Stanley E. Birt

1923-2006

Stanley E. Birt, 82, of Arizona City, Ariz., died at home Sept. 18.

He was born Dec. 23, 1923, to Alfred and Olive (Bader) Birt.

Mr. Birt had been residing in Arizona for more than 20 years. Stanley was in the U.S. Navy during WWII, was a member of the Evangelical United Methodist Church in Arizona City, Arizona City Moose Lodge Post No. 1038 and loved his dogs, motorcycling and RVing.

Stan leaves behind his wife, Karen; two sons, Trent Birt of Sacramento, Calif., and Roy Birt of Wheatland; two step-sons, Sean Foy of Yuma, Ariz., and Patrick Foy of Phoenix; two daughters, Gerry DeVille of Phoenix, and Jackie Benson of Montrose, Colo.; one step-daughter, Kirsten Hoffmeister of Ruckersville, Va.; one sister, Phyllis Behrends of Cheyenne; 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Schrader Funeral Home. Graveside Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Pine Bluffs cemetery.

Military Honors will be provided by American Legion Honor Guard.

Dawn R. Kelley

1964-2006

Dawn René Kelley, 42, of Cheyenne died Sept. 14 at home with her family at her side after a long struggle with cancer.

She was born July 10, 1964, in Cheyenne and had lived here all of her life.

Dawn graduated from Cheyenne's East High in 1982. She earned an associate's degree at Tyler Junior College in Tyler, Texas. Returning to Cheyenne, her professional career included 14 years at Wyoming State Department of Criminal Investigation. Most recently, Dawn worked with the Boys & Girls Club of Cheyenne, where her efforts had a positive impact for hundreds of children in the community and allowed her to fulfill a dream of work that would truly make a difference.

Dawn was creative, energetic, gentle and kind-hearted. She loved butterflies and enjoyed planting flowers and caring for her landscape. Dawn will be missed especially for her sense of humor, her inquisitive nature about people, her passions for music and for sharing time with friends and family.

Dawn is survived by her son, Jesse James Ellis; her mother, Linda Kelley; her father, Gary Kelley; her brothers, Matthew Kelley and David Kelley and his partner, Kimberly Garton; her grandparents, Maj. Aus. Ret. Carl and Marcia Wake; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews; and her life-long friend, Rebecca Bayne.

The memorial service will be 3 p.m. Saturday at the Berean Church, 5716 Powderhouse Road.

Cremation has taken place at Cheyenne Memorial Gardens under the direction of Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel of the Chimes.

In lieu of flowers, friends may contribute to a fund (Jesse Ellis Memorial Fund in Memory of Dawn Kelley), 5002 Linden Way, Cheyenne, WY 82009.

Raymond E. Gallegos

1923-2006

Raymond E. Gallegos, 83, of Cheyenne died Sept. 15 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

He was born Feb. 20, 1923, in Ricardo, N.M., and had lived here since 1999 with prior residence in Lamar, Colo.

Raymond served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a prisoner of war, held at a camp in Merseburg, Germany. He was the plant manager for Chreaghe Packing in Lamar and a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus 4th Degree, and past Commander of the Lamar VFW.

Mr. Gallegos is survived by his wife, Rosie Gallegos of Cheyenne, whom he married April 12, 1947, in Raton, N.M.; two sons, Rudy Gallegos of Cheyenne and Robert Gallegos of Grand Junction, Colo.; a sister, Emelia Franco of Lamar; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Juan and Teresa Gallegos; four brothers, Monico, Jack, Tony and Pete Gallegos; three sisters, Benny Abitia, Martha Kimball and Jenny Sanchez; and two grandchildren.

Vigil for the Deceased will be 7 p.m. today at Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel of the Chimes.

Funeral Liturgy will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with the Rev. Tom Cronkleton as the celebrant.

Interment will follow at Olivet cemetery.

Casket bearers are Curtis Burch, Scott Gallegos, Richard Jimenez Jr., Paul Jimenez Jr., James Abitia and Luis Robles. Honorary pallbearers will be Jess Ramirez, Albert Robles, Robert Jimenez Jr., Nick Sena Jr., Charles Sena, Pete Jimenez, Richard Kimbal, Andre Torres, Alvin Robles, and Rudy Herrera.

