Emory Joseph Anderson, Jr.

ALTA — Emory Joseph Anderson, Jr., 81, of Victor, Idaho, died at St. John’s Hospital in Jackson on Friday, Jan. 20, 2006, of heart failure.

The eldest of three children to Emory and Lena Anderson of Broadacre, Ohio, Emory was born Oct. 26, 1924. He graduated from the New York State Maritime Academy in New York City, where he excelled in seamanship and sailing. He served as an officer in the Merchant Marine until August 1945, later majoring in geology at the College of Wooster in Wooster, Ohio, where he met and married Ruth “Rusty” Davies of Wooster. He also studied at Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio, and served in the U. S. Naval Reserve.

Among other accomplishments, he was a reporter for the Wooster Daily Record and the Marion Star, chief editor of several publications, including Clevelander Magazine for the Cleveland Chamber of Commerce and the Cleveland Engineer for the Cleveland Engineering Society, and an industrial publicist for the Griswold Eshleman Co.

A longtime observer of the natural world, he enjoyed watching birds, animals and cloud formations as well as skiing, hiking, sailing and traveling.

Emory and Rusty Anderson were active in the early days of the National Ski Patrol, participated in the Cleveland Mountaineers, and raced competitively on sailboats on Lake Erie. His business traveling spurred the couple to create a series of travel films that were widely shown in the Midwest in the 1950s and 1960s.

The family moved to the Rocky Mountains in 1969, where he served as editor of the Northern Wyoming Daily News in Worland and then started his own weekly newspaper, the Western Free Post. After a time doing ranch work, the family moved to Jackson when Anderson became editor of the Jackson Hole Guide. While in Jackson, he also started free-lance writing, with articles appearing in many regional publications such as the Billings Gazette, Casper Star-Tribune, Western Horse & Rider, Rodeo, Southwest Art and other magazines. The Andersons moved to Victor in 1990.

A lifelong essayist, Anderson authored “The Sage of Bellyache Flats,” based on pieces that described the family’s move from Ohio to Wyoming. The 200-page memoir was published in 1988.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Ruthie Anderson.

Anderson’s immediate family includes his brother Paul Anderson of Bloomingdale, Ohio; his wife Rusty Anderson; four sons — Joe (Sandy) Anderson, of Jackson; Bill (Linda Chester) Anderson of Idaho Falls, Idaho; Peter (Jeanne) Anderson of Driggs, Idaho; David (Leslie Ryan) Anderson of Victor; three grand-daughters – Michelle (Dallas) Buschow of Jackson; Erika (Larry Hartenstein) Anderson of Jackson; and Christie (Jerry) Jones of Houston, Texas; and two great-grandchildren, Tyler and Derek Buschow of Jackson.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, Feb. 12, at 3 p.m. at St. Francis of the Tetons Episcopal Church in Alta, Wyo.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Anderson’s honor to the College of Wooster, 1189 Beall Ave., Wooster, OH 44691.

Virginia Lee (Dickinson) Lytle

WORLAND — Virginia Lee (Dickinson) Lytle, 63, died, Jan. 31, 2006, due to complications from surgery at the University of Colorado Hospital in Denver, Colo.

Virginia was born on April 1, 1942 in Axtel, Kan. to Virgel and Helen Hall. She attended elementary school in Marysville, Kan. as well as in Sheridan and Hyattville. She attended middle school and high school in Worland.

Virginia loved to travel on many road trips with family and friends, she enjoyed arts and crafts, fine dining, fine wine, wearing jewelry, playing cards, playing games on the computer, and enjoyed attending church when she able to do so.

Virginia was preceded in death by her husband Raymond Dickinson of Worland, her parents, her brother Edward Hall, her sister Shirley Pitt, her nephew Roy Lee Hall, her nephew Ted Hall, her niece Linda Hall, and her great-nephew Devon Carrazabes.

Virginia is survived by her husband Roy Lytle, of Worland, her son Mark (Vicki) Dickinson and grandchildren Roger, Emily, Katie, and Annie all of Lake Elsinore, Calif., her brother Kenneth (Anna) Hall of Manderson, her brother Leon (May) Hall of Yucca, Ariz., her sister Marjorie (Jay) Katz of Gillette, and her brother David (Charlotte) Hall of Manderson, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Virginia is also survived by her stepchildren Bernadine (Rick) Wathen of Worland and other step-children and their families.

