Barbara Ellen Wright

Barbara Ellen Wright, 73, of Valley Chapel Rd. in Weston, died at 8:18 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, at United Hospital Center in Clarksburg, following an extended illness.

She was born June 27, 1929, at Weston, a daughter of the late Guy Austin and Reva Grace (Harris) Taylor.

Her husband, Willard James Wright, preceded her in death Mar. 27, 1995.

Surviving are two sons, Homer "Bud" Taylor of Weston and Anthony Wright of Bridgeport; three grandchildren, David Taylor, Michael Taylor, and Kendra Wright; several stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Patricia Buckingham; three brothers, John, William and Guy Lonzo Taylor; and one sister, Mary Kavula.

Mrs. Wright was a former checker for Schmitt's Baking Company in Baltimore, Md., with 32 years of service. She attended Word of Life Church at Butchersville and was a member of Baker's Confectionary Local 87 of Baltimore, Md.

A funeral service was held Sunday, Jan. 26, at 3:30 p.m., at Floyd Funeral Home, with Pastor Philip Strauss officiating. Interment followed in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.

Ernest "Ray" Barnette

Ernest "Ray" Barnette, 88, of 109 Crescent St., Weston, died at 12:10 p.m. Monday, March 31, 2003, at Holbrook Nursing Home in Buckhannon, following an extended illness.

He was born June 3, 1914, in Braxton County, a son of the late Grover Cleveland and Letha Ann Barnette.

He was twice married, first to the former Mary Carpenter, who preceded him in death, and then to his wife of 20 years, the former Elsie Dot (Stout) Butler, who survives.

Also surviving are four sons and one daughter, Ray Barnette Jr. and his wife, Leah, of Charlotte, N.C., Paul Joseph Barnette and his wife, Mary, of Elyria, Ohio, James E. Barnette and his wife, Debbie, of Advance, N.C., David L. Barnette of Norwalk, Ohio, and Martha Jean Donaldson and her husband, Willis, of Grafton, Ohio; two brothers, Ralph Barnette and Vaughn Barnette, both of Weston; one sister, Wanda Robinson of Barrackville; three stepchildren, Timothy Blaine Butler and his wife, Dawn, of Normantown, Randy Jackson Butler and his wife, Debbie, of Normantown, and Robin E. James and her husband, Johnny, of Normantown; 17 grandchildren, 6 stepgrandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, 1 stepgreat-grandchild, 4 great-great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

He was also preceded in death by one son, Bobby Barnette; six brothers and sisters.

Mr. Barnette was ordained a Baptist minister in 1946. He was a member of New Life Southern Baptist Church in Weston. He was a glass blower for West Virginia Glass Specialty Company and Louie Glass Company in Weston for several years. He later retired from Ford Motor Company in Cleveland, Ohio, with 15 years of service.

A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 3, at New Life Southern Baptist Church, with Pastor Robert Perrine officiating. Interment followed in the Weston Masonic cemetery. Floyd Funeral Home was in charge of funeral arrangements.

Claire Elizabeth Cornette

Claire Elizabeth Cornette, two-day-old daughter of Franklin D. and Rhonda A. (Davis) Cornette of Clarksburg, died Wednesday, April 2, 2003, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.

She was born March 31, 2003, at Morgantown.

Surviving in addition to her parents are her paternal grandparents, Franklin and Ruby Cornette of Parkersburg; her maternal grandparents, Ron and Pam Davis of Weston; her maternal great-grandfather, Paul D. Davis of Weston; an uncle, Eddie Cornette of Portsmith, Va.; her godparents, Uncle Nick and Aunt Amy Davis of Morgantown; several great-uncles, great-aunts, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her paternal great-grandparents, Edgar and Claire Cornette and Adam and Mandy Stacy; and her maternal great-grandparents, Charles "Jack" and Freda Bernice Casto and Audra G. Davis.

A private graveside service was held April 6 at 2 p.m. at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Russell Furr officiating. Floyd Funeral Home was in charge of funeral arrangements.

Rita Hickok

Rita Hickok, 71, of Straley Addition, Jane Lew, died Friday, March 28, 2003, at 11:55 p.m., at Crestview Manor Nursing Home in Jane Lew.

She was born June 1, 1931, at Orlando, Fla., daughter of the late J. Roy and Allene Moon Hickok.

She was the last surviving member of her family.

She worked for Monongahela Power Company, retiring May 1, 1990, after 30 1/2 years. She attended Lost Creek Seventh-Day Baptist Church and was a lover of all animals.

A memorial graveside service was held Sunday, April 6, at 2 p.m., at Broad Run cemetery, with Pastor Donald Shackleford officiating. Morris Funeral Home of Jane Lew was in charge of funeral arrangements.

Lorraine M. Rowan

Lorraine M. Rowan, 57, a resident of Crestview Nursing Home of Jane Lew, formerly of 401 John St., Weston, died Monday, April 7, 2003, at Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital in Weston, following an extended illness.

She was born Nov. 2, 1945, at Weston, a daughter of the late Jesse W. and Pauline (Garrett) Harris.

Surviving are three daughters, Donna Hefner and Cheri Tomblin, both of Weston, and Tammie Hamaoui of Largo, Fla.; one son, Terry Michael Rowan of Clearwater, Fla.; two sisters, Judith A. Rowan of Glenville and Grace P. Rowan of Hendersonville, N.C.; one brother, Michael Harris of Weston; nine grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and her ex-husband, Denver Junior Rowan.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one grandchild, Gregory Daniel Scott.

Mrs. Rowan was a nursing assistant in Norfolk, Va., and at Crestview Nursing Home of Jane Lew. She attended the Weston Church of God.

