Paul F. Hedge

OSHKOSH, Wis. — Paul F. Hedge, 77, of Oshkosh, Wis., passed away in Appleton Nov. 20, 2006. He was born Nov. 19, 1929 in Lincoln, Neb., the son of Ivan and LaVada Hedge. He married Lois Snyder on July 31, 1951.

Following graduation from Doane College, Crete, Neb., in 1951, Paul began his career in the banking profession in Scottsbluff, Neb. In 1953, he began pursuing a masters in Music Education at Northern Colorado University in Greeley, Colo. Paul taught instrumental music 23 years in Nebraska, Colorado, South Dakota and Wyoming. While in South Dakota, he served as Vice President for two years of S.D. Bandmasters and two years as president. He also served on the South Dakota High School Activities Board for several years.

Rushmore Music Camp in the Black Hills was established by Paul and Lois in 1971, and is still held annually each August for junior high and high school band students. Over the years, thousands of students have attended this camp near Mt. Rushmore. Paul was honored for Distinguished Service to Music by the South Dakota Phi Beta Mu Band Director’s Organization in 1992, by his alma mater Doane College in 2001, and by South Dakota Music Educators Association in 2003.

In 1975, Paul and Lois purchased a music store in Powell, and added another Hedge Music in Worland in 1981. The Hedges were in the music store business for 21 years. Since retirement in 1996, Paul spent a great deal of time with his wife at his cabin in Spearfish Canyon in the Black Hills of South Dakota. He volunteered as Chairman of the Firewise Committee for the Spearfish Canyon Owner’s Association from 2001 to 2006.

Paul was active in civic affairs while a resident of Powell, where he and his wife lived for 32 years. He served as chairman of the Downtown Improvement Committee for a number of years, president of Kiwanis, many offices in the United Methodist Church, and a loyal member of the church choir. He was a long-time board member for the Cody-Powell Community Concert Association.

Above all, Paul loved his family and loved music. He especially loved to play his trumpet and taught music lessons to many young students. He continued to play his trumpet in municipal bands, community symphonies, and at church wherever he lived. Most recently, he played solos and with the Praise Band at Algoma Boulevard United Methodist Church in Oshkosh.

Paul is survived by his wife, Lois of Oshkosh, brother, Richard of Meade, Colo., son, Randy (Holly) Hedge of Oshkosh, five grandchildren, Stephanie, Carly, and Joshua Hedge of Oshkosh, Tyler Frederick of Worland, and Heidi Frederick of Tacoma, Wash. He is preceded in death by daughter, Catherine Jean (Dan) Frederick of Worland and his parents, Ivan and LaVada Hedge of Filley, Neb.

Memorial services will be held on Friday, Nov. 24, 2006 at 2 p.m. at Algoma Boulevard United Methodist Church in Oshkosh. Coffee/fellowship will be held following the service in Paine Hall in the church. In June of 2007, an additional memorial service will be held for friends at the family cabin in Spearfish Canyon, South Dakota.

A memorial fund has been established at Rushmore Music Camp. Gifts may be sent to Lois Hedge, 2360 Patriot Lane, Unit B, Oshkosh, WI 54904.

Herb A.G. Koch

WORLAND — Herb A.G. Koch, 92, died Nov. 6, 2006. His memorial service will be held on Friday, Nov. 24 at 11 a.m. at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in Worland. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall at the church.

Athel “Brad” Bradley

CASPER – Ten Sleep resident, Athel “Brad” Bradley, 80, passed away Nov. 19 at the Central Wyoming Hospice Home.

Mr. Bradley was born June 5, 1926 in Cullman, Ala., the son of Robert D. and Myrtle (James) Bradley.

He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was assigned to the Naval Mine Depot. He served on the USS AFDB-7 and the USS Thomas E. Fraser. He received his honorable discharge in 1947 at the rank of Seaman First Class.

He started working at the Texaco refinery in 1954 and worked there as a unit operator until his retirement in 1982. He married Carol Jean “Kaye” Sloan on July 27, 1957 in Jackson. In September of 2003 they moved to Ten Sleep. He enjoyed fly fishing, hunting, playing cards, all types of sports and gardening.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.

