Henry ‘Hank’ Zimmerman

A graveside memorial service for Henry “Hank” Zimmerman, 86, is 2 p.m. Saturday in the Elks cemetery in Sheridan. Officers from the Elks Lodge will perform committal rites. Mr. Zimmerman of Quartzsite, Ariz., and formerly of Sheridan, died Jan. 24, 2001, at Lake Havasu City, Ariz. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Sheridan Elks Lodge in care of John Mitchell, 45 West Brundage, Sheridan, WY, 82801. Kane Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

Iris W. Marquess

A memorial service for Iris W. Marquess, 100, who died Feb. 5, 2001, is 11 a.m. Saturday, June 16, at Mount Hope cemetery in Big Horn. A reception will follow at Lions Club Park in Big Horn.

Della Leis

BUFFALO — Della Fern Leis, 66, of Buffalo died Wednesday, June 6, 2001, in Casper. Visitation is 1-10 p.m. today at the Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Buffalo. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Adams Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Karen Miers officiating. Burial will be in Willow Grove cemetery with graveside rites.

John Lloyd

BROADUS, Mont. — John Victor “Vic” Lloyd, 94, died Monday, June 4, 2001, at the Powder River Manor in Broadus. Visitation will be Friday in the chapel of Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Broadus. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday in the Powder River Congregational Church in Broadus. Interment will be 4 p.m. in the family lot in the Custer County cemetery in Miles City. Mr. Lloyd was born Oct. 1, 1906, in Beaver, Okla., to Charles A. and Anna V. (Childers) Lloyd. The family moved to the Rosebud area in Montana when he was in high school. He married Evelyn Dorothy Williams in 1931. They ranched on Moon Creek and he worked for Lockie Livestock. They later separated. Mr. Lloyd moved to Miles City in 1949. In 1985 he moved to Broadus. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Mike, Lee, Joe and Ward; and two sisters, Bertha and Frieda. Survivors include two sons, Gib of Broadus and Gary of Sheridan; a daughter, Betty Kiser of Newell, S.D.; eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Powder River Manor Activity Fund, 104 N. Trautman, Broadus, MT 59317.

Roger Todd

Roger E. Todd, 84, of Sheridan died Saturday, June 2, 2001, in the Sheridan VA Medical Center. Visitation is 6-7 p.m. today at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Elks cemetery. Mr. Todd was born Jan. 16, 1917, in Sheridan to Fred and Gladys (Wilcox) Todd. He grew up on Lower Piney Creek ranch near Ucross, attending grade school in Clearmont and graduating from Sheridan High School. He joined the Army Air Corps after graduation. He married Margueritte A. Kagie Dec. 5, 1942. They moved to Arizona, where he worked two years as a railroad conductor, and later moved to Lower Piney Creek and Clear Creek. They moved to Big Horn in 1984. Mr. Todd served on the board of directors of the Sheridan-Johnson Rural Electric Association and was a life member of Sheridan Elks Lodge 520. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and gardening. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1992 and by two brothers, George and Luther. Survivors include four sons, Richard of Mountain Home, Ariz., David of Buffalo and Steven and Edgar, both of Sheridan; two daughters, Linda Mentock of Raytown, Mo., and Virginia Ewalt of British Columbia, Canada; two sisters, Edna Fay of Sheridan and Sadie Dexter of Cheyenne; two brothers, the Rev. Eugene Todd of Cheyenne and Lewis Todd of Tucson, Ariz.; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Sheridan Senior Citizens Center in care of Nancy Drummond, 428 N. Jefferson, Sheridan, WY 82801.

Harold Bosley

Viewing for Harold W. Bosley, 81, of Sheridan is 2-7 p.m. today at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church with the Rev. William Heine officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal cemetery with military honors by the American Legion and National Guard. Mr. Bosley died Sunday, June 3, 2001, in Sheridan VA Medical Center. He was born Aug. 27, 1919, in Sheridan to Alvin and Elizabeth (Roberts) Bosley. He attended Sheridan schools and played football. He left school in the 11th grade to work at Bondi Brothers grocery store to help his brother through school. He enlisted in the Navy the day after Pearl Harbor and served on the USS American Legion Troop Transport until his discharge in 1945. He married Harriett Winkler Oct. 22, 1946, in Sheridan. He worked for the CB&Q Railroad as brakeman and conductor until 1967, when he retired. He worked part time for Top Typewriter and volunteered many hours for a golf tournament to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Society. He received many awards for his volunteer services. He was a member of American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars and a retired member of United Transportation Union. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Frank, Roy and Clifford, and by two sisters, Nora Vielhauer and Claudine Hoiten. Survivors include two sons, John of Sheridan and James P. of Sioux Falls, S.D. Memorials may benefit the Harold Bosley Memorial Fund in care of Nancy Drummond at 428 N. Jefferson, Sheridan, WY 82801.

