ARLINGTON, Texas — James Edward Blake, 78, a native of Glen Jean and a Navy veteran, died Monday, Jan. 30, 2006. Surviving are sisters, June and Shirley.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Moore Memorial Gardens. Friends may call 8:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday.

Edith Frances Vegh Bowling

OAK HILL — Edith Frances Vegh Bowling, 79, of Pea Ridge Road, passed away Sunday, Jan. 29, 2006, at Plateau Medical Center following a sudden illness.

Born Aug. 16, 1926, at Minden, she was the daughter of the late Andy Vegh Sr. and Fannie Grandetti Vegh.

She was a devoted wife, mother and sister and a member of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Edith loved to cook, play cards and spend time with her family. She devoted her life to caring for others and will always be remembered for the unconditional love she gave to everyone who knew her.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Bowling; two brothers, Johnny Vegh and Andy Bodnar; and two sisters, Elizabeth Crone and Margaret Vegh.

Survivors include her daughter, Margaret Ann O’Neal and her husband, Greg, of Oak Hill, who made their home next door to Edith; a grandson, Travis O’Neal of Morgantown, and her grand-dog number one; two sisters, Helen Saplak of Stuarts Draft, Va., and Lillian Phillips and her husband, Carl, of Oak Hill; a brother, Andy Vegh Jr. and his wife, Ruth, of Ravenswood. She had many nieces and nephews who loved her, including “pajama party buddie” Edie Davis.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. today at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Oak Hill, with the Rev. Charles B. Teufel and Pastor Delmas Wolfe officiating. Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

The family received friends 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, where a Rosary and Christian Wake Service was held at 8:30 p.m.

Pallbearers will be Jeff O’Neal, Everette Harris, Johnny Davis, Mark Allen, Steven Grandetti and Paul Saplak.

Virgil O. Burkett

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. — Virgil Otis Burkett of Punta Gorda, formerly of Kopperston, died Monday, Jan. 30, 2006, in a Port Charlotte, Fla., hospital. He was in his 92nd year.

Born Aug. 9, 1913, in Van Lear, Ky., he was the son of the late Samuel and Nora Woods Burkett.

A longtime resident of Kopperston, Mr. Burkett worked at the Kopperston Mines, retiring as a dispatcher. He had 36 years of service with the mining industry. Virgil played baseball for the Kopperston Black Diamond League. He was a member of Toneda Baptist Church. A resident of Florida the past five years, Mr. Burkett kept up with current events; he enjoyed reading the newspaper and watching television, especially sports.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Rubye Burkett, the mother of his children.

He was the beloved father of Connie Miller and her husband, Harold, of Punta Gorda, Jack Burkett and his wife, Toni, of Brandon, Fla., and Denny Burkett and his wife, Pat, of Cape Coral, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; sisters, Minerva Rucker of Circleville, Ohio, and Josephine Daniel of Corbin, Ky.; and a brother, Clarence Burkett of Hillsboro, Ohio.

Committal service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum, Beckley, with the Rev. Donald Adkins officiating.

Friends may call 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at Melton Mortuary, Beckley. Those wishing to attend the committal service are asked to be at the mortuary by 10:30 a.m. Friday.

The family requests that donations of sympathy be made to the Sago Mine Fund, P.O. Box 1510, New York, NY 10150, with reference No. 887384 on check memo.

Bennetta Bracken Carter

FAIRFAX, Va. — Bennetta Bracken Carter, 94, formerly of Oak Hill, died Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2006, at Mount Vernon Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Alexandria, Va.

Born March 31, 1911, in Meigs County, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Charles Steele Bracken Sr. and Anna High Bracken.

Mrs. Carter was retired from Greyhound Lines Inc.

Mrs. Carter was a former member of Ruffner Memorial Presbyterian Church, Charleston. She attended both the United Methodist Church and the First Presbyterian Church in Oak Hill and was a member of the William Morris Chapter N.S.D.A.R.

Her husband, Leonard F. Carter; two brothers, John and Charles Bracken; and a sister, Marg Bell, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a daughter, Tomeia Rawson of Fairfax; a stepson, Leonard “Pete” Carter Jr. and wife, Joann, of Russell, Ky.; two granddaughters, Laurelyn Rawson and Jennifer Robinette and husband, John; and a great-grandson, Hayden Robinette.

Visitation will be 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill.

Service will be 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with the Rev. William Slates officiating. Burial will be in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

FAYETTEVILLE — John Coombs, 25, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2006, at home following a long illness.

Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, Fayetteville, will be in charge of arrangements.

Judith Ann Creed

RAINELLE — Judith Ann Creed, 68, died Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2006, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Fairlea, following a short illness.

Margie A. Dalton

Margie A. Richardson Dalton, 84, of Beaver, died Monday, Jan. 30, 2006, at her home following a long illness.

Born May 28, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Alex Loar and Clara Keaton Loar Murdock and stepfather, George Murdock.

Mrs. Dalton was a faithful member of the United Methodist Church in Blue Jay and a proud member of the church’s prayer chain.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Donald Richardson; her second husband, William Dalton; and brothers, Charles H. Loar, James P. Loar, George A. Murdock and Quincy “Billy” Murdock.

Survivors include a son, Gary W. Richardson and wife, Darlene, of Pennsville, N.J.; stepdaughter, Rosemary Cummings and husband, John, of Rural Retreat, Va.; grandchildren, Kelly Richardson of New Jersey and Vicki Walton and husband, Mike, of Maryland; great-grandchildren, Joshua Richardson of New Jersey, Tiffany Headley of New Jersey and Delaney and Darby Walton of Maryland; sisters, Mildred Ransom and husband, Frank, of Daniels and Mary E. Meador of Blue Jay; and a brother, Joseph Murdock and wife, Bertha, of Fayetteville.

Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with Pastor Betty Lusk officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Dennis Prasch, Marvin Murdock, Mike Meador, Frank Ransom, Frank Ransom Jr. and Joshua Richardson.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Southern West Virginia, P.O. Box 1472, Beckley, WV 25802.

Hazel Elizabeth McGraw Frock

WINCHESTER, Va. — Hazel Elizabeth McGraw Frock, 68, formerly of Farley Hill, passed away Monday, Jan. 30, 2006.

Born Jan. 21, 1938, at Farley Hill, she was the daughter of the late Wesley Jasper McGraw and the late Goldie Myrtle Basham McGraw.

Hazel enjoyed being with her family. She was of the Baptist faith and was a 1955 graduate of Stoco High School.

In addition to her parents, Hazel was preceded in death by her son, Kevin Frock; granddaughter, Carrie Frock; and a brother, Benny McGraw.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Harry Frock; a son, John Frock of Woodbridge, Va.; a daughter, Peggy M. Montoney of Winchester; a brother, Delane McGraw of Oak Hill; two sisters, Deloris Cobbins of Fairfax, Va., and Carol Houck of Sophia; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Farley Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Darrell McNeely officiating. Burial will follow in Farley Hill cemetery.

Frank Frock, Robert Cobbins, Greg McGraw, J.B. Houck, Kenneth Frock and Luke Houck will be serving as pallbearers.

Friends may gather with the family 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at Williams-Blue Ridge Funeral Home, 147 Virginia St., Sophia.

Willard Johnson

Willard Johnson, 77, of Piney View, died Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2006, at Raleigh General Hospital.

Robin Moore

Robin Moore, born March 4, 1955, in Clay County, completed his work here and went home to be with the Lord on Jan. 28, 2006, at the age of 50.

Robin was of the Christian faith, loved the outdoors and spent most of his work years outside as a professional fishing guide and owner of Castaway Fishing Co. He was a veteran whitewater raft guide with more than 20 years providing memorable days on the New and Gauley Rivers for thousands of guests of Class VI River Runners.

He was a nationally certified swiftwater rescue instructor and taught rescue clinics for the Navy SEAL teams, Air Force ParaRescue, U.S. Coast Guard and other military Special Forces. In addition, he did rescue training for the West Virginia DNR officers, various fire department personnel and hundreds of river guides throughout West Virginia.

One of his career highlights was being a member of a 12-person expedition team to the Colca River Canyon in Peru, a trip sponsored by the National Geographic Magazine (January 1993 issue) under the leadership of adventurer/explorer Piotr Chmielinski.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife, Terry Moore of Oak Hill; a daughter, Cathi Jo Moore of Ansted; a granddaughter, Cayla Dixon of Ansted; mom and dad, Bill and Norma King of Lashmeet; brother, Dennie Moore of Bowling Green, Ky.; sister, Dora Metheny and husband, Jerry, of Kegley; father and stepmother, Denver and Peggy Moore of Oak Hill; brother, Steve Moore of Virginia; sisters, Diane Mayo of Huntington and Lori Moore of Fayetteville; several nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind more friends than most people have in a long lifetime.