He is survived by his wife, Carol Jean “Kaye” Bradley of Ten Sleep; two sons, Dan (Gail) Bradley of Harvest, Ala. and Paul (Melanie) Bradley of Casper; a brother Rayburn (Sue) Bradley of Cullman, Ala.; a sister Lucille (Tommy) Schoenewald of Casper; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Nov. 24, 2006, 2 p.m. at the Newcomer Family Funeral Home in Casper with Pastor Gary Hans from Sunrise Baptist Church presiding. Burial will follow at the Wyoming Memorial Gardens in Casper. There will be a viewing from 11 a.m. until the beginning of the service Friday.

The family would appreciate flowers or memorials be sent to the Hodgkin’s Lymphoma Foundation and Research, 8800 Venice Blvd, Suite 207, Los Angeles, CA. 90034 or the Central Wyoming Hospice Program, 318 South Wilson, Casper, WY 82601.

Helen Marguerite Wright Carrell

CASPER — Former Worland resident Helen Marguerite Wright Carrell, 90, passed away Nov. 19 in Casper.

Helen was born in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada on January 2, 1916 to Albert H. and Violet Wright.

She was the eldest living child in her family, being preceded in death by two younger brothers. The family eventually moved to Montana settling in Billings when Helen was eight years of age. She graduated from Billings High School and attended business college.

In 1938 she married William O. Carrell in Billings, Mont. Together they pastored churches in Missoula, Mont. and Great Falls, Mont. before moving to Portland, Ore. to attend Bible College. Before settling in Casper in 1966, Bill and Helen lived in Worland for five years and from 1960-1966 they pastored the Church of God in Newcastle. From 1966-1968 they served as pastors of what is now Highland Park Community Church.

While living in Casper, Helen worked for E.H. Vering, CPA. Then for 10 years she worked for the NCSD at Kelly Walsh High School and East Junior High School. In retirement she volunteered at the Red Cross office and drove for Meals On Wheels. However, her first love was always for her Lord and the work of His church. A woman of deep faith she exemplified a Christ-like life in all she did and left a legacy of love and faith for her family.

She loved the Bible and her children and grandchildren relied on her knowledge and wisdom when questions of life arose.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband William after 57 years of marriage, her son Harold in 1967, her parents, sister Florence Hartley and brother Harold Wright.

She is survived by her daughter Marilyn (Harry) Smothers of Casper; sons Norman (Marcia) Carrell of Casper, Dean (Susan) Carrell of Worland and Clifford (Sharon) Carrell of Oshkosh, Wis.; a brother, Clifford Wright; 11 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Helen’s family is especially grateful to the wonderful nurses and aides at Central

Wyoming Hospice for the excellent care provided her in the final days of her life.

The Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. at Highland Park Community Church Nov. 25, 2006. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Central Wyoming Rescue Mission, Highland Park Community Church Missions or Central Wyoming Hospice.

Shelley T. Salinas

WORLAND – Worland resident, Shelley T. Salinas, 34, died Nov. 21, 2006 in Billings, Mont. at Billings Clinic following complications from surgery.

Shelley was born on Jan. 1, 1972 in Pine Ridge, S.D. a daughter of Felix and Elaine (Thunderbull) Salinas. The family moved to Worland in 1968 and Shelley graduated from Worland High School in 1991. During her school years, Shelley participated in junior high football, basketball, volleyball and high school basketball. She has participated in basketball, volleyball, softball, darts and billiard recreation leagues in Worland over the past few years.

She has been a very sociable person and loved being a part of her community.

Shelley enjoyed hunting and fishing with family and friends, taking walks, watching the sunset and looking at the stars. She loved her boys and a favorite activity was going to the hot springs. Holidays were a favorite time where she enjoyed decorating her home. Shelley was an enrolled member of the Oglala Lakota Sioux Tribe and her given Indian name was Mni Wachan Ekta Najin Win, which means “woman who stands at the ocean.”

She is preceded in death by her paternal grandparents and maternal grandfather.

