D.A.V. and was a Methodist.
He is survived by one son, Martin Friend of Frametown; daughter, Cheyorld Floyd of Sutton; brother, Odbert Friend of Charleston; four grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by wife, Sylvia Westfall Friend; three brothers and four sisters.
Services were held on Thursday, August 2, 2007 at Richard M. Roach Funeral Home, Gassaway with Rev. Vaughan James officiating. Burial with military graveside rites followed in the Sugar Creek Cemetery, Gassaway.

John S. Posey
John S. Posey, 96, of Gem, WV. passed away Friday August 3, 2007 at his home after a long illness.
He was born on February 8, 1911 at Gem, WV the son of the late Oscar L. and Carrie Dean Posey. John was a retired school bus driver, farmer and Methodist by faith. He was a US Navy veteran of WW II. He was preceded in death by his wife Laura J. Singleton Posey and one son John R. Posey. John is survived by daughters, Anitra Wine of Clifton, NJ., Wanda Singleton of Gem, WV and Linda Dean of Burnsville, WV. Sons, Richard G. Posey of Gem, WV and Lawrence Posey of Clifton, NJ; 12 grandchildren, 15 Great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. Funeral services were held Monday August 6, 2007 at Stockert-Gibson Funeral Home in Flatwoods, WV with the Rev. Ronzel Roberts officiating. Burial followed in the ODD Fellows IOOF Cemetery in Gem, WV. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to: Hospice Care PO Box 323, Burnsville, WV 26335. Online condolences may be sent to www.stockertgibson.com.Crystal Garvin, 29, of Diana, WV passed away Thursday, August 2, 2007 in Ruby Memorial WVU Hospital in Morgantown, WV after a short illness.She was born on December 16, 1977 in Webster Springs, WV. She was a homemaker and attended Spruce Lick United Methodist Church.Crystal is preceded in death by her father Ronald Garvin.She is survived by her mother Carol Garvin Skinner of Diana, WV. Brothers, Jimmy Damastus Jr. of Diana and Rick Garvin of Birch River. And also many nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 7, 2007 at Greene-Robertson Funeral Home in Sutton with Rev. Bill Griffin officiating. Burial will follow in the Garvin Family Cemetery in Diana, WV.

General H. Lamb
General H. Lamb, 73, of Nebo, Clay County, passed away August 4, 2007 at Laurel Nursing and Rehabilitation Center at Big Otter.Born in Calhoun County, he was a retired Timberman and was preceded in death by his mother, Ollie Hall and one daughter, Brenda Lamb.Surviving are 5 sons, Roger Lamb of Grantsville, Robert Lamb of Nicut, Keith Lamb of Hallburg, Billy Lamb of Elmira, and Joe Lamb of North Carolina; 2 daughters, Rosemary Duffield of Ovapa and Ann Lamb of Duck. A brother, Russell Hall of Charleston. Two sisters, Evelyn Sears and Naomi Metheney both of Floe. Her caregiver and granddaughter, Tracy Cottrell and her husband Jason of Nebo. Several grandchildren and great grandchildren.Graveside services will be held on Sunday at 2pm at the Green Cemetery at Nebo. Rev. Darius Arnold will officiate. Stump Funeral Home of Arnoldsburg is in charge of the arrangements.

David Clare Worley
David Clare Worley, 48, died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2007, at George Washington University Hospital in Washington , D.C., of a sudden illness.
David was born in Charleston, W.Va., on Oct. 9, 1958, the son of Oliver Lynn Worley and Rosemond Gadd Worley. The family moved to Gassaway when he was very small and he grew up in Braxton County.
He attended West Virginia University for two years and went on to develop a career as a stagehand in Washington , D.C. He was a member of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees Local 22 for 21 years. He worked for National Scenery Studios for 17 years and as a freelance union stagehand for 10.
He never married and is survived by two sisters, Lorna Worley and Tia Worley Gray, a niece and a nephew.
A memorial service was held at Grace Episcopal Church, Alexandria, Va., at 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28 with internment in the Grace Church columbarium.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in memory of David to the Divers Alert Network or to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

Loretta Lynn Riffle
Loretta Lynn Riffle, 44, of Normantown, WV passed away Sunday, September 23, 2007 in Salem, WV after a long illness.
She was born on September 13, 1963 in Gassaway the daughter of Jennings and Margie McNemar-Beam of Copen, WV. Loretta was a homemaker and a member of the Providence Baptist Church in Copen, WV. She is preceded in death by one sister, Jan Beam. She is survived by her parents, one son, Derrick Riffle of Gilmer, Co. and one daughter Melissa Dennison of Calhoun Co. and one grand-daughter Emily Faith Dennison. Brother, Danny Beam of Gilmer Co. and two sisters, Marlee Huffman and Leota Beam both of Gassaway and former husband Roy Riffle.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Wednesday September 26, 2007 at Providence Baptist Church in Copen, WV with the Rev. Brian Groves officiating. Burial will be in Copen Cemetery in Copen, WV Friends may call from noon until service time at the Church. Stockert-Gibson Funeral Home in Flatwoods is in charge of the arrangements.
