Robert G. Apodaca

1930-2007

Robert G. “Jr.” Apodaca, 76, of Cheyenne died Jan. 9 at Cheyenne Regional Medical Center.

He was born March 24, 1930, in Cheyenne and had lived here all of his life.

Mr. Apodaca served in the United States Army and worked as a drywaller for numerous companies in the Cheyenne area. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and the American Legion Post No. 6.

He is survived by four sons, Mario Apodaca of Cheyenne, Joe Mike Martinez of Cheyenne, Tomas Martinez of Rio Rancho, N.M., and Ruben Martinez of Cheyenne; seven daughters, Diana Rivera of Cheyenne, Tina Romo of Riverside, Calif., Bea Duran of Las Vegas, Liz Martinez, Missy Rivera and Christine Martinez, all of Cheyenne, and Laura Zaragoza of Calamesa, Calif.; one sister, Veronica Montoya of Cheyenne; 22 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Apodaca was preceded in death by his wife, Elvira D. Apodaca on Jan. 14, 2005, to whom he was married 36 years; one daughter, Debra Campos; his parents, Robert O. and Frances Apodaca; one brother, Rudy Apodaca; and one sister, Maryann Apodaca.

Funeral Liturgy will be 1 p.m. today at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Ray Moss as celebrant.

Cremation will follow at Cheyenne Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Gabriel Apodaca, Noonie Rivera, Marco Hsiung, Dominick Apodaca, Richard Apodaca and Rudy Apodaca.

Honorary pallbearers will be Chris Montoya, Matt Campos, Robert Apodaca and Jimmy Martinez.

Military honors will be provided by the American Legion Honor Guard.

Friends may contribute to the American Heart Association.

Leo J. Whalen

1916-2007

Leo J. Whalen, 90, of Cheyenne died Feb. 8 in Cheyenne.

He was born Dec. 9, 1916, in Greeley County, Neb.

He was in civil service.

Mr. Whalen married Alma M. Swanson on Oct. 30, 1927, at St. Mary's Cathedral.

He was a member of National Active and Retired Federal Employees (NARFE) and Airport Golf Club.

He is survived by his wife, Alma M. Whalen of Cheyenne; sons and daughters-in-law, Joe and Nancy Whalen and Jim and Mary Whalen, all of Cheyenne; daughters and sons-in-law, Ann and Don Rhodes of Cheyenne, Jean and Oscar Williams of Glenn, Calif., Pat and Newt Holland of Kennewick, Wash.; 17 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Bill Whalen; his parents, Joseph and Clara Whalen; two brothers, Edward J. Whalen and Father James Whalen; and a sister, Agnes Dunning.

Vigil for the Deceased will be 4 p.m. Sunday at Schrader Chapel.

Funeral Liturgy will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Cathedral with Father Glen Szczechowski officiating.

Howard M. Mellblom

1923-2006

Howard M. Mellblom, 83, of Cheyenne died Dec. 16 in Cheyenne.

He was born Feb. 2, 1923, in Havre, Mont., to Victor and Thora (Kittelsrud) Mellblom.

He attended Northern Montana College in Havre and in 1942 enlisted in the Naval Air Cadet program earning his wings in 1944. He was assigned to fighter training and flew as a member of the Hellcat Squadron VF 151.

After World War II, he returned to Havre and then volunteered for active duty during the Korean War. He served aboard the Valley Forge aircraft carrier, flying with Corsair Squadron VF 92. He was awarded four Air Medals for 42 combat missions, the Navy Commendation Medal with Combat V, the American Defense Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Medal, the WWII Victory Medal, the National Defense Medal, with three Bronze Stars, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal and the Korean Presidential Unit Citation Medal.

He remained on continuous active duty as aircraft maintenance officer at Naval Air Station (NAS) Dallas, Texas, NAS, Seattle, Wash., NAS South Weymouth, Mass., and NAS Los Alamitos, Calif. He reported to the Naval Reserve Center in Cheyenne in June 1966 for his final assignment as commanding officer of the center. He retired with the rank of commander on July 1, 1970.

During his tour of duty in Cheyenne, he commissioned the Naval Reserve CB Division and started the annual Navy Ball in 1971. After retirement he was an agent for Bankers Life and Casualty Co. from 1970 to 1985.

He is a member of F.E. Warren Daedalian Flight No. 54, the Reserve Officers Association, the Military Officers Association and life member of VFW 1881. He was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church. He was an avid fly fisherman and bird hunter. He wished to be remembered as having died with a heart full of love for his family and friends and that he served his country and worshipped God.

He married Vanelda Novak on March 24, 1945, in Washington, D.C.

