Mary B. Henderson

1917-2004

Mary B. Henderson, 87, of Cheyenne died May 29 at Cheyenne Health Care Center.

She was born April 21, 1917, in Grand Forks, N.D., to Ralph A. and Margaret B. (Stump) Behrent.

Mrs. Henderson had worked as a clerk at the Laramie County Clerks Office.

She married the Rev. Harley A. Henderson on Aug. 25, 1940, in Seldon, Kan.

She was a former member of the Order of Eastern Star in Seldon.

She attended churches in the area.

Mrs. Henderson is survived by a daughter, Faith Whipple of Cheyenne; and two brothers, Robert V. Behrent of Denver and Paul A. Behrent of Wichita, Kan.

She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.

A funeral service will be 10 a.m. today at Schrader Chapel with the Rev. Douglas Carr officiating.

Burial will be in Memorial Gardens.

Friends may contribute to the American Cancer Society.

Michael R. Varland

1954-2004

Michael Ray Varland, 49, of Cheyenne died May 29 in Cheyenne.

He was born Aug. 11, 1954, in Cheyenne and had lived here all of his life.

Mr. Varland was the owner of Construction Specialists.

He served as a Navy Seal in Vietnam.

Mr. Varland was a member of First Congregational Church, Cheyenne Jackolopes and the National Rifle Association.

He is survived by his wife, Pamela May Varland of Cheyenne, whom he married June 24, 1978; two sons, Shawn Michael Varland and Chad Robert Varland, both of Cheyenne; a daughter, Amber Michelle Varland of Cheyenne; his mother, Helen Joyce Varland of Cheyenne; and two brothers, Patrick Lee Varland and Steven Amos Varland, both of Douglas.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ray Amos Varland on June 3, 1992.

Services will be 11 a.m. today at Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel of the Chimes with Dr. Clyde Kauffman officiating.

Military honors will be provided by the American Legion Honor Guard.

Pallbearers will be Dennis Parker, Ed Cochran, Steve Varland, Mark Child, Ron Hansen, Pat Varland, Don Berry and Bob Johnson.

Honorary pallbearers will be Red Dale Camping Friends, Construction Specialists employees, Joe Bennett, Chris Cowley, Al Weston and all of Mr. Varland's friends.

Friends may contribute to United Medical Center Hospice.

Andrew W. Bishop

1913-2004

Andrew W. "Bud" Bishop, 91, of Cheyenne died June 7 at United Medical Center - West.

He was born June 4, 1913, in St. Paul, Neb., and had lived here for 15 years.

Mr. Bishop was an explosives deliverer to seismograph crews.

He is survived by a son, John Bishop of Cheyenne; three grandchildren, Merrill Bishop of Loveland, Colo., Amy Bishop of Santa Monica, Calif., and Casey Adams of Peoria, Ariz.; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy P. Bishop on March 24, 1996; a daughter, Patricia Adams; his parents, Orloff and Hattie Bishop; three brothers, Dean Bishop, Delbert Bishop and Willard Bishop; and four sisters, Ruth Clintworth, Bernice Walker, Gertrude Shinn and Gladys Atwood.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel of the Chimes.

Interment will be in Cheyenne Memorial Gardens.

Friends may contribute to the American Heart Association.

Henry E. Garland

1914-2004

Henry E. Garland, 90, of Cheyenne died June 3 at Life Care Center.

He was born March 8, 1914, in San Antonio.

Mr. Garland was a conductor and brakeman for the Union Pacific Railroad from Aug. 21, 1942, to April 6, 1976.

He married Mae Alvin Atchison on Oct. 2, 1935, in Kimball, Neb.

Mr. Garland was in the Army. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and joined 20th Infantry Army Band in Denver. He came to Cheyenne to Fort D.A. Russell in 1933 and was discharged in February 1936.

Mr. Garland worked at the Veterans Hospital from November 1936 to July 1942.

He is survived by two daughters, Barbara J. Buell of Cheyenne and Carol Gilbert of Villa Park, Calif.; a half brother, Pat Kelley of Denver; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mae Garland; parents, Winston and Laura B. Earnest Garland; and two sisters, Margaret King and Laura Bell Grauer.

Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Lakeview cemetery with the Rev. Bob Garrard officiating.

Military honors will be provided by the American Legion Honor Guard.

Friends may contribute to Meals on Wheels, 2015 S. Greeley Highway, Cheyenne, WY 82007.

