Wetzel West

LYNCO — Wetzel West, 81, passed away Friday, Feb. 3, 2006, at the VA Medical Center in Beckley following a long illness.

Born Jan. 24, 1925, in Wyoming County, he was the son of the late Herbert Luther West and Tressie Browning West.

Mr. West fought in the U.S. Navy during World War II where he served in the South Pacific. He enjoyed gardening, ginsenging, fishing and being outdoors.

In addition to his parents, his wife, Betty Blankenship West, preceded him in death in 1991.

Survivors include his longtime companion, Helen Maynor of Lynco; three sons, Carl West and his wife, Diane, of Troutman, N.C., Larry West and his wife, Mary, of El Cajon, Calif., and Michael West and his companion, Richard, of Statesville, N.C.; five daughters, Bonita Eisele and her husband, Alan, Sheila Poole and her husband, Jerry, Lynn Smyth and her husband, Carl, and Elaine Anthony and her husband, John, all of Statesville, and Sandra Daniels and her companion, Johnny Sigmon, of Claremont, N.C.; a brother, Jerry West of High Point, N.C.; three sisters, Jewel Poole of Trinity, N.C., Helen Brown of Thomasville, N.C., and Joann West of Forsyth County, N.C.; a special friend, Dan Cline of Clear Fork; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Service will be 1 p.m. Sunday at Evans Memorial Chapel, Oceana, with the Rev. David Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny.

Friend may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Friends and family will serve as pallbearers.

The Wyoming County Honor Guard will conduct military graveside rites.

Wilda Mae Gunter Boggess

Wilda Mae Gunter Boggess, of Lanark, passed into God’s hands at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 21, 2006. Mom was called to heaven by her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and answered him obediently.

Born Oct. 3 in Newport, Tenn., she was the daughter of the late John Gunter and Mary Gunter, both residing in Heaven.

Mrs. Boggess was a homemaker and liked to fish, camp, play guitar, sell Avon and talk about the Lord, sharing her knowledge of the Bible. She was of the Holiness faith.

She was the wife of Harold Lloyd Boggess Sr., who’s awaited her arrival in heaven since 1993. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Ken and Ted Gunter.

Left behind to cherish her memory are sons, Jerry Lee Gunter Sr. and wife, Loma, Billy Gene Gunter Sr. and wife, Wanda, of Beckley and Harold Lloyd Boggess Jr. and companion, Marsha, of Prosperity; daughters, Lloydette Deal and husband, Robin, and Barbara Ann Adkins and husband, Ray, of Lanark; brothers, Fred Gunter and wife, Myrtle, Ellis Gunter of Piney View, Virgil Gunter and wife, Millie, and Melvin Gunter and wife, Joyce, and a sister, Lois Brown, all of Ohio; special aunt, Tisha Moore of Newport, Tenn., grandchildren, Derrick James, Jerry Gunter Jr., Alexis Adkins, Justin Richmond, Kelsi and Dillon Boggess, Cliff Martin, Billy and Patrick Gunter and Doreen Radford; and several great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Boggess was a very loving, kind, generous mother, grandmother and sister. She will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by all.

Service will be 1 p.m. Sunday, June 25, at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with Evangelist Dennis Williams officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Derrick Lee James, Jerry Lee Gunter Jr., Justin Lloyd Richmond, John Wheeler, Robin Deal and Charles Walker.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that everyone try to live as Jesus did. Pray without ceasing, love one for another and be kind to each other. Donations may be sent to anyone in need.

MOUNT HOPE — Carol Burger, 57, passed away Thursday, June 22, 2006.

James Willard ‘Jimmy’ Carter

James Willard “Jimmy” Carter, 80, of Beckley, passed away Wednesday, June 21, 2006, at the Beckley VA Medical Center surrounded by family.

Born Dec. 19, 1925, at Glen Rogers, he was the son of the late James T. and Hopie Treadway Carter.

