Phil Shanor, 77, of Ranchester passed away on Friday, January 25, 2002, at his residence.
Phil Shanor was born on May 7, 1924, in Sheridan, Wyoming, to Jesse and Charlotte (Verley) Shanor. He married Karen Sells in Sheridan on January 7, 1953. He was a family man who enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and wife. He loved the mountains, and spent most summers in the Big Horn Mountains, camping and cutting wood for sale. He spent winters snowmobiling with family helping anyone with trouble. He donated many hours helping the Friends of Ranchester and surrounding areas. He enjoyed decorating the town and homes for Christmas.
Mr. Shanor was preceded in death by his parents, his son Joe O. Shanor, his grandson Steven C. Shanor, two sisters Lois J. Shanor and Mildred S. Williams, and his brother Ray O. Shanor. He is survived by his wife Karen Shanor of Ranchester; his son Steve Shanor and wife Sherrie of Ranchester; his two daughters Terry Estes and husband Ted of Stuart, Florida, and Robin Sullivan and husband Reese Bassett of Bozeman, Montana; his four brothers, LeRoy Shanor of Deaver, Wyoming, Martin Shanor and Bill Shanor of Kalispell, Montana, and Bob Shanor of Powell, Wyoming; his sister Betty Dalkey of Wenatchee, Washington; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Cremation has taken place and services will be held at a later date. Kane Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Phil’s name to Hospice of the Big Horns in care of Delphine Toner, First Interstate Bank, P.O. Box 2007, Sheridan, WY 82801.

Edwin L. Sholine age 79 of Sheridan, WY
Died Friday, January 5, 2002, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County
Born June 2, 1922, in Fort Collins, CO
Parents - William & Elizabeth (Rhieners) Sholine

He grew up and graduated high school in Fort Collins and graduated from Colorado A&M University. He was a well-known athlete at both institutions. Ed served in the U.S. Army for three years in the OSS division. From 1946-1947, he played basketball for the Denver Nuggets. He married Alice Foreman on May 13, 1946, in Cheyenne, WY. They moved to the Sholine Ranch at Glendevey, CO, where they made their home for 13 years. In 1959, they moved to Saratoga, WY, where he managed the Cedar Creek Ranch until 1987 when they moved to Sheridan. Ed enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a member of the Sheridan Wesleyan Church. He loved his grandchildren and his dogs Lucy and Bo.

Shirley Songer
1937 - 2002
Shirley Songer, age 64, of Sheridan, WY, died Friday, March 8, 2002, at her Sheridan home. She was born on May 18, 1937, in Watford City, N. Dakota, to Johnnie and Sylvia (Hetland) Skaar.

The family came to Sheridan when she was a little girl. Shirley attended schools in Sheridan and graduated from Sheridan High School in 1955. She worked at the Telephone Company until going to work as a legal secretary for Redle, Yonkee & Arney attorneys. Shirley married Gene Songer in Sheridan. She went to work for the County Court in the late 1980’s until she retired. Shirley loved music, was a musician, songwriter and performed with her sisters. Shirley was a speaker for Christian Women’s Club, a member of Women’s Aglow and performed with Sweet Adeline’s singing group in Carnegie Hall. As a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Shirley was a Stephens Minister, Bethel Bible teacher, helped form the contemporary Praise & Worship service and formed the Cherub Choir for the youth.

Shirley is survived by her husband Gene; son Mike Songer & wife Karen of Billings, MT; daughters Kari Henrichs & husband Greg of Elk Creek, NE, and Jayleen Florian & husband Terry of Gill, CO; grandchildren Ian, Angela, Ashli, Colter, Kyle Gene, Kelly, Jenna & Jessie; great granddaughter Mercedez; sisters Joanne Larsen & husband Don of Sheridan, Dee Pelesky & husband Gerry of Sheridan and Lorri Wilson of Sheridan; nieces & nephews Don, Connie, Debbie, Hollie, Shellie and Alisa.

A Celebration of Life will be 10:00am on Wednesday (Mar. 13th) from Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev.’s Ronald Nelson and Wilbur Holz officiating. Interment will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Ruby Ray (Pilch) Stetter, 84 of Frannie, WY, died January 5, 2002 in the Powell Hospital.
Mrs. Stetter was born May 30, 1917 in Zortman, MT to Joseph R. and Lucy F. (Poulin) Holt. She grew up and attended schools in the Mills and Casper, WY area and graduated from Casper High School.

She married Earl Mason Ray September 6, 1939 and they lived in the Hamilton Dome area. Mr. Ray was killed in an oil field accident in 1954. She moved to Sheridan and worked for the Ice Box Grocery on Coffeen Ave. and married George Walter "Tony" Pilch December 27, 1956 in Worland, WY. They bought the Dayton Locker Plant in Dayton and then started the Pilch Processing Plant in Acme, which was a family operation.