She is survived by her sons, Curry and Kaleb Matthiesen of Worland, Parents Felix and Elaine Salinas of Worland, brothers Terrance Salinas of Billings, Robert and Lynn Murdoch Salinas of Worland, sisters Sheryl and Troy Garcia Salinas of Worland, aunts Betty Taylor, Shirley Campbell, Nancy Thunderbull, Wanda Weaver, Arlene Janis and Fidelfa Menchaca, uncles Leopoldo (Rosa) Salinas, Vince (Hilda) Salinas, Wendell Thunderbull and Everette Thunderbull, and many cousins.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, Nov. 27, 2006 at 11 a.m. at St. Albans Episcopal Church with Father Joe Galligan officiating. Burial will follow at Riverview Memorial Garden’s cemetery. A gathering for family and friends will be held Sunday, Nov. 26, from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Bryant Funeral Home. Memorial donations may be made to the St Albans Episcopal Church in care of Bryant Funeral Home PO Box 524 Worland. WY 82401.

Larry Eugene Bower

WORLAND — Larry Eugene Bower, 72, of Worland died at St. Vincent’s Healthcare in Billings, Mont. on Nov. 22, 2006.

Larry was born on March 28, 1934 in Mitchell, Neb. to Robert and Amelia (Dietz) Bower. He moved with his family to Lingle as a young boy and was raised and schooled at Lingle. He worked on farms while in school and graduated from Lingle High School in 1953. While in high school he was active in track, football, FFA, class plays and was an officer in the student council. Following graduation he worked for a lumberyard in Torrington for a couple of years.

Larry married his “sweetheart” Joann H. Keller in Lingle on Dec. 9, 1956.

In December 1956 he joined the U.S. Army and served in Korea. Following his discharge he went to work for the John Deere implement dealer at Gering, Neb. In 1961 he went to work farming with his father-in-law Harry Keller in Veteran. They formed a partnership and moved to Worland in 1966 where they farmed together on the Banjo Ranch until dissolving the partnership in 1984.

Larry then started farming with Palesk Farms and continued working for them until the present. He also worked in the winters for Holly Sugar, Mead & Sons, and for TranSystems.

He was active in the Washakie Beet Growers Association where he helped organize the annual banquet; was a two term President of the Washakie Farm Bureau; and was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Worland.

Larry’s hobbies included building hot rods: a V-8 tractor for tractor pulls and his purple Ford pickup; building model railroads and model airplanes; Christmas decoration for yards; and fishing with his grandkids.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, one daughter, and his father-in-law.

Larry is survived by his wife Joann Bower of Worland; sons Wayne (Anne) Bower of Boise, Ida. and Michael W. Bower of Azusa, Cali; his daughter Tami (Vince) Salzman of Worland; a brother Floyd (Idelle) Bower of Torrington; grandchildren Jace Salzman, Wade Bower, Shane Bower, Spencer Bower and Vicki Salzman; and a great grandson Taylor Bower.

The casket will be open at Veile Mortuary on Tuesday from 7:00pm to 8:30pm and at Zion Lutheran Church on Wed. from 8:30am until service time.

The funeral will be held on Wed. Nov. 29 at 10:30 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Worland with Dr. L. E. “Bud” Surles officiating. Burial will follow at Riverview Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Worland.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society in care of Connie Bowers – 316 South 21st St. – Worland, WY. 82401.

Jake L. Yakel

WORLAND — Jake L. Yakel, 82, of Worland, passed away at his home following a brief struggle with cancer.

He was born on Sept. 23, 1924 at Scottsbluff, Neb. a son of Jacob and Mary (Kaiser) Yakel.

He was raised and educated in Scottsbluff. Following his education he farmed for a few years before becoming a truck driver, hauling coal and corn from Wyoming. He then worked for Curry Chemical Co., an agricultural chemical and fertilizer firm, in Scottsbluff.

Jake married Ruby I. Specht on Jan. 26, 1947 in Scottsbluff. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in January.

In 1954 Curry Chemical transferred him to Worland. He later bought the company and operated it as PureGro for many years. He eventually sold it to Simplot, and then retired in 1992.

Jake enjoyed traveling to visit with his family, especially with his grandchildren. He enjoyed walking, and usually stopped to visit with his friends at the local coffee shops. He was a member of the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Worland.

He was preceded in death by his son Randy Yakel in 1997, and by one brother and four sisters.

Jake is survived by his wife Ruby Yakel of Worland; his daughter Brenda (Del) Jacober of Covington, Wash; his daughter-in-law Jane Yakel of Blacksburg, Va.; his grandchildren Cindi Battram of Puyallup, Wash., Kevin Jacober of Seattle, Wash., Demian Yakel of Blacksburg, Va, Jonah Yakel of Tucson, Ariz, and Stefan Yakel of New Orleans, La; and by six great-grandchildren.

