Sherley M. Wandling

Sherley Marvin Wandling, 90, of Hurricane died Monday, May 16, 2005, after a short illness.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma Ellen Kersey Wandling.

Surviving: sisters-in-law, Maxine Kersey Young of Midway and Darlene Kersey Warner of Ona; several nieces and nephews.

Graveside service was held Wednesday, May 18. 2005, at Haven of Rest Chapel, Red House, with the Rev. Jim Franklin. Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, was in charge of arrangements.

Memorial donations may be made to Kanawha Hospice Care, 1143 Dunbar Avenue, Dunbar WV 25064.

Georgia J. Johns

Georgia J. Searls Johns, 73, of Buffalo died Saturday, May 14, 2005, at SunBridge of Putnam following a short illness.

She was a retired cook for AEP River Transportation Division with 22 years of service.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Norman and Mabel Searls, one brother and five sisters.

Surviving: daughters, Cynthia “Sparky” Fowler of Buffalo, Willette “Willie” Frye of Buffalo and Stephanie Jackson of Clendenin; sons, Frank Johns of Scott Depot and William “Bill” Johns of St. Albans; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren.

Private graveside service was held Tuesday, May 17, 2005, at Buffalo Memorial Park with the Rev. Wayne Burch officiating.

Mary Jo Powell

Mary Jo Powell, 75, of Red House died Saturday, May 14, 2005, in Thomas Memorial Hospital.

She was retired from Thomas Memorial Hospital with 20 years of service and a member of Riverside Baptist Church.

Surviving: son, John M. and wife, Laura Kirk, of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; sister, Juanita Arrington of St. Albans; grandchildren, Joshua and wife, Sherri Kirk, Kimberly Dawn and husband, Jacob Shouse; great-grandchildren, Logan Kirk, Corey Shouse and Austin Shouse; nieces, Clara Lynn Pape of Winfield and Geneva Asbury of Evans; nephew, George Arrington of Tennessee.

Service was held Tuesday, May 17, 2005, at Riverside Baptist Church, Red house, with Pastor Michael Hanna officiating. Entombment was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Gatens-Harding Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of arrangements.

James B. Dotson

James B. Dotson, 81, of Scott Depot died May 17, 2005, at home.

Born January 22, 1924 in Cabin Creek, he was a son of the late Hubert I. and Lillie Mae Petry Dotson. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Ray Dotson.

He was retired from the C&O Railroad with 43 years of service and a member of the Transportation Communication Union and Rand Lions Club. He was a member of Forrest Burdette Memorial United Methodist Church, Hurricane, and a former member of the St. John United Methodist Church, Rand. He was a 1942 graduate of East Bank High School and served during World War II with the U.S. Army.

Surviving: wife, Margaret Nuckols Dotson; sons, Jerry Dotson and wife, Robin, of Cary, North Carolina, John Dotson and wife, Kristi, of Spokane, Washington ; daughters, Kathy Dotson of Scott Depot, Victoria Mullins and husband, Scott, of Hurricane; grandchildren, Paul Dotson and wife, Cathy, of Scott Depot, Jason Mullins, Jimmie Mullins and Jessica Mullins, all of Hurricane, McKenzie and Hannah Dotson of Cary, Alex and Ashley Dotson of Spokane; great-grandchildren, Megan and Alexis Dotson of Scott Depot; nephews, C. Ray Dotson and wife, Cody, of Seattle, Washington , David Michael Dotson of Chesapeake, Ohio, and C.E. Willard of Nitro; nieces, Peggy Rowe and husband, Steve, of South Point, Ohio, Denise, Judy and Melissa Dotson, all of Florida; cousins, Donald and Shirley Conley of Rand, Bob and Helen Conley of Linville, Texas .

Service was held Friday, May 20, 2005, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with Dr. Dan Hogan officiating. Burial was in Kanawha Valley Memorial Gardens, Glasgow.

Memorial donations may be made to Forrest Burdette Memorial United Methodist Church, 2848 Putnam Avenue, Hurricane WV 25526 or to Kanawha Hospice Care, 1143 Dunbar Avenue, Dunbar WV 25064.

Richard J. Hoylman

Richard J. “Dick” Hoylman, 86, of Scott Depot died May 18, 2005, in CAMC General Hospital after a sudden illness.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Chandler Hoylman, and his parents, Joseph and Alma Headrick Hoylman.