There will be a memorial service to celebrate Virginia’s life on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2006 at 10:30 a.m. at the New Life Christian Center in Worland. Pastor Larry Ramsfield will be officiating.

There will be no formal dinner afterwards.

In lieu of flowers, Virginia’s family would like any donations to be sent to the University of Colorado Hospital in Denver to further the research of pulmonary hypertension.

Joseph Gallegos

WORLAND — Joseph Gallegos, 55, of Cody, formerly of Worland, died March 17, 2006 at West Park Hospital following a heart attack. He was born on Feb. 19, 1951 in Worland to Santos S. and Jennie (Lopez) Gallegos.

Joe was raised in Worland and attended schools in Worland. He had worked for Schlumberger (Dowell) in Worland for nearly 25 years.

He enjoyed being with his family and home life. Joe was a member of St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church in Worland.

He married Barbara B. Hullings on January 24, 2003 at Red Lodge, Montana and the couple then made their home in Cody.

He is survived by his wife; his parents of Worland; sons Joe Jr., James, Paul, and Nicholas; daughters Candy and Kari; five grandchildren; brother Michael and a sister Barbara; nieces Katie, Melanie, and Michelle and a nephew Justin; step-daughters Leslie and Denise and families; and his uncle Pete (Marion) Lopez; and numerous cousins.

A Rosary and Vigil service will be held on Wednesday, March 22 at 7 p.m. and the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday March 23 at 10 a.m. Both services will be held at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church in Worland with Rev. Sam Hayes officiating. Rite of Committal will follow at Riverview Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Worland.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association at 1280 S. Parker Road, Denver, CO 80231-2100.

Ethyle Lorraine Nicolen

GREYBULL — Ethyle Lorraine Nicolen, 85, of Greybull, died on Saturday March 18th at her granddaughter’s home in Greybull.

Ethyle was born on Sept. 27, 1920 in Seely, Wyo., the third of eleven children born to Clarence Lee and Miriam Louise (Bay) Bear. Ethyle grew up and attended schools at Seely and Hulette.

She married Rheo John “Nick” Nicolen on July 25, 1940 in Broadus, Mont. Ethyle was a homemaker and also helped her husband at many of his jobs. They had lived in several states including Michigan, New Mexico, Colorado, and South Dakota before returning to Wyoming.

The couple lived in various places in Wyoming, and following Rheo’s death in 1999, in Worland, she moved to Greybull to live with her granddaughter.

Ethyle enjoyed being around her family, crocheting, and made many afghans for family and friends. She loved to gamble, and made many trips to Deadwood, S.D. with her brother and sisters to visit family and to gamble. She loved to go camping, especially to Devil’s Tower every June over the Father’s Day weekend to attend the Bear Family Reunion.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband R. J. Nicolen; her four brothers Harold, Sherman, Ernest and Eldon Bear; and by four step-children John, June, Jeannie, and Doadie. She is survived by her son Les (Bonnie) Nicolen of Kinnear and her step-daughter Marna Eitel of Kaycee; grandchildren, Stormy (Bob) Southwell of Greybull, Delbert (Claudia) Eitel and Sissy (James) VinSant of Van Buren, Ariz., Della (Harvey) Long of Kaycee, Sandy Jacobs of Kalamazoo, Mich., Rod Cramer of Lawton, Mich., Ronnie Ray Canfield of Upton, Johnnie Jo Greer of Casper, Dennis Peterson of Rapid City, S.D., Jenna Peace of Wheatland, and Tami Cupples of El Dorado Ariz. She is also survived by brothers Charles (Mavis) Bear and Larry (Rose) Bear both of Worland and her sisters Betty (Jack) Carlton of Greybull, Meda Grosse of Belle Fourche, S.D., Ellen (Jim) Ethridge of Berthoud, Colo., and Sally (Don) Davies of Basin. In addition, she is survived by numerous great grandchildren, several great great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held on Saturday March 25th at 2:30 PM at the Seventh Day Adventist Church southwest of Greybull with Rev. Mike McMillan of the Grace Fellowship Church officiating. Burial of the ashes will take place at Riverview Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Worland.

Veile Mortuary of Worland is assisting the family with the funeral arrangements. Memorials may be made to the fund of the donor’s choice.

