Melba Turner Davis

GREYBULL — Melba Turner Davis, 94, died Friday Oct. 19, 2007 at the Bonnie Bluejacket Memorial Nursing Home between Greybull and Basin.

Born June 18, 1913 in Heizer, Kan. she was the oldest child and only daughter of Jan and Fern Cole Turner. Her father a depot agent for the CB&Q Railroad became the depot agent in Greybull in July 1920. Melba began her education at Greybull’s “Stone School” in September 1920. An outstanding student, she was doubly promoted on two occasions and graduated from the Greybull High School at the age of 16 in May 1930.

After working at the Greybull Library for a time in the fall of 1932 Melba enrolled in “normal training,” a teacher education course offered in Worland. After student teaching in Neiber and in Worland elementary school during the spring of 1933, Melba completed her certification by attending summer school at the University of Wyoming in the summer of 1934. That fall she started her first full-time teaching job at the East Emblem School.

In 1937, after teaching at Emblem for three years, she accepted a teaching position at the Durkee School, located in a farming community northeast of Worland.

While teaching in Emblem, Melba became better acquainted with Jonathan Davis, who had been a lowly sophomore at Greybull High School when she was a senior. On Dec. 29, 1937, Melba and Jonathan were married at the Turner Family Home in Greybull.

In those days it was believed only single women were suited for teaching school, so her teaching ended in May 1938. During the 1950’s she assisted in East Emblem 4-H programs.

Melba also participated actively in the Greybull Parent Teacher Association while her children attended Greybull schools. Always an avid reader and lover of poetry, for many years Melba maintained a small-scale community lending library in her home for the Big Horn County Library.

She joined the First Baptist Church of Greybull in October 1923 and maintained an active membership there for 84 years. In 1938, she became a member of the East Emblem Missionary Society and continued her active participation in that group until her health began to decline. She taught Vacation Bible School at East Emblem during the 1940’s and 1950’s and often taught Sunday school in her home, for her own, and several neighborhood children. In 1983 she compiled a history of Greybull’s First Baptist Church in preparation of the church’s 75th anniversary celebration.

She was a member of the Big Horn County Historical Society. In 1987, Melba and Jonathan published a book titled, “They call it Germania: The History of Wyoming’s Emblem Bench, 1893-1939”. In addition, Melba wrote the East Emblem news items for the Greybull Standard for many years.

Melba was preceded in death by her parents, and her brothers, Warren (Cub) in 1993, and J. Olin in 2001.

She is survived by Jonathan Davis, her husband of 69 years; her three children, Philip (Gina) Davis of Oceano, Calif., Thomas Davis of Emblem and Susan (Chuck) Summerfield of Chester, Pa.
