John C. "Doc" Plum

John Carl "Doc" Plum, 78, of Mt. Clare, died at 2:15 a.m. Wednesday, July 25, 2001, at the Charleston Area Medical Center in Charleston.

He was born April 2, 1923, at Grafton, a son of the late Benjamin and Dollie Pratt Plum.

He was twice married. His first wife, Vivian Van Horn Plum, preceded him in death. His second wife, Rose Ellen Simons Plum, whom he married November 3, 1984, survives.

Also surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Roger (Dietra) Westfall of Scott Depot, Mrs. Gerald (Joan) Merriner of Jane Lew, Mrs. Roger (Linda) Daugherty of Lost Creek, and Mrs. Blaine (Karen) Wilson of Sykesville, Md.; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Michael (Sharon) Spurlock of Huntington and Mrs. Tim (Linda) Brannon of Clarksburg; four grandchildren, one great-grandson, seven stepgrandchildren, four stepgreat-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by one sister, Maxine Grimm; and an infant grandchild.

Mr. Plum was a Methodist. He enjoyed golfing and was a member of Bel Meadow Country Club. He was also a member of Meuse Argonne VFW Post 573; the Senior Citizens; and AARP. He attended Roosevelt-Wilson High School and graduated from Washington-Irving High School. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and retired from the Adamston Flat Glass Company.
A funeral service was held Saturday, July 28, at 3 p.m., at Davis-Weaver Funeral Home in Clarksburg, with Rev. O.D. Harman and Pastor John Smith officiating. Interment followed in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.

Thucie Smith

Mrs. Thucie McCartney Smith, 89, of Sophia, N.C., died July 13, 2001, at High Point Regional Hospital in High Point, N.C.

She was born September 24, 1911, in Upshur County, a daughter of the late William Clarence and Sarah Fornash McCartney.

Her husband, Charles C. Smith, whom she married November 4, 1938, preceded her in death January 10, 1990.

Surviving are one daughter, Mildred Wilfong of Vienna, Ohio; one son, Calvin Smith of Archdale, N.C.; five sisters, Goldie Chapman of Frenchton, Anna Cutright and Clara Gould, both of French Creek, Flora Westfall of Nutter Fort, and Rosa Lea Tenney of Huntington; one brother, Perry McCartney of East Detroit, Mich.; 10 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Smith had been a resident of the Sophia community for the past 17 years. She previously lived at Ronceverte. She was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church.
A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 16, at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, with Rev. David Cunha officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale, N.C., was in charge of funeral arrangements. Memorial donations in Mrs. Smith's name may be made to Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, 4732 Robbins Country Road, Trinity, N.C. 27370; or Hospice of the Piedmont, 1801 Westchester Drive, High Point, N.C. 27262.

Morris "Bud"Walker

Morris W. "Bud" Walker, 70, of Clarksburg, died Saturday, July 28, 2001, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, following surgery.

He was born July 1, 1931, at Elkridge, a son of the late James and Ustina McLaughlin Walker.

He was twice married. Both his first wife, Dorothy Leola Ferrell Walker, whom he married February 23, 1951, and his second wife, Barbara Joanne Bartlett Yeager Walker, whom he married September 13, 1974, preceded him in death.

Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Garland and Kathy Walker of Clarksburg and Craig and Nancy Walker of Morgantown; three stepchildren, Judy Morris and her husband Edsel of James Island, S.C., Mike Yeager and his wife Concetta of Clarksburg, and Jeff Yeager of Jane Lew; seven grandchildren, Michael and Andrew Walker, both of Clarksburg, Jessica, Daniel and Samuel Walker, all of Morgantown, Haylee Howard and Cole Morris, both of James Island, S.C.; four sisters, Mrs. Emma Jones and Mrs. Leon (Zelma) Ohlinger, both of Gauley Bridge, Mrs. Maxine Gulley of Melbourne, Fla., and Mrs. Lowdermilk of Kimberly; a friend, Francie Yeager of Weston; and an aunt, Evelyn Holt of Chelyan.

He was also preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.

Mr. Walker was a member of Clarksburg Baptist Church, where he served as co-chairperson of the board of trustees. He was a 1949 graduate of East Bank High School and a member of Sunnycroft Country Club. He enjoyed his family, his church, and helping others. He had been associated with John C. Geise Engineers as a draftsman and had served as project engineer for Ingersoll Rand and Dresser Industries.
A funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Monday, July 30, at Davis-Weaver Funeral Home in Clarksburg, with Rev. David Hume presiding. Interment followed in the Bridgeport cemetery. Memorial donations in Mr. Walker's name may be made to Clarksburg Baptist Church.

