John W. Long
John W. Long, age 83, formerly of Benedum Run Road, Bridgeport, passed away Sunday evening, January 15, 2006, at the residence of his daughter near Jane Lew, WV.
John had been ill since May of 2003 and his family took care of him until his death.
He was born the fifth out of six children on March 31, 1922 in Clarksburg, WV, a son of the late William Ford Long and the late Cora Belle Epler Long.
In 1947, he married his former wife, Charlotte Turner Long, who survives him in Clarksburg. They had three children Gwendolyn Kohut and her husband Bill of Morgantown, Vallerie Snow of Jane Lew and William Paul Long of Colfax. He was blessed with six grandchildren including Jeff and Brian Kesling, Jonathan Snow, Mallory, Nathan and Spencer Long; and four great-grandchildren Carrie Falls, Chase Sampson, and Johnny Raye and Olivia Kesling. He is also survived by one sister, Ruby Smith and her husband Wendell of Columbus, OH.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four siblings.
John graduated from Roosevelt-Wilson High School, Class of 1939 where he played football and attended Fairmont State University. He attended the Hammond Methodist Church until the 1960s and then transferred to the Bridgeport United Methodist Church where he remained a loyal, faithful and very supportive member until his death.
For more than 30 years, John was employed as an agent for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. After he retired from Metropolitan, he worked for Hunter Bennett of Weston for 16 years. He was also employed by the National Carbon before he enlisted in the military. He was a proud veteran of World War II, having enlisted in the Army Air Force from 1942-1946 and was stationed in Europe. For his service, he attained the rank of Corporal and received the Good Conduct Medal, the American Theatre Ribbon, the European African Middle Eastern Ribbon and the World War II Victory Ribbon.
He enjoyed building projects and working on his farm. He loved talking about the time he spent in the military. He also liked playing outdoor games.
Friends will be received at Burnside Funeral Home 607 S. Virginia Ave. on Thursday evening, January 19, 2006, from 5-8 p.m. On Friday afternoon, Mr. Long will lie in state from noon-1 p.m. at the Bridgeport United Methodist Church 251 Worthington Drive, Bridgeport. The funeral service will begin at 1 p.m. Friday at the church with Reverend Steven E. Dorsey presiding. Interment will follow in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Quiet Dell, where full military honors will be accorded by Clarksburg V.F.W. Post 573, Salem V.F.W. Post 9151 and members of the honor guard unit from Camp Dawson, Kingwood, WV.
A service of Burnside Funeral Home, Bridgeport.

Toney A. Marks
Toney A. Marks, 89, of 224 Dutchman Lane, Weston, died Wednesday, January 18, 2006, at his residence following an extended illness.
He was born April 26, 1916, in Gilmer County, a son of the late John W. and Nellie Josephine Burkhammer Marks.
He is survived by two sons, Thomas Marks of Severn, MD, and Bob Marks of Weston; three sisters, Stachie Messenger of Smithville, OH, Ethel McDonald of Reno, NV, and Barbara Greathouse of Orville, OH; one brother, Steven Marks of Wooster, OH; five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Myrtle LaVaughn Turner Marks on January 20, 1980, and by his second wife, Gladys Saffel Marks on July 6, 2004; three brothers, George Marks, Walker Marks and Elwood Marks and four sisters, Irene Messenger, Gloria Rowe, Peggy Kittle and Mary June Tumblin.
Toney retired from Danser Hardware and Supply Company with 33 years of service. He was a World War II Army veteran and a member of the Valley Chapel Baptist Church.
Friends were received at the Floyd Funeral Home on Friday, January 20. Funeral services were held Saturday from the Floyd Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Brad Tinney officiating. Interment followed in the Weston Masonic cemetery.