Mr. Carter was of the Baptist faith and was a World War II U.S. Marine Corps veteran. After the war Mr. Carter worked at General Motors Corp. and Mahones in Michigan. He returned to West Virginia where he retired from Lee Norse Manufacturing. During his retirement, he worked as an attendant at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home for many years, and as a volunteer driver or the Beckley VA Medical Center. He enjoyed helping others and made many friends there.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Carter.

Survivors include a sister, Margaret Dickson of Beckley; nieces, Deborah Keaton, Ann Dickson, Drema Tomczyk, Lynn Stewart, Carrie Sturms and Kay Ferguson; several great-nieces and nephews; and great-great-nieces, nephews and cousins.

Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Dewey Lowe officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.

Friends may call one hour before service.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 2157, Beckley, WV 25802.

George William Cook

ITMANN — George William Cook, 69, was last seen on Christmas night 2002, and his remains were found March 23, 2004, on Pinnacle Creek. He will be laid to rest Saturday, June 24.

He was born July 3, 1933, at Wolf Pen and was the youngest of nine children of the late Ott Sanders Cook and Louvennie Ellen “Tinnie” Mullens Cook.

Mr. Cook was a retired coal miner who last worked at the U.S. Steel Itmann Mine. Before becoming a miner, he worked as a mechanic and service station manager at the old Itmann “Company” store. In his earlier years, he also had worked for several logging companies.

He loved being outdoors, observing nature, walking, shooting, hunting, fishing and gardening. He enjoyed reading about and talking about his English ancestors, the first settlers in Wyoming County and his Cherokee heritage. He gained much joy from his dogs, Sparkle and Lucy, who were his constant companions during his later years.

Mr. Cook’s wife of over 30 years, Carlee Parris Cook, passed away in October 1997; a stepdaughter, April Pickett Miller, passed away in October 2004; four sisters, Esther Beverly (husband, Bert, deceased), Cleatus Mullens (husband, Leonard, deceased), Bertie Lilly and Ruby Beverly (husband, Onnie, deceased); and two siblings died at birth.

Survivors include a brother, Collett Cook of Durham, N.C., formerly of Wolf Pen; a sister, Hettie Jackson of Greenville, Tenn.; a brother-in-law, Carlos “Mack” Lilly of Beckley; special nieces and nephews, including Paula Faye Cook of Durham, Gary Dean Cook Sr. of Beckley, Raymond Beverly of Wolf Pen, Louise Beverly Blaylock of Princeton and Harry William Stanley Jr. of Pineville.

Friends and relatives will forever remember Mr. Cook’s honesty, generosity and compassion. He often assisted others in need while leading a quiet, simple life himself. He spent his youth helping to care for his father, a disabled coal miner who was bedridden for 19 years.

Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, June 24, at Tankersley Funeral Home Chapel, Mullens, with the Rev. Charles “Butch” Acord officiating. Burial will follow in Cook Family cemetery, Welch/Pineville Road.

Friends may visit with the family one hour before service Saturday at the funeral home.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to a church, charity or Humane Society.

Gerald Mason Cummings

SUMMERSVILLE — Gerald Mason Cummings, 90, died Thursday, June 22, 2006.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Memorial United Methodist Church, Summersville. Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. today at White Funeral Home, Summersville.

Maxine Dematteis

IRON STATION, N.C. — Maxine Dematteis, 80, formerly of Mullensville, passed away Monday, June 19, 2006, at her residence.

Born July 8, 1925, at Winona, she was the daughter of the late Clyde and Thelma Holmes Brown.

Mrs. Dematteis was a homemaker.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Dematteis; a daughter, Linda Garrett; a son, James Clayton Dematteis; and a sister, June Hobbs.