Florence Cole Batten

Florence Cole Batten, 87, of Bridgeport, formerly of Terrace Avenue in Weston, died at 4 a.m. Monday, November 26, 2001, at her home, following a brief illness.

She was born July 20, 1914, at Electra, Tex., a daughter of Robert E. and Una Chipps Cole.

Her husband, James French Batten, whom she married February 22, 1940, preceded her in death December 20, 2000.

Surviving are one daughter, Patricia Sue Batten of Bridgeport; one son and daughter-in-law, Dr. James R. and Alice Batten of Charlottesville, Va.; two grandchildren, Scott A. and Cathy Batten of Weyers Cave, Va., and Susan and Chris Budahl of Falls Church, Va.

She was also preceded in death by one brother, Robert E. Cole Jr.; and three sisters, Amy Teason, Betty Sue Cole, and Patricia Cole.

Mrs. Batten retired from the West Virginia Glass Specialty Company in Weston with several years of service. She was a member and past president of the Weston Women's Club and a member of the Weston Garden Club and St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Weston.
Friends will be received today, Wednesday, November 28, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., at Boyle Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, November 29, at the funeral home, with Mrs. Batten's grandson, Scott A. Batten, presiding. Interment will follow in the Machpelah cemetery.

William Corder Jr.

William Ernest "Bill" Corder Jr., 83, of Weston, formerly of Salem, died Sunday, November 25, 2001, at his residence, following an extended illness.

He was born July 26, 1918, at Salem, a son of the late William Ernest and Arah Bly Stutler Corder.

His wife, the former Eloise Irene George, whom he married May 28, 1939, survives.

Also surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Charlene Sue and Patrick J. Rericha of Parma, Ohio; one son and daughter-in-law, Dr. William Thomas and Sarah B. Corder of Morgantown; four grandchildren, Kristin Foran, Erin Tkachik, Nathan Rericha, and Brandon Rericha; three great-grandchildren, Garrett Jeffrey Tkachik, Taylor Anne Rericha, and Tyler Peyton Foran; one brother, George E. Corder of Zanesville, Ohio; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Dorthea Corder; and two brothers, Harry Raymond Corder and Joseph Bond Corder.

Mr. Corder graduated from Salem High School with the Class of 1937. He served his country with distinction during World War II on the Battleship U.S.S. New Mexico. He was retired from the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company as store manager with 42 years of service in Salem, Pennsboro, Shinnston, Belington, Weston, and Bridgeport. He was a member of St. Matthew United Methodist Church and Weston Lodge 10 AF&AM.
A funeral service will be held today, Wednesday, November 28, at 11 a.m., at Floyd Funeral Home, with Rev. Michael Linger officiating. Interment will follow in the K of P cemetery at Salem.

Thomas H. Covey

Thomas H. Covey, 93, of 463 Center Avenue in Weston, died at 5:30 a.m. Thursday, November 22, 2001, at Morgan Manor in Morgantown, following a brief illness.

He was born November 19, 1908, in Raleigh County, a son of the late Daniel Owen and Josephine (Trail) Covey.

His wife, Margaret Elizabeth Bailey Covey, whom he married March 2, 1935, preceded him in death August 22, 1998.

Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Thomas H. Covey Jr. and his wife Hope of Morgantown; two daughters and sons-in-law, Myra Jo and Thomas D. White of Fort Ashby and Sharon and Billy D. Lindsey of Parkersburg; seven grandchildren, Joda Lynn Covey Fogerson, Emily Covey Kiral, Mya White Fields, Kathie White Whiteman, Joy White Linthicum, Kristin Thomas Lindsey, and Jeffrey Don Lindsey; seven great-grandchildren; and two faithful neighbors who watched over him, Roberta Springston and Andy Sleigh.

He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Mr. Covey was part owner and a salesman at the former Gregg Grocery in Weston. Prior to his retirement, he was a wholesale salesman for Fulks Brothers Sporting Goods in Clarksburg. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Weston and Weston Masonic Lodge 10 AF&AM. He was an All State football player at Woodrow Wilson High School and a charter member of the Woodrow Wilson Sports Hall of Fame. He played football and baseball for the West Virginia University Mountaineers and was an avid WVU sports fan. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing.
A funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Sunday, November 25, at Floyd Funeral Home, with Rev. Rick Farmer officiating. Interment followed in the Weston Masonic cemetery. Graveside rites were accorded by Weston Masonic Lodge No. 10 AF&AM. Memorial contributions may be made to Weston Masonic Lodge 10 AF&AM Temple Restoration Fund, PO Box 1, Weston, WV 26452.

