Clyde ‘Pete’ W. Parrish Sr.

On Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2005, Clyde “Pete” Woodrow Parrish Sr. died in a Beckley hospital. He had been in declining health for a number of years. He was in his 86th year.

Born Jan. 22, 1919, at Surveyor, he was the son of the late George J. and Nettie Hutchinson Parrish.

Clyde spent his childhood at Tolleytown and a graduate of Trap Hill High School. He entered the U.S. Army during World War II where he was a combat veteran. He was a retired brakeman from the railroad. Clyde was a member of Open Door Church at Shady Spring. An avid golfer, he enjoyed playing at Lake View Country Club at Cool Ridge.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Edith McGhee and Athnel Hendricks; and a brother, Clarence Parrish.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Leona Milam Parrish; a daughter, Dianna Jackson of Statesboro, Ga.; three sons, Gary Parrish and his wife, Becky, and Clyde “Pete” Parrish, all of Beckley, and Marvin “Merv” Parrish of Houston, Texas; three grandchildren, Selena Parrish of Adairsville, Ga., Paige McQuillen of Daniels and Kris Parrish of Beckley; two sisters, Naomi Hajash and Kathleen Lively, both of Beckley; a brother, Ed Parrish and his wife, Carmella, of Tampa, Fla.; nine nieces and four nephews.

Service will be 11 a.m. today at Melton Mortuary Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. George Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends called 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the mortuary.

Pallbearers will be family members and friends.

The Parrish family would like to thank all the employees of Pinecrest Hospital for their kind and loving care over the years.

Linda Louise Bryant Sebert

VICTOR — Linda Louise Bryant Sebert, 54, died Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2005.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Hickory Grove Church cemetery, Mount Nebo.

Merle H. ‘Kewpie’ Smith

Merle H. “Kewpie” Smith, 84, of Sophia, passed away Friday, Dec. 16, 2005, at Appalachian Regional Hospital after a short illness.

Born Aug. 13, 1921, at Sophia, she was the daughter of the late Elgie Howard Ballard and Edith Mae Gadd Ballard.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Woodrow “Woodie” Smith; two sisters, Frances Ballard Blackburn and Mona Ballard Hatfield; and a brother, Elbert “Cotton” Ballard.

Survivors include two sons, David B. Smith and his wife, Atholene, of Matthews, N.C., and Dwight D. Smith of Chicago, Ill., and Mark L. Bennett and his wife, Debbie, of Gastonia, N.C.; great-grandchildren, Samantha, Jerry, Joshua and Sarah; a sister, Drema Carol Ballard Sutton of Front Royal, Va., and her husband, John; two brothers, Lannie Ballard and his wife, Lorretta, of Natural Bridge, Va.; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Williams-Blue Ridge Funeral Home, 147 Virginia St., Sophia, with visitation beginning at 2 p.m.

Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.

Williams-Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Sophia, is serving the family.

Mary E. Sutton

FAYETTEVILLE — Mary E. Sutton, 58, formerly of Beckley, passed away Friday, Dec. 16, 2005, at the Sheltering Arms Nursing Home, Fayetteville.

Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, Fayetteville, is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Jane Booher

SPANISHBURG — Mary Jane Booher, 41, beloved wife of Ronald Booher of Spanishburg, was carried home in the arms of the heavenly angels to be with her Lord on Friday, Dec. 30, 2005, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Mary was born on Nov. 5, 1964, the daughter of Juanita Combs and the late Charles “Cowboy” Edward Combs.

Mary was a dedicated 20-year employee of the Medical Imaging Department of Princeton Community Hospital, where she was loved and respected by her co-workers. Mary also worked many hours for the American Cancer Society, helping raise money for the Relay For Life campaign. Mary loved gardening, working and showing her Shorthorn cattle with Ronald at local, state, and national events, winning many trophies and plaques. She was an avid worker on their farm along side of Ronald. Mary was the Sunday school secretary at Sandlick Baptist Church where she attended all her life. She was a devoted Christian and an inspiration to everyone she met.

In addition to her father, Mary was preceded in death by three sisters, Flora Mae Redmond, Rebecca Sadler and Mattie Burchett; and two brothers, Billy Combs and Carl Combs.

Mary is survived by her husband and soul mate of 16 years, Ronald of Spanishburg; her Mother, Juanita Combs of Sandlick; sisters, Nora Church of Corn Bread Ridge, Kay Berry and husband Robert, and Lena Combs, both of Colorado, Joy Hubbard and husband David of Princeton, and Carol Wagner of Green Valley; brothers, Elbert Combs and wife Sonja, Ernie Combs and Paul Combs, all of Sandlick, and Charles Combs of Bluefield; several nieces and nephews. Mary is also survived by two very precious friends, Kath Wellman of Bland, Va., with whom she worked, and Rita Roberts of Rock.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 2, 2006, from the Burns Wornal Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton with Rev. Nelson Linkous officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood cemetery in Princeton.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Friends may visit with the family today from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Doris Aileen Harris

Doris Aileen Harris, 65, of 716 F St., Beckley, passed away Dec. 28, 2005, at the Medical Center, Hackensack, NJ., following an extended illness.

