Alvin Junior McCartney
Alvin Junior McCartney, 68, of Broad Run Church Road. passed away on Monday, July 9, 2012 at home. He was born in Lewis Co. on May 22, 1943: son of the late Byron O. McCartney and Mildred Fay (Hawkins) McCartney.
Mr. McCartney is also survived by three sons: Larry McCartney of Missouri, Kevin McCartney and Maryury of California and Kenny McCartney and Carma of Horner; one daughter; Donna Smith and Steve of Jane Lew; ten grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by two brothers: Arnold and Elaine McCartney, Charles and Janie McCartney, three sisters: Carrie Bleigh, Nelma Bailey and Linda and Buddy Walker, and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. McCartney was a Journey lineman with 42 years of service, ending his career with Local 42. Alvin loved to fish, loved his children and family very much.
Family and friends will be received at the Hardman-Paletti Funeral Home 730 N. Main Avenue Weston on Wednesday, July 11, 2012 from 12 noon -2 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 2 p.m. from the Hardman-Paletti Funeral Home chapel with Pastor David Jessie officiating.
Interment will follow services in Kincaid cemetery of Wildcat. On-line condolences may be expressed at www.hardman-palettifuneralhome.com.

Dorothy Mae McVay Peterson
Dorothy Mae McVay Peterson, 105, formerly of Weston and Glenville, passed away Monday, July 9, 2012 at Serenity Care Home in Buckhannon following an extended illness. She was born June 9, 1907, in Bloomfield, Ohio; daughter of James Madison and Hulda Jane (Paton) McVay, and step-daughter of Lenna (Chapman) McVay, all who preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death were her husband, Herbert Upton Peterson, with whom she shared 58-years of her life, and her brother, Karl McVay.
Dorothy was a graduate of Spencer High School and Glenville Normal School. She spent many years teaching in Roane and Lewis Counties, and retired in 1969. Her hobbies included painting, traveling, cooking and she logged more than 1,250 books that she had read since 1940.
A member of St. Matthew United Methodist Church in Weston, she attributed her long life to living her faith in God and eating the right foods. During her residence in Weston, she was active and served in many activities of the church.
She is survived by one son, James Lowell and wife, Marilyn (Queen) Peterson of French Creek; two grandsons, David (Cynthia O'Nan) Peterson of Clemmons, N.C., and Phillip (Mary White) Peterson of Waynesburg, Pa.
Also surviving are eight grandchildren: Josh (Morgantown), Alex and Luke (both of Clemmons), Ashley (Brentwood, Pa., and Lacey Peterson (Waynesburg) and Lauren, Amanda and Bradley Hayes (all of Clemmons).
Friends and relatives will be received on Wednesday, July 11, at the Hardman-Paletti Funeral Home 730 North Main Avenue, Weston from 5 p.m., to 8 p.m.
Funeral Services will be held at the Hardman-Paletti Funeral Home Chapel on Thursday, July 12, at 11 a.m., with Reverend Jonathan Nettles of St. Matthew United Methodist Church, Pastor Nancy Killingsworth of French Creek United Methodist Church, and her nephew Pastor Stephen McVay of Princeton, Ky.
Burial will follow in the Peterson cemetery in Weston. On-line condolences may be expressed to the family at www.hardman-palettifuneralhome.com.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be given to Serenity Care Home, LLC (P.O. Box 2352, Buckhannon, WV 26201) in Dorothy's memory.

Sonja Ruth Sanders
Sonja Ruth Sanders, 60, of 1314 Casey Drive, Camden, passed away on Thursday, July 5, 2012, at Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital following a brief illness.
She was born on February 28, 1952, in Doddridge County: daughter of the late Mathew Clement Schulte, Sr., and Priscilla Ruth Schulte who survives.
In addition to her father she was preceded in death by two ex-husbands and one brother.
In addition to her mother she is survived by her children, Dawn L. Brown and husband Robert, Thomas Weese and wife Teresa, Matthew C. Spencer and Angel L. Spencer. Also surviving ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Sonja was Catholic and her true joy was spending time with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed crocheting and spending time on the computer on her facebook account.
Family were receive friends at the Hardman-Paletti Funeral Home 730 North Main Avenue, Weston on Monday, July 9, from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.