Military honors will be provided by the American Legion Honor Guard.

George M. Long

1929-2006

George M. Long, 77, of Cheyenne went home to be with our Heavenly Father on Sept. 19 in Cheyenne.

He was born April 28, 1929 in Nelson, Neb., the son of Tom and Hazel (Snyder) Long.

George attended school in Pine Bluffs, graduating in 1948. He enlisted in the United States Army and served in the Korean Conflict as a sergeant. He met his wife, Arlene "Neva" DeFreece, in Kimball, Neb. They were married in Kimball on Nov. 28, 1953.

They had four girls, Cynthia L., Kathleen S., Janet A., and Sandra K.

George was a line set operator for the newpapers in Kimball and Cheyenne, but his real passion was flying. He taught many individuals how to fly. He earned his pilots license before he earned his driver's license. One of his delights was taking his daughters for airplane rides.

He is survived by and loved dearly by his four daughters and son-in-laws, Brad and Cyndi Dreier of Cheyenne, Ted and Kathy Brown of Littleton, Colo., Mike and Janet Farrar of Cheyenne, and Michael and Sandy McInerney of Cheyenne; his grandchildren, Zachary Westlake of Breckenridge, Colo., Kasey Westlake of Cheyenne, Andrea and Nicholas Brown, both of Littleton, and Molly and Tyler Farrar, both of Cheyenne; two brothers, Thomas Lee Long of Kelso, Wash., and Dewey Long of Cheyenne; one sister, Patricia Shandera of Cheyenne; and his special friend and love, Peggy West of Kimball.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Arlene "Neva" Long, on Dec. 5, 1977; his parents, Thomas and Hazel Long; and his sister, Donna Mae Schimmel.

Visitation will be from 12 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Thursday, at Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel.

Cremation will follow at Cheyenne Memorial Gardens.

Burial of his urn will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Pine Bluffs cemetery.

A Celebration of His Life will be 2 p.m. Friday at Calvary Chapel with Pastor Tim Liddle officiating.

Friends may contribute to Meals on Wheels of Cheyenne and Pine Bluffs.

John P. Chocas

1924-2006

John P. Chocas, 82, of Cheyenne died Sept. 15 at United Medical Center-West.

He was born March 9, 1924, in Cheyenne.

Mr. Chocas served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II as a B-17 Flying Fortess togglier and gunner.

He was a senior master sergeant for the Wyoming Air National Guard, where he applied his technical skills for more than 30 years before retiring in 1977.

Mr. Chocas was a member of Sts. Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church, Masonic Lodge No. 11, Korein Shrine Center, Cheyenne Shrine Club and Cheyenne Optimist Club.

He is survived by two brothers, Jim Chocas of Cheyenne and Gust Chocas of Middleton, Wis.; a sister, Jennie Chocas of Cheyenne; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Nick Chocas, Tom Chocas, Alex Chocas and Bill Chocas; and two sisters, Doris Slife and Argie Markos.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Sts. Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church with the Father George Gartelos officiating.

Trisagion service will be at 6:30 p.m. today at Schrader Chapel.

Pallbearers will be Greg Chocas, Andy Markos, Zachary David, Steve Meares, Bill Sherman and Richard Moody.

Friends may contribute to the Shriner Hospital for Children, Fairfax Road and Virginia Street, Salt Lake City, UT 84103; Cheyenne Optimist Club or Sts. Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church.

Richard A. Patterson II

1925-2006

Richard Alexander "Dick" Patterson, II, 80, died Sept. 15 at Untied Medical Center-West in Cheyenne.

Mr. Patterson was born Nov. 29, 1925, in Miami Beach, Fla., the son of Richard A. and Louise (Stimson) Patterson.

He attended schools in Cheyenne and was drafted into the United States Army in the middle of his senior year in high school.

