Walter Gilbert

1964-2003

Walter E. Gilbert, 39, of Cheyenne, died Oct. 4 at United Medical Center-West.

Mr. Gilbert was born Feb. 21, 1964, in Webb City, Mo., and had lived in Cheyenne for 16 years with prior residence in Joplin, Mo.

He was an opthomologist.

Mr. Gilbert is survived by two daughters, Shari Gilbert and Angi Gilbert, both of Cheyenne; his parents, Joe and Violet Gilbert of Cheyenne; a grandmother, Viva Brewer Whitehorn of Joplin; and a sister, Judy Taylor of Cheyenne.

The family will receive friends at Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel from 7 to 8 p.m. today. Cremation has taken place at Cheyenne Memorial Gardens.

Beverly D. Hovey

1932-2004

Beverly D. Hovey (Dawson), 71, of Cheyenne, passed away Feb. 1 at United Medical Center-West.

She was born Oct. 12, 1932, in Craig, Colo.

Following high school graduation, Beverly moved from Craig to Laramie, where she enrolled at the University of Wyoming. During her four years at the university, Beverly excelled in school. She was president of her sorority, Alpha Chi Omega, in which she attended the national conference as the representative from Wyoming in Banff, Alberta, Canada; and was active in the band (clarinet) that traveled to Jacksonville, Fla., when UW's football team played Washington & Lee in the 1951 Gator Bowl.

Beverly was active in sports, whether it was on the national, regional or local level. She was a mainstay at the local softball fields, where she was known as "Mom."

She married William W. (Bill) Hovey in Laramie on Jan. 15, 1956.

She was a member of Order of Eastern Star - Snowy Range Chapter, National Federation of Republican Women, Town & Country League, United Methodist Women, University of Wyoming Alumni Association and Oak Spokes. Besides her greatest accomplishment of taking care of her family, she took great pride and pleasure in working with the Wyoming State Legislature.

She is survived by a son, Keith of New York; a daughter, Lisa of Cheyenne; a son, Brad and his wife, Peggy, and grandchildren, Derek and Rhiannon, all of Castle Rock, Colo.; and a sister-in-law, Donna Beth Downer of Torrington.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Gilbert and Irene Dawson; her husband, Bill Hovey; and a brother-in-law, Howard I. Downer.

Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Schrader Chapel with the Rev. Delbert Hansen officiating.

Honorary pallbearers will be her many friends.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Schrader Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Cheyenne Animal Shelter or a favorite charity.

Merlin C. Hixenbaugh

1908-2004

Merlin Cecilia Hixenbaugh, 95, died Feb. 1 at her home in Douglas.

She was born July 28, 1908, in Carpenter, the daughter of William Francis and Della Minerva (Gutzler) McGee. She was reared and educated in Carpenter, graduating in 1925 from Carpenter High. She earned a teaching degree from the University of Wyoming. She was a teacher in the Carpenter - Cheyenne areas.

She was married to Verle D. "Jeff" Hixenbaugh on May 15, 1926, in Cheyenne. In earlier years, she was a cook at the Carbon County Hospital in Rawlins and at the Converse County Memorial Hospital in Douglas, where she retired. Following her husband's death, she lived at the Payne Plaza, and was very active at the Douglas Senior Citizens as a volunteer until her death.

She enjoyed crocheting, flowers and cooking. She was a member of the Assembly of God Church, where she was its oldest member.

She is survived by three children, Myrna Ammons of Casper, Eileen Vosler of Douglas and Bill Hixenbaugh of Laramie; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jeff, on March 22, 1984; a sister, Vivian Thompson; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Assembly of God Church in Douglas with the Rev. Dan Hickman officiating. Interment will be in the Douglas Park cemetery.

Family and friends may call from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Tammy Stephenson, Becky Vosler, Deshann Gorden, Kristy Green, Jeff Ammons and Mike Hixenbaugh.

Honorary pallbearers will be all of her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-great grandchildren.

William L. Garland

1943-2004

William L. "Bill" Garland, 60, of Cheyenne died Feb. 2 in Cheyenne.

He was born June 8, 1943, in Greybull and had lived here since 1973.

Mr. Garland served in the Navy during the Vietnam War.

He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Wyoming.

Mr. Garland owned Environmental Assessment Services, Inc.

He was an engineer and administrator of DEQ Water Quality Division for the State of Wyoming.

Mr. Garland is survived by his wife, Sharon Garland of Cheyenne whom he married May 1, 1982, in Cheyenne; three sons and daughters-in-law, Tim and Mary Garland of Boulevard, Calif., James and Mandie Garland of Cheyenne and Kevin and Becky Garland of Denver; a daughter, Chanda Garland of Cheyenne; his mother, Velma Garland-Bulbin of Basin; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Donna Garland and James Harnley of Bethesda, Md., and Wilma and Bill Harnden of Laramie; and four grandchildren, Kaydee Garland of Oklahoma, Jordan Garland of Cheyenne and Patrick Garland and Callie Garland, both of San Diego.

He was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Garland on Oct. 4, 2001; his father, Robert J. Garland and a brother, Thomas R. Garland.

Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel of the Chimes with the Rev. Gary Ruzicka officiating.

Cremation has taken place at Cheyenne Memorial Gardens.

Friends may contribute to a charity of their choice.

Carol A. Peterson

1945-2004

Carol A. "Punky" Edmondson Peterson, 59, of Cheyenne died March 30 at United Medical Center-West.

She was born March 26, 1945, in Lusk.

She was a van driver for Renzenberger.

She is survived by her companion, Randy Beach; two sons, Joshua Peterson of Gillette and William Scott Slack of Montana; a daughter, Melissa Harter of Gillette; a brother, Bill Edmondson of Casper; and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be in Lusk.