Michael Shane Simpson
Michael Shane Simpson, 53, of Reynoldsville, Ohio, formerly of Weston, passed away on Wednesday, July 4, 2012, in Mt. Carmel Hospital of Columbus, following a brief illness. He was born in Weston on August 28, 1958: son of the late Robert Roane Simpson and Priscilla Jane (White) Simpson of Weston.
Michael is survived by two brothers, Robert T. (Brenda) Simpson of Weston and Marshall (Stephanie) Simpson of Morgantown; three sisters, Kara L. (Steve) Rider of Hilliard, Ohio, Melissa (Paul) Falkenbach of Columbus, and Tina (Pat) Garska of Jane Lew.
He is also survived by nieces and nephews: Christopher, Joshua and Elizabeth Simpson, Sam Rider, Laura, Addyson and Abigail Aho, Sean Heater, Erin and Sarah Falkenbach and Mercedes, Malcolm and Madison Simpson.
Michael was a landscaper with GreenScapes for 13-years. He was a graduate of Lewis County High School in 1976 and graduated from Glenville State College in 1983 and 1984 with degrees in Sports Management and Business Administration.
Michael was active in sports from little league up to high school. At the high school level, he played football, baseball and ran track. He was also a member of DeMolay.
While at college Michael belonged to Lamba Chi fraternity. He was also part of the technical crew for musicals, was an RA, Cheerleader for 4-years and an illustrationist to the "Mercury."
Michael enjoyed outdoors, hunting, fishing, camping, skiing, diving and in later years he played softball. He was a proficient photographer.
At Michael's request, he will be cremated and his ashes will be scattered at his favorite spot in West Virginia. A Memorial Gathering will be held on Saturday, July 14, 2012, from 10 a.m., until 12 noon from the St. Matthew United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Michael S. Simpson Memorial Fund to benefit the Louis Bennett Public Library care of the Citizens Bank 47 Industrial Park Road, Jane Lew, WV 26378.

Garnet Lea Fisher
Garnet Lea Fisher, 92, of Jesse Run Road, Jane Lew, passed away July 27, 2012.
She was born May 8, 1920: daughter of the late Foster and Lovie Ellyson Holbert.
She was married Sept. 7, 1938, to William Edward "Bill" Fisher who passed away May 28, 2001.
Mrs. Fisher is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Daniel E. Fisher and wife Jeanne of Weston; one granddaughter and husband, Kris Lattea and husband Toby of Buckhannon; two great-grandchildren, Ryan and Emily Lattea of Buckhannon.
Mrs. Fisher was a member of the Freemans Creek Baptist Church. The family would like to thank Sherri Sellers for the loving and compassionate care given to Garnet over the last 4 an a half years.
At the request of the family, there will be no visitation and a private graveside service for the family will be held Monday morning, July 30, 2012 at 11 a.m., at the Broad Run cemetery with Rev. Robert Poling officiating. Morris Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements for Garnet Lea Fisher.

Brannon H. "Bud" Foster
Brannon H. "Bud" Foster, 89, of N. Main Avenue, Weston, passed away Monday, July 23, 2012 at his residence following an extended illness.
He was born in Lewis County on February 3, 1923: son of the late Homer G. and Ocie (Bennett) Foster.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years the former Lily Dale Smith.
Also surviving are six daughters, Sue Mowery, Sondra Granlund, Vicki Jordan, Carol Snyder, Penny (Jim) Rohrbough and Christine Gum all of Weston; one son, Gary Foster of Weston; ten grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. One brother survives Carl (Isabelle) Foster of Weston.
Mr. Foster was preceded in death by two son-in-laws, Gary Snyder and Ron Granlund, three brothers and two sisters.
Mr. Foster spent his working life in the glass houses of Lewis County before retiring with many years of service. He served his Country and was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Forces, 66th Airdrome squadron, where he was an airplane armorer and participated in the Normandy and European Air Offensives during World War II. He was a member of American Legion Post 4 of Weston. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, WVU athletics and was Methodist by faith.
Family and friends were received at the Hardman-Paletti Funeral Home 730 N. Main Ave., Weston, on Thursday, July 26, from 5-8 p.m. Funeral services were conducted on Friday, July 27, at 11 a.m., from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Ron Brown officiating.
Interment followed at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.
Full military honors will be conducted by the Lewis County Honor Guard and the United States Army.

Oletta E. Malone
Oletta E. Malone, 97, passed away July 19, 2012 at Health South in Morgantown. She was born Aug. 18, 1914 in Roanoke, Lewis County: daughter of the late Edgar and Rose Bennett Francis. Mrs. Malone was proceeded in death by her husbands, John E. Bruffey, Virgil Strader and George Malone; a brother, Marvin and sisters Virginia and Geraldine Bruffey.
Surviving are one son, John F. Bruffey of Weston; one grandson, Kenneth Bruffey; one granddaughter, Melony Hardman; two great-grandsons, Justin and Jeremy Hardman of Parkersburg.
Mrs. Malone was a graduate of Weston High School Class of 1933, and had worked for the Woolworth Store where she retired from in Sarasota Fla., in 1977. She had spent her winters in the south since 1986, 11 years in Texas and the last ones in Fla.
Mrs. Malone attended The Way of Holiness Church and The Stonecoal Methodist Church after returning to this area in 2001. She was a resident of Serenity Care Home in Buckhannon, from June 2009 till July 2012.
At her request, she will be cremated and there will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at the Morris Funeral Home Friday, Aug. 3, from 9:30 a.m., to 11 a.m. Funeral hour is 11 a.m., with Rev. Jerry Murrell officiating and burial will follow in the Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.