Services entrusted to Ritchie and Johnson Funeral Parlor, Beckley.

Alice Opal Ellis Hoke

CREAMERY — Alice Opal Ellis Hoke, 89, of Creamery, died Friday, Dec. 30, 2005, at her home in Creamery, following a long illness.

Born Oct. 16, 1916, at Creamery, she was the daughter of the late John L. and Elizabeth Ann Spade Ellis.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Harold Hoke; a daughter, Patricia Alice Hill; a sister, Emma Kathleen Greene; four brothers, Noel Coiner Ellis, John L. Ellis, Jr., William Bryce Ellis, and George Gilmer Ellis; and a great-granddaughter, Jessica Renee Buckland.

Mrs. Hoke was a homemaker and a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church, Creamery, where she served as church treasurer for 50 years.

Survivors include two sons, David E. Hoke of Pence Springs and William Lyndon Hoke of Creamery; two daughters, Haroldine E. Ward of Talcott and Jean Ann Ballengee of Alderson; 15 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday at the Bethel United Methodist Church, Creamery, with Pastor Patty Adkins and the Rev. E. Wayne Ellis officiating. Burial will follow at the Campground cemetery, Creamery.

Friends may call today from 7 until 9 p.m. at the Lobban Funeral Home, Alderson, and one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Rev. Avener J. Hurley

GLEN FORK — Rev. Avener James Hurley, 84, of Glen Fork, died Friday, Dec. 30, 2005, in Pleasant Valley Hospital, Point Pleasant.

Born May 25, 1921, at McCarr, Ky., he was the son of the late Grayson and Ora Chaney Hurley.

Rev. Hurley was an assistant pastor at Bellemead Baptist Church, Sabine, and was also an assistant pastor at Glen Rogers Community Church. He was a member of Bellemead Baptist Church. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

In addition to his parents, Rev. Hurley was preceded in death by a son, Staff Sgt. Hassel Hurley; and also six brothers and a sister.

Rev. Hurley is survived by his loving wife, Elsie Hurley; two daughters, Linda Clawson of Greer, S.C., and Nancy Darlene Swim of Beckley; two sons, Ronald Hurley of Glen Fork and Edward Hurley of Statesville, N.C.; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Bellemead Baptist Church, Sabine, with the Revs. Nathan Vance and Harry Lafferty officiating. Burial will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Friends may call from 6 until 8 p.m. today at Calfee Funeral Service, Pineville.

Memorial contributions may be made in Rev. Hurley’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Floor 17, Chicago, IL 60601-7633.

Calfee Funeral Service of Pineville is serving the Hurley family.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Brandon Michael Mangus, of Columbus, Ohio, formerly of Beckley, died Saturday, Dec. 31, 2005, at his home in Columbus, Ohio, following a short illness. He was 30 years of age.

FAYETTEVILLE — Melissa Cara Settle, 40, of Fayetteville, Rt. 2, died Saturday, Dec. 31, 2005.

Ruby Shrewsbury

LASHMEET — Ruby Lue Hodge Shrewsbury, 77, of Reese Harmon Ridge, Lashmeet, died Thursday, Dec. 29, 2005, at her home.

Born April 25, 1928, at Piedmont, she was the daughter of the late Himble Hodge and Hallie Buchanan Hodge.

Mrs. Shrewsbury was retired from the Maidenform in Princeton. She was a member of the Matoaka-Shawnee Baptist Church. Ruby was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She enjoyed attending ballgames and school events to see and support her grandchildren. In later years, she doted on her great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Virginia Elliott; one nephew, Douglas Elliott; and a son-in-law, Robert Keatley.

Survivors include her husband of 60 years, James Clyde Shrewsbury; three daughters, Connie Keatley of Hixon, Tenn., Sandra Bailey and her husband Jerry of Daniels, and Wanda Mitchem and her husband Russ of Lashmeet; one son, James David Shrewsbury and his wife Charlotte of Dublin, Va.; four grandsons, Lance Keatley and his wife Lisa of Hixon, Tenn., Todd Shrewsbury and his wife Amy of Radford, Va., Jason Bailey and his wife Sharon of Beaver, and Derek Mitchem of Lashmeet; four granddaughters, Lisa S. Tucker and husband Tom of Radford, Va., Amy M. Keatley of Fort Oglethorpe, Ga., Heather B. Brown and her husband Alex of Dixon, Mo., and Kelli M. Horner and her husband Mike of Flint, Mich.; six great-grandchildren, Charlie, Amber, Hallie, Bradley, A.J., and Sarah; and her faithful companion and caregiver, Pansy Basham.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton, with the Revs. Rick Setser and Ron Richards officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton.

Grandsons and grandsons-in-law will serve as pallbearers.

Friends may call today from 6 until 8 p.m. at the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton.

Lilly Louise Ervin Deckman

GRENADA, Miss. — Lilly Louise Ervin Deckman, 58, of Grenada, Miss., formerly of Renick, passed away Thursday, Dec. 29, 2005.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Williamsburg. Friends may call one hour prior to the services at the church on Wednesday.