Jessica R. Torres

1980-2004

Jessica Rose Torres, 23, of Orange Park, Fla., died June 1 at St. Luke's Hospital in Jacksonville, Fla.

She was born July 10, 1980, in Pueblo, Colo., and had lived in Cheyenne for most of her life.

In 1998, Jessica graduated from Cheyenne's East High, where she competed in swimming and soccer.

She attended Holy Trinity Catholic Church and St. Mary's Cathedral.

Jessica was employed by Vystar Credit Union as a mortgage service representative.

She is survived by her husband, Maurice Andre Torres of Orange Park, whom she married Aug. 20, 2001, in Cheyenne; her newborn daughter, Jessica Elisa Torres of Orange Park; her parents, Rudy and Lupe Gallegos of Cheyenne; a sister and brother-in-law, Leslie and Curtis Burch of Cheyenne; two nieces, Marisa Burch and Jaelyn Burch, both of Cheyenne; a nephew, Curtis Burch Jr. of Cheyenne; her grandparents, Raymond and Rosie Gallegos of Cheyenne and Albert and Amy Robles of Wiley, Colo.; her in-laws, Lucio and Marie Torres of Cheyenne; her mother-in-law, Rosemary Torres of Cheyenne; her grandmother-in-law, Rose Korte of Cheyenne; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and close friends.

Funeral Liturgy will be 10:30 a.m. today at St. Mary's Cathedral with the Rev. Donal MacVeigh as the celebrant.

Interment will be in Olivet cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Phillip Herrera, Christopher Herrera, Robert Gallegos, John Robles, Anthony Arceneaux and Andre Arceneaux.

Honorary pallbearers will be Scott Gallegos, Nick Herrera, Curtis Burch and Ralph Robles.

Friends may contribute to the Jessica Elisa Torres Savings Fund, in care of F.E. Warren Federal Credit Union.

Lawrence E. Schieck

1924-2004

Lawrence E. "Larry" Schieck, 80, of Cheyenne died June 5 at United Medical Center-West.

He was born March 11, 1924, in Wiggins, Colo., and had lived here since 1946.

Mr. Schieck served in the Army in Europe during World War II; he was recalled during the Korean conflict.

He was an operator at the refinery for 37 years; he retired in 1985.

Mr. Schieck was president of OCAW Local Union and chairman of Workman's Committee. He was chairman of Laramie County Democratic Central Committee for 2« terms. He was a member of VFW No. 1881 and American Legion Post No. 6.

Mr. Schieck is survived by his wife, Connie J. Schieck of Cheyenne, whom he married Oct. 30, 1975; three daughters and two sons-in-law, April and Mike Kitzberger of Romeoville, Ill., Crystal and Harold Nelson of Phoenix and Jeri J. Sandlian of Cheyenne; a son, Rik Piscitella of Lander; a sister, Jean Meisberger of East Windsor, N.J.; two sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law, Beth Schieck of Cheyenne and Bob and Skip Olson of Canon City, Colo.; three grandchildren, Trista Hobbs of Bolingbrook, Ill., Tucker Jones of of Easton, Md., and Jessica Wetherbee-Dahl of Suffolk, Va.; and two great-grandchildren, Chase Hobbs of Bolingbrook and Isabelle Jones of Easton.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Tyra Wade; his parents, Emiel and Vivian Schieck; and eight brothers and sisters.

Arrangements are pending through Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel of the Chimes.

Military honors will be provided by the American Legion Honor Guard.

Friends may contribute to a charity of their choice.

Louis G. Mandis

1917-2004

Louis G. Mandis (Mantis), 87, of Cheyenne died June 5 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

He was born April 23, 1917, in Cheyenne to Constantinos (Gus) and Georgia Grivas Mandis. His father was born in Greece in 1875, came to Wyoming in 1903 and worked on the Union Pacific Railroad. He died in 1919 during the flu epidemic. His mother was born in Greece in 1875 and arrived in the United States in 1910. She died in 1931.

After his mother's death, Louis was raised by his two uncles, Nick Grivas and Argus Mantis.

He married Ruth Hassed in 1939.

Louis was drafted into the Army in 1942. He served in Europe, landing on Omaha Beach in June 1944 and was wounded July 30, 1944. Upon his return to the 35th Division, he fought in the Battle of the Bulge under Gen. George Patton. He returned to the United States in August 1945 with the rank of staff sergeant. Louis was awarded two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star for his service.

After the war, Louis lived in Denver. Upon the death of his wife in 1947, he returned to Cheyenne. He married Betty Connolly in 1952.

