John Anthony Burr
John Anthony Burr, 60, of 13 Shawnee Dr., Buckhannon, died Monday, September 17, 2007, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.
He was born December 30, 1946, in Weston; son of the late Claude W. and Jenny Stalnaker Burr.
He is survived by two sons, John Greg Burr and wife Amanda of Cottage Grove, Ore., and Douglas Scott Burr and wife Eileen of Huntington Beach, Calif.; granddaughters, Isabella Burr and Lia Burr, both of Huntington Beach, Calif.; sister, Tammy Cross of Sistersville; and companion, Wanda Donahue of Buckhannon.
Mr. Burr was employed in auto sales and was a member of the Weston Lions Club.
Friends will be received at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home of Buckhannon on Friday, September 21, from 5 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. from the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. Interment will follow at the Horner cemetery, Horner.

Darley G. Mealey
Darley G. Mealey, age 73, of French Creek, died Wednesday, September 12, 2007.
He was born October 2, 1933, in Lewis County, a son of the late Ray and Vada Casto Mealey.
He was united in marriage March 15, 1958, to Retha Ann Crawford Mealey, who survives.
He is also survived by sisters, Eva and husband Elmer Chidester of Rock Cave, Rhoda and husband Leo Holloway of Flint, Michigan, Susie and husband Joe Woodcock of St. Johns, Missouri, Carol and husband Jim Lee of French Creek, Joann and husband John Whetsell of Culpepper, Virginia, Floda Voit of Largo, Florid,; special sister, Marie Woodyard of Buckhannon, whom he and Retha Ann raised; and brothers, Denver and wife Kathleen Mealey of Amherst, Ohio, Junior and wife Gerry Mealey of Crawford, Charles Mealey of Buckhannon. He is survived by a special niece and her family, Dawn and husband Jerry Arnold and children, Shayla and Dakota. Also survived by several other nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews; and special friends, Mike and Lisa Carpenter.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Dallas, Rubert and Jimmie Mealey; and one sister, Gertrude Kincaid.
Darley was a veteran, having served for two years as a military policeman. He was a member of the Sheriff’s Association. He served for 28 years with the City of Buckhannon and the Sheriff’s Department, from which he retired.
He was an avid farmer and enjoyed spending time at the General Store, where you would usually see him with a scratch off lottery ticket. He was a member of the Straight Fork UM Church and the Straight Fork CEOS.
The family will receive friends at the Heavner and Cutright Funeral Chapel on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 20, at 1:00 p.m. at the Straight Fork UM Church with Rev. Dan Lowther and Pastor David Jessie officiating. Interment will follow in the Chestnut Flat cemetery.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Straight Fork UM Church in care of Norma Lou Law at 235 Straight Fork Road, Crawford, WV 26343, in memory of Darley.

Mary Margaret Paugh
Mary Margaret Paugh, 83, of 158 Homewood Hill Road, Weston, passed away on Saturday, September 15, 2007, at 9 a.m. at Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital of Weston following an extended illness.
She was born in Lewis County on April 27, 1924; daughter of the late Harry P. Nichols and Clara (Dennis) Nichols.
On June 20, 1981, she was married to Thomas Francis Paugh, who preceded her in death on August 16, 2005.
Mary is survived by two nephews, Ronald K. Atkinson and Everett Atkinson, both of Weston; two nieces, Phyllis Pringle of Weston and Nancy Fisher of Orlando; and two great-nieces, Samantha Mayo of Orlando and Crystal Marple of Philippi.
Mrs. Paugh was a homemaker.
Friends will be received at the Hardman-Paletti Funeral Home of Weston on Friday, September 21, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 1 p.m. from the Hardman-Paletti Funeral Home chapel with Reverend Russell Furr officiating. Interment will follow in the Friendship I.O.O.F. cemetery of Berlin.

