John L. Summers

John L. Summers, 79 of Winfield died March 10, 2005, at Valley Center, South Charleston.

Born June 18, 1925, in Pliny, he was the son of the late Guy Webster and Ruby Jewell DeVore Summers. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Cora Lee Summers; and his sister, Este Legue.

John was retired from Union Carbide Corporation with 36 years of service and was a member of Winfield Baptist Church. He was a member of Kanawha Valley Masonic Lodge 36 AF&AM, Buffalo, and the Scottish Rite Bodies and Beni Kedem Shrine, Charleston. He served his country during World War II as a gunner's mate on the USS Paine with the United States Navy.

Surviving are his son and his wife, John Lynn and Terri Summers of Winfield; his daughters and their husbands, Emily and Larry Stover of Winfield, Nancy and Thomas Reishman of Hurricane; his sisters, Garnett Shawkins of South Charleston and Mae Payne; his brothers, Harold and James Melvin “Pip” Summers, both of Winfield; his grandchildren, Clay and Jill Stover, John Stover, Wayne and Allison Reishman, Zan and Samuel Summers.

Services were held Saturday, March 12, at Winfield Baptist Church with the Rev. Doug McComas officiating. Burial with Masonic rites in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.

Samuel Vandevender

Samuel Vandevender, 66, of Hurricane died March 10, 2005. Barlow-Bonsall Funeral Home, Charleston, was in charge of arrangements.

Franklin Dee Johnson

Mr. Franklin Dee Johnson, 70, of Newberry, Fla., formerly of Hurricane, W.Va., passed away March 7, 2005, at Hospice of the Tri-Counties, Chiefland, Fla.

He was a farmer, a member of Mount Moriah Baptist Church, Hurricane, and a six-year resident of Florida.

Surviving are his wife of 51-1/2 years, Betty A. Johnson; sons, Franklin E. Johnson and his wife, Mary, of Hurricane, Scott Johnson and his wife, Lori, of Newberry, Fla.; grandchildren, Ashley, Alyssa, John Dee, Scott, and Gregory; sisters, Imogene, Eunita, and Priscilla; and brothers, James, Steve, and Jerry.

Services were held Saturday, March 12 at Mount Moriah Baptist Church, Hurricane with the Rev. Gerry White officiating. Burial in the church cemetery. Chapman Funeral Home, Hurricane, was in charge of arrangments. Online condolences may also be made at www.chapmanfuneralhomes.com.

Thurman Lon Johnson

Thurman Lon Johnson, 77, of Hurricane went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 9, 2005, peacefully at his residence.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, March 12, at Antioch Baptist Church with Pastor Bill Davis and Pastor Daniel Beavers officiating. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. Grandsons served as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Bob Ball, Albert Lewis, Gene Hodge, Harry Hixenbaugh, Boyd Meadows, Jim Hill, Don Barton, Jerry Templeton and Jim Morrison.

Thurman was born April 23, 1927, in West Hamlin, Lincoln County, a son of the late Albert .and Cora McCallister Johnson. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Helen Irene Johnson; daughter, Bobbie Freeman; and two brothers, Albert Jr. and Ellihue.

He was a member of the Barboursville Masonic Lodge and spent a lifetime in the wholesale and retail grocery business.

He is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, Scott and Connie of Hurricane, Steve and Faith, Marty and Frances, and Craig and Jean Ann, all of Barboursville; one daughter, Donna Evans of Beckley; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Dave and Maude Johnson of Martha and Glen and Judy Johnson of Ona; two sisters, Ruby Chapman of Salt Rock and Renee and Lawrence Vance of Hurricane; 17 grandchildren, Anissa Dunbar, Nikki Watts, Randi and J.R. Shull, Ryan Johnson, Michelle White , Cheri Call, Kelli Newsome, Adam Johnson, Evan and Lisa Johnson, Adria Johnson, Aaron Johnson, Derek Johnson, Morgan Johnson, Josh Evans, Zack Evans, Alyssa Evans and Leanne Freeman;

nine great-grandchildren, Mikyle White , Austin Morrison, Ethan Todd, Kelsie Call, Christia Watts, Jordon Watts, Bryce Watts, Shaylen Dunbar and Nicholas Dunbar; three very loving caregivers, David Nibert, Marilyn Kirby and Janie Smith; a host of nieces, nephews and family; and his friends from Granny K's “Table of Knowledge”.