Survivors include two daughters, Brenda Hood and her husband, Larry, of Charlotte, N.C., and Maria Fairbanks and her husband, Andy, of Stanley, N.C.; a brother, Sonny Brown of Barrackville; five grandchildren, Jeff Garrett and his wife, Marcy, of Belews Creek, N.C., Todd Garrett and his wife, Tassey, of Winchester, Ky., Kellie Hood and her husband, Bill Baker, of Vienna, Va., Travis Hood of Charlotte and Nikki Fairbanks of Stanley; and seven great-grandchildren, Austin Garrett, Logan Garrett, Ethan Garrett, Kylie Garrett, Bailey Garrett, Tyonia Fairbanks and Denise Fairbanks.

Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Calfee Funeral Service Chapel, Pineville, with the Rev. Tommy Knotts officiating. Burial will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny.

Pallbearers will be Jeff Garrett, Todd Garrett, Travis Hood, Bill Baker, Jeremy Green and Veto Bartell.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Thomas E. Dotson

LEWISBURG — Thomas E. Dotson, 74, died June 22, 2006.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Rosewood cemetery, Lewisburg. There will be no visitation.

Harold Lee Dufour

GATEWOOD — Harold Lee Dufour, 73, died Wednesday, June 21, 2006, at his home.

Edward Fred Felber

Edward Fred Felber, 89, of Bradley, started his eternal life Wednesday, June 21, 2006.

Born July 28, 1916, in Chicago, Ill., he was the son of the late Edward Felber and Kathtyn Trauth Felber.

Edward was the owner of E.F. Felber Engineering Co. of Chicago, a member of Maple Fork Baptist Church, the Medinah Masonic Temple of Chicago, commander of the Shriner Black Horse Troop and president of the International Shriner Horse Patrol of Chicago, and an avid golfer.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Mary Catherine Lilly Felber; his children, Matthew Felber of Tampa, Fla., Eugene David Felber and wife, Nancy Pyron, of Seattle, Wash., Janet England and husband, Peter, of Springfield, Va., Jack Felber of Bativia, Ill., and Joan Yoder of Alaska; a sister, Lorrine Knoll of Oak Forest, Ill.; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at High Lawn Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill, with the Rev. Robert Barley officiating. Interment will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.

The family will receive friends 1 p.m. until time of service Saturday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Southern West Virginia, P.O. Box 1472, Beckley, WV 25802-1472, southern West Virginia’s best kept secret, which the family would like to thank for their wonderful care and support during Edward’s illness.

Doris M. Gallaher

FLATWOODS — Doris M. Gallaher, 76, went home to be with her Lord on Tuesday, June 20, 2006, after a long, courageous battle with lung cancer.

She was born Jan. 27, 1930, at Holly, a daughter of Lena Dennison Given of Frametown and the late George W. Dennison.

Mrs. Gallaher was a faithful member of Gassaway United Methodist Church, where she served on the Administration Board, United Methodist Women and was a member and teacher of the Eureka Sunday School class. She was a past member of the GFWC-Woman’s Club of Gassaway.

She was a devoted wife, mother, daughter, sister, friend and, above all else, a devout Christian who was always willing to listen with a compassionate, loving ear. She will be missed by all those who were blessed to know her.

In addition to her father, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Edward R. Gallaher; brothers, Clark and Kenneth Dennison; and an infant son, Michael Allen Gallaher.

She is survived by her mother, Lena Dennison Given of Frametown; sons, Mark E. Gallaher and wife, Linda, of New Hampshire and Scott Gallaher and wife, Connie, of Flatwoods; daughter, Ann Richmond and husband, Bruce, of Beckley; sister, Karen Sue Jones of Charleston; grandsons, Matthew Gallaher of California and Seth Adams of Beckley; granddaughter, Courtney Sartin of Beckley; and a special lady she loved like a daughter, Lucy Stalnaker.

Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Gassaway United Methodist Church with the Rev. Stephen J. White and the Rev. Gene Adkins officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Hebron United Methodist Church cemetery, Caress.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at Richard M. Roach Funeral Home, 708 Braxton St., Gassaway.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorial contributions be made to Gassaway United Methodist Church, Seventh and Braxton Streets, Gassaway, WV 26624, or to Hospice Care, 1129 Broad St., Suite 300, Summersville, WV 26651.