He was a retired owner and founder of Hoylman & Huffman Appliances and attended First Christian Church, St. Albans. He was a member of South Charleston Masonic Lodge 168 AF&AM and 14th degree Scottish Rite Bodies. He was a member of the Merchant Marines during World War II and was a 60-year resident of the Greater Charleston area.

Surviving: son and his wife, Larry R. and Bonnie Hoylman of Scott Depot; daughters and their husbands, Gail and Max Lemma of Charleston, Diana and Steve Schirtzinger of Pittsburgh; sister, Mary L. Mott of Radnor, Pennsylvania ; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

Service was held Saturday, May 21, 2005, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, with the Rev. William F. Berry officiating. Burial was in Heavner Cemetery, Buckhannon.

Thomas M. Rhule Sr.

Thomas Martin Rhule Sr., 79, died May 20, 2005, at Valley Center following a short illness.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Taylor and Edythe Shanklin Rhule, and brothers, William Taylor Rhule II and Robert Shanklin Rhule.

A lifelong resident of West Virginia, he was born in Charleston on July 11, 1925 and lived in St. Albans where he attended elementary school. He spent his teen years in Greenbrier County with his grandmother. After attending Ronceverte High School, he moved back to Charleston and became involved in the automobile business.

He married Phyllis Irene Polcyn of Dunbar in 1947 and they made their home in St. Albans, where he worked for St. Albans Motors, He and friend, “Gentleman Gene” Ashworth for a partnership, Rhule and Ashworth Motors. Eventually, he owned his own business, Tom Rhule Motors until the late 1980s when he retired for the first time. He continued to work for other auto dealerships until illness forced his retirement from the auto business for good.

In 2003 he began working for Wackenhut Security at the John Amos Plant in Winfield He retired for a third time in September 2004 to care for his wife and enjoy puttering around his farm.

An enthusiastic Shriner, he enjoyed many activities and friendships in the Hurricane Blue Lodge and the Charleston Shrine Center, including precision marching in the Shriners Oriental Band.

He was a member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church, serving as an usher for many years.

Surviving: wife, Phyllis; children, Judith Gillian and husband, Mike, Thomas M. Rhule Jr. and wife, Judy, Donna McKuhen and husband, Matt, Pam Rhule and friend, Aaron Abend; grandchildren, Gregory Gillian, Sarah Gillian, Elizabeth Rhule, Wesley Coiner, and Kelsie McKuhen; great-grandchildren, Ryan Coiner and Owen Gillian; sister, Edith Jennings; many brothers- and sisters-in-law; numerous nieces and nephews.

Service was held Sunday, May 22, 2005, at Mount Vernon Baptist Church, Hurricane, with Pastor Kregg Burris officiating. Burial was in Grandview Memorial Park, Dunbar. Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley, was in charge of arrangements.

Memorial donations may be made to CORF or to Shriners Children's Hospital.

T. Clinton Wise

T. Clinton Wise, 91, of St. Albans, formerly of Eleanor, died Saturday, May 21, 2005, in Teays Valley Center, Hurricane, following a long illness.

Born July 4, 1913 at Mercer Bottom, West Virginia, he was the son of the late W.W. Wise and Emma J. Lawson Wise. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Herman Wise.

He was a retired manager of the Eleanor IGA with 19 years of service, and a member of Trinity Baptist Church, st. Albans.

Surviving: wife, Jane C. Wise; son, Tom Wise Jr. and his wife, Karen, of Denver, Colorado; daughter, Dottie Angle and her husband, Larry, of Hurricane; brothers, Raymond Wise, Claude Wise and his wife, Peg, all of South Charleston, and Bob Wise and his wife, Beulah, of Kenova; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

Service was held Tuesday, May 24, 2005, at Bartlett-Chapman Funeral Home, St. Albans, with the Rev. Allen Stewart and Tom Wise III officiating. Burial was in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.

