OAK GROVE, Va. — Steven B. Amick, 53, formerly of Nimitz, died Thursday, Feb. 2, 2006, at his home.

Waldo Emerson Brown

CYCLONE — Waldo Emerson Brown, 70, died Thursday, Feb. 2, 2006.

Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Krantz-McNeely Funeral Home Chapel, Man. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today and one hour before service Sunday at the funeral home.

Albert Bray Cary

PEABODY, Mass. — Albert Bray Cary, 83, formerly of Hinton and a native of Ronceverte, died Saturday, Jan. 28, 2006.

There will be a private family memorial service at a later date.

T.J. Anderson & Son Funeral Home, Ayer, Mass., is in charge of arrangements.

Johnny A. Chizmar

Johnny A. Chizmar, 83, of Beckley, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2006.

Born April 10, 1922, he was the son of the late John Chizmar and the late Bertha Horvath Chizmar.

Johnny was a Golden Glove boxer in the 1940s and played baseball.

He was a member and served as an elder deacon of Open Bible Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, two sisters, Ethel Nassif and Elsie Chizmar; and two brothers, Tommy Chizmar and Louie Chizmar, preceded Johnny in death.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife, Shirley Meade Chizmar; a son, Johnny Chizmar Jr. of Beckley; a daughter, Cathy Griffith and husband, Terrence, of Beckley; a granddaughter, Danielle O’Donnell; two grandsons, Kevin O’Donnell and Preston Griffith of Beckley; two brothers, Ernest Chizmar and wife, Dorothy, of Bluefield and Danny Chizmar and wife, Nora, of Panama City, Fla.; and two sisters, Elizabeth Cole and husband, Dennis, of Bluefield, Va., and Barbara Jones and husband, Joel, of Spring Lake, N.C.

Service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Open Bible Baptist Church, Hedrick Street, Beckley, with Pastors Rodney Allen, Ken Pritt and Gene England officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Family and friends will be serving as pallbearers.

Friends may gather with the family 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the church.

Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley, is in charge of arrangements.

Ruth Terry Claytor

Ruth Terry Claytor, 88, of 405 Stanaford Road, Beckley, died at 8:12 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2006, at BARH following a long illness.

Born Dec. 19, 1918, at Kaymore, she was the daughter of the late Nate Coles and Arie Bolden.

Mrs. Claytor was a homemaker and a member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church at Lanark.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Acie Claytor; a daughter, Stella Jones; and sisters, Bernice Scruggs, Rosa Lee Roebuck and Pauline Newsom.

Survivors include a stepson, James Claytor of Newark, N.J.; stepdaughter, Rosa Claytor of Newark; two granddaughters, Renee Chisolm of Charleston and Sandra Lee Johnson of Pittsburgh, Pa.; five great-grandchildren, Lisa Reed, Lena and Zoe Shavers, Amber Johnson and Devan Johnson; great-great-grandchildren, Renata Foust, Christian, Chelsa and Sage Shavers, and Malcolm Fletcher; brothers and sisters, Jerry Peck and wife, Quantina, of North Beckley, Aurelius Willie Peck and wife, Jean, of Stanaford Acres, Clarence Peck of Lanark, Lonell Robinson of Beckley and Rosetta Peck of North Beckley; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Mount Vernon Baptist Church, Lanark, with the Rev. Donald Cook and the Rev. James H. Cox officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Park, Beckley.

Friends may call one hour before service Sunday at the church.

Services entrusted to Ritchie and Johnson Funeral Parlor, Beckley.

Judith Ann Creed

RAINELLE — Judith Ann Creed, 67, died Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2006, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center at Fairlea following a short illness.

Born Dec. 3, 1938, at Caretta, she was the daughter of the late Shade M. and Selma E. Folden Creed.

She was a homemaker and a member of Peoples Baptist Church of Frederick, Md.