He also is survived by his brother Dick Yakel of Scottsbluff; his sisters Katherine Welch, Katie Zier, Caroline Rexus, Rose (Paul) Bolzer, Florence Rau, Irene Loose, Alvina Kufeldt, and Norma (Don) Green all of Scottsbluff.

Cremation will take place, and a memorial service will be held on Saturday April 14th at 10:30 am at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Worland with Rev. Steve Couch officiating.

A memorial in his name has been established for a fund yet to be named. Contributions may be sent to the Pinnacle Bank at P.O. Box 789 – Worland, WY. 82401.

Patricia Jean Rice

BASIN — Patricia Jean Rice, 80, died Monday, April 23, 2007. She had been a resident at the Bonnie Bluejacket Memorial Nursing home between Basin and Greybull.

Patricia was born on June 13 in Big Timber, Mont. She was the daughter of Raymond “Pat” and Bessie (Hunt) McGraw.

From Big Timber, the family moved to Greybull where she lived for 10 years. The family then moved to Meeteetse when Patricia was 15. She graduated from Meeteetse High School in 1944.

She met Gene Rice in Meeteetse. They were married on Aug. 10, 1946 in Cody.

Patricia is preceded in death by two daughters, Marion Jean Rice, age 18 months and Margaret Katherine “Peggy” Rice Lowry in 1970.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Gene Rice of Basin; two daughters, Charlotte (Mark) Cheshier of Belgrade, Mont. and Angela (Dave) Tharp of Basin; seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Thursday April 26, 2007 at the Atwood Family Chapel in Basin from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. and on Friday, April 27, 2007 at the first Baptist Church in Basin from 9:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 27, 2007 at the First Baptist Church in Basin at 10 a.m. Pastor Kent Dempsey will be conducting the services. Burial will follow at the Meeteetse Cemetery in Meeteetse following the services at approximately 11:30 a.m.

Memorials will be received at Big Horn Federal Savings Bank, P.O. Box 471, Greybull, WY 82426.

Pearl Viola Jensen Reed

WORLAND — Pearl Viola Jensen Reed, 78, of Worland, passed away Tuesday, April 24, 2007 at Washakie Medical Center.

Pearl was born the Oct. 7, 1928 in Cody, the daughter of Einar and Agnes (Nelson) Jensen. She was raised on the South Fork of the Shoshone River, (Ishawooa) where she attended all eight grades in elementary school and had many fond memories of the country girl lifestyle. She then stayed with her grandmother, Augusta Blomquist Nelson, while she attended Cody High School.

She began her working career early, working after school in the telephone office. She attended Central Business College in Denver in 1946-47.

She worked for Husky Oil Company and Schlumberger, in Cody as well as many entrepreneurial ventures.

While working for Husky Oil, she met her future husband John Henry Reed. They were married November 7, 1948 in Cody. They were later sealed in the Logan Temple on October 12, 1954. They were blessed with four children.

In 1969 the family moved to Worland and purchased the Pawnee Motel. They later owned and operated the Town & Country and Maverick Motels, the Wortham’s Trailer Park, Worland Campground, several ranches and a bookstore.

Pearl was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and enjoyed serving in many capacities. She enjoyed her grandchildren, her bookstore, playing the piano, working on family history and visiting her many friends. In her later years she enjoyed reading to the residents at the Worland Healthcare Center.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father and her husband John.

Pearl left behind her children: Karen Durfee Lohof of Washington ,Utah; Mary Sue Younger of Salem, Utah; Berry (Ruth) of Worland; John (Kalani) of Salem, Utah; her brother Vernon Jensen, and sister Juanita Hill, both of Cody, and sister Alice Allen of Redding, Calif.; 20 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and a great number of nieces, nephews and fond cousins.

Services will be held Friday, April 27, at 11 a.m., at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Worland with Bishop Jack Stott officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to time of service. Burial will follow at the Riverview Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Memorials may be made in Pearl’s name to be donated to the local Boy Scout troops in Worland in care of Bryant Funeral Home PO Box 524, Worland, WY 82401.
