Janice L. Chandler, 78, of Poca died on Easter Sunday, March 27, 2005.

She was a wife, mother and grandmother and a member of Rock Branch Independent Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fleary “Butch” Chandler, parents, Earl and Kate Hanson, and brother, Junior Hanson.

Surviving: children, Jerry Chandler and wife, Pat, of St. Albans, Nancee Gunter and husband, Doug, of Cross Lanes, Patti McClanahan and husband, Roger, of Fayetteville, and Dicky Chandler of Poca; sisters, Betty Moore, Evelyn Bostic and Linda Hunter; grandchildren, Rocky and Casey of St. Albans, Scott and Chasity of Nitro, Tisha of Hurricane, Todd and Chad of South Carolina, Brian of Cross Lanes, and Heather of Charleston; great-grandchildren, Hunter, Madison, Sara, Haley, Gretchen, Jarrett, Katie, Lyndsey, Jake, and Isabella.

Service was held Thursday, March 31, 2005, at Rock Branch Independent Church with Pastor Delbert Hawley officiating. Burial was in Haven of Rest memorial Gardens, Red House. Gatens-Harding Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of arrangements.

Betty Jane Thomas

Betty Jane Thomas, 78, of Nitro died March 27, 2005, in Thomas Memorial Hospital.

She was born October 3, 1926 in Poca.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Denver “Shorty” Thomas Sr.

She was a loving mother, grandmother and homemaker.

Surviving: children, James Thomas and wife, Brenda, of Hurricane, Joyce Dawson of Charlotte, North Carolina, Carol Caruthers and husband, Larry, of Nitro, Denver “Bozo” Thomas and wife, Janie, of St. Albans, Janet Stocks and husband, Bob, of Newport News, Virginia, Janette Eskew and husband, Lonnie, of St. Albans, and Joseph Thomas of Nitro; 16 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sisters, Mary Sue Erwin of Poca, Ann Milbee of Nitro, Deloris “Corky” York of Grantsville, and Edna Tucker of Eleanor; brothers, James and Joseph Milbee, both of Poca.

Service was held Thursday, March 31, 2005, at Gatens-Harding Funeral Home, Poca, with Pastor Delbert Hawley officiating. Entombment was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House.

Frank F. Davis

Frank F. Davis, 71, of Hurricane died Monday, March 28, 2005, in St. Mary's Medical Center after a short illness.

He was retired from Hughes Aircraft, Fullerton, California. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, a member of American Legion Post 139, Milton, Masonic Lodge 469, Yorba Linda, California, and Scottish Rite Bodies of Freemasonery, S.J. Valley, Long Beach, California.

Surviving: wife, Marian Hicks Davis; son, Fred Davis of Pasadena, California; daughter, Amy Davis of Fountain Valley, California; sisters and their husbands, Nelma and Ronald Dunnaway of Milton, Judy and Doug Foster of Culloden, Janet and Bob Spradling of Nashville, Tennessee, Vicki and John Richards of Sandy, Utah, and Sarah White -Cresap and husband, Dee, of Culloden; several nieces and nephews.

Service was held Thursday, March 31, 2005, at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, with the Rev. Jim McGehee officiating. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane.

K. Gene Beheler

Keneth Gene Beheler of Charleston, formerly of Eleanor, died Monday, March 28, 2005, at home.

He was a polio victim since childhood, which he never let stand in the way of anything he needed to accomplish.

Surviving: sister, Phyllis.

A private service will be held at a later date. Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, was in charge of arrangements.

Beulah M. Kerns

Beulah M. Kerns, 87, of Hurricane died Saturday, April 2, 2005, in Teays Valley Nursing and Rehab after a long illness.

She was a member of Forrest Burdette Memorial United Mehtodist Church for over 70 years.

Surviving: her husband of 66 years, John Kerns; daughter, Joyce Moss and husband, David, of Hurricane; sons, John Kerns II of Hurricane and Tom Kerns and wife, Marolyn, of Hudson, New York; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

Service was held Tuesday, April 5, 2005, at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, with Dr. Dan Hogan officiating. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane.

