Cecil Williams Ray Bookout

1912-2002

Cecil Williams Ray Bookout, 90, of Wheatland died Saturday at the Platte County Memorial Hospital in Wheatland.

Mr. Bookout was born Aug. 11, 1912, in Wheatland.

Visitation will be held 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday and 8:30 to 10 a.m. at Platte Funeral Chapel.

Services will be held 10 a.m. Wedneday at the First Christian Church in Wheatland. Pastor Larry Benjaman and Minister Andy Gudahl will officiate.

Interment will be in Wheatland cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of Platte Funeral Chapel in Wheatland.

Mildred E. Dykeman

1908-2003

Mildred E. Dykeman, 94, of Cheyenne, died Saturday.

at Cheyenne Healthcare Center.

She was born Feb. 24, 1908 in LaPlata, Miss., and had lived here for 70 years.

Mrs. Dykeman was a teacher for 30 years in various schools throughout Wyoming. She was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa and Retired Teachers Association.

Mrs. Dykeman is survived by a son, Darald L. Dykeman of Cheyenne; a daughter, Charlsa Lee McGee of Fort Laramie; a brother, Kenneth Easley of Twin Falls, Idaho; a sister, Alma Baird of Cheyenne; three grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles L. Dykeman; her parents, Frank and Beaulah “Pearl” Easley; a brother, Herman Easley and two sisters, Dorothy Easley and Nellie Crews.

Services are pending through Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel of the Chimes.

Friends who wish may contribute to First Presbyterian Church or United Medical Center Hospice.

Orion D. Garcia

Orion D. Garcia, 21, of Cheyenne died Nov. 28 at University Hospital in Denver.

Funeral Mass will be 9 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Cheyenne with Fr. Vernon Clark as the celebrant.

A rosary and funeral liturgy will be held in Laramie at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Orion Garcia Memorial Fund in care of Renee Renteria and Angelica Garcia, P.O. Box 1427, Wellington, CO 80549.

James T. Griffith

1922-2002

James Troy Griffith, 80, of Cheyenne died Nov. 29 at Cheyenne Healthcare Center.

He was born July 10, 1922, in Sperry, Okla., and had lived here since 1951.

Mr. Griffith was a record supervisor for the Wyoming Highway Department for 29 years.

He served in the United States Army during World War II and the Korean conflict.

Mr. Griffith was a life member of VFW No. 343.

He is survived by his wife, Mamie Griffith of Cheyenne; a son, James Griffith Jr. of Marina, Calif.; two daughters, Doreen Anderson of Hayden, Colo., and Kyle-Ruth Cameron of Greeley, Colo.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Cynthia Griffith; six brothers, Clarence Griffith, Samuel Griffith, John Ralph Griffith, William Marvin Griffith, Melvin Griffith and Charles Griffith; two sisters, Ruth and Anne; and a grandchild.

Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel of the Chimes with the Rev. Janet Forbes officiating.

Cremation has taken place at Cheyenne Memorial Gardens.

Military honors were provided by the American Legion Honor Guard.

Friends may contribute to Boy Scouts of America or a charity of their choice.

William H. Smith Jr.

1931-2002

William H. Smith Jr., 71, of Cheyenne died Nov. 28 in Cheyenne after a 10-year battle with prostate cancer.

He was born July 18, 1931, in Hillsboro, Wis.

Mr. Smith was an insurance agent for State Farm Insurance.

He was in the United States Navy and a veteran of the Korean conflict.

Mr. Smith was a member of the Cheyenne Country Club, a former member of Lions Club and Elks Club and past president of theHotel and Motel Association.

He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Smith of Cheyenne, whom he married July 30, 1986, in Cheyenne; sons, William Brett Smith and Bruce Smith, both of Kimball, Neb., David Smith of Sidney, Neb., and stepson David Bush of Cheyenne; stepdaughters, Sarah Daigle of Slidell, La., Susan Utter of Lafayette, La., Carolyn Williams of Gilmer, Texas, and Jennifer Bush of Concord, N.C.; mother, Hester Brey of Lusk; six grandchildren; and nine stepgrandchildren.

Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his father, William H. Smith Sr., and a grandson.

A memorial service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Schrader Chapel with the Rev. David Stratton officiating.

Cremation is at Schrader’s Sunset Park Crematory.