Doris Jean Roth
Doris Jean Roth, 72, of 96 Valley Chapel Road, Weston, died at 4:00 a.m. on Monday, January 23, 2006, in Monogalia General Hospital in Morgantown following an extended illness.
She was born in Randolph County on October 6, 1933; daughter of the late Calvin Francis Paugh and Rachel Whisner Paugh of Jane Lew.
On March 23, 1953, she married Charles Jacob Roth, who preceded her in death on October 9, 2005.
Mrs. Roth is survived by on daughter and son-in-law, Deborah Jean Rogers and husband Bill of Vadis; and four sons and on daughter-in-law, Charles Michael Roth of Hurricane, David Lee Roth and wife Susanna of Jacksonville, FL, Johnny Wayne Roth of Weston, and Kenneth Edward Roth of Valley Chapel. She is also survived by three sisters, Mona Mackey of Buckhannon, Patty Paugh of Nitro, and Joyce Paugh of Chicago, IL; and five brothers, Calvin Paugh of Elkins, Ronnie Paugh of Goldsboro, NC, Ricky Paugh of Anmoore, James Paugh of Buckhannon and Paul Paugh of Mt. Clare. Mrs. Roth is also survived by several grandchildren, great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Loman, Kenny and Richard Paugh, and one sister Lorraine Slaughter.
Mrs. Roth retired from Alkahn Silk Label Factory of Weston with 15 years of service. She was a member of the Valley Chapel United Methodist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher and a member of the choir. She was also active in other church and community activities.
Friends will be received at the Hardman-Paletti Funeral Home of Weston on Wednesday, January 25 from 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 1 p.m. from the Hardman-Paletti Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Russell Furr officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens of Weston.

Cathy Jo Vanscoy
Cathy Jo Vanscoy, age 36, of 130 Washington Avenue, Clarksburg, WV, passed away at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 17, 2006, at the SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation Center in Salem, WV, following an extended illness, and is now with her Lord in heaven.
She was born in Clarksburg, WV, August 13, 1969, a daughter of Philip A. “Bud” Vanscoy of Good Hope and the late Roxie C. Lockhart Vanscoy.
Surviving in addition to her father are two sisters and a brother-in-law, Donna and Scott Lane, West Milford, WV, and Tammy Blake, Weston, WV; five nephews, two great-nephews and a great-niece.
Cathy Jo was a graduate of South Harrison High School, Class of 1987. She was Baptist by faith. Challenged in many ways, she was always a happy person and will be missed by her family and friends.
Friends were received at the Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, 329 East Main Street, Clarksburg, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Friday, where a funeral service was held on Saturday, January 21, 2006, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Junior B. Harris presiding. Interment followed in Good Hope Masonic cemetery.

Mary Gertrude White
Mary Gertrude Smith White, 96, a resident of Nella's Nursing Home, Elkins, since 1995, died at 7:36 p.m. on Monday, January 23, 2006, following an extended illness.
She was born July 11, 1909, in Lewis County, a daughter of the late Charles Ables and Lara Jane Davisson.
She was twice married, first to Raymond Smith who preceded her death, then in April 1999 she married Bruce White while both were residents of Nella's Nursing Home, who died in December 1999.
Surviving are two nephews, John Baker of Frederick, MD, and Leonard Baker of Binghamton, NY; two nieces, Patricia Ott of Rocky Ridge, MD, and Jane Eyler of Baltimore, MD, and guardian Jack Blake of Thurmont, MD.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family being preceded in death by two sisters, Irene Ables and Ester Baker, and two brothers, Ted Ables and Delbert Davisson.
Mrs. White was a member of the Clark Chapel United Methodist Church and was a very religious lady.
A private burial was held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, January 24, in the Miller cemetery with Reverend Jeff Zickefoose officiating. A service of Floyd Funeral Home of Weston.

Gilbert Franz Butcher
Gilbert Franz Butcher Jr., 64, of 306 Southern Avenue, Stonewood, WV, passed away Saturday afternoon, January 21, 2006, just before 3 p.m.
He was born at No. 17, PK Lane in the Summit Park section of Clarksburg, on September 15, 1941, to Virginia W. Morrison, who died in 1992, and Gilbert F. Butcher Sr., who died in 1980.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy (Dotty) Mays Butcher, whom he married December 31, 1972; one son, G.F. “Gil” Butcher III of Jane Lew; and one grandson, G.F. “Frank-ie” Butcher IV. He is also survived by two sisters, Elizabeth “Libby” Iaquinta of Whitehall and Mary (Nathan) Rymer of Salem; three brothers, Joe (Betty) Bartlett of Summit Park, Clarksburg, C.W. “Bill” (Connie) Butcher and R.A. “Ric” (Vicky) Butcher of Lawrenceville, GA; and one sister-in-law, Linda Bartlett of Chatsworth, GA. Several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews also survive.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Howard and Jim Bartlett, and one brother-in-law, Pat Iaquinta, of Georgia.
Mr. Butcher was known by several nicknames, “Butch,” “Butchie” or “Junior” to family and friends; “Gilbert” to co-workers at Kroger on Pike Street and “Sonny” to those who rode the city bus from Stonewood to the west end of Clarksburg with him.
Mr. Butcher began working in local body shops at the age of sixteen. He worked in the body shop at Harry Green Chevrolet from about 1966 to 1971. He also worked at Rose’s Furniture and Bauer Lumber in Glen Elk and was a carpenter’s helper with Louie Mazza before going to work at Coca Cola about 1975. He remained at Coke until the local plant quit bottling pop about 1986. He went to work for Kroger in December of 1990 and was there until he retired in 2004.
Family and friends were received at Davis Funeral Home, Olen Thomas Drive, Rt. 98 Clarksburg, Nutter Fort, Monday, January 23 from 6-8 p.m. and Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. Pastor Larry Green of Stealey Assembly of God conducted the funeral beginning at noon on Wednesday, January 25, 2006, at the Davis Funeral Home. Interment followed in Floral Hills Memorial Garden, Quiet Dell.

