Orpha Skidmore Hyer

Orpha Skidmore Hyer of Flatwoods died May 30, 2004, at Braxton County Memorial Hospital following a lengthy illness.

She was born December 12, 1901, a daughter of the late Samuel J. Skidmore and Phoebe Jane Skidmore of Flatwoods Run.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Orville Burton Hyer; brothers, Oley Skidmore, Charles Skidmore, and Jim Skidmore; one sister, Effie Skidmore.

Mrs. Hyre is survived by two daughters, Janet L. Burnside of Dunbar and Mary Ann Rogers and husband, Jim, of Flatwoods; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was a homemaker, devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a member of the Flatwoods United Methodist Church and was recognized as Flatwoods Centurion during the Flatwoods Centurion Days Celebration. Mrs. Hyer attended Valley Dale Grade School and Flatwoods High School, finishing at the Sutton High School. She received a Standard Normal Teaching Degree from Glenville State College and taught in elementary schools throughout Braxton County.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 2, 2004, at 11:30 a.m. at the Stockert-Gibson Funeral Home, Flatwoods, with the Reverend Vaughn James officiating. Burial will be in the Flatwoods cemetery.

Virginia Lee Jones

Virginia Lee (Allman) Jones, 52, of Route 1, Orlando, died at 10:40 p.m., Friday, May 28, 2004, in Heartland of Clarksburg following an extended illness.

She was born in Weston on June 28, 1951, a daughter of the late Willis David Allman and Flora Ellen (Webb) Allman. She was married to Clyde Gilbert Jones, who survives.

Also surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Devin Paul Sponaugle and wife, Stephanie of Germany and Joe Sponaugle and wife, Jessica Britton, of Middlebourne; three grandchildren, Jasmine Nicole Sponaugle, Selena Mae Sponaugle, and Jonah Paul Sponaugle; two step-sons, Clyde Gilbert Jones, Jr., of Tanner and Rodney Dean Jones of Weston; four step-daughters, Nikia Renee Lunsford of Camden, Debra Weaver of Alum Bridge, Mary Jane Helmick of Copen, and Lorrain Bailey of McEwen, Tenn.; several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by three brothers, Earl Junior Allman of Nutterfort, Charles David Allman and wife, Cheryl McCormick of Lost Creek, and Paul Kenneth Allman of Jane Lew; six sisters, Carolyn Sue Carroll and companion, Marvin "Slim" Myers, Charlotte Jane Roach and husband, Tom, all of Clarksburg, Ellen McCray Auvil and husband, Gary, of Quiet Dell, Laura Mae Allman and Sandra Kay Allman, both of Reynoldsville, and Peggy Lou Geddas of Port Richey, Fla.; two sisters-in-law, Carla Allman of Clarksburg, and Blanche Gibson of Weston; one aunt, Carolyn Fitts; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by one son, Carl Lee Geddas; two sisters, Mary Ann Wagner and Brenda Jean Allman; and one brother, Eddie Carl Allman.

Mrs. Jones was a homemaker and a Methodist by faith.

Funeral services were held May 31 from the Floyd Funeral Home Chapel with the Pastor Mark Anderson officiating. Interment will follow in the Heater cemetery on Posey Run in Lewis County.

Junior Lee Peters

Junior Lee Peters, 61, of Grafton, died Friday, May 28, 2004, in United Hospital Center of Clarksburg following an extended illness.

He was born February 18, 1943, the oldest son of the late Orie Peters and Ethel (Hess) Peters.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Peters is preceded in death by one sister, Carolyn Peters.

He is survived by one brother, Dennis Peters and one sister, Donna Peters, both of Meadowview Apartments, Clarksburg.

Friends will be received at the Floyd Funeral Home, 402 Main Avenue, Weston, on Wednesday, June 2, 2004, from 12 noon until 1 p.m. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. from the Floyd Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in the Carder cemetery of Vadis.

Ilonda Lou Riffle

Ilonda Lou Riffle, 46, of Route 1, Orlando, died unexpectedly at her home May 28, 2004.

She was born March 25, 1958, in East Liverpool, Ohio, the daughter of the late Ordie and Lovie Nicholson. On November 9, 1991, she married Charles Junior Riffle, who preceded her in death.

Survivors include two sons, Charles Stanton Riffle at home and John W. Carter of Weston; three daughters and sons-in-law, Rachel Tietz and husband, Mike, of Weston, Molly Ramsey and husband, Reverend Jeff Ramsey of Bridgeport, and Teresa Dotson and husband, Donnie, of West Union; two sisters; one brother; six grandchildren, Andrew and Aaron Ramsey of Bridgeport, Steve and Donnie Dotson of West Union, and Dorothy and Ashley Carter also of West Union; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Riffle was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She dedicated many years of her life working as an aid for the Braxton County senior citizens. She was a graduate of Braxton County High School and was an active member of the Orlando Baptist Church, where she survived as secretary.