Thomas N. Hopkin

GREYBULL — Thomas N. Hopkin, 61, of Goldonna, La., passed away after a struggle with cancer on Saturday, March 18, 2006 at his residence.

Mr. Hopkin was born in Greybull on April 13, 1944 to Helen Mae Mills and Glen Shumway Hopkin. He graduated from Basin High School in 1962, joined the U.S. Army Corps in 1962 and was honorable discharged in 1965. Tom married Darlene E. Hamilton, the love of his life, on Sep. 3, 1966 in Basin. Tom worked for 39 years in the oil and gas industry, which took him from Alaska to the Rocky Mountains to the Gulf of Mexico and across the Atlantic Ocean to Egypt and back.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He was also a member of the Eagles, the Louisiana Thoroughbred Breeders Association, Louisiana Quarterhorse Breeders Association, AQHA and the Jockey Club.

He was a loving husband and a devoted father and grandfather. Tom was known to many as a true blue Wyoming cowboy. Many of his friends called him Yosemite Sam, because of his mustache and jovial laugh.

Tom was at home when he was surrounded by his family and friends. His greatest love was raising horses for all facets of the horse industry, but he really enjoyed horse racing the most. His goal was to one day run for the roses and stand in the winning circle at the Kentucky Derby. He may not have stood there, but he did get to stand in the winning circle with many horses he raised.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Zachary; and a brother, Dickey Hopkin.

He is survived by his wife Darlene; two daughters, Gabrielle Rustan and Danielle Hunt; one son, Jeffrey Hopkin; three sisters, Henrietta Marie (Hopkin) Flyr, Trudy M. Koster and Billie L. Deuschter; four brothers, Glen M. Hopkin, Terry Hopkin, Charles E. Hopkin and Rodney J. Hopkin; and six grandchildren, Shanielle, Jessica, Lyndsey, Alexis, Hunter and Ty.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 22, 2006 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Winnfield, La. with Bishop Loy Gaar officiating. A lunch for family and friends will be served, Monday, March 27, 2006 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Basin Greybull Ward.

Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Monday, March 27, at Mount View Cemetery in Basin.

Allen Lee “Butch” Schweighart

THERMOPOLIS — Allen Lee “Butch” Schweighart, 72, died Sunday, March 19, 2006, at Hot Springs Memorial Hospital in Thermopolis.

Allen was born in Gebo, May 18, 1933, to Charles and Wilhelmine Schweighart.

He was raised on the Schweighart Sheep Ranch on Cottonwood Creek. He attended grade school at the Schweighart School near the Schweighart Ranch and graduated from Washakie County High School.

He enlisted in the U. S. Air Force June 13, 1952. In June 1954, Allen was transferred to the 315th Air Division, 483rd Troop Carrier Wing, Headquarter Squadron at Ashiya Air Base, Ashiya Japan. Allen received an Honorable Discharge May 14, 1956. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nation Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Sharpshooter Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He received a final Top Secret Security Clearance and Atomic Energy Commission Security Clearance.

Mr. Schweighart returned to the Schweighart Ranch after being discharged. He married Elaine Thronburg on July 15, 1956. To this union were born three children, Jeff, Crystal and Karla.

Butch became employed with Atlantic Richfield Oil and Gas Company, living in Hamilton Dome for 12 years before moving to Thermopolis.

After 23 years with ARCO, Butch was hired as petroleum engineering technician in 1981 with the U.S.G.S. in Thermopolis. In 1983 he transferred to the Bureau of Land Management in Worland.

He received a Wyoming BLM employee award for superior performance in 1995 and retired in 1998.

He was involved in guiding for more than 30 years with different outfitters, most recently guiding for his son, Jeff, with Hot Springs Outfitting, Inc.

He was an associate member of the Cowboy Joe Club, and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the National Rifle Association. He served on the Thermopolis Centennial Committee and the Veterans Memorial Committee.

He enjoyed hunting, lake fishing, following professional bull riding and refurbishing antique furniture. Butch was an avid University of Wyoming fan.