Timothy G. Smith
Timothy G. Smith, 52, of Maude Street, Clarksburg, passed away on Tuesday, September 11, 2007, in the United Hospital Center following an extended illness.
Mr. Smith was born in Buckhannon on December 5, 1954, a son of Dennis and Eva Lee Bennett Smith, who survive in Weston.
In addition to his parents, he is also survived by his wife, Cathy Smith; one sister, Polly Courtney, Clarksburg; two nieces, Manda Keller, Martinsburg, and Boo Keller, Norfolk, Virginia, and her son, Cole Keller.
Private family services will be conducted.
Davis Funeral Home handled arrangements for the family of Timothy Smith.

Col. Jonathan S. Van Horn
Colonel Jonathan S. Van Horn, US Army, enjoyed almost 30 years in Military Service to his country during times of peace and during times of war. He died at his home in Riverside, California, on September 10, 2007.
Colonel Van Horn was born in Cedarville on February 14, 1933.
He graduated from Weston High School in 1951, where he was active in three sports; football, basketball, and baseball. His major in high school was college preparatory courses in business programs. During his junior year in high school, he was selected to the 2nd All State Football Team. At the end of his senior football season, he had the dubious honor of being selected to the 1st All State Football Team. He was a good basketball guard, and he was an excellent baseball catcher.
In August 1951, Shocky played in the Annual North—South Football Game in Charleston. For his outstanding play on both offense and defense, he won the coveted North—South Football Scholarship Award that provided him with a four-year scholarship to West Virginia University at Morgantown.
On December 28, 1952, Shocky married a young lady from Wooster, Ohio, Carolyn Sue Stewart, who would have a profound influence on the rest of his Christian life. He graduated from WVU in 1955 with a degree in physical education and biological science.
At the end of his 10th year in the military service, Colonel Van Horn was detailed on military orders to attend a civilian university to get his master’s degree. On August 6, 1965, he was awarded a Master of Educational Psychology from the University of Oklahoma, Norman, Okla.
During Shocky’s four years at West Virginia University he participated in the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) and at graduation, he received a Regular Army Commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Military Police Corps with a two year detail to the infantry. He was sworn into military dervice on July 18, 1955, in Charleston, and served on continuous active duty until October 30, 1982 - 28 years and four months.
After serving two years as an Infantry Platoon Leader with the 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Benning, Ga., (1955-1957), he was assigned to U.S. Armed Forces in Germany for three years as a Platoon Leader with the 193rd Military Police Company. On his return to the United States in 1960, he was assigned to the United States Disciplinary Barracks, Fort Leavenworth, Kan. Other noteworthy stateside assignments include: An Infantry Platoon Leader, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Benning, Ga.; several United States Army Military Police School Staff and Faculty assignments, Fort Gordon, Ga.; The Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy, Washington, D.C.; The Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kan.; The United States Army War College, Carlisle Barracks, Carlisle, Pa.; The University of Oklahoma for a Masters Degree in Educational Psychology, Norman, Okla.; Joint Staff Assignment, Chief of Staff's Office, Department of the Army, Washington, D.C.; Joint Staff Assignment, Director, Defense Industrial Security Clearance Office, Columbus, Ohio. Colonel Van Horn’s major overseas assignments were in Germany, Korea, and Vietnam.
When asked “what were your” most rewarding assignments during your military service, he always replied his first and his last command assignments: 2nd Lieutenant Platoon Leader in Infantry, 1955 - 57, Fort Benning, Ga.; and as a Colonel, Commander First Region, Criminal Investigation Command, 1975 -- 76, Fort Meade, Md.
Colonel Jonathan S. Van Horn’s Awards and Decorations include: the Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster; the Bronze Star Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster; the Meritorious Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster; the Air Medal; the Army Commendation Medal with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters; the National Defense Medal; the Republic of Vietnam Service Medal with 3 Bronze Stars; and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 Device.
After retiring from the U.S. Army in 1982, Colonel Van Horn was hired as the Director of Security for Northrop Aircraft Division, Los Angeles, Calif. He retired from Northrop in 1992, and he and his wife moved to Las Vegas, Nev., for a second retirement. In November 2003 they moved to Air Force Village West in Riverside, Calif.
Colonel Van Horn was 1st a Christian from teenage until death; 2nd a devoted husband and father; and 3rd proud of his service in defense of his country in the United States Army.
His life followed three principles:
Christ is our foremost leader guiding our journey into His “Fathers House.”
His inexhaustible love and devotion for his family.
The Constitution of the United States creates all persons to be equal and laws are applied to each of them unbiased.
Colonel Van Horn is survived by his wife, Carolyn Sue, who resides in Air Force Village West, Riverside, Calif.; His oldest son Jonathan S. Jr. (wife Joanne and children Keith and Kimberly) who reside in Woodbury, Minn.; twin sons, Robyn S. (wife Patricia and children Aaron and Austin) who reside in Lakewood, Calif. and Rory S. (wife Valora and children David and Alex) who also reside in Lakewood, Calif.
He has one surviving brother, Francis N. Van Horn Jr. living in Wildwood, Fla.; and two surviving sisters, an older sister, Martha (Van Horn) Hawkins, living in Weston, and a younger sister, Frederica (Van Horn) Ours, living in DeLand, Fla.