Robert J. Horton

Robert J. “Jack” Horton died April 1, 2005, at home.

He was retired from Monsatno. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Grady Horton, brothers, Paul, Bud, Kemp and Charlie, and sisters, Mary and Pauline.

Surviving: wife, Peggy; children, Jerry and wife, Cynthia, Rob and wife, Renee, Dabbie and husband, Greg, Carl and wife, Debbie, and Pat and wife, Sherry; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; many loving family members and friends.

A private service will be held at a later date. Gatens-Harding Funeral Home, Poca, is in charge of arrangements. The family requests memorial donations be made to the charity of your choice in memory of Jack.

Odessa Bias Messinger

Odessa Bias Messinger, 88, of Ona, W.Va., formerly of West Hamlin, went to live with the Lord Thursday, March 31, 2005. She was born to the late Lawrence E. and Dina Adkins Bias in Cabell County, West Virginia, on February 13, 1917, the third of their seven children. Odessa was educated in Cabell County schools, graduating as salutatorian of the Barboursville High School, Class of 1936. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education from Marshall College (University). In 1977, she retired from public education with 37-1/2 years of service in Cabell and Lincoln Counties. She was a member of Center Point Baptist Church and served as secretary of the Ladies Union for 40 years. Her husband, Arvin, preceded her in death in 1980. Survivors include: her daughter and son by marriage, Willoe and Wane Ashworth of Ona, her grandson Todd, his wife Stephanie, and their children Collin .and Breann of Milton; her step-grandson, Rod, his wife Cheryl, and their children, Rocky, Mollie and Jenna of Barboursville. Appreciation is expressed to Dr. David Ayers, his staff and to the Hospice team. Special thanks to Rosalee, Shirley, Carolyn, Linda, Debbie and Edie. Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements. Services were conducted by Pastor Pete Davidson, one of her former students, assisted by Rev. Larry Murphy. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton.

James LeRoy Hicks

James LeRoy Hicks, 69, of Barboursville passed away Monday, March 30, 2005, at St Mary's Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted 2 p.m. Sunday, April 3, 2005, at Huntington, Rev Ed Grant and Rev. Ralph Sager officiating. Interment in Ridgelawn Memorial Park, Huntington. He was born December 20,1935, in Wheeling, W.Va., son of the late Clare and Gladys Madge Nichols Hicks. He retired from the welding department of INCO and was a veteran of the United States Air Force. He is survived by his wife, Peggy Reed Hicks; one daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Bill Omonhundra of Mooresville, N.C.; one son, James Reed Hicks of Ona, W.Va.; and three grandchildren, Keri Hicks, Ethan Hicks and Claire Omonhundra. Henson Mortuary was in charge of arrangements. The family suggests contributions be made to the Steel Memorial United Methodist Church Building Fund.

Andrew Cheke

Andrew Cheke, 74, of Milton, WV, passed away Tuesday, March 29, 2005, at his residence. He was born May 14, 1930, in Pittsburgh, Pa., a son of the late Ignatius and Emily Simon Cheke. He was a veterans of the U.S. Army and was retired from the railroad. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Ignatius, William and James Cheke and one sister, Gazella Horn, all from Pennsylvania . He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Audrey Kosko Cheke; two daughters, Lori Lippai of West Mifflin, Pa., and Christine Perkins of Barboursville; four sons, Andrew of Shellsburg, Pa., Raymond of Winchester, Ky., John of St. Cloud, Fla., and Carl of Huntington; three sisters, Elizabeth Brozosky of West Mifflin, Pa., Margaret Perozich of North Huntington, Pa., and Alice Kurcell of Versailles, Pa.; two brothers, Charles of West Mifflin, Pa., and Alex of Knox, Pa.; and 11 grandchildren, Eric Cheke, Sarah, Luke and Alex Lippai, Josh and Amber Cheke, Heather, Harley and Heidi Perkins and Nicholas and Nicole Cheke. Memorial mass was conducted Saturday, April 2, 2005, at St. Stephens Catholic Church by Father Bert Valdes. Wallace Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements. Contributions may be made to St. Stephens Catholic Church or Hospice of Huntington.