Linda Anne Combs

1949-2004

Linda Anne Combs, 54, of Cheyenne died March 30 at United Medical Center- West.

She was born May 21, 1949, in Boise, Idaho. She lived at the Wyoming State Training School in Lander for more than 30 years before moving to Cheyenne eight years ago.

Linda is survived by a sister, Joan Taucher of Bend, Ore.; a sister-in-law; an aunt; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Vivian Combs; and two brothers, Albert Combs and Howard "Chips" Combs.

Cremation has taken place at Cheyenne Memorial Gardens under the direction of Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel of the Chimes.

Memorial services will be at a later date at Magic City.

Marilyn V. Renner

1932-2004

Marilyn V. Renner, 71, of Cheyenne died March 31 in Cheyenne.

She was born June 14, 1932, in Miltona, Minn.

She was a homemaker.

She married Milton Renner on Sept. 18, 1954, in West Miltona, Minn.

She was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church and Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. She collected clothes and Campbell soup labels for the Navajo Evangelical Lutheran Mission School in Rocky Point, Ariz.

Mrs. Renner is survived by her husband, Milton Renner of Cheyenne; two sons, Rich Renner of Cheyenne and Steve Renner and his wife, Carolyn, of Rawlins; a daughter, Debbie Vilen and her husband, Brad, of San Marcos, Calif.; five grandchildren, Michael Fargo of San Marcos, Tyler and Tanner Renner of Cheyenne, Cody and Abigail Renner of Rawlins; and a sister, LuAnn Stenke of Monticello, Minn.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. today at Ascension Lutheran Church with the Rev. Stephanie Kopshe officiating.

Burial will be in Mountain View Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Rich Renner, Steve Renner, Tyler Renner, Tanner Renner, Michael Smith and Ron Thiel.

Honorary pallbearers will be Cody Renner and Michael Fargo.

Friends may contribute to Ascension Lutheran Church Organ Fund.

Cipriano Garcia

1931-2004

Cipriano "Cip" Garcia, 73, of Cheyenne died May 29 at United Medical Center-West.

He was born May 29, 1931, in Mora, N.M.

He was retired as a heavy equipment operator for the city of Cheyenne.

Mr. Garcia is survived by his wife of 55 years, Viola Garcia of Cheyenne; two sons, Richard Garcia of Prescott, Ariz., and Johnnie Garcia of Cheyenne; two brothers, Dan Garcia and Charlie Garcia, both of Cheyenne; three sisters, Martina Lucero, Pauline Pando and Eva Salazar, all of Cheyenne; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Garcia was preceded in death by his parents, Carlos and Carmelita Garcia; three brothers, Victor, Floyd and John Garcia; three sisters, Nea Garcia, Connie Jacoby and Della Herrera; and a grandson.

Funeral Liturgy will be 10 a.m. today at St. Joseph's Catholic Church with the Rev. Ray Moss as the celebrant. Interment will be in Olivet cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Michael Garcia, Richard Cipriano Garcia, Andrew Garcia, Richard Garcia, Johnnie Garcia, Walter Jacoby and Richard Jacoby.

Honorary pallbearers will be Raymond Garcia, Ernie Duran, Phil Carver, Jeff Pando and Joey Pando.

Harold M. Amfahr

1935-2004

Harold M. "Hal" Amfahr, 68, of Cheyenne died May 29 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

He was born Oct. 27, 1935, in Algona, Iowa.

He earned his undergraduate studies from the State University of Iowa and received his master's degree in human relations and supervision from Louisiana Tech University.

Mr. Amfahr retired as a lieutenant colonel in the Air Force. He served in Vietnam.

He was a member of American Legion Post No. 6, Knights of Columbus and the Airport Golf Club.

Mr. Amfahr is survived by his wife, Judith Amfahr of Cheyenne, whom he married Aug. 7, 1965; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Brent Amfahr of Denver and Scott and Kristi Amfahr of Cheyenne; a daughter and son-in-law, Melanie and Robert Austin of Laramie; a sister, Romana Thompson of Emmetsburg, Iowa; and five grandchildren, Tara Austin and Tabitha Austin, both of Laramie, and Zachary Amfahr, Tyler Amfahr and Nicole Amfahr, all of Cheyenne.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mathew and Pearl Amfahr.

Mass will be 1 p.m. today at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with the Rev. Thomas Cronkleton as the celebrant.

Cremation will take place at Cheyenne Memorial Gardens.

Honorary pallbearers will be Robert J. McHugh, Tony Hornstein, Bill Kello, Ken Young, Marv Knobb, Bob Waldea and Mickey Zanoni.

Military honors will be provided by the American Legion Honor Guard.

Services are under the direction of Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel of the Chimes.

John J. McNamee

1920-2004

John J. "Joe" McNamee, 83, died May 29 in Richland, Wash.

He was born in Tecumseh, Neb., on Sept. 7, 1920, the eldest son of John J. and Avis M'Liss McNamee. The family moved to the Pine Bluffs area in the late 1920s. He was a graduate of Pine Bluffs High.

He married Elizabeth "Betty" Bunch on Sept. 1, 1940, and settled in Pine Bluffs until entering the Army Air Corps, where he served in England during World War II.

After the war, the couple moved to Laramie, where he graduated from the University of Wyoming. After graduation, Joe worked as a petroleum geologist in Wyoming and Canada before retiring in Denver in 1986.

He is survived by his three children, Betty Jo Horton of Richland, Wash., Margaret Ann Metcalf of Charleston, S.C., and John B. McNamee of Houston, Texas; four grandchildren, Joel and Marisa Horton, Christian Metcalf and Ellen McNamee; and three brothers, Michael, Thomas and Stanley McNamee.

He is preceded in death by Betty, his wife of 50 years.

The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Pine Bluffs Methodist Church.