In 1975 Mr. & Mrs. Pilch moved to Alaska and Mrs. Pilch was a police dispatcher in Seward, Alaska. Mr. Pilch died April 3, 1976. In 1978 she moved to California and on Dec. 26, 1978 she married Mudge Stetter in Eureka, CA. In 1986 they moved to Frannie, WY. Mr. Stetter died in March, 2000.

Mrs. Stetter was a member of the Catholic Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her 3 husbands, 1 son, Earl Wayne Ray, 1 brother, and 1 sister.

Mrs. Stetter is survived by 2 sons, Rod Pilch of Moose Pass, Alaska, and James A. Pilch of Lawrence, KS; 3 daughters, Adele Hooglund, Mary L. Pilch, and Jane Perdue, all of Lawrence, KS, 1 sister, Winnie Bond of Frannie, WY, 13 grandchildren, and numerous great grandchildren.

Services for Mrs. Stetter will be 1:00 PM Friday, January 11, 2002 at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with Father Robert Fox officiating. Burial will be in the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Memorials in memory of Mrs. Stetter may be made to the Diabetes Foundation, in care of Delphine Toner, 1st Interstate Bank, Sheridan, WY.

Nathan Lee Stewart age 23 of Brookings, SD
Died Sunday, February 10, 2002, in Valley Hospital, Sioux Falls, SD

He grew up on the family farm N. of Chamberlain, SD. He graduated from Chamberlain High School with honors. Nate moved to Brookings, SD, where he worked for Rupp Masonry. He enjoyed fishing, ice fishing and water skiing. He was a member of the Old Apostolic Lutheran Church.

Barbara Strahl Age 82 of Big Horn, WY
Died Monday, February 18, 2002, in her home
Born January 22, 1920, in Gakowa, Yugoslavia
Parents - Franz & Theresia (Novak) Gebert

She grew up and attended schools in Yugoslavia. She married Matthias Strahl on June 19, 1939, in Yugoslavia. They immigrated to the U.S.A. in 1952. They lived in Chicago, IL, until they retired in 1984 and moved to Sheridan. In 1994, they moved to Big Horn. She enjoyed gardening, baking, fishing, hiking and in her younger years, bowling.

She was preceded in death by two sons Josef & Frank; two brothers Franz and Anton; and her parents.

Interment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Big Horn. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Anna Suel
1910 - 2002
Anna Suel, age 91, of Sheridan, WY, died Wednesday, February 6, 2002, in Westview Health Care Center, Sheridan. She was in a wheel chair for nearly two years and also had no memory of the good old times.

Anna was born on October 24, 1910, to immigrant parents John & Anna (Varmus) Kryana in Houtzdale, PA. When she was three, the family came to Wyoming so her father could work in the coal mines. The lived in Acme until they leased a place on Upper Prairie Dog Creek. Later they moved to Beckton Hill near the P.K. Lane. They ranched there and Anna had to ride four miles to Beckton School. Anna finished the 8th grade before they moved to the Keystone Ranch above Ranchester, WY, on Wolf Creek. They bought the ranch in 1931. Anna helped with the ranch working in the hay fields and the grain fields. She worked hard all her life. Anna married Mike Suel in 1930 and after their daughter Kathleen was born they moved from the Keystone Ranch to a neighboring ranch in 1936. Anna was a wonderful seamstress and a great cook. They moved quite a lot and in 1958 they leased a ranch on Lower Prairie Dog Creek. In 1973, they purchased a ranch on Dutch Creek. Mike only lived a year before dying of cancer in 1974. Anna lived on the ranch until 1999. She was a person who was busy doing something all the time. She loved all her animals, had a dog, cat and a horse that she liked really well. She was unable to stay on the ranch after she started to be confused and she moved into Sheridan to Westview.

Her parents and her brother Jack also preceded her in death.

Anna is survived by her daughter Kathleen Hardesty of Wyarno, WY; grandson James T. Hardesty & wife Candy; great grandsons Jamie & Jared Hardesty and Shane Farella; grandson Mike Hardesty & wife Kyla; great grandson J.D. Hardesty and great granddaughter Jenna; sister Margaret Edmonds of N. Platte, NE; nephew John Walsh and his family of Nebraska; and numerous other nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be 2:00pm on Monday (Feb. 11th) from Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Douglas Goodwin officiating. Interment will be in the Sheridan Elks Cemetery.

Memorials may benefit the Shrine Crippled Children Travel Fund, Box K, Sheridan.
