Bessie F. Harrison

1922-2006

Bessie Ferro Harrison died at her Cheyenne home of 57 years surrounded by family on the evening of June 28, which is anniversary of the birth of her sister, Annette Callaghan.

She was 84 years old, and was born on Valentine's Day, Feb. 14, 1922, to Sicilian immigrants Joseph Ferro and Josephine (Lipari) Ferro at their Cheyenne home, then on 16th Street.

Her premature birth marked the beginning of a lifetime of always being a hard worker; busy and a little impatient, except for taking time for people, for whom she always had more than enough time. She attended Cheyenne St. Marys school and graduated from high school with an A average a year early. She was awarded for academic excellence a full tuition scholarship to college by the sisters teaching at St. Mary's, but was unable to attend college because she felt that she had family responsibilities. Instead of college, she attended beauty school in Cheyenne and became a cosmetologist working for others for several years until she opened her own shop. For over 30 years, she operated a beauty shop from her home on 21st Street until retirement. As an example of her dedication to others, she would often be asked or volunteer as a final gesture to style the hair of her deceased customers to make sure their final hairdo was as close as possible to the way she did it while they were alive.

On April 15, 1948, Bessie married Gerald L. Harrison in a small, intimate ceremony in what was then Bishop's Chapel of St. Mary's Cathedral. It was a happy and enduring marriage in good times and in bad. She enjoyed 41 years of marriage, until her husband's death in 1989. She devotedly cared for her husband in his last illness and their love for each other grew to the end.

Like her Sicilian father, she enjoyed gardening and had a green thumb for the many flowers with which her garden bloomed. After her husband's death, her daily life included Mass, Communion and prayer of the Rosary. Her devotion to the Rosary included the making of one or more rosaries each day for Catholic missions, penitentiary inmates, and many others until she had completed nearly 4,000 rosaries when she finished her last rosary in January of this year.

Excellent at sewing, knitting and crochet, she made most of her own clothing and made many quilts and baby blankets for others. She knitted and crocheted numerous sweaters, socks, hats, mittens, gloves, scarves and other items, almost all of which she gave away.

She and her husband had one son, Fred Harrison and she adopted as her own daughter, Fred's wife Lorie. She also adopted her many nieces as her own special daughters.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother; sisters Mary Ferro and Annette Callaghan.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law of Rawlins; granddaughters Kimberly Harrison, Kathryn Harrison and Jane Harrison; one grandson, Jared Harrison and his wife Misty; and two great-grandchildren. She is also survived by sisters, Lillian Rusk of Cheyenne and Josephine Capozzo of Michigan and many nieces and nephews.

Bessie lived her life quietly, simply and humbly serving others. She always saw Christ's image in other people. She lived by example, and was never preachy or pushy in espousing her own deeply held beliefs. In her final illness, stricken with cancer, she accepted God's will for her with dignity and grace. Her suffering became a prayer for others in imitation of Christ's passion. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated by the Rev. Gary Ruzicka at 1 p.m. on Monday at St. Mary's Cathedral.

A Rosary will be prayed 4 p.m. Sunday at the Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel of the Chimes.

Pallbearers are Henry Rusk, Tom Rusk and Kevin Scott of Cheyenne, Joseph G. Harrison of Longmont, Colo., James Herrold of Laramie, and James Laux of Sinclair.

Gifts may be made to St. Mary's Cathedral in honor of Mrs. Bessie F. Harrison.

Don was becoming a volunteer, in his spare time, to help victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. He was also studying to become a member of, and to be baptized in, the Catholic Church.