Lenora Jean Harless

Lenora Jean Harless, 75, of Milton, WV, passed away March 23, 2005, at her daughter's home. Memorial services were held Saturday, April 2, 2005 in White Chapel Memorial Gardens Chapel, Barboursville, by Rev. William Plybon. She was a retired office manager for Teamsters Local 505, Huntington and past president of American Legion Post 139 Milton Ladies' Auxiliary. Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Bill Harless; daughter, Sharon Hopkins and husband Jack of Waterproof, La.; two sons, Billy Harless and wife Martha of Conway, Ark., and Robert Harless of Milton; and grandchildren Wes Hopkins and wife Erin and Catherine Harless.

Mary Rowley Hesson

Mary Rowley Hesson, lovingly known as “MeMe” passed away, Tuesday, March 29, 2005 at her residence. Mrs. Hesson was owner of Hesson Dance Studio for 70 years. She gave many years of volunteer services, offering dancing instruction to the underprivileged. The light of her life was her family, special friends and dance. Mrs. Hesson was born June 2, 1913, Rochester, Minnesota, a daughter of the late Dr. Walter N. and Vivian Fitch Rowley. Funeral services were held Saturday, April 2, 2005, at Henson Mortuary with burial following in Ridgelawn Memorial Park, Huntington. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband James L. Hesson and sister Jeanne Rowley Huggins. Survivor include daughter and son-in-law, Mary Hesson File and Peter File, D.O.; nieces Candy and her husband Roger Lewis, Pam Clary, granddaughter, Kathryn File; grand-nieces and nephews, Michele and Xiao-En Fang, Becky and Chuck Curry, Danny and Shawnee Lewis, Shawn Clary, Beth and Carrie Lewis; great-grandnieces and nephews - Carissa, Justin and Patrick Fang, Haley, Taylor and Chase Curry, Brenden Lewis; special friends, Judy and Lee Olson, Stacy Smith, Tracy Smith, Laura, Kyela, and Bryton Leadman. Henson Mortuary, Pea Ridge, was in charge of arrangements.

Gloria Lee Hill

Gloria Lee Hill, 77, of Huntington, WV, wife of David Hill, died Wednesday, March 30, 2005, in St. Mary's Medical Center. She was born Jan. 4, 1928, in Detroit, Mich., a daughter of the late Kenneth and Elizabeth Kyle Tibbenham. She was co-owner of David Hill Limited. Also surviving are three daughters, Gloria Catherine Limb of Belpre, Ohio, Michelle Diane Epperly of Barboursville and Jean Marie Chappell of Huntington; grandchildren, Jason Allen Limb, Sara Catherine Lowry, Jennifer Elizabeth Cote, Bryan William Limb, Taylor David Limb, George Allen Chappell Jr. and David Charles Chappell; and great-grandchild, Ender Cy Gregory Limb. Funeral services were held Saturday, April 2, 2005 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with the Rev. Msgr. Lawrence Luciana officiating; burial in St. Mary's Cemetery, Little Hocking, Ohio. Henson Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

James Warner Sovine

James Warner Sovine, 62, of Culloden, W.Va., died unexpectedly Wednesday, March 30, 2005, while vacationing with his family in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, April 2, 2005 at the Milton Baptist Church by Dr. T.J. Dubose. Burial in Valley View Memorial Park. Jim was born April 23, 1942, in Huntington, a son of the late Warner H. and Juanita Abbott Sovine. He was an independent businessman and was a member of Milton Baptist Church, a deacon and teacher of the Fellowship Class. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Sally Perry Sovine; two daughters, Krista Raines and husband Frank of Culloden, WV and Kyra Minichan and husband John of Barboursville; four grandchildren who he dearly loved, Morgan and Bryce Raines and Perry and Blake Minichan; and a special sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Kay and Mick Rowan. Donations may be made to Milton Baptist Church. Wallace Funeral Home, Milton was in charge of arrangements.

