Funeral services for former Gillette resident, Louise Victoria Steinhoefel, 103, of Beemer, Neb., will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the First Methodist Church of Beemer.

Burial will follow in the Beemer City Cemetery.

Mrs. Steinhoefel died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, of natural causes at Colonial Haven Nursing Home of Beemer.

She was born Oct. 31, 1900, to Joseph and Minnie (Witte) Fleming at the family homestead in rural Cuming County, Neb. She attended rural schools in the area and graduated from Beemer High School in 1919.

She taught at various rural schools in the area until she married Adolph Steinhoefel in 1926. Shortly after they married, the Steinhoefels moved to Gillette to ranch southeast of town.

In August 1927, her son, Robert, was born at the family home in Gillette. The family farmed and ranched until Mr. Steinhoefel's death in 1932.

Mrs. Steinhoefel returned to Beemer with her son to settle her husband's estate in Nebraska. In 1933, she returned to the family ranch in Gillette. Her sister and brother-in-law came to help with the ranch and lived there until returning to Beemer in 1949. Mrs. Steinhoefel continued to work the ranch with her son until 1962 when she returned to Beemer to care for her mother. After her mother's death, she then cared for her mother's sister, Augusta Witte. After her aunt's death, she divided her time between Gillette and Beemer.

When in Nebraska, she stayed with her sister, Hazel Fleming, and at the family home when in Gillette.

In May 1998, she moved into the Colonial Haven Nursing Home where she lived until her death.

Mrs. Steinhoefel was an avid gardener who planted large gardens up until moving to the nursing home. Many neighbors benefited from her green thumb. She also loved to bake for her family and friends. She was a regular visitor to the nursing home to check on former students, until she became a resident herself.

During her years in Gillette, she was a member of the Benefit Homemakers Club, earning her 50-year service pin. She was a prolific letter writer. She had a number of friends in the Gillette area which she loved to visit.

Mrs. Steinhoefel is survived by her son, Robert Steinhoefel, and four grandchildren, Vicki Schlautmann, Renee Wetherelt, Sherry Addison, and Mike Addison, all of Gillette; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, David Steinhoefel; and four sisters, Gladys Webster, Ada Hoppel, Opal Fleming, and Hazel Fleming.