Ray Braley

Ray Braley, 94, of Milton, died May 16, 2005, in St. Mary's Medical Center. He was born November 12, 1910, in Milton. He is a child of God and the son of the late Ernest and Maud Payton Braley. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Young Braley; great-grandson, Nathan Clay and one brother, Artie Braley. He was a member of the Church in the Valley, Milton, and a former member of Antioch Baptist Church, Ona. He was also a welder and pipefitter of Local #521. He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and Jim Clay and Rae Janet and Michael Johnson, all of Milton; three grandchildren and spouses, Jamie and Buddy Cooper of Milton, Stephen and Terry Clay of Miamisburg, Ohio, and Susan and Xavier Ibanez of Huntington; and five great-grandchildren, James Cooper, Joshua, Sarah, and Anna Clay, and Riley, Ibanez. Funeral services were held Saturday, May 21, 2005 at the Wallace Funeral Home, Milton, by Rev. Jim Franklin. Burial in Woodmere Memorial Park, Huntington.

Delana E. Beaver

Delana E. Beaver, 68, of Milton, widow of James Franklin Beaver, died Thursday in Fairhaven Rest Home, Huntington. Funeral services were held Monday, May 23, 2005, Heck Funeral Home, Milton; burial in Milton Cemetery.

Virginia “Rosalie” Arthur

Virginia “Rosalie” Arthur, 86, of Huntington died Saturday, May 21, 2005, in Florida. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, May 25, 2005, at Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville. Burial in Oaklawn Memorial Park. She was born August 20, 1918, the daughter of the late Eustace and Sadie Fellure Crawford. Also preceding her in death were her husband of 67 years, Delbert W. Arthur Sr.; three brothers, Donald, Arthur and Charles Crawford; and four sisters, Jessie Morris, Clara Rhodes, Charlotte Cremeans and Eloise Meadows. She was a licensed practical nurse. She was a member of the Apostolic Assembly of Yahshua. Survivors include one brother, William Crawford of California; five sons, Delbert W. “Buddy” Arthur Jr. and Carl “Bubby” Arthur of Florida, Danny Arthur and Kerry Arthur of Huntington and Terry Arthur of South Carolina; one daughter, Channa Conner of Huntington; and 18 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Rosalie was a faithful servant of Yahweh. Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements.

Lynn Allen Gough

Lynn Allen Gough, 47, of Huntington died at home. He was born May 7, 1958, in Illinois, a son of the late Charles Robert Gough and Mary “Maggie” Magalene Hotsinpiller Gough Rowe of Milton. He graduated from Glenville State College and Marshall University. He had training in food service, as a chef at Huntington Civic Center, Green Acres and Speedway at the time of his death. He was a member of Baptist Temple, where he was active in the choir; a member of the Choral Union at Marshall; active in music and drama while in high school; a strong supporter of Special Olympics; and a Marshall University fan. In addition to his mother, surviving are his stepfather, the Rev. Harry T. Rowe of Milton; sister, Becky Huff of Huntington; stepsister, Carol and Joe Newlon; aunt, Marion Gough; nephews and nieces, Luke and April Newlon, Ben Newlon, Nick Newton, Tyler and Hannah Newlon; and cousins, Ruth Evans and Richard Hotsinpiller of Illinois. Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 24, 2005, at Henson Mortuary with the Rev. Andrew Magnusson officiating; burial in Woodsdale Cemetery, Grafton, W.Va. Garland Leonard Holley

Garland Leonard Holley, 80, of Milton went to be with the Lord on Friday, May 20, 2005, at his residence. Graveside services were conducted Tuesday, May 24, 2005, in Holley Cemetery, Milton, with the Rev Windell Shull officiating. He was born August 15, 1924 in Cabell County, a son of the late Arvil and Ollis Edmonds Holley. Garland retired from Huntington State Hospital in 1986 and was a member of Bias Chapel Church. He is survived by his wife, Betty Holley; six children, Lona Jean McGuffin, Timothy Holley, Garland Holley Jr., Shirley Jeffers, Juanita Henry and Mike Holley; grandchildren Kent Holley, Bethany Holley, Andrew Holley, Arvil Holley, Garland Ray Holley, Melissa Holley, Jeremy Henry, Robert Holley, Michael Holley and Scottie Holley, and several great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his aunt Macil Massie and stepson Fletcher Charles Chinn III. Garland has many friends and neighbors who loved and cared for him and he will be sadly missed.