Irene Virginia Hobbs Lloyd

Irene Virginia Hobbs Lloyd, 84, of Barboursville, passed away Monday, March 28, 2005, at the home of her daughter. She was born December 30, 1920. in Logan, W.Va., a daughter of the late George and Elvera Jenelos. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William Lloyd, and a son, Carl Hobbs. She attended Eastern Gates Baptist Church. She is survived by her children, Roger and Thearline Hobbs of Kountze, Texas , Eugene and Linda Hobbs of La Porte, Texas , and Shirley and Daniel Sherk of Huntington; eight grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Frank Jenelos of Logan, W.Va., and Nicholas Vergis of Steubenville, Ohio; and three sisters, Marcelene Barcus of Dennison, Ohio, Mary Phillips and Beba Vergis, both of Las Vegas, Nevada. Funeral services were conducted Friday, April 1, 2005, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel. Burial in Salt Rock. She will be sadly missed by her friends and family

Mary M. “Margaret” Lycan

Mary M. “Margaret” Lycan, 82, of Lesage, W.Va., passed away Monday, March 28, 2005 at her residence. Funeral services were conducted Friday, April 1, 2005, at Beard Mortuary with the Rev. Randy Spurgeon officiating. Burial in Woodmere Memorial Park. She was born February 18, 1923, in Sprigg, W.Va., a daughter of the late John D. and Ramie Greek Anderson. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded by her husband, Earl Lycan; brothers, John Anderson and Joseph Anderson; sisters-in-law, Mary Ellen (Pete) Anderson and Sally Anderson. She worked as a school cook at Cox's Landing Elementary School from 1960 to 1985; she was active in the Cox's Landing Women's Club and a member of the Westmoreland Baptist Church. She is survived by her brothers, Charles Anderson of Huntington, W.Va., and Robert Anderson of Jacksonville, Fla.; three sons, Gary Lycan and wife, Phyllis of Greensboro, N.C., Frank Lycan of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Mark Lycan and wife, Shirley, of Lesage, W.Va.; grandchildren Christiana “Christy” Lycan of Cary, N.C., Veronica “Ronnie” Sue Lycan-Coggin and husband, Tom, of Greensboro, N.C., Kevin Lycan of Huntington, W.Va., Heather Pilcher and husband, Mark, of Huntington, W.Va., Melissa Haggai and husband, John, of Baltimore, Md.; great-grandchildren Joseph William Coggin, Benton James Coggin; newborn great-granddaughter Anderson Neeley Coggin, all of Greensboro, N.C., Hannah Pilcher, Summer Pilcher, and Hattie Grace Pilcher, all of Huntington, W.Va.

She is also survived by her longtime close friend and traveling companion Marilyn Floyd of Lesage, and her caregiver Lisa Black of Huntington. Donations may be made to Huntington City Mission, 624 10th Street, Huntington, WV, 25701. Beard Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

James Webster Swann

James Webster Swann, 75, of Henderson, Nevada, formerly of Barboursville, W.Va., died Saturday, March 26, 2005, at the National Adelson Hospice, Las Vegas, Nevada. Funeral services were conducted March 31, 2005, at Henson Mortuary, Huntington, West Virginia, the Rev. Roy Lee Lambert officiating. Interment in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville, West Virginia. He retired from Appalachian Electric Power Co. as an electrician. He was born August 17, 1929, at Barboursville, W.Va., son of the late Robert Ambrose Swann and Mary Inez Hatfield Swann. He is survived by his wife, Tazuka M. Swann; daughter Amy Margaret Wright of Las Vegas, Nevada; sons, James Richard Swann of Fayetteville, N.C., and John Michael Swann of Sod, W.Va.; three sisters, Freda Powell of Chillicothe, Ohio, Rosalie Hunsaker of Huntington, W.Va., and Patty Derby of Huntington, W.Va.; and six grandchildren. Barbara Chapman Moore