Heck Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Alma O. Eads

Mrs. Alma O. Eads of Poca, formerly of Ohley, entered this world on Jan. 16, 1913. She went to be with the Lord on March 8, 2005.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Louise Vance; her husband of 64 years, Lawrence C. “Hoppy” Eads; and two sons, Jack and Darrell Eads.

She is survived by seven children and their spouses, Ruth and Ralph Mezzoni of Mount Sidney, Va., Harry and Marnell Eads of Stratford, Conn., Susan Eads, wife of Jack, of Milford, Conn., Barbara and Robert Petry of Chelyan, Maxine and Jimmie Vance of Davin, Carol Eads, wife of Darrell, of Rocky Fork, Sandra and Charles Howsare of Handley, Janet and Thomas Zerbe of Dunbar and Corrine and David Scott of Poca; 28 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and loving friend and caregiver, Dorothy Holloway.

Special thanks goes to Dr. Viradia and staff and to Kanawha Hospice Care.

Alma was a Christian. She attended Handley Church of the Nazarene and was baptized in the Lord.

Funeral services were held Friday, March 11, at Gatens-Harding Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Bernard Toppings officiating. Burial in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.

Dorris Burke

Dorris Burke, 84, of Hurricane, died at home on Tuesday, March 8, 2005.

Formerly of Brewster, Neb., she was the wife of a lifelong rancher in the Nebraska Sand Hills. She was a member of St. Timothy Lutheran Church, Charleston.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Jim Hanson of Hurricane; sisters, Vivian Alberts of Ainsworth, Neb., and Dorothy Vetter of Alliance, Neb.; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services were held 7 p.m. Thursday, March 10, at St. Timothy Lutheran Church, Charleston. Private burial in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane.

Charlene Gail Mount Cremeans Plantz

Charlene Gail Mount Cremeans Plantz, 57, of Hurricane, W.Va., passed away Thursday day, March 3, 2005, at her residence Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, March 7, 2005, at Chapman's Mortuary, Huntington, with Dallas Moore officiating.. Burial in Barker Cemetery, Cabell County, W.Va. She was born Feb. 28,1948, in Cabell County, W Va, a daughter of the late Herbert Franklin and Sylvia Ann Scarberry Mount. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Walter Alvin Cremeans; her daughter, Kristie Ellen Cremeans; and two nieces, Cheryl “Pebbles” Sanders and Vicky Ellen Wellman Adkins. Survivors include her husband, John Plantz; four sons and two daughters-in-law, Walter Alvin Cremeans and Angel, Tony Albert Cremeans and his daughter Megan Nicole, and Rusty Edward Cremeans, all of Hurricane and Sanford Dale and Toni Lynn Cremeans and their children, Shawn and Kristie Ellen Cremeans and Jessica and Rusty Czerpak, all of Huntington; a daughter Christina Lea Cremeans and her children, Christopher and Savannah “Charlie” Fields of Florida; a daughter-in-law, Ruth Plantz and her children, Andrew, Kristie and Renee; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Rose “Peachie” Mount of Ottawa Lake, Mich., Irene Deedy and Jerry Wellman of Wayne, W.Va., and Sharon “Rusty” and Dave Wilson of Hernando Beach, Fla.; a brother and sister-in-law, Herbert Frankline “Duke” Mount Jr. and Juanita Mount of Dearborn, Mich; three nieces; five nephews; five grand-nieces; and five grand-nephews. Chapman's Mortuary, Huntington, was in charge of arrangements.