Flava Reed Wyant
Flava Reed Wyant, 88, formerly of 130 Philadelphia Avenue, Bridgeport, died at 3:18 a.m. Wednesday, September 12, 2007, at United Hospital Center, Clarksburg, after a brief illness.
She was born October 8, 1918, in Lewis County, a daughter of the late James F. and Lela Maude Bailey Reed.
She was preceded in death on June 2, 1974, by her husband Paul Daris Wyant, whom she married April 18, 1938; two sons, Gerald Paul Wyant and Raymond Doy Wyant; three brothers, Clifton, Eugene and Kenneth Reed; three sisters, Lennie Reed, Ocie Balala and Lila Hart.
She was a homemaker who enjoyed gardening and loved to sew. She was a member of the Evangelical Congregational Church, Clarksburg.
Flava was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who will be sadly missed by her family. She will also be missed by friends at Meadowview Manor in Bridgeport, where she had resided for the last few months.
She is survived by daughter, Evelyn Frazier and husband Francis of Bridgeport; sons, Denver Wyant of Girard, Ohio, and Donald Wyant an d wife Susie of Copen; half-brother, Franklin Reed of Cleveland, Ga.; 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends were received from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, September 14, at Boyle Funeral Home of Weston. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Boyle Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Dennis Swindle and Reverend David Wyant officiating. Interment followed in McCanns Run cemetery, Weston.

Mary Jane Ables
Mary Jane Ables, 62, formerly of the Vandalia community, died Friday, September 21, 2007, at Holbrook Nursing Home of Buckhannon, following an extended illness.
She was born May 27, 1945, in Braxton County, a daughter of Mary Alice Curtis of Roanoke.
She is survived by her stepfather, Frankie Curtis of Roanoke; three brothers and spouse, Robert Ables of Roanoke, George Ables of Weston, Donnie and Vinnie Ables of Buckhannon; two stepbrothers and spouses, James and Irene Ables of Walkersville and Jerry and Jean Ables of Ashland, Ohio; two sisters and spouses, Betty and Eddie Thomas of Copley and Cathy and Denver Claypoole of Weston; two stepsisters, Vernie Riffle of Jane Lew and Iva Curtis of Copley; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Connie Perkins.
Mary Jane was a member of the Vandalia United Methodist Church and the Vandalia CEOS. She enjoyed spending time with and caring for the elderly, making crafts and baking.
She was a true friend to all.
Friends were received at the Boyle Funeral Home of Weston on Saturday, September 22, from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Boyle Funeral Home Chapel with Jay Burkhart officiating. Interment followed in the Jacksonville cemetery.