The family moved to Oklahoma, where Louis worked as an insurance agent for Benefit Trust Life Insurance Company. He was later transferred to Amarillo, Texas, where the family lived for 10 years. They moved to Minnesota, where Louis served as a manager for Bankers Life and Casualty. After retiring from Bankers Life and Casualty, they returned to Cheyenne, where Louis was a claims investigator for the Wyoming State Insurance Department; he retired eight years later.

Louis was a member of Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, Masonic Order No. 1330 in Amarillo, Yorkrite, Shrine Legion of Honor, American Legion Post No. 6, VFW No. 1881, AARP and the YMCA.

He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Betty Mandis of Cheyenne; a daughter and son-in-law, Georgia Mandis Haynes (Steve Haynes) of Idaho Falls, Idaho; a son, Nick Mandis of Casper; two granddaughters and a grandson-in-law, Nicole Haynes McCoy (Sean McCoy) of Logan, Utah, and Kimberly Mandis of Minneapolis; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, JoAnn and Harold Baker of Cheyenne; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Athena Papedo.

A service will be 2 p.m. today at Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church with the Revs. Gabriel Nicholas and Peter Harrison officiating.

Interment will be in Cheyenne Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Nick Kalokathis, Nick Mirich, Lee Galeotos, Michael Heckman, Kirk McKinney and John Pike.

Military honors will be provided by the American Legion Honor Guard.

Friends may contribute to the Shriner Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City.

Margaret M. Collins

1905-2004

Margaret MacGillivray Collins, 98, of Cheyenne died May 30 at United Medical Center-West.

She was born Sept. 1, 1905, in Terry, S.D., and had lived here since 1961.

Mrs. Collins was an office clerk at Equitable Insurance.

She was a member of St. Mary's Cathedral.

Mrs. Collins is survived by two nieces, Mary Jo Morandin and Celeste LeVeque, both of Cheyenne; and seven great-nieces and great-nephews, the Rev. James Schumacher of Laramie, Mary Hoerner of Farmington, N.M., John Schumacher of Astoria, N.Y., William Schumacher of New York City, Daniel Schumacher of Seattle, Stella LeVeque of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Ryan Schneider of Cheyenne.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Allan and Margaret MacGillivray; a brother, William MacGillivray; a sister, Mary LeVeque; and a niece, Margaret Schumacher.

Mass will be 10:30 a.m. today at St. Mary's Cathedral with the Rev. James Schumacher as the celebrant.

Cremation has taken place at Cheyenne Memorial Gardens.

Friends may contribute to the Cheyenne Animal Shelter.

Noice R. Grigsby Jr.

1925-2004

Noice R. Grigsby Jr., 79, of Scottsbluff, Neb., died June 5 at his home.

He was born May 27, 1925 in Cheyenne to Noice R. Sr. & Eva L. Grigsby.

He graduated from Cheyenne High School in May 1943. Mr. Grigsby served in the Army in Europe during World War II. He received an honorable discharge in 1946 from the U.S. Army. Noice was employed with the Fleischeli Studebaker garage for several years and eventually owned the Studebaker franchise. Also, worked for Walton Ford Motor Company. He enjoyed calf roping, competed in Cheyenne Frontier Days, and was associated with the former Don Kensinger. In 1966, he began a career with Cannon Brothers Ford & Toyota in Scottsbluff where he was the car and truck manager. He worked part time for Team Chevrolet for the past two years. He married Lorraine Grigsby of Cheyenne in 1951 and had one son, Gary Grigsby. He then married Rita Wold April 22, 1969.

Noice was an avid golfer, Past President of the Panhandle Shrine Club & a member of Robert W. Furnas Lodge 265AF & AM.

He is survived by his wife, Rita, son and daughter-in-law: Gary and Marca Grigsby of Cheyenne, sister, Barbara Cenedese of Cheyenne; nieces and their spouses: Tammy and Tom Nowak, Stacy Cenedese, Karen and Dennis Bell, all of Cheyenne; nephew: Mark and Cindy Teague of Georgia; step children; great nieces and nephews, Bailey and Brandon Nowak, Jessica Cenedese, Dennis, Brian & Nick Bell of Cheyenne, Heather, Stephen & Heidi Teague of Georgia and great-great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Noice Sr. & Eva Grigsby; nephew, Nick "Scott" Cenedese; and brother-in-law, Dominic "Nick" Cenedese.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Dugan Kramer Chapel in Scottsbluff. Interment will be in Fairview cemetery & military honors will be provided by Admiral Dewey Post 1681.