Robert G. Metzgar

Robert G. Metzgar, 71, of Benton, Ark., died Sunday, November 25, 2001.

He was born December 8, 1929, at Weston, a son of the late John and Alma Metzgar.

Surviving are two sons, Robert G. Metzgar Jr. of Benton, Ark., and John G. Metzgar of Havelock, N.C.; two brothers, Richard H. and James K. Metzgar, both of West Virginia; one sister, Willa Bailey of West Virginia; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Mr. Metzgar was a cable splicer for Bell Atlantic. He was a Korean War veteran, having served with the U.S. Marine Corps, and a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church and VFW Post 1976 in Weston.
A private graveside service will be held Friday, November 30, at the Masonic cemetery in Weston. Ashby Funeral Home in Benton, Ark., is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Ida M. Moneypenny

Ida M. Moneypenny, 95, of 181 Aspen Road in Weston, died at 9:40 a.m. Monday, November 26, 2001, at Crestview Manor in Jane Lew, following an extended illness.

She was born March 16, 1906, at Birch River, a daughter of the late John and Texa Simmons Tingler.

Her husband, William S. Moneypenny, whom she married in June 1925, preceded her in death August 4, 1968.

Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, William and Dessie Moneypenny of Route Four, Weston; five grandchildren, Sharon Butcher, Rick Smith, Jim Harper, Rosemary Pearce, and Susan Juber; seven great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Mattie Fisher of Little Birch.

She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Reva Harper; one granddaughter, Sandra Harrison; one grandson, Robert Harper; five brothers, Billy, Delbert, Argle, Sherman and Okey Tingler; and two sisters, Flossie Moneypenny and Gay Tingler.

Mrs. Moneypenny retired from the Louie Glass Factory in Weston with several years of service. She was a member of Bealls Mill United Methodist Church.
A funeral service will be held today, Wednesday, November 28, at 2 p.m., at Boyle Funeral Home, with Rev. Conrad Tenney officiating. Interment will follow in the Oak Grove cemetery.

Porter Wilfong

Porter Charles Wilfong, 59, of Jane Lew, died at his home Tuesday, November 27, 2001, following an extended illness.

He was born January 18, 1942, in Braxton County, a son of the late Russell and Ermel Marks Wilfong.

His wife, Judy Kimbrew Wilfong, survives.

Also surviving are four sons and three daughters-in-law, Michael and Karen Wilfong of West Milford, Mark and Jennifer Pellerito of Kincheloe, Matt and Linda Wilfong of Stonewood, and Jason Wilfong of Morgantown; one stepdaughter, Tina Manno of Idamay; two sisters, Erma Ruth Michaels and Greta Mae Jones, both of Ohio; one brother, James Wilfong of Ohio; six grandchildren, Christina Wilfong, Josh Wilfong, Chelsea Wilfong, Katie Wilfong, Tanner Wilfong, and Abbie Wilfong.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Evalee Denis.

Mr. Wilfong was a truck salesman at Harry Green Chevrolet for several years. He was a member of the Jane Lew Lions Club and the Church of the Nazarene in Weston. He enjoyed farming, hunting, and spending time with his family and favorite dog, Angel.
Friends will be received at Morris Funeral Home in Jane Lew today, Wednesday, November 28, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, November 29, at New Bethel United Methodist Church at Good Hope, with Rev. Roy Jones officiating (the body will lie in state from noon to 1 p.m. at the church). Burial will follow in the Good Hope Masonic cemetery.

DeWilla Edith Brown

DeWilla Edith Brown, 85, of Greensburg, Ind., formerly of Buckhannon, died Saturday, January 26, 2002, at her home.

She was born January 14, 1917, at Gandeeville, a daughter of the late Omar and Bernice Bailey Whited.

Her husband, Harry E. Brown, whom she married December 21, 1934, preceded her in death October 12, 1984.

Surviving are one son, Harry "Buck" Brown of Weston; two daughters, Mrs. Harold (June) Reed and Mrs. Gary (Karon Sue) McCartney, both of Greensburg, Ind.; one brother, John Paul Whited of Wadsworth, Ohio; one sister, Delma Bailey of Hurricane; seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by two daughters, Lela Jane and Nancy Ann Whited; one brother, Lloyd Whited; and one sister, Thelma Radcliff.

Mrs. Brown was a homemaker. She attended Free Methodist Church in Greensburg, Ind.
Friends will be received from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, January 31, at Tomblyn-Whitescarver Funeral Chapel in Buckhannon. A funeral service will be held Friday, February 1, at 2 p.m., at the funeral home. Interment will follow in the Heavner cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Gideons.