Wanda C. Allen
Wanda C. Allen, 67, of Normantown, passed away September 22, 2007, at WVU Medical Center, Morgantown.
She was born May 6, 1940, and was a daughter of Carl Dewayne and Lillie Pearl Frymier. Wanda was a member of the Rosedale Baptist Church since 1960, was a homemaker and was a former employee of Kenny Shoe Company and Panther Primitives.
Surviving are her husband, Eugene Allen, whom she married January 16, 1960; a son, Shawn Eugene Allen of Fredericksburg, Va.; four grandchildren, Matthew Shawn, Magan Joy, Sarah Elizabeth and Rachel Marie Allen, all of Fredericksburg, Va.; brothers, Charles A. Frymier and Everette W. Frymier of Cleveland, Denzil Lee Frymier of Vernon Hills, Ill.; and a sister, Freda J. Palmer of Parma, Ohio.
She was preceded in death by brothers, Stanley and Burley Frymier; and a sister, Bernice Frymier.
Special people in her life are Dawn, Jeff, Greg and Clinton Miller.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Rosedale Baptist Church at Rosedale. Elder Gary Bowman and Elder Larry Fisher will officiate. Interment will be in the Rosedale Baptist Church cemetery. Friends were received at the Stump Funeral Home, Arnoldsburg, from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and will be received one hour prior to the funeral at the church.

Miriam L. Brannon
Miriam L. Lipscomb Brannon died September 15, 2007.
She was married to the late Edward A. Brannon Jr.
She is survived by her daughter, Lynne Yoe and husband Charles; son, Edward (Ned) Arnold Brannon III and wife Jane; and grandchildren, Jonathan, Adam and Jason Yoe and Emily and Kelsey Brannon.
A private burial in the Machpelah cemetery of Weston for the family will be held.
Arrangements were made by Sterling-Ashton-Schwab-Witzke Funeral Home of Catonsville, Inc.

Bradley W. Brown
Bradley W. “Brad” Brown, 41, of Liberty Addition community, Clarksburg died suddenly at 6:30 a.m. Monday, September 17, 2007, at his residence.
He was born at Clarksburg, November 13, 1965; a son of Mary Ann Pigott Brown of Gore and the late Vance Brown.
He is survived by his wife, Christy Palmer Brown, whom he married December 28, 1991.
In addition to his wife and mother, Brad is survived by his 14-year-old son, Dakota Wane Brown and his 10-year-old daughter, Cierra Nikole Brown, both at home; 5 brothers and sisters, Sharon Gray and her husband Bill, Wallace, Linda Clark and her husband Terry, Gore, Roger Brown and his wife Debra, Lost Creek, Ronald Brown and his wife Sue, Spelter, Steven Brown, Hepzibah; his brother-in-law, Jim Palmer, West Milford; his mother-in-law, Ilene “Squeek” Riffle, Clarksburg; his nieces and nephews, Brenda Gray, Michael Gray, Randy Clark, Carrie Mullenax, Mark Brown, Cheryl Brown, Ronald Alan Brown and several great-nieces and nephews; 2 special cousins, David Pigott and his wife Phyllis, Clarksburg, and Bill Carden, Wallace; his aunts and uncles, Mabel Haas and husband Glen, Ruth Simpson, Eugene Brown and his wife Nell, Robert Brown and his wife Helen and several other aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was also preceded in death by his father-in-law, Ray Palmer.
Brad was a 1985 graduate of Liberty High School and attended the United Technical Center at Gore. He was a former employee of the Bridgeport Shop and Save and was a current employee of Quality Machine in Bridgeport with 20 years service. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing poker.
He was a certified scuba diver, a NASCAR and Dallas Cowboy fan and enjoyed spending time with his children and family and his dog Sassy. Brad was known for telling jokes and could always be counted on to begin a conversation with “Have you heard the one about…”.
Friends were received at the Perine Funeral Home, Shinnston, from 12 to 9 p.m. Thursday, where funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Friday, September 21, with Pastor Jim Weisenberger officiating. Interment followed in the Shinnston Masonic cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the family at Rt. 6 Box 186, Clarksburg, WV 26301.