Funeral services were held May 31, 2004, at the Orlando Baptist Church with the Reverend Lonnie Ramsey officiating. Burial will follow in the Heater cemetery.

Betty A. Underwood

Betty A. Underwood, 81, of 412 Center Avenue, Weston, died at 10:24 a.m. Sunday, May 30, 2004, at her residence following an extended illness.

She was born on November 24, 1922, in West Union, a daughter of the late Tillman Ash and Estella (Ferrell) Ash. On June 27, 1942, she married Harry L. Underwood, Jr., who preceded her in death February 21, 1986.

She is preceded in death by one brother, Duane Ash, and her devoted dog, Morgan.

Survivors include four daughters and sons-in-law, Rebecca Ann Underwood of Salem, Harriet Lorraine Ash, "Betsy", and husband Connard of Parkersburg, Debra U. Wright of Weston, and Diane Linger and husband, Bill, of Weston; one sister, Eleanor Griffy of Pasadena; nine grandchildren, Elizabeth A. Hayhurst, L. Richard Scadden, Melinda L. Rutkowski, Karla A. Thomas and husband, Terry, Lesley M. Slaughter and husband, Jason, Ashley L. Wright and fiance, Justin Avington, Stephanie G. Ross and husband, Kevin, Kathryn S. Gissy, and James William Linger, III (Billy); eleven great-grandchildren, Meagan L. Hayhurst and fiance, Ron Frasier, Samantha L. Scadden, Amy R. Scadden, Trevor L. Rutkowski, Hayden C. Rutkowski, Zachary L. Thomas, Tara A. Thomas, Shelby P. Slaughter, Isaac A. Wright, Connor J. Avington, and Cameron S. Ross; one great-great-granddaughter, Emily Hayhurst Frasier; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Underwood was retired from Minnich Florist in Weston with several years service. She was a fifty-year member of the Eastern Star; a member of the Theresa Snaith Auxiliary of the Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital; past-president of GFWC-Pennsboro Womens Club; member of DAR (Daughters of American Revolution) Trans Allegheny Chapter #4048; member of the Lewis County Swinging Seniors; and a member of the Cotillion Club. She was a thirty-year member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, Pennsboro, and later St. Matthew United Methodist Church, Weston, where she was active in both church choirs. She was recognized by the West Virginia Senate as being an Outstanding West Virginian.

Friends may call at the Boyle Funeral Home, 322 Main Avenue, Weston, on Wednesday, June 2, 2004, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 3 at 11 a.m. from the Boyle Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend Clifford West and the Reverend Rupert Evans officiating. Interment will follow in the Weston Masonic cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Adopt-A-Friend c/o HK Casting, 384 U.S. Highway 19 South, Weston, WV 26452.

Ray H. Watson

Ray H. Watson, 80, of Elizabeth, died May 18, 2004, at Charleston Area Medical Center.

He was born July 23, 1923, in Oliphant, Pa., a son of the late George and Mary Fletcher Watson. Mr. Watson is survived by his wife of 57 years, Beatrice "Bea" Stewart Watson.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Becky Watson and her husband, Rodney; a son, Mike Watson and his wife Kandy; four grandchildren, Brian and Julie Watson, Ericka Watson Miller and husband, Michael, and Michelle Watson.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Carol, and two brothers, Robert and John.

Mr. Watson graduated from Weston High School in 1942. He attended Bethany College with the Navy V-12 program and Glenville State College, where he graduated in 1947. While at Glenville, he was the captain of the Pioneer football team. His talents as a football player earned him recognition as a member of the W.Va. Conference All-Time All-Conference 50 Year Football Team and an offer to play for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Mr. Watson also attended Pre-Midshipman School at Asbury Park, N.J., and Midshipman School at Cornell University. He earned double master's degrees from WVU.

He served his country for six years as a member of the U.S. Navy during WWII and the Korean Conflict as a special services officer. He served in the Pacific Theater as a skipper of an LCT 1311 and was discharged as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy Reserves.

Mr. Watson was well-known throughout W.Va. as a great high school and college football coach. He coached football, basketball, and baseball at Rupert High School from 1947 to 1950. He was head coach at Pt. Mugu-Naval Air Missile Center in Oxnard, Calif., where his team was the 11th Navel District Champions. He was the line coach of the Amphibious Force Pacific, Coronado, Calif. He coached basketball and football at Wirt County High School from 1954 to 1956, where his team was the 1956 Little Kanawha Conference Champions and then was Class A State Runner-up. He was head coach at the West Virginia Institute of Technology in Montgomery from 1957 to 1959, where he has the highest winning percentage of any Tech coach who coached more than 20 games in their career. He was defensive coordinator for the W.Va. University Mountaineers from 1960 to 1963.