He is survived by Vanelda, his wife of 61 years; a daughter, Barbara (Michael) McCulloch, an artist and art instructor, of Fort Collins, Colo.; two sons, Dr. Frank (Deborah) Mellblom, an optometrist in Prescott, Ariz., and Mark Mellblom, an information officer and computer specialist, of Virginia Beach, Va.; grandchildren, Brian and Courtney Mellblom of Placentia, Calif, Tyler and Carson of Virginia Beach and two step granddaughters, Lauran (Michael) Rodriguez of Phoenix and Hilary (Phil) Sandberg of Virginia Beach and two step great-grandsons, Hunter Thompson and Jack Sandberg. Frank and Mark both retired from the Naval Reserve with the rank of commander. He has six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He also is survived by a sister, Barbara Montgomery of Bemidji, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Victor Mellblom Jr., and Neil Mellblom.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Ascension Lutheran Church. Interment will be today at F.E. Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne.

Memorial gifts may be made to Hospice, Daedalian Scholarship Fund, Cheyenne Botanic Gardens, Ascension Lutehran Church or a charity of choice.

Lawrence E. Presbury

1934-2007

Lawrence E. Presbury Sr., 72, of Cheyenne died Friday at Cheyenne Regional Medical Center.

He was born Sept. 28, 1934, in Havre De Grace, Md., and had lived here for the past 42 years.

Mr. Presbury served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict and Vietnam. After retirement from the Air Force, he worked for and retired from K-Mart and LCSD No. 1.

Lawrence was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Mr. Presbury is survived by his wife, Frances of Cheyenne, whom he married Dec. 29, 1957; two sons, Lawrence Presbury Jr. and Brian Presbury, both of Cheyenne; three daughters, Jocquelyn Jones of Cheyenne, Deborah Trawick of Louisiana, and Melissa "Lisa" Wilkins of Maryland; a brother, Ralph Presbury of Maryland; 16 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jeremiah and Edna Mae Presbury; two brothers; and three sisters.

Services will be 1 p.m. today at Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel of the Chimes with the Rev. Carieta Cain-Grizzell and the Rev. Martin Grizzell officiating.

Interment will follow at Beth El cemetery.

Casket bearers will be Folbert Ware Jr., Tyrone James, Doug Jones Jr., Willie Lee Johnson Jr., Meifrondee Waters and Ronald J. McNeill Sr.

Honorary casket bearers will be Walter Donohue, Cornelius Jones, Kevin Hatter, George Waldon, William Porter and Zackery Johnson.

Military honors provided by the American Legion Honor Guard.

Lorenzo Lujan

1940-2007

Lorenzo "Gene" Lujan, 66, of Cheyenne died Feb. 7 at Cheyenne Regional Medical Center.

He was born May 19, 1940, in Las Vegas, N.M., and had lived here most of his life.

Mr. Lujan had retired as dock foreman for Consolidated Freightways.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, International Union of Operating Engineers and a lifetime member of the Elks.

Mr. Lujan is survived by a nephew, Michael E. Murphy of Gaithersburg, Md.; four nieces, Gina M. Lujan, Margaret Y. Lopez and Pamela R. Webb, all of Cheyenne, and Robin E. (Mike) Bollinger of Eau Claire, Wis.; great-nieces and nephews, Amanda M. Grimm of Cheyenne, Stephanie M. Johnson of Phoenix, David J.E. Grimm of Cheyenne, Jamie A. Doyle of Eau Claire and Jordan M.T. Lopez, Hero L. Webb, Nicomedes J.R. Lopez and Madison E.A. Webb, all of Cheyenne; and great-great-niece and nephew, Sydney A. Wilson of Phoenix and Davien J. Grimm of Cheyenne; and the many lives that he touched.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Nicomedes and Cleofas Lujan; and three sisters, Lujanita Lujan, Mary Margaret Woolridge and Gloria Helen Bonds.

Vigil for the Deceased will be 7 p.m. today at Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel of the Chimes.

Funeral Liturgy will be 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church with the Rev. Ray Moss as the celebrant.

Interment will be 9 a.m. Monday at Olivet cemetery.

Friends may contribute to the American Diabetes Association or the National Kidney Foundation.

Mary Ellen Whorton

1939-2007

Mary Ellen (Limon) Whorton, 65, a longtime resident of Winlock, Wash., went to be with her Lord and Savior peacefully at her residence surrounded by her family on Feb. 5.

She was born on Sept. 28, 1939, in Fort Collins, Colo., the daughter of Jesus and Angelina Limon.

She graduated from Cheyenne High School in 1957.

Mary Ellen had a great love for the Lord. She was a member of the Christian Fellowship of Winlock, where in her later years she served as a deaconess.

She would like to be remembered for her love of her family and friends.