She is survived by three brothers, Howard Creed and wife, Phyllis, of Hinton, Hubert Creed and wife, Rose, of DeLand, Fla., and Dennis Creed of West Virginia; three sisters, Nancy Creed of Baltimore, Md., Peggy Knight and husband, Harold, of Deer Park, Texas, and Deborah Frazier and husband, Herb, of Columbus, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 11 a.m. today at Ronald Meadows Funeral Parlors Chapel, Hinton, with Hubert Creed officiating. Burial will follow in Restwood Memorial Gardens, Hinton.

Friends may call after 10 a.m. today at the funeral parlor.

Hazel Elizabeth McGraw Frock

WINCHESTER, Va. — Hazel Elizabeth McGraw Frock, 68, formerly of Farley Hill, passed away Monday, Jan. 30, 2006.

Born Jan. 21, 1938, at Farley Hill, she was the daughter of the late Wesley Jasper McGraw and the late Goldie Myrtle Basham McGraw.

Hazel enjoyed being with her family. She was of the Baptist faith and was a 1955 graduate of Stoco High School.

In addition to her parents, Hazel was preceded in death by her son, Kevin Frock; granddaughter, Carrie Frock; and a brother, Benny McGraw.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Harry Frock; two sons, Frank Frock of Woodbridge, Va., and John Frock of Woodbridge; a daughter, Peggy M. Montoney of Winchester; a brother, Delane McGraw of Oak Hill; two sisters, Deloris Cobbins of Fairfax, Va., and Carol Houck of Sophia; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Service will be 2 p.m. today at Farley Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Darrell McNeely officiating. Burial will follow in Farley Hill cemetery.

Frank Frock, Robert Cobbins, Greg McGraw, J.B. Houck, Kenneth Frock and Luke Houck will be serving as pallbearers.

Friends gathered with the family 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at Williams-Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Sophia.

Williams-Blue Ridge Funeral Home, 147 Virginia St., Sophia, is in charge of arrangements.

John Willis Godbey

ST. ALBANS — John Willis Godbey, 88, of St. Albans, died Thursday, Feb. 2, 2006, at his home.

He was born Aug. 24, 1917, to John E. and Ollie McCutcheon Godbey in Harper. His wife of 67 years, Grace, preceded him in death, as well as his daughter, Jeannie Ahmann; sons, Johnnie and Jackie; brother, Willard; and sister, Leona Holliday.

He retired from Union Carbide Corp. with 35 years of service. He was one of the original founders and a longtime member of Grace Baptist Temple. John put God and family first in his life and leaves behind a loving group of family and friends. He enjoyed his Tuesday morning bowling league and playing dominos with anyone who would challenge him.

He is survived by his daughter, Nora Lester and husband, Bob, and son, Alfred and his wife, Libby, all of St. Albans; brothers, Owen Godbey of Memphis, Tenn., and Thomas Godbey of Melbourne, Fla.; sister, Nellie Phillips of Springfield, N.J.; 14 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at Bartlett Chapman Funeral Home, St. Albans. Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with burial at Teays Hill cemetery, St. Albans.

Bartlett-Chapman Funeral Home, 409 Sixth Ave., St. Albans, is in charge of arrangements.

Willard M. Johnson

Willard M. Johnson, 77, of Piney View, died Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2006, at home following a sudden illness.

Born March 8, 1928, at Stanaford, he was a son of the late Jesse Johnson and Bessie Wardensky Johnson.

Mr. Johnson was retired from C&P Telephone Co. as a telephone technician. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers and past president of Communications Workers of America. He was a member of Stanaford Missionary Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Johnson.

Survivors include daughter, Susan Ball and husband, Ken, of St. Clairsville, Ohio; brothers, Walter Johnson of Rochester, N.Y., and James Johnson of Barberton, Ohio; sisters, Nellie Johnson of Beckley and Wanda Simpkins of Cranberry; grandchildren, Stephanie and Scott Ball; great-grandchildren, Katelynne and McKenzie Ball; and several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 1 p.m. Sunday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with the Revs. George Wood and Philip Lilly officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Larry Cantley, John Farrish, John Lewis, Johnny McGhee, Sam Suttle, Darrell Todd and Dave Tolliver.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Stanaford Missionary Baptist Church, Box 294, Stanaford, WV 25927.