After his stint as coach at WVU, he was called back to Wirt County High School where he served as principal from 1963 to 1979. Mr. Watson then "retired" only to come back and serve as Wirt's principal again and then head football coach at Federal Hocking High School in Stewart, Ohio, head football coach at Eastern High School in Reedsville, Ohio, where they were S.V.A.C. Tri-Champs and head coach at Hamilton Junior High School in Parkersburg. He also worked at Bow Valley Petroleum Resources in Palestine, W.Va.

He was president of the Little Kanawha Athletic Conference for three years, a member of the Board of Appeals of the W.Va. Secondary Schools Activities Commission and was elected to the Elizabeth City Council and the Wirt Count Board of Education. He served on the Wirt County Development Authority, the Wirt County Health Board, the Mid-Ohio Valley Hall of Fame Committee, and was commissioner of the Wirt County Little League for 16 years. He as a member of the AFM Lodge 82, part president of the Lions Club in Elizabeth and founder of the Wirt County Pop Warner football league, where he coached for three years.

His other honors include being named Principal of the Year and Retired Coach of the Year by the WV Coaches' Association, Lewis County Sports Great, WVU Institute of Technology Hall of Fame, Glenville State College Hall of Fame, and the Mid-Ohio Valley Sports Hall of Fame.

He was a member of the Elizabeth Baptist Church, where he served as deacon, Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent, "song leader" and trustee.

Bonnie Morgan

Bonnie Loraine Nicholson Morgan, 79, of Jane Lew, died Friday, July 30, 2004 at 9:30 a.m. at her residence following an extended illness.

She was born September 29, 1924 at Kincheloe in Harrison County, a daughter of the late Warden W. and Vena Alice (Jenkins) Nicholson. On January 3, 1944, she married Calvin Ralph Morgan of Jane Lew who survives.

Also surviving are four children and their spouses, Donald R. and Mae Morgan of Hepzibah, Linda L. and Lynn Childers of Buckhannon, Ruth A. and Ed Pratt of Jacksons Mill and Terry R. and Cheryl Morgan of Clarksburg; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Robert Nicholson of Ogden, Utah, and Ernest Nicholson of Riverside, Ca.; and one sister, Helen Galley of Baltimore, Md.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Stanley Nicholson.

Mrs. Morgan graduated from Unitis High School in 1943. She was a homemaker and loved sewing, quilting, crafts and most of all her flowers.

Funeral services were held at the Morris Funeral Home August 2 with the Rev. Bradley Tinney officiating. Burial followed in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.

Martina Neely

Martina Winemiller Neely, 65, a longtime resident of Jane Lew, died Saturday, July 31, 2004 at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, following a one-month illness.

She was born February 1, 1939, in Kent, Ohio, a daughter of the late Lester A. and Elizabeth V. Winemiller.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Lester Winemiller and Fred Winemiller.

Survivors include two daughters, Annamaria Neely of Lumberport and Susan Desjardines of Sarasota, Fla.; one son, Walter Neely III of Jane Lew; and six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Ms. Neely has a long list of accomplishments including attendance at WVU, graduating Summa Cum Laude, and W.Va. Wesleyan, graduating Magna Cum Laude, where she earned a Master's degree in child development, art therapy, math and psychology. She went on to make a career as an accomplished child counselor and handwriting analysis expert.

She was also an accomplished author, having written cookbooks for the International Chili Society, the Italian Heritage Festival and the Greenbrier Resort. She even managed to master professional photography and win awards for not only her pictures, but for her paintings as well.

A private service will be held following cremation.

William Riffle

William Henry Riffle, 68, of Raccoon Run Road, Weston, died at 5:17 a.m. Monday, July 26, 2004 in Charleston Area Medical Center following an extended illness.

He was born in Lewis County May 30, 1936, a son of the late Jim Riffle and Mary (Paul) Riffle. On July 23, 1983, he married Pamela Sue (Wilfong) Riffle.

He is survived by one son, William Lee Riffle and wife, Cindy, of Sutton; one daughter, Joyce McCourthill and husband, Andy, of Weston; one step-son, Russell Lee Wilfong of Weston; seven grandchildren; one brother, John Riffle; and one sister, Ann Marks and husband, Jack, of Weston.

He was preceded in death by one brother, James F. Riffle.

Mr. Riffle was a retired glass blower with W.Va. Specialty Co. of Weston and also worked on small engines with Gum Construction Company. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Funeral services were held Friday, July 31 from the Floyd Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Russell Furr officiating. Interment followed in the Peterson cemetery, Weston.