During World War II, Mr. Patterson served in the U.S. Army with the 526th Corp of Engineers. After being released from the service, he attended the University of Wyoming and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism. Most of his business life was devoted to sales.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Cheyenne. He was also a member of Kiwanis Club of Cheyenne, Cheyenne Frontier Days Volunteer, Founding Patron of Cheyenne Frontier Days Old West Museum, Heels, Mayor's Council for People with Disabilities, Governor's Council for Elimination of Architectural Barriers, Wyoming Easter Seal Society, Northern Wyoming Easter Seal Society, Wyoming Cystic Fibrosis Association, Magic City Enterprises, Future Business Leaders of America, Sweetwater County Mounted Sheriff's Posse, ROTC and Jaycees. On Dec. 13, 2005, Cheyenne Mayor Jack Spiker proclaimed the day as Richard "Dick" Patterson Day.

Dick loved music, photography, the outdoors and most of all he enjoyed life.

Mr. Patterson is survived by one son, Rick Patterson and his wife, Sandy of Firestone, Colo.; two daughters, Kim Mill and her husband, Bill of Cheyenne, and Donnica Jones of San Diego; one stepbrother, Paul Hallowell of Alameda, Calif.; three grandchildren; and two cousins.

The funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at the East Lincolnway Chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with Bishop Michael Butterfield officiating. Interment will be in Lakeview cemetery.

Military honors will be provided by American Legion Honor Guard.

Dorothy L. Worth

1923-2006

Dorothy L. Worth, 83, of Cheyenne died Sept. 5 at United Medical Center-West.

She was born May 12, 1923 in Horton, Kan.

She was a clerk for the federal government.

She married Gerald Worth on March 28, 1942 in Manhattan, Kan.

Mrs. Worth was a member of First United Methodist Church, Women's Club, Methodist Women's Organization, VFW Auxiliary, Oddfellows Auxiliary, Rebekah's and Navy Mothers.

She is survived by three sons, Raymond Stanley Worth of Layton, Utah, Larry Gene Worth of Ft. Morgan, Colo., and Gary William Worth of Federal Heights, Colo.; a daughter, Sharon Lee Gilbert of Federal Heights; three sisters, Betty Hamilton of Las Vegas, Nev., Judy Nekuda of Manhattan, Kan., and Alice Chasman of Florida; four grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Worth; parents, Joseph and Thelma Noel; and a brother, Donald E. Noel.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Aspen Wind Assisted Living Community, 4010 N. College Dr., with the Rev. Nadine Korhonen officiating.

Cremation Schrader's Sunset Park Crematory.

Kenneth M. Koski

1950-2006

The funeral for Ken Koski, 56, the Wyoming state public defender, will be 10:30 a.m. today at St. Mary's Cathedral in Cheyenne with the Rev. Gary Ruzicka officiating. Interment of the urn will be in Olivet cemetery.

Kenneth Michael (Ken) Koski was born Sept. 6, 1950, to Michael and Jean (Goodson) Koski, in Hot Springs, S.D. He died Sept. 6, pursuing a passion of backpacking in the Wind River Mountains.

Ken attended school in Newcastle, graduating in 1968. He attended Casper College, receiving an associate degree in 1970. He then attended the University of Wyoming, graduating in 1972 with a Bachelor of Arts in German. After graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps.

He met his wife, Cheryl (Balin), while stationed at Camp LeJeune in North Carolina in August of 1973.

While in the service, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Marksman Rifle Badge and Marksman Pistol Badge.

He was discharged from active duty, Aug. 15, 1975. He also served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve at Buckley Air Force Base, Colo., and eventually was separated from service and obtained the highest rank of major.

He married Cheryl Lynn Balin in West Springfield, Mass., on July 26, 1975. He returned to the University of Wyoming and obtained a Juris Doctorate degree in May 1979 and was admitted to the Wyoming State Bar on Sept. 6, 1979.

After graduating from law school, the family moved to Powell, where Ken served as a law clerk before opening a private law practice and becoming a part-time public defender. In 1995, Ken accepted the position of deputy state public defender and moved with his family to Cheyenne. He was appointed state public defender in 2000, and served in that capacity until his death.