Virginia V. Hughes Kennedy

Virginia Vertie Hughes Kennedy, 87, of Pinecrest nursing home, formerly of Crab Orchard and Portland, Ore., departed this life on Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2006, after a long illness.

Virginia “Vertie” was the fourth child born to the late Robert Thomas and Louisa Massey Hughes on the 5th day of September, 1918, at Affinity.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Kennedy, on Nov. 14, 2002; a sister, Minnie Lilly; and four brothers, Homer, Gilmer, Ted and Lamer Hughes.

She worked as a secretary in the Beckley area before moving to Portland and working as a secretary in various areas such as banking and real estate. She and her husband retired back to West Virginia in 1988 to the Crab Orchard area.

She is survived by a son, Kenn Kennedy and wife, Betty, of Coos Bay, Ore.; a daughter, Sue Loe and husband, Rueben, of Milwaukie, Ore.; two sisters, Brookie Angle of Midway and Ethel Cole of Fayetteville, Ga.; a sister-in-law, Naoma Hughes of MacArthur; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Kenn Kennedy Jr. and wife, Brenda, and their daughters, Mackenzie, Megan and Madison, of Anchorage, Alaska; Connie Antonson and husband, Mark, and their children, Tanner, Courtney, Trevor and Lindsey, of Wilsonville, Ore.; Chrissy Moore and husband, Tim, and their daughter, Katlin, of Camby, Ore., Shawn Loe and wife, Christy, and Christopher Loe and wife, Kim, of Portland, Ore.; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Service will be 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Allan Copenhaver officiating. Entombment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Beckley.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be nephews.

Freda Lambert

On Feb. 2, 2006, the trumpet of the Lord rang out, as the Angel choir began to sing, Freda Lambert, 83, of Mullens, was gently lifted into heaven on the wings of Angels, waiting just inside the Pearly Gates with open arms to welcome her home was her devoted husband of 57 years, Vernon Lambert. Also joining in the celebration were her parents, Mack and Mayme Jenks; two brothers, Charles N. Jenks and Van D. Jenks; a sister, Garnet Strong, and two Cherubims, Don Ramsey Jr. and Joshua Kyer, as the celebration continues, she walks hand in hand with Vernon through the streets of gold beside the crystal sea and watch over their loved ones left behind to cherish their memory.

Remaining here are their five children, Sandra Kyer Cosner and husband, Leon, of Harrisonburg, Va., Vernon L. “Cokey” Lambert II and wife, Susan, of Newnan, Ga., Belinda Barker and husband, Mark, of Ozark, Ala., George D. Lambert and wife, Donna, of Mullens and J. Alan Lambert and wife, Judy, of Mullens.

Freda also leaves behind 16 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, her beloved sister and best friend, Sara Lou Frank, and a host of nieces and nephews left to cherish her memory.

The daughter of the late Mack D. and Mayme L. Jenks, Freda was born Dec. 17, 1922, at Big Sandy in McDowell County. She was married to the love of her life, Vernon Lambert, on Jan. 2, 1942. She devoted her life to her husband, children and grandchildren. She was always there with a smile, a hug or a helping hand. She loved singing in the choir and attended Amigo Baptist Church. She also loved sitting in her swing listening to the birds sing as she enjoyed the beauty and fragrance of her beautiful flowers while waiting for the next child, grandchild or friend to show up for a visit.

Her family invites everyone who knew her to join them in the memory celebration of her life.

Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at First Church of God, Guyandotte Avenue, Mullens, with Alan Lambert officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at Tankersley Funeral Home, Mullens, and one hour before service Sunday at the church.

Pallbearers will be her seven grandsons, Jack Kyer, Jeff Kyer, Jerry Kyer, Jim Kyer, Adam Barker, Jeff Lambert and Joshua Barker.

Honorary pallbearers are Brent Mattox, Charlie Barker, Eric Sears, Chris Quesenberry, Don Ramsey, Nick Biggs and Tim Frank.
