Joseph R. ‘Joe’ Cheuvront

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — Joseph R. “Joe” Cheuvront, 83, formerly of Lewisburg, passed away Wednesday, June 21, 2006, at Hilton Head Regional Medical Center.

He was born Oct. 3, 1922, in Clarksburg, and was the son of the late Rev. Wesley L. and Elizabeth May Cheuvront.

Joe attended Bridgeport High School and graduated from Unidis High in West Milford in 1940. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946, including a tour of duty in the European Theater of World War II. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in accounting from Fairmont State College in 1951.

Joe’s career spanned many vocations. In his teens he worked as a clerk and delivery boy at an old-fashioned country store and during his early college he was employed as a butcher. After his discharge from the Army he started and managed several businesses in Bridgeport, twice in partnership with his brother, Charlie, and his wife, Gayle. These included Cheuvronts Inc., a plumbing and heating company and grocery store, Cheuvront Brothers Builders and Cheuvront and Frush Real Estate and Insurance. In the 1950s Joe’s career took him to Texas and later to Richmond, Va., where he was office manager for the mechanical contracting firm B&G Olsen Co. In 1957 he came to Lewisburg and along with his wife, Helen, started Cheuvront’s Supply, a plumbing and heating wholesale business. In 1959, he, Helen, brother Charlie and his wife, Gayle, started Weslakin Corp., a mechanical contracting and plumbing business that grew into a plumbing and heating wholesale supply business serving most of West Virginia. He served as CEO and general manager until the business was sold to Hajoca Corp. in 1985. He also served as president of the Central Wholesalers Association for one year and director of the American Supply Association for three one-year terms.

After retiring in 1985, he and Helen enjoyed traveling, mostly stateside and Canada. Avid fans of WVU Mountaineer sports, Joe and Helen enjoyed traveling to both home and away football games with family and friends. Joe and Helen have lived on Hilton Head Island, S.C., since 1999.

He is survived by Helen Lada Cheuvront, his devoted wife of 58 years; son, Charles Thomas “Tom” Cheuvront; daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Scott Powell, all of Lewisburg; a sister, Virginia May Walker of Clarksburg; four grandchildren, Holly McCallister of San Diego, Calif., Melody Cheuvront of Richmond, Zachary Taylor of Charleston and Joseph Cheuvront of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two stepgrandchildren, Brandon and Elizabeth Powell; and a great-grandson, Zuri McCallister of San Diego.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Charlie and William; sisters, Florence Cheuvront and Julia Dumire; and daughter, Jean.

Donna Susan Lilly Howell

PIPESTEM — On a bright sunny June morning, God sent his angels to retrieve one of his children. Donna Susan Lilly Howell, 46, of True Road, Pipestem, while in the arms of her husband and her family by her bedside holding her hands, was carried home to be with her Lord and Savior after a courageous battle with breast cancer.

She started her earthly life June 23, 1959, and departed June 22, 2006. She was the daughter of Patricia Ann Ayers Lilly Michelson of Frederick, Md., and the late James Arley Lilly, Sr.

For the last 15 years she was employed as inventory control clerk at St. Luke’s Hospital of Bluefield, but the work that she truly enjoyed was the joy that she brought to others. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school, sang in the choir and handed out hugs and kisses in large quantities. A smile was truly her best friend. She was a devoted wife, mother, daughter, sister and grandmother to her family and anyone else who needed a small ray of sunshine.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 31 years, Kenneth Gerald “Jerry” Howell, the son of Martin “Junior” and Mary Howell of Pipestem; her mother, Patricia, and stepfather, Howard Michelson, of Frederick; her two children whom she cherished, Kimberly Hope Howell Meadows and husband, Bruce, of Camp Creek and James Kenneth Howell and wife, Ashley, of Pipestem, and one little fellow known as “Nana’s love,” her grandson, Mason Allen Meadows; a brother, “her buddy,” James “Chucky Ray” Lilly and wife, Tammy, of Pinnacle Rock; a sister, Rhonda “Rhonda-Ho” Reyes and husband, Ben, of Hedgesville; and other family members, too many to mention, whom she adored and cherished and have truly not been forgotten.

At 12 p.m. Sunday, June 25, we will celebrate the life of Donna Susan Lilly Howell at Bethel United Methodist Church near Princeton with Pastor Casper Dalton, her son James Kenneth and her brother Chucky Ray as speakers. Burial will follow in Lilly Family cemetery, Gravely Point Road, Pipestem.