Service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, 5251 Robert C. Byrd Drive, Beckley, with Pastor Cecil Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may gather with the family 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations of sympathy be made to the Robin Moore Memorial Fund, c/o Fayette County National Bank, P.O. Box 209, Fayetteville, WV 25840-0209.

Eva Cordell Ritchie

Eva Cordell Ritchie began her run on Oct. 12, 1926, and ended her race with a “shout” down the streets of gold on Glory Avenue on Monday, Jan. 30, 2006, following an extended illness.

Spectators cheering her on Glory Avenue are the “love of her life,” William O. Ritchie Sr.; her mother and father, Samuel and Geneva Williams; her sister, Shirley Williams; and her brother, Reginald Williams.

Supporters still at the starting gate and still in the run are her children, two sons, William Ritchie Jr. (Alfreda) of Clinton, Md., and Douglas Ritchie (Charlotte) of Fort Washington, Md.; a daughter, Terri Brown (Jerrold) of Decatur, Ga.; two stepdaughters, Brendolyn Jasper (Robert) of Southfield, Mich., and Gwendolyn Ray (Charles) of Dayton, Ohio; two sisters, Gwendolyn Payne (Hezekiah) of Baltimore, Md., and Juanita Parham (Rayfus) of Roanoke, Va.; and a brother, Samuel Williams (Peggy) of Baltimore.

Eva was educated in the public schools of Fayette County, graduating from DuBois High School, and later attended Beckley College. After graduation, Eva joined William O. Ritchie in holy matrimony on Jan. 9, 1949, in Derry Hale. Eva accepted the Lord as her Savior at an early age. She was an active member in her church, St. Matthew A.M.E. Church in Beckley. She served faithfully in numerous capacities as the scholarship chairperson for the Keys Miller Scholarship for West Virginia, Women’s Missionary Society, a steward and stewardess, member of the Senior Choir, Usher Board and Missionary Society and published of the church bulletin.

Eva retired in 1988 after 25 years of service from the West Virginia Department of Welfare.

Her Masonic affiliations included membership in the Beckley Assembly 305 Order of the Eastern Star, Golden Circle and the Daughter of Isis. She was one of the founding members of the Friendly Few Savings Club.

Family meant a great deal to Eva. Thus, supporters still at the starting gate and in the race to cherish her memory include her sisters-in-law, Goldie Diamond of Cleveland, Ohio, Evelyn Bibb of Forestville, Md., and Trula Ritchie of Detroit, Mich.; brothers-in-law, Joseph Ritchie (Dorothy) of Garten, Thomas Ritchie (Yasuko) of Vacazille, Calif., Samuel Vatelle Ritchie of Washington, D.C., and Harold Lonelle Ritchie of Falls Church, Va.; her granddaughters, Arian Ritchie Joiner (Kris) of Grand Prairie, Texas, and Casey Brown of Decatur, Ga.; a grandson, Kenneth Ritchie of Fort Washington, Md.; three great-grandchildren, Delonte, Devin, and Destiny Joiner; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Matthew A.M.E. Church, 103 Mills Ave., Beckley, with the Rev. Abner Wright officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, and the family will receive friends noon to 1 p.m. at the church.

Roy Melvin Saylor Jr.

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — Roy Melvin Saylor Jr., 39, passed away Monday, Jan. 30, 2006, in INOVA Fairfax Hospital after a lengthy illness.

Mr. Saylor was a 1985 graduate of Woodbridge High School and was employed by Century Tile, in Alexandria, Va., as a ceramic tile setter. He was known by everyone as a fighter, loved life and was a “rock” to everyone.

He was the son of the late Roy Melvin Saylor Sr. and is survived by his loving wife, Cindy Saylor; his devoted daughters, Nikki and Sierra Saylor; his mother, Vada G. Saylor of Caldwell; his brother, Jerry W. Saylor of Caldwell; his two sisters-in-law, Amber Legge of Manassas, Va., and Crystal Mozingo of Fredericksburg; his aunt, Paula Hall, and his uncles, Raynard and Henry Saylor of West Virginia, Tony Saylor of Iowa and Bobby Shope of West Virginia; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his aunt, Carolyn Vance.

Service will be noon today at Laurel Hill Funeral Home, Spotsylvania, Va. Burial will be Saturday at Highland Park Church cemetery, Second Creek, following a service at Longanacre Funeral Home, Fairlea, at 12 noon. The family received friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Laurel Hill Funeral Home.