Barbara Chapman Moore, 58, of Ona, W.Va., passed away Saturday, March 26, 2005, at St. Mary's Medical Center. Services were held on Wednesday, March 30, 2005 at White Chapel Memorial Gardens with the Rev. David Ashworth officiating. She was born February 15, 1947, in Pontiac, Mich. She was a former sales clerk at Lazarus Department Store and legal representative for Sears Department Store. Barbara was loved by all who knew her, and she will be greatly missed; but her friends and family take comfort in knowing that she is finally with her beloved son Matthew who passed away in 1991. In addition to Matthew, she was preceded in death by an infant son, Donald Lee Chapman and her father, Cola Golden Adkins. She is survived by her husband, Kyle Dennis “Denny” Moore; her parents, Lee and Lottie Kauffman of Huntington; a daughter, Shelly Lynn Moore Cornell of Hurricane, W.Va.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald Mark and Carla Jo Chapman of Milton, W.Va., and Michael David and Stacey Chapman of Ona, W.Va.; four grandsons, Blake Alexander Cornell, Tanner Matthew Chapman, Conner Scott Chapman and Tyler Philip Chapman; a brother, David Lee Adkins of Huntington; she leaves behind a host of friends, including her special friends, Pam Preston, Vicki Riggs, Loys Hutchinson and Lana Connor and her precious companion “Taco.” Beard Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Clarence T. “George” Hinkle

Clarence T. “George” Hinkle, formerly of Milton, was received by Angels into Heaven Sunday, March 27, 2005, in St. Mary's Medical Center, Huntington. Funeral services were conducted Friday, April 1, 2005, at Newcomer-Farley Funeral Home, Columbus, Ohio, with the Rev. Harry Miller and the Rev. Ken Skaggs officiating. Burial in Northlawn Memory Gardens. He was born June 12, 1932, in Milton, W.Va., a son of the late Cecil and Agnes (Gibson) Hinkle. He also was preceded in death by three sisters, Ada Karr, Reba Young and Kathleen Duffer; and one brother, Howard Hubert Hinkle. Mr. Hinkle served his country in the Army Signal Corps and was employed by Cultural Resource Analysts, Inc., Hurricane, W.Va. He also retired from Timken Roller Bearing of Columbus, Ohio, after 24 years of service, was the founder and co-owner of MPC Studio of Columbus, Ohio, manager of bluegrass gospel singing group, “The Gospel Mountaineers,” founder and manager of “Whitten Ridge” singing group, a member of the International Llama Registry, Tri-State Llama Caregivers and W.Va. Archeological Society and a 32nd degree Mason. He became an ordained minister of the gospel in 1969. He is survived by his wife of 5O years, Maxine (Arthur) Hinkle of Columbus, Ohio; daughters, Linda (Ken) Skaggs of Plain City, Ohio and Debby (Joseph) Fodey of Gahanna, Ohio; grandchildren, Rachel “Raquel” Parks, John Pernell Jr., Joel (Erica) Skaggs, Scott Pernell and Jeremiah Fodey, great-grandchildren, Troy, Sabbath, McKayla, Autum and Lilyanne; sister, Florence (Arthur) Coleman of Milton; brothers, Glenn (Barbara) Hinkle of Centerburg, Ohio, Clay (Charlene) Hinkle of Murfreesboro, Tenn., and Lloyd (Peggy) Hinkle of Obetz, Ohio and a host of nieces nephews and special friends.

Atha O. Jeffries

Atha O. Jeffries, 96, of St. Albans, formerly of Poca, died May 16, 2005, at home. He was a retired coalminer and construction worker. He was preceded in death by his son, Gene Jeffries. Surviving: his wife of 53 years, Laura Jeffries; children, Regina Lynn Ancion of St. Albans, Rita S. Larch of South Charleston, Richard Jeffries of Poca, Robert Jeffries of Red House, and Terry Jeffries of Bancroft; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

Service was held Thursday, May 19, 2005, at Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House, with Pastor Ron Brewer officiating. Burial was in the memorial gardens. Gatens-Harding Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of arrangements.

Memorial donations may be made to Kanawha Hospice Care, 1143 Dunbar Avenue, Dunbar WV 25064.