Mr. Schweighart was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Elaine on November 13, 2005; two brothers, Fred and Herman (Shorty); and one sister, Marie (Sis) Pitt. He is survived by his children, Jeff of Powell; Crystal Shapiro of Stamford, Conn., and Karla (Alan) Pomeroy of Lovell; his twin sister, Alice (Pat) Beckley of Ten Sleep; two other sisters, Dorothy Brunk of Twin Falls, Ohio; and Myrt (Harlow) Davis, of Ten Sleep; two brothers, Carl (Pat) Schweighart of Worland, and Ed Schweighart of Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 25, 2006, at 10 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Thermopolis. Burial will follow at Monument Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made the VFW #2281, 302 Broadway, Thermopolis, WY 82443.

Betty Ilene Pirrie

WORLAND — Betty Ilene Pirrie, of Worland, died on April 13, 2006 in Springfield, Oregon.

She was born in Basin to Carl and Alta (McGarvin) Johnson. She attended schools in Basin and Thermopolis.

Betty married William E. “Bill” Pirrie on August 19, 1950 in Cody. He died on Feb. 12, 2004.

Following their marriage, the couple lived in Cody where he was a truck driver. In 1968, the family moved to Anchorage, Alaska, living there until 1974. They then returned to the area to live in Thermopolis for several years until moving to Worland in 1979.

Betty loved to sew. Easter was a favorite time for her as she always made her daughters new Easter dresses. She also made her husband’s western shirts. She loved to get her daughters up early before school so that she could fix their hair in ringlets.

The couple enjoyed traveling in their 5th wheel camper and going fishing.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and by her brother, Carl Johnson Jr. and by her sisters, Edna Pitt and Norma Jean Burgess. She is survived by her daughters, Linda (Mike) Thrapp of Eugene, Ore., Debra (Jeff) Simmons of Lafayette, Ind., and Pamela (David) Goetsch of Huntington Beach, Calif. She is also survived by nine grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren; her brothers, Vernon Johnson and Harold Johnson, of Thermopolis; and a sister, Peggy Lunt of Rock Springs.

Cremation has taken place in Oregon and the ashes will be returned to Worland for burial in Riverview Memorial Gardens Cemetery later this summer.

William Aymer “Bill” Strausborger

THERMOPOLIS — William Aymer “Bill” Strausborger, 94, died Thursday, April 20, 2006 at Canyon Hills Manor in Thermopolis.

The oldest of nine children, Mr. Strausborger was born June 30, 1911 in Denver, Colo., the son of Franklin and Cora (Williams) Strausborger. The family homesteaded in Moffitt County, where Bill worked on the farm and also on the railroad for a time.

He joined the Navy in 1942 and served as Master Machinist on the US Lancewood at Iwo Jima where he witnessed the raising of the U.S. Flag.

On July 20, 1943, he married Jean Wilson in Oakland, Calif. Following Mr. Strausborger’s discharge from the service in 1945, the couple resided in Eugene, Ore. for the next 36 years. Bill was a diesel mechanic for various logging companies for 10 years. From 1956 to 1976 he was employed by Pape Brothers Caterpillar until retirement. Mrs. Strausborger died in 1982. The following year Bill moved to Mesa, Ariz. where he met Mildred Olsen Dorn. They were married July 18, 1984 in Colby, Wis. The couple moved to Thermopolis in 1999 to be near Bill’s daughter.

A member of the Methodist Church, Bill was an avid reader. He enjoyed fixing things around the home.

In addition to both wives, he was preceded in death by a son, Franklin; three brothers, Leon, Raymond and Norman and two sisters, Ruth and Betty. Survivors include his daughter, Marilyn Strausborger of Thermopolis, one brother, Edwin of Eugene, Ore.; daughter-in-law, Carol of Vallejo, Calif.; two granddaughters, Stacy and Rebecca; and two sisters, Emma Greenwood of Gresham, Ore. and Doris VanValkenburg of San Leadro, Calif.

Memorial services will be held at a later date in Eugene, Ore, with inurnment in Rest Haven Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Senior Citizen Center or Friends of the Library.

Paul W. Shipley

EVANDALE, Ohio — Paul W. Shipley, formerly of Worland, died April 21, at the Lodge Care Center in Cincinnati, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Clara (Streett) Shipley. He is survived by his step-son, Reverend Dr. Jerry (Mary) Wortham; grandsons, Jay Wortham, John T. Wortham and granddaughter, Mary Beth Rutherford. He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 26, 11:30 a.m. at the Evendale Community Church in Evendale, Ohio. There will be a military service at Arlington Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Worland United Methodist Church.