Bonnie Lue Moats
Bonnie Lue Moats, 62, of Weston, died Saturday, July 28, 2012 at Crestview Manor, Jane Lew, following an extended illness.
She was born December 24, 1949 in Braxton County: daughter of the late Everett Williams and Mabel Wimer Williams.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Richard Williams, Alvie Williams and two infant brothers.
She is survived by one daughter, Sherry Moats of Weston; one son, Scott Moats of Pruntytown; two sisters, Alma Cabarle of Mt. Holly, N.J. and Hazel Watson of Weston; one brother, Everett Williams of Elkins; her adopted sister, Brenda Smith of Weston and several special friends.
The family wishes to convey their thanks to Dan Moody.
Bonnie was Methodist by faith and a member of the Moose and Eagle Lodges of Weston.
She had previously worked several years at the Weston State Hospital as an Aide.
Cremation services provided by Boyle Funeral Home, Weston, WV.

Bertha Virginia Riley Smith
Bertha Virginia Riley Smith, age 85, of Buckhannon, died Saturday, July 28, 2012 at Davis Memorial Hospital in Elkins.
She was born July 24, 1927 in Bablin: daughter of the late Orval and Goldie Ethel Cooper Kincaid. She was preceded in death by her husband Howard J. Smith. Surviving are two sons, Larry Riley of Hodgesville, and Melvin Riley of Lutz, Fla.; three daughters, Wilma Daugherty and husband Bill of Philippi, Carolene Sheets and husband Jim of Jane Lew, and Lola Spangler of Buckhannon; two step-sons, Howard W. Smith and wife Sandy of Buckhannon and Charles Ray Smith of WV; 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; one brother, Darrell Kincaid and wife Sharon of Jane Lew; three sisters, Clara Shaw and husband Rodney of Jane Lew, Marlene Bennett and husband John of McWhorter, and Lolarene Bacorn and husband Bill of Cortland, Ohio.
In addition to her husband and parents she was preceded in death by one son Estel Riley, three sisters, Breatice Boggs, Zelma Smith and Carol Lee Kincaid; one brother, Gerald Kincaid and one step daughter Nellie Mae Golden.
She was a homemaker and a member of AARP. She was a member of the over 50 club at Liberty Baptist Church and was an avid bowler. Friends will be received Wednesday, August 1, from 4 to 8 p.m., at the Poling-St. Clair Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m., on Thursday at the funeral home with the Rev. Junior Harris officiating. Burial will follow in the Heavner cemetery in Buckhannon.

Rose Ann Calabrese Swiger
Rose Ann Calabrese Swiger, 82, lifetime resident of Weston, passed away on July 28, 2012.
Born on June 3, 1930, Mrs. Swiger was the youngest daughter and last surviving child of Giovanni ("John") Calabrese and Madeline Costellucci Calabrese, and the beloved sister of Marie Antoinette ("Toni") Calabrese Biggs and Teresa Marie ("TeTe") Calabrese, R.N. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Bob Swiger.
A 1948 graduate of St. Patrick High School, Mrs. Swiger received a full scholarship to the College of Mount St. Joseph-on-the-Ohio in Cincinnati, Ohio, receiving her degree in Medical Technology in 1952. She began her career as a laboratory technologist at St. Mary's Hospital in Clarksburg, and at Weston State Hospital, before joining Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital, where she retired after 40 years of service. Mrs. Swiger was a member of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, whose Board of Registry recognized her 50 years of service in 2002, noting that "your contribution to the profession sets a superior example and paves a fine road for those who follow."
Mrs. Swiger was a lifetime member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Weston, where she was baptized and confirmed, and where she wed Robert Lee (Bob) Swiger on September 3, 1954. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court Victory for more than 50 years, as well as a member of the St. Patrick Church Altar Society. She belonged to the Weston Garden Club, The Deerfield Country Club Ladies Golf Association, and the Weston Cotillion Club, where she spent many happy evenings dancing in the arms of her lifelong sweetheart and husband, Bob.
Also surviving her are her three children and their spouses, Kevin Robert Swiger and wife Dee of Jane Lew, Mary Anne Ellifritz and husband Nelson of Falling Waters and Elizabeth Lynn Moneypenny and husband Tim of Weston. She leaves behind eight cherished grandchildren, Cofa McCarthy of Charleston, S.C., Sean Swiger of Morgantown, Emily Hawver of Falling Waters, Ethan Hawver of Winchester, Va., Jalyn Riggleman of New York City, N.Y., Elyse and Claire Moneypenny of Weston and Christian Swiger of Jane Lew. Mrs. Swiger is also survived by four great-grandchildren, Harper and Belamie Swiger of Morgantown, Isabella Kesner of Falling Waters, and Teagan McCarthy of Charleston, S.C.
Friends were received on Monday, July 30, from 2 p.m., to 4 p.m., and from 6 p.m., to 8 p.m., at Hardman-Paletti Funeral Home, 730 Main Avenue, Weston.
A Rosary was recited on Monday evening at 7:30 p.m., in the Funeral Home Chapel. The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10 a.m., on Tuesday, July 31, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Weston with the Rev. J. Stephen Vallelonga officiating; internment follwed at Machpelah Cemetary.
Following internment, friends were invited to join the family in a fellowship meal at St. Patrick School cafeteria.