Bill Kozas

1926-2002

Bill Kozas, 76, of Cheyenne died Dec. 5 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

He was born Aug. 27, 1926, in Green River and had lived here for 39 years.

Mr. Kozas worked for Union Pacific Railroad in Green River, was a Game Warden in Cokeville and Cheyenne and a watercraft supervisor for Wyoming Game and Fish.

He served in the United States Army during the Korean conflict.

Mr. Kozas was a member of the Greek Orthodox Church in Green River, Masonic Lodge, Shrine Club, VFW No. 1881, Laramie County Peace Officers and American Legion in Cokeville.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Kozas of Cheyenne, whom he married in May of 1957; four children, Spieros "Skip" Kozas of Cheyenne, Lydia Kozas-Blevens of Seattle, Keeley Kozas of Cheyenne and William "Billy" Kozas of Cheyenne; and a granddaughter, Stephanie Blevens of Seattle.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Spieros and Laura Kozas.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel of the Chimes with the Rev. Max Janzen officiating.

Interment will be in Cheyenne Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Jim Johnston, Bob Toulouse, Steve Meares, Steve Smith, Don Williams, Bill Anderson and Tony Jacoby.

Honorary pallbearers will be Clarence Dexter, Don Hogarth, Don Herber, Tom Hanson, Dennis Lee and Lloyd Flint.

Military honors will be provided by the American Legion Honor Guard.

Friends may contribute to the Shriners Children Hospital, Shriners Travel Fund or a charity of their choice.

Erma M. Shipley

1918-2002

Erma M. Shipley, 84, of Cheyenne died Dec. 2 at her home.

She was born March 26, 1918, in Gering, Neb., to Fred J. and Anna Marie (Eisenach) Lebsack.

In 1924, the family moved to Cheyenne. During her childhood years, she attended the Evangelical United Brethren Church and later attended Zion Congregational Church, which was built by her father and other German people.

She attended Johnson Grade School, McCormick Junior High and graduated from Central High School in 1937. She was a summer playground assistant and was awarded a scholarship to the University of Wyoming but was unable to attend.

She had a great affinity with children.

Mrs. Shipley was employed at the Union Pacific Railroad for 10 years after which her husband had overseas duties including Upper Heyford, England, Tripoli, Libya, North Africa, Newfoundland, Labrador and Kansas.

During these tours, Erma collected items of interest and clothing of each region.

Upon returning to the states, she began a series of lectures and presentations in the Cheyenne grade schools and civic organizations.

She was a Grey Lady during the war years, volunteered at the VA Medical Center, and member of the VFW Auxiliary. For several years, she and her assistants played Bingo monthly at the three nursing homes, providing treats and prizes to the patients. She was a very caring person.

Mrs. Shipley was a member of Church Women United, Extension Club for 52 years, Class of ’37 Lunch Group, past president of NCO Wives Club and Past Presidents Club.

She was a faithful member of Zion Congregational Church, past president for 12 years of the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia, which she and her brother, Dr. J. Robert Lebsack organized in 1984. She was also a member of the Moose Club, Union Pacific Oldtimers Club, Retirees Club, AARP, the Visually Impaired Group and groups too numerous to mention.

Mrs. Shipley is survived by a sister, Emma Deines of Cheyenne; four nieces, Dorothy (Kim) Sprecher of Cheyenne, Mary (Norman) Welle-Sims of Tillamook, Ore., Jennie (James) Kirton of Elgin, S.C., Pamela (Joe) Tapia of Glendale, Ariz.; seven nephews, Kenneth (Karen) Deines of Fort Collins, Colo., Paul (Nancy) Deines of Louisville, Kent., Fred (Judy) Lebsack III of Cheyenne, George (Ruth) Cook of Elgin, S.C., John (Ruth) Lebsack of Greeley, Colo., Gary (Barbara) Lebsack of Newcastle and Neil (Eugina) Lebsack of Hawaii; several great- nieces and nephews; and two great-great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl U. Shipley on Feb. 4,1983; her parents, Fred and Anna Lebsack; five brothers, Dr. J.R. Lebsack, Emil Lebsack, Fred J. Lebsack and two infant brothers; and a sister, Molly Cook.

Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel of the Chimes with the Rev. Elmer Wilhelm officiating.

Interment will be in Beth El cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Kaiser Cunningham, Johnnie Cunningham, Kenneth Deines, George Brady, Dwight Haught and Richard Wiederspahn.