Wanda Lee Shanks Lundell Chalfant
Wanda Lee Shanks Lundell Chalfant, 82, of Shinnston, died at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, January 22, 2006, at the home of her daughter following an extended illness.
Mrs. Chalfant was born February 1, 1923, in Jeannette, PA, a daughter of the late Vincent and Alice Shanks Lundell.
On October 26, 1945, she married Raymond H. Chalfant, who died on October 23, 1978.
Mrs. Chalfant is survived by 1 son, James Chalfant, and his wife, Diana, of Bridgeport; two daughters, Lee Anita Scott, and her husband, Dana, of Shinnston, Terry Gregory and her husband, Neil, of Shinnston; 5 grandchildren, Missy Allen, and her husband, Perry, of Jane Lew, Jed Chalfant and his wife, April, of Busby, MT, Tim Holt and his fianc/, Michelle Tomasi, of Fairmont, Jennifer Marra and her husband, Chris, of Fairmont, Lori Walls and her husband, J.R., of Enterprise; 1 stepgrandchild, Doug Whyte Jr. and his wife, Bridget, of Flemington; 5 great-grandchildren, Bailey and Miah Chalfant of Busby, MT, Brittny and Cassie Allen of Jane Lew and Ethan Marra of Fairmont; 1 stepgreat-grandchild, Seneca Whyte of Flemington; special friends, Pastor Ann DeBolt, Dorothy Stalnaker and Joe and Mary Spadafore.
Mrs. Chalfant loved to attend church services. She was a member of the Coon’s Run Baptist Church and later the Praise Center Church of Meadowbrook.
Friends were received at the Harmer Funeral Home, 300 Pike St., Shinnston, from 3-9 p.m. on Tuesday, January 24. A funeral service was held at the funeral home on Wednesday, January 25, 2006, at 1 p.m. with Pastor Ann DeBolt officiating. Interment followed at the Shinnston Masonic cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the People’s Hospice at P.O. Box 1680 Clarksburg, WV 26302-9960.

Philip Ivan Gum
Philip Ivan Gum, 48, of 3847 Churchville Road, Camden, died Thursday, January 26, 2006 at his home at 6 a.m.
He was born October 21, 1957, at Weston, a son of the Robert Lee and Garnet Regina McCluster Gum of Churchville Road, Camden.
He is survived by his parents and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Philip Ivan Gum loved blue grass music and appreciated the people who come to visit him and everything they did for him. He also loved nature.
Friends were received at the Morris Funeral Home, Jane Lew, on Sunday afternoon, January 29, from 1 to 2 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. with Rev. Clyde Gidley officiating. Burial followed in the Snyder cemetery at Churchville.