Madeline Wallace Harper

Madeline Wallace Harper, a longtime resident of Barboursville, and most recently a resident of Woodlands Retirement Community, Huntington, passed away Saturday, May 21, 2005, in St Mary's Medical Center. Funeral service were conducted Wednesday, May 25, 2005, at Steele Memorial United Methodist Church by the Rev. Julia Bolling, Dr. Ed Grant and Eulogy by Tom Hacala. Entombment in Woodmere Memorial Park Abbey of Remembrance. She was a daughter of the late Fred and Erma Plymale Carey. She was a member of the Steele Memorial United Methodist Church; a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Kenova; White Shrine; and the local DAR. Chapter. Her late husband of 35 years, J. Alfred Wallace, established the Wallace Funeral Home in 1943, and she was active in the business until her retirement. She was also preceded in death most recently by her second husband Olen T. Harper, in Feb. 2005; two brothers, Max Carey and Charles M. Carey; and one sister, Anna Lee Brown. She is survived by her twin sister, Mrs. Robert (Maxine) Mattill of Huntington; special loving niece, Sara Hacala, her husband, Tom, and their daughter, Katie; very close nieces and nephew, Cecilia Webb, Erma Jane Emerson and Michael Carey, sister-in-law, Mrs. Charles (Virginia) Carey, and also several other close relatives and countless friends. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements.

Oretha McDonie

Oretha McDonie, 85, of Barboursville, WV, passed away Wednesday, May 18, 2005, at Heartland of Riverview, South Point, Ohio. Funeral services were conducted at noon Saturday, May 21, 2005 at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville, by Pastor Pete Davidson. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. She was born July 2, 1919, in Barboursville, a daughter of the late Elba and Lula Keenan McCallister. She was a retired employee of the State of West Virginia with 12 years of service. She was preceded in death by the father of their children, Lonnie McDonie, and one grandson, Lonnie Johnson; two brothers, Junior “Mack” McCallister and Lyle “John” McCallister; one sister, Alta Yeager. She is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law, Vonna Fulks of Bradenton, Fla., Joyce and Frank Johnson of Milton, Brenda Newman of Ona and Sharon “Shea:” and Mike Harbour of Barboursville; one son and daughter-in-law, Troy and Dianna McDonie of Barboursville; two sisters, Beatrice Burgess of Barboursville and Fredda Ray of Milton; three brothers, Hedrick Wirt McCallister of Barboursville, Delbert McCallister of Salt Rock, and Robert “Bob” McCallister of Barboursville; seven grandchildren, Angela Mohr, Bruce Mohr and Candace Fulks all of Florida, Nick Newman of Barboursville, Penny Sowards of Tennessee, and Les and Matt Harbour of Barboursville; seven great-grandchildren; and a very special friend, Shane Lawson. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements.

Verba Gene Murphy

Verba Gene Murphy, 74, of Culloden, passed away Tuesday, May 17, 2005 in St. Mary's Medical Center. A memorial service was held Friday, May 20, 2005 at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, with Rev. Bob O. Addis officiating. She was born December 6, 1930, in Culloden, WV, a daughter of the late Lewis A. and Beulah Rowsey Thompson. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ancil H. Murphy; two sons James Harvey Meadows and Larry Meadows; sister Joyce Hysell. She spent her whole life in the medical field, dedicated to helping others. She donated her body to the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine at Marshall University. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Terry White of Hockessin, Del.; one daughter-in-law, Ann Meadows of Culloden; four brothers, James, Carl, Joe and Robert Thompson; four grandchildren, Hollie Cotner and her husband Mike, Christopher Meadows, Matthew White and Daniel White ; two great-grandchildren, Eric Cotner and Savanna Meadows. Heck Funeral Home, Milton, was in charge of arrangements. The family requests donations be made to Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine at Marshall University. French Marion Hatfield

French Marion Hatfield, 65, of Culloden, died May 18, 2005. Born October 4, 1939, graduate of Guyan Valley High School in 1958. Served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Kidd. A lifetime member of the American Legion Post #111. A former employee of Union Carbide. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Linda “Monk” Hatfield and their niece, Stacie Lovely Keaton; sisters Betty Mosely of Logan, Carolyn McCloud of Branchland and a host of nieces and nephews. Marion will be missed by a lot of family and good friends. Marions was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Ruth Hatfield and nine brothers, James, William, Raymond, Bobby, Freeman, Henry, Donald, Louie and Naaman. Koontz Funeral Home, Hamlin was in charge of arrangements. Funeral services were held at Trace Fork Baptist Church with Pastor Jim Landis officiating. Burial at Trace Fork Baptist Cemetery, Rt 34, Culloden, with military graveside rites by American Legion Post #111.