Friends may contribute to Zion Congregational Church.

D. Darleen VanVelzor

1923-2002

D. Darleen VanVelzor, 79, of Cheyenne died Dec. 2 in Sandpoint Hospital, Sandpoint, Idaho.

She was born June 11, 1923, in Galeton, Colo., and had lived here since 1951.

Mrs. VanVelzor was co-owner of VanVelzor's Music Store and was administrative assistant to the executive secretary of the Wyoming State Medical Society and Blue Cross Blue Shield for 14 years.

She was a member of First Baptist Church since 1951 and was a Deaconess at First Baptist Church. She was a volunteer at United Medical Center-West, member of Zonta and Beta Sigma Phi and was co-chairman and secretary of Executive Club.

Mrs. VanVelzor is survived by two daughters, Sue King of Tempe, Ariz., and Jodi Reng of Worthington, Minn.; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James VanVelzor on Feb. 11, 2000; her parents, Walter and Edith Boyd; a brother, Walter Daniel Boyd; and a sister, Betty Jo Wight.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Brian High officiating.

Interment will be in Cheyenne Memorial Gardens.

Friends may contribute to First Baptist Church or United Medical Center Auxiliary.

Robert K. Allen

1934 – 2003

Robert Allen, 68, of Cheyenne died Feb. 9 at his residence.

He was born Aug. 14, 1934, to Pauline and Leonard Allen in Cheyenne.

Mr. Allen served in the Marines as a P.F.C. during the Korean conflict.

For the past six years he was an escort at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Cheyenne.

Mr. Allen was a member of American Legion Post 6.

He is survived by his wife Ramona Allen, whom he married Aug. 30, 1959, in Greeley, Colo; three sons, Raymond Allen, Randy Allen and John Allen, all of Cheyenne; a daughter, Renea Allen-Reinacher of Cheyenne; a brother, Warren Allen of National Park, N.J.; six grandchildren, Kelsey Allen, Brayden Allen, Rachel Allen-Reinacher, Tiffany Gutierrez-Allen, Hannah Allen and Morgen Allen, all of Cheyenne.

He was preceded in death by both of his parents and three brothers, Joe Allen, Jackie Allen and Tom Allen.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Veterans Administration Hospital Chapel with the Rev. Delbert Hansen officiating.

Military Honors will be provided by the American Legion Honor Guard. Cremation has already taken place. There will be no graveside services.

The family will receive friends after the service at Northwoods Presbyterian Church, 4723 Griffith Ave.

Patrick A. Kenny

1946-2003

Patrick J. Kenny, 56, of Laramie died Feb. 8 at United Medical Center in Cheyenne.

He was born Sept. 30, 1946, in Omaha, Neb., and lived in Laramie since 1978.

He was a Laramie businessman for the past 20 years and was widely known for his fair prices and excellent service. Prior to that he was a conductor and brakemen for Union Pacific Railroad in Omaha and Cheyenne for 21 years. He was an avid hiker and reader.

He married Mary Grabauskas on June 25, 1977, in Topeka, Kan.

He was a member of St. Laurence O’Toole Catholic Church in Laramie.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; two daughters, Maureen Borrow of Sacramento, Calif., and Bonnie Kenny of Laramie; sons, Patrick Kenny Jr., and Jerry Kenny, both of Laramie; brothers, Jerry Kenny of Seattle, Tim Kenny of Cheyenne, Steve Kenny of Neosho, Mo., Leo Kenny of Spokane, Wash., Matthew Kenny of Portland, Ore., Mark Kenny and Chris Kenny, both of Omaha; a sister, Colleen Kenny of Omaha; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jerome and Florence “Happy” Kenny.

Vigil for the Deceased will be 6 p.m. today at St. Laurence O’Toole Catholic Church in Laramie.

Liturgical mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Laurence O’Toole Catholic Church in Laramie with the Rev. Ray Moss officiating.

Interment will be at Green Hill cemetery in Laramie.

Pallbearers will be Patrick Kenny, Jerry Kenny, Bonnie Kenny, Christian Kenny, Leo Kenny and Chris Kenny.

Honorary pallbearers will be Jerry Kenny, Tim Kenny, Steve Kenny, Matthew Kenny, Mark Kenny, Chris Kenny, Robert Shaddy, and Robert and Marjorie Carlson.
