THOMAS PAUL ROBINSON
Funeral services for longtime Douglas resident Thomas Paul Robinson, 91, were held June 7 at Gorman Funeral Homes Converse Chapel in Douglas, with Pastor Tom Strock of First Baptist Church of Lusk officiating and Jay Butler, Lynne Butler and Tom Butler as eulogists. Interment was at Douglas Park Cemetery. Mr. Robinson died June 1, 2004, at the Central Wyoming Hospice House in Casper, with his wife and daughter by his side. He was born March 19, 1913, in Greeley, Neb., to Thomas P. Robinson Sr. and Nettie (McCormick) Robinson. When he was 3 years old, his family came to Douglas in a covered wagon with Tom, his infant brother and a 9-year-old sister. Tom has since resided in Converse County. He was educated at a country school west of Douglas. He and Ella Edwards eloped and went to Hot Springs, S.D., to be married on Oct. 13, 1934. He was looking forward to celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary. Mr. Robinson’s parents homesteaded on land 15 miles north of Douglas. He and Ella still live on the land, where his parents and Ella’s parents homesteaded. Besides being a full-time rancher, Mr. Robinson worked at various jobs to supplement the family income. Some of the jobs included working three years at the Douglas Seed House, five years at the Douglas Wool House, eight years with Knisley Moore Construction and several years with the Converse County Road and Bridge crew. In 1998 he was honored by being chosen Wyoming State Fair Distinguished Rancher of the Year. In 2003 he participated with the Natural Resource Conservation Services in a sagebrush reduction project. Because of this project the Robinsons were awarded the Converse County Conservation District 2003 Cooperator of the Year Award. He has been a member of the Converse County Farm Bureau for many years. Mr. Robinson was very much a family man and delighted in having his entire family come to the ranch for reunions. Although he often couldn’t see or hear the performances, he was in attendance when his great-granddaughters participated in Douglas school events. Retirement was not a word in his vocabulary. Every summer he drove along every fence line to make sure that the fences were repaired. This was quite an accomplishment considering his age and the fact that he has been legally blind for years. Mr. Robinson was preceded in death by his father on Dec. 24, 1964; mother on June 2, 1922; brother Merle Robinson in December 1923; and sister Helen Eberspecher on Aug. 2, 1982. He is survived by his wife Ella of Douglas; daughter Dorothy Butler of Georgetown, Ken.; three grandchildren, Jay and wife Linda Butler of Douglas, Tom and wife Wendy deForest Butler of Burlington, Va., and Lynne and husband John Hicks of Idaho Springs, Colo.; four great-grandchildren, Karen and Beth Butler of Douglas and Larson and Grace deForest Butler of Burlington. Pallbearers were Bob Hageman, Ron Hageman, Monte Edwards, Russell Edwards, Ron Johnson, Mike Eberspecher and Mel Fuller. Honorary pallbearers were Earl Shatto, Jerry Mittleider, Chet Lane, Bob Manning, Frank Rohrer, Dave Rodeman and all of his many other friends. A memorial to the Douglas Senior Citizens Center, P.O. Box 192, Douglas, 82633, First United Methodist Church, 136 S. Fifth St., Douglas, 82633, or to Central Wyoming Hospice Home, 319 S. Wilson St., Casper, 82601, would be appreciated by the family. She received her primary education in a one-room schoolhouse and then attended high school at Glenrock. She graduated from Douglas High School in 1946. While living in the mountains, she worked as a sheepherder and a hunting guide. She loved to hunt and fish and enjoyed the outdoors. She also was an avid reader, able horsewoman and pet lover. Mrs. Ranes married Samuel L. “Bud” Johnson in January 1947. They and their four children ranched north of Douglas on the Jake Johnson ranch. In January 1961, she married Wayne R. Hiser. They lived in Casper and Valentine, Neb., before returning to Douglas. Two more children were born into the family through this union. In April 1973 she married Mel Ranes, and the family moved to Montana. She spent the later years of her life living close to one of her daughters in Sidney, Mont. Recently, she returned to Wyoming to reside at the Life Care Center at Casper. Her life’s joy was her six children and her resulting grandchildren. She was a selfless giver who rarely did anything special for herself. A champion of the underdog, she befriended lost animals and souls alike. People who met her were drawn to her zest for living and entertained by her stories of mountain life. She was preceded in death by her parents, Doc and Peggy Robbins; husbands Samuel L. Johnson and Wayne R. Hiser; and grandson Clay Carlin. She is survived by four sons, Jake and wife Phyllis Johnson, Mike Johnson and Cactus Hiser, all of Douglas, and Cotton and wife Sue Hiser of Meeteetse; daughters Marlane Johnson of Laurel, Mont., and Dollie and husband Larry Abbott of Sidney; sisters Ann and Chet Brock of Douglas and Doris and Allan Black of Casper; brother Ken and wife Noreen Robbins; five grandsons; nine granddaughters; nine great-grandchildren; and a large extended family. The void she has left behind is immeasurable, but the legacy of the family she created lives on. She will be forever missed. Pallbearers were Jake Johnson, Mike Johnson, Cotton Hiser, Cactus Hiser, Larry Abbott and Shane Abbott. Honorary pallbearers were Jason Johnson, Josh Johnson, Skeeter Hiser and Skobee Hiser.