Friends will be received at Floyd Funeral Home today, Wednesday, April 9, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, April 10, at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Dr. Randall Hughes officiating. Interment will follow in the Peterson cemetery.

Hugh Carroll Roy

Hugh Carroll Roy, 64, of Route 1, French Creek, died at 1:24 a.m. on April 6, 2003.

He was born Jan. 3, 1939, at Ellamore, a son of the late Hugh Anderson Roy and Dessie Virginia Brain Queen, who survives at Ellamore.

His wife, Betty Ann Hawkins, whom he married April 20, 1963, survives.

Surviving in addition to his mother and his wife are two sons and daughters-in-law, Hugh Randall and Cheri Roy of French Creek and James Anderson and Jennifer Roy of Dailey; one daughter, Diana Roy of Buckhannon; five grandchildren, Amanda Lea Roy of Houston, Tex., Justin Everett Roy of Adrian, Hugh Michael Allen Roy of French Creek, Eric Scott Roy of French Creek, and Nicholas James Roy of Dailey.

One brother, James L. Roy, and one granddaughter, Camilla Roy, preceded him in death.

Mr. Roy was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps and a member of the Church of Christ at Alexander. He was working in the shipping department of Corhart Refractories at the time of his retirement.

Friends will be received at Robert M. Vincent Funeral Home on Thursday, April 10, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. A funeral service will be held Friday, April 11, at 2 p.m., at the Church of Christ in Buckhannon, with Evangelist Darell Toothman officiating. The body will lie in state at the church from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Burial will follow in the Mt. Union cemetery. Full military honors will be accorded at the gravesite.

Helen F. Stutler

Helen F. Stutler, 70, of 401 John St. (Weston Arbors), Weston, died at 5:45 p.m. Monday, March 31, 2003, at her residence, following an extended illness.

She was born March 13, 1933, in Harrison County, a daughter of the late James Curtis Murphy and Louie May (Lewis) Murphy.

She was twice married, first to Donald Lee Leavitt, who preceded her in death, and then to Mark Monroe Stutler, who also preceded her in death.

Surviving are eight children, Dorothy Skinner, Sandra Bowman, Mark Leavitt, Dave Leavitt, Buddy Leavitt, Virginia Lake, and Kay Henline, all of Weston, and Donna Murphy of Jane Lew; 11 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Guy Murphy of Clarksburg and Lawrence Murphy of Charles Town; her twin sister, Ellen Grimes of Elkins; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Viola Henline and Daisy Hyson; one brother, Argle Murphy; and two grandchildren, Joshua Skinner and Timmy Henline.

Mrs. Stutler was a homemaker, a member of the ladies auxiliary of the Weston Fraternal Order of Eagles, and a Protestant. She enjoyed sewing.

A funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Friday, April 4, at Boyle Funeral Home, with Rev. Clifford West officiating.

Sherrill James Bleigh

Sherrill James "Shorty" Bleigh, 65, of Route 1, Walkersville, died Saturday, June 14, 2003, at Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital in Weston.

He was born June 26, 1937, at Kress, in Braxton County, a son of the late James E. Bleigh and Bernice Knicely Bleigh, who died March 31, 2003.

His wife, Karen McCartney Bleigh, whom he married Dec. 29, 1961, survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Karen Lawler of Walkersville and Lorretta Snider and her husband, Rodney, of New Milton; one son, James Bleigh and his wife, Angela, of Martinsburg; seven grandchildren and one great-grandson; three brothers and one sister.

He was also preceded in death by one brother.

Mr. Bleigh retired as a custodian for the Lewis County Board of Education. He was a former member of the Walkersville Volunteer Fire Department; served in the U.S. Army; and attended Mission Independent Church of Walkersville.

A funeral service was held Tuesday, June 17, at 1 p.m., at Alkire Funeral Chapel in Ireland, with the Rev. Earl Cayton officiating. Interment followed in the Kincaid cemetery. Memorial donations in Mr. Bleigh's name may be made to the Kincaid cemetery Fund, in care of Gwendolyn Rexroad, 412 Buttermilk Road, Ireland, WV 26376.

Dorothy "Granny" Bright

Dorothy "Granny" Bright, 86, of 168 S. Kanawha St., Buckhannon, died Wednesday, June 11, 2003, at Davis Memorial Hospital in Elkins.

She was born Sept. 4, 1916, at Weston, a daughter of the late Eli Monroe Marsh and Lucy Bird Ratliff Marsh.

Her husband, Homer Lee Bright, preceded her in death.

Surviving are one sister, Pearl Clifton of Weston; two grandsons, Mark Riggs and his wife, Margaret, of French Creek, and Gregory Riggs and his wife, Cheryl, of Buckhannon; three granddaughters, Susan Arey of Buckhannon, Robyn Simons and her husband, John, of Buckhannon, Jane Riggs and Derek Younkman of Bellefontaine, Ohio; two special nieces, Juanita Rossey of Jane Lew and Jo Edwards of Weston; one son-in-law, Dale F. Riggs; 5 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and 8 great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Carolyn Rosalie Riggs; two sisters and seven brothers; her first husband, Russell Lantz; and her second husband, Charles Presley Gay.

Mrs. Bright was employed by C&P Telephone Company. She was also the former owner for 20 years of Maggie's Restaurant in Buckhannon, a favorite hangout for West Virginia Wesleyan College students and local residents. She was famous for her homemade pies in the 1970s and 1980s. She was a born-again Christian and a member of Order of Eastern Star Chapter 86; Buckhannon Elks Club 1736; Buckhannon Moose Lodge 598; WVF Post 3663; and the Upshur County Republican Women.

At the request of the deceased, the body will be cremated and there will be no public visitation or funeral. A private family memorial service, with the traditional scattering of the ashes, will be held at a later date. Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