Grace M. Coyner

Grace M. Coyner, 88, of Hurricane died Monday in St. Mary's Medical Center. She was a homemaker. Funeral Thursday, March 10, 2005, Chapman Funeral Home, Hurricane, burial in Hodges Cemetery, Hurricane.

John Allen Hudson

John Allen Hudson, 90 of Leon, husband of Rebecca Hudson, died Saturday, March 5, 2005 in Pleasant Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Funeral at Good Shepherd United Methodist Church, Point Pleasant; burial in Letart Evergreen Cemetery. Arrangements by Anderson Funeral Home, New Haven.

Lillian Mitchell Knapp

Lillian Mitchell Knapp, widow of former West Virginia Senator Velmer K. Knapp, passed away following a short illness on Wednesday, March 9, 2005. She was born in Hurricane, W.Va, September 11, 1915, the daughter of Roscoe Edward and Mina Oxley Mitchell. Mrs. Knapp was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of Hurricane, where she was active in the Harmony Sunday School Class and served in many capacities for more than 50 years with the American Baptist Women. Mrs. Knapp was a graduate of Hurricane High School and Marshall University. She was a former home economics teacher at Hurricane High School. Mrs. Knapp is survived by her daughter, Melissa Knapp Thorner, grandson, Ben Thorner and his wife Lindsey Gilfillen Thorner, great-granddaughter. Molly Thorner and niece, Sara Morrison Bledsoe and her daughter, Ashlee Bledsoe. She was preceded in death by her sister, Naomi Mitchell Morrison. Funeral services were held Saturday, March 12, 2005, at the First Baptist Church of Hurricane with Rev. Jerry Losh officiating. Burial in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane. Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, was in charge of arrangements.

Fred A. Radford

Fred A. Radford, 74, of Winfield, WVa., formerly of Charleston, passed away Saturday, March 5, 2005, at St. Mary's Hospital, Huntington, W.Va.

He was retired Southeastern Gas and Cabot Corp., both of Charleston. He was a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, Charleston, member IOGA, and a graduate of Marshall University and West Virginia University. Fred was a veteran. Since his retirement, he has been involved with Radford Properties in Winfield, W.Va.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alba C. and Hazel Bartels Radford.

Fred is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Carolyn Allen Richard; daughter, Holly S. Radford of Winfield, WVa.; sons and daughters-in-law, Andy and Mary Radford of Ashburn, Va., and Gregory and Summer Radford of South Charleston; brother, Phillip A. Radford of Simpsonville, S.C.; and grandchildren, Liza and Thomas Radford.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, 2005, at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, Charleston, with the Rev. Dana L. Holter officiating. Burial in Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston.

Gloria Barker Redman

Gloria Jean Barker Redman, 47, of Hurricane passed away March 7, 2005, at Putnam General Hospital.

She was a daycare provider and a 1975 graduate of St. Albans High School.

Gloria was preceded in death by her parents, Jacob and Reba Comer Barker; and her brothers, Arthur, William and Patrick Barker.

She is survived by her husband of 28 years, Thomas Redman.

Service were held Wednesday, March 9, at Casdorph & Curry Funeral Home, St. Albans. Burial in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.

Harold F. Mynes

Harold F. Mynes, Sr., 85, of Hurricane, died Saturday March 5, 2005, in St. Mary's Medical Center, after a short illness.

He was a retired Local 301 ironworker and a member of Pleasant View Church of God.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Blanch Johnson Mynes; wife of 49 years, Mae Mynes, and stepson, James “Jack” Hedrick. He was the last of ten brothers and sisters.

Surviving are sons, H. Frank Mynes of Hurricane, Jerry and Donetta Mynes of St. Albans, Donald “Roger” and Carolyn Mynes of Hurricane, Ernest and Donna Mynes of Hurricane, Jackie and Karen Mynes of Akron, Ohio; daughter, Nancy and Don Frazier of Scott Depot; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one great-great- grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 9 at Allen Funeral Home with Mr. Joe Kimble officiating. Burial in Mt. Vernon Cemetery,