Mary Ellen enjoyed flowers, cooking, preparing for large family gatherings and traveling. Special to her heart were the trips to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, with her husband, children and grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by Dean Whorton, her loving husband of 36 years; sons, Dan Ryan and Mike Ryan (Tanya) of Winlock, and Dean Whorton Jr. of New Jersey; daughters, Linda Ryan of Chehalis and Laura Whorton and Lesa Wasser of Winlock; four brothers; four sisters; and grandchildren Katie, Michael, Angelina, Nick, Angela, Anthony, Kyle, Victoria, Megan, Kenny and Ethan.

Viewing will be held at Cattermole Funeral Home in Winlock from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today.

A graveside service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the Winlock cemetery followed by a celebration of life at the Christian Fellowship Church of Winlock.

Mary Ellen, mom, granny, you will be missed greatly.

Rosalie T. Hunt

1927-2007

Rosalie T. Hunt, 79, of Cheyenne died Feb. 6 at her home.

She was born on Nov. 8, 1927, in Lusk.

Mrs. Hunt has been a resident of Cheyenne since 1962 with prior residence in Fort Laramie.

She was employed by the State of Wyoming in the Duplicating Department and has owned and operated the Missile Mobile Court for 31 years.

Mrs. Hunt was affiliated with the Presbyterian Church and was a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.

Survivors include two sons, Hollis and wife, Mary Hunt of Cheyenne, and Edward Hunt of Cheyenne; one daughter, Lanetta "Netta" and husband, Tom Burke of Cheyenne; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one sister, Linda Hageman of Douglas; and one brother, Floyd Thomas of Cheyenne.

Mrs. Hunt was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Hunt on June 26, 2005; her parents, Albert Edward and Thelma Lanetta Thomas; and by two sisters, Alberta and Joan.

A celebration of life will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Robert Garrard officiating.

Interment will follow at Cheyenne Memorial Gardens .

Pall bearers will be Carl Moody, Mike Bowen, Ron Hartwig, Tommy Burke, Rob Hunt and Randy Lavalleur.

Honorary pallbearers are all of her family and friends.

Friends may contribute to the Davis Hospice Center or the Cerebral Palsy Foundation.

Services are under the direction of Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel of the Chimes.

Carolyn F. McDowall

1932-2007

Carolyn F. McDowall, 75, of Cheyenne and formerly of Pine Bluffs died Jan. 29 at Mountain Towers Healthcare.

Mrs. McDowall was born Jan. 28, 1932, in Elm Creek, Neb.

She was a homemaker.

Mrs. McDowall married Raymond Taylor on May 28, 1950 - he preceded her in death and then she married Dick McDowall on March 16, 1984. They later divorced.

She enjoyed singing and playing piano. She moved to Pine Bluffs in March of 1981.

She is survived by sons, Tim Taylor of Aurora, Colo., Warren Taylor, Gregory Taylor, both of Milliken, Colo., and Steven Taylor of Fairbanks, Alaska; a brother, Melvin Walker of Ogden, Utah; sisters, Marilyn Sisson of Pine Bluffs and Bonnie Hunter of Red Lodge, Mont.; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Taylor.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. today at Pine Bluffs United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jane Keener.

Cremation Schrader's Sunset Park Crematory.

Friends may contribute to the American Cancer Society.

Riley J. Fornstrom

2007

Riley James Fornstrom, newborn son of Mark and Susan Fornstrom, died Feb. 5 in Fort Collins, Colo.

Riley was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church in Pine Bluffs.

He is survived by his parents; brothers, Ryan, Andrew, Christopher and Taylor Fornstrom, all of Pine Bluffs; grandparents, Robert and Jana Fornstrom of Pine Bluffs and Tim and Mary Novotny of Grand Junction, Colo.; great-grandmothers, Marian French of Longmont, Colo., and Beatrice Ryan of Grand Junction.

Private family services have been held.

Thurman Gile

1960-2007

Thurman Gile, 46, died Jan. 20 in Melrose, N.M.

He was born Sept. 29, 1960, in Hudson, N.Y.

To you Lord, we give to you our loving Father, Thurman Gile, as he ascends into heaven to join his wife, Helen and son, Vincent. He leaves behind 10 children, Rose Gile of Ft. Morgan, Colo., Tammy Gile of Burns, Thurman "T.J." Gile Jr., of Rawlins, Barbara Peterson of Clovis, N.M., Denise Raines of Melrose, Lisa Farham of Cohose, N.Y., Betney Ferrill of Melrose, Paula Kress and Charles Kress, both of South Dakota, and Rose Marie Kress of Pocatello, Idaho; 40 grandchildren and five precious great-grandchildren.

We all miss him as we place him in your arms to bring him home.