Ken touched many lives with all the interests he had and passions he pursued. He became involved in scouting at a young age and continued to be active by becoming a scout leader in Laramie and then Powell. He always had a tremendous love for the outdoors and continued to pursue this passion throughout his life. Specifically, he tried to impart this love of leisure pursuit to family and friends through frequent Wind River backpacking trips.

He was an avid reader and collected many books on Wyoming. Later on he developed an interest in World War II, specifically his father's 41st Calvary Unit, in which he researched and coordinated meetings among veterans.

From his daily breakfast at the Driftwood to meetings with clients, Ken had a way of meeting and befriending people through all walks of life. He was very generous with his time and loved to promote the state of Wyoming every chance he got. He particularly enjoyed giving personal tours of government buildings in Cheyenne.

In addition to his wife, Cheryl, Ken is survived by his children, Kristie of Berkeley, Calif., Kerri (Adam) Powell, Kris and Katie of Cheyenne; brothers, Kirt of Casper, Keith of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Steve of Wheatland; sisters, Karen Koski of Aurora, Colo., DeeDee Howard, of Colorado Springs and Cindy Goussard of Franktown, Colo.; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Ken Koski Benefit Memorial c/o First National Bank of Pinedale, 61 E. Pine St., Pinedale, WY 82941, with all proceeds going to Wyoming Search and Rescue organizations.

Cremation has taken place at Schrader's Sunset Park Crematory.

Bucky R. McClain

1978-2006

Bucky R. McClain, 27, of Wheatland, died Sept. 14 at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff, Neb.

Bucky was born Dec. 23, 1978, in Wheatland, the son of Cynthia L. (Lipps) and Russell E. McClain. Bucky worked as a mechanic and drove a truck, working at Laramie Peak Ford, Shepard Farms, Double T Trucking and leased on with Americo Carriers. On May 15, he married Patrica S. Crichton in Wheatland. He enjoyed fishing, model trucks, and his children.

He is survived by his wife, Patty McClain of Wheatland; parents, Russell McClain and Cynthia Moore both of Wheatland; six children, Austin McClain, Jordan McClain, Hunter McClain, Alisa McClain, David McClain and Brandon Kline all of Wheatland; a sister, Jennifer Lipps of Seattle, Wash.; brother, Sammy McClain of Wheatland; a step-sister, Melissa Weber of College Station, Texas; two step-brothers, Steven Douglass of Douglas and James Douglass of Wheatland; paternal grandmother, Patricia McClain of Wheatland; maternal grandparents, Ray and Delores Lipps of Casper; and step-grandparents, James and Joan Williams of Wheatland.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Robbin A. McClain on June 6, 2000 and his paternal grandfather, Robert McClain.

Funeral services for Bucky were conducted Tuesday at First Christian Church in Wheatland, with the Rev. Andy Gudahl officiating. Interment was in the Wheatland cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers were Mike McClain, Bobby McClain, Russell McClain, Roy Cook, Olen Jameson, and Glenn Portwood. Honorary pallbearers were Steven Douglass, James Douglass, Sammy McClain, Jim Williams, and Carl Meier.

Memorials to the Bucky McClain Memorial Fund, in care of First State Bank, P.O. Box 39, Wheatland, WY 82201 for his children, would be appreciated by the family.

June K. Schuck

1926-2006

June Krentz Schuck, 80, died Sept. 10 from Alzheimer's.

She was born April 18, 1926, in Bellevue, Neb.

She lived in Cheyenne and was active in all school sports, music and girl scouting.

She graduated from Cheyenne High School and attended college in Denver.

She was a secretary for United Airlines.

She lived in California, Colorado and Washington.

She married Robert in 1948.

She is survived by her children, David, Teresa, Daniel and Jenifer; three grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; her sister, Mary Lou; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, who died February 2006.

Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Sept. 22 at Edline-Yahn and Covington Funeral Chapel.

Friends may contribute to the South King County Arboretum Foundation or the Alzheimer's Association.