Marie Maulsby
Marie Maulsby died, Friday, January 27, 2006, at Beaver County Medical Center. She was 80 years old.
Marie was born on September 22, 1925 in Burnsville, West Virginia to Dewey B. and Edna Wiant McPherson. She and her family moved to Hopewell Township in 1953, where she resided until her death.
She is preceded in death by her husband Harold C. (Johnny) Maulsby, who died thirty years ago this month. In addition to her husband, her brothers William and Wendell McPherson and her sister Lucille Butcher also preceded her in death.
Marie had many personal and professional interests and leaves a legacy of service, love, and care for others. During WW II she worked in Washington, DC for the FBI. When she and Johnny moved to Hopewell, she continued to be enthusiastically involved in her family's activities, and became a dynamic member of her community.
She related and cared for many, and always had time to listen to others. Those who knew her are full of stories reflecting her supportive hand for neighbors and friends. She was a guiding influence to neighborhood teenagers, a patient and energetic Den Mother to her son's Cub Scout troop, and a devoted little league Mom. There was always activity at her home. Also, Marie was a gifted seamstress and several brides in the Beaver Valley area looked beautiful in her original creations.
Marie was a devoted member of the First United Methodist Church of Aliquippa and enjoyed 40 years of worship and service in a community full of friends and neighbors. Further to her commitment, she was a member of United Methodist Women, and the Order of the Eastern Starsí Woodlawn Chapter 164.
In addition to being a loving and proud grandmother, "Meme", as her grandchildren affectionately called her, enjoyed countless hours of laughter and camaraderie with her dear friends traveling, playing sports, and cards. She was an active member of Crescent Senior Citizens, Nifty Fifties, two card clubs, and the Grand Motherís Bowling League.
Marie was committed to serving God, her family, and community through a lifetime of good works, both large and small. She was a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, neighbor, and a very good friend to many. She will be missed dearly.
She is survived by her brother Dewey McPherson of Morgantown, WV, and three children Nick, Bill, and Marsha. Four grandsons, Scott, Christian, Maunee, and Evan, and four granddaughters, Jennifer, Amy, Sarah, and Whitney also survive Marie. Marie also has three great grandchildren: Carter (3), the son of Amy and her husband Jason, their daughter, Sarah (3 months), and Aidan (22 months), the son of Christian and his wife Stacey.
A service to remember and honor Marie was held on Monday, January 30, 2006 at 11:00 A.M., preceded by a viewing from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M, at First United Methodist Church of Aliquippa, located at 2816 Brodhead Road in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania 15001. In addition, a viewing was held at Darroch Memorial Chapel on Sunday, January 29, 2006 between 2-4 P.M. and 6-8 P.M. located at 2640 Mill Street, Aliquippa, Pennsylvania 15001. www.darrochfuneralhome.com

Donald L. McClung
Donald L. McClung, 72, of Alliance, passed away at the home of his stepdaughter at 5:58 p.m. Wednesday, January 18, 2006, after an extended fight with lung cancer.
He was born in Kencheloe, on Aug. 20, 1933, to Hunter and Reva (Batton) McClung.
He moved to Ohio during his teen years and had resided in the Alliance area since 1949.
He was a member of the United States Army Reserve from 1951 to 1954. Mr. McClung worked for Western Southern Insurance Company until he retired in 1989. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family.
He wsa a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church.
He is survived by his loving wife, Helen (Valero) McClung; his sons, Mark (Sandy) McClung and Barry (Pam) McClung; his daughter, Lisa (Chuck) Noble; his step-daughter, Michele (Jeff) Helaney; the loves of his life, his grandchildren, Paige Helaney, Jarron (Ashley) Noble, Megan Noble, Morgan Noble; his brothers, Rube McClung and David McClung; and his sisters, Ruth "Evelyn" Mesaros, Freda (Frank) Fegan and Naomi (Ron) Fraraccio.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Donald McClung was held on Jan. 21 at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home with Pastor Frank Gross officiating.

Cleo McKinney
Cleo Hammer McKinney, 88, of Colonial Place Retirement Home of Elkins, died on Sunday, January 29, 2006, at the retirement home following an extended illness.
She was born in Weston on April 9, 1917, daughter of the late William H. Moss and Sarah (Brady) Moss.
Cleo was first married in 1934 to Glenn W. Hammer, who preceded her in death in July of 1980. She then married W.D. McKinney in 1988, who also preceded her in death in August of 2000.
Mrs. Cleo Hammer McKinney is survived by one daughter, Glenda Hyre and husband John of Weston, and one son Glenn W. Hammer and wife Patricia of Dublin, Ohio. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Todd Hammer, Dr. Chance Hammer, Kerri Kiser and husband Steve, Susan Moody and husband Dan, and Brad Hyre, 13 great granchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Cleo Hammer McKinney was preceded in death by one sister, Carrie Radcliff.
Mrs. Cleo Hammer McKinney was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Matthew United Methodist Church of Weston, Chapter #40 Order of the Easter Star of Weston, and a lifetime member of the Theresa Snaith Auxillary of Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital of Weston.
Friends will be received at the Hardman-Paletti Funeral Home of Weston on Wednesday, February 1, from 4-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. from St. Matthew United Methodist Church of Weston with Reverend Basil Hensley and Reverend Rupert Evans officiating. Mrs. McKinney will lie in state from 10 until 11 a.m., the funeral hour. Interment will follow in the Machpelah cemetery of Weston.