Eugene Coombs

BILLINGS — Eugene E. Coombs, 75, of Billings died Sunday, June 3, 2001, at Billings Deaconess Hospital. He was grandfather of Chris Bugher of Sheridan. Visitation will be through 9 p.m. today at Smith Funeral Chapels’ Downtown Chapel in Billings. Cremation will follow. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Grace United Methodist Church in Billings. Private family interment of the ashes will be Thursday. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Doris Coombs and Lenore Waddell. Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Edee Russell of Bozeman, Julie Bugher of Buffalo and Gloria Coombs of Fargo, N.D.; three stepchildren, Dr. Richard Metzger of Chattanooga, Tenn., Dr. David Metzger of Lambertville, N.J., and Marion Rizzo of Newburyport, Mass.; three other grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Clara Knight

HARDIN — Clara Lix Knight, 90, of Hardin and formerly of Lodge Grass, died Sunday, June 3, 2001, in Big Horn County Memorial Hospital. Vigil services are 7 p.m. today in Bullis Funeral Chapel in Hardin. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Hardin St. Joseph Catholic Church, followed by Rite of Committal in Little Big Horn Battlefield National cemetery.

Della Plachek

Viewing for Della Mae Plachek, 75, of Sheridan will be 1-3 p.m. Sunday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Monday at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church with the Rev. David Duprey officiating. Interment will be in Masonic 43 Section of Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Mrs. Plachek died Wednesday, May 30, 2001, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. She was born July 15, 1925, in Sheridan to E.E. and Anna (Stocker) Sneath. She grew up and attended schools in Sheridan. She received nurse’s training in Port Arthur, Texas. She returned to Sheridan and married Louis Plachek July 1, 1950, in Sheridan. She was a nurse at Memorial Hospital 35 years and at the Sheridan VA Medical Center 10 years until she retired. She was a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Diamond Rebekah Lodge and Daughters of the Nile. She was past Worthy Matron of Friendship Chapter 51 of Eastern Star. She was past treasurer and secretary of the Wyoming State Licensed Practical Nurses Association. She enjoyed raising orchids, gardening, playing cards crocheting, dancing and old movies. She was preceded in death by her husband and by a sister, Edna Morris. Survivors include a son, Gary, of Sheridan; a brother, Glenn Heaton of Sheridan; a granddaughter; and two great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to St. Peter’s Episcopal Church.

Mary Smith

Visitation for Mary M. Smith, 83, of Sheridan is 2-5 p.m. today at Kane Funeral Home. Cremation will follow. Mrs. Smith died Monday, May 28, 2001, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. She was born July 1, 1917, to Mary (Koscielniok) and Mike Patz in Monarch. She married Mick Petrovich. They divorced. She married George Smith. They ranched near Piney Creek until his death, when she moved into Sheridan. She was a seamstress and worked for the Sheridan Singer store for many years. A member of Holy Name Catholic Church, she was also active in Order of St. Luke, Secular Order of St. Franciscan, the Contemplative Prayer Group, Women’s Bible Study and the Rosary Group. She enjoyed working as a volunteer in the Holy Name Thrift Shop. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Joe Patz, and a sister, Sophia Bearrows. Survivors include two children, Robb Smith of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Stasia Sayer of Sheridan; one brother, Frank Patz of Sheridan; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Memorials may be made to Holy Name Fund for the Needy, Sheridan Senior Citizens Center or San Benito Monastery in care of Delphine Toner, First Interstate Bank, P.O. Box 2007, Sheridan, WY 82801. Garth Daniel Scott, 66, of Sheridan died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001, at the Sheridan VA Medical Center. Arrangements are pending with Kane Funeral Home.

Ellen Gunter

Ellen R. Gunter, 86, of Sheridan died Monday, July 30, 2001, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Wilbur Holz officiating. Interment will be in the Masonic #8 Section of Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Mrs. Gunter was born June 23, 1915, in Leipzig, Germany, to Josef and Maria (Seliger) Reinisch. The family came to the United States in 1927, and Mrs. Gunter graduated from high school and business school in New York City. She worked as a bookkeeper for an architectural firm until 1937, when she returned to Germany. She worked as a clerk/stenographer in Leipzig. She taught German to children of the American Armed Forces in Bremerhaven, West Germany, from 1947 until she returned to the United States in 1951. She came to Eatons’ Ranch and worked at a bookkeeper until 1954, when she moved into Sheridan. She worked as a secretary/clerk at N.A. Nelson Construction until 1960. She married Albert Gunter July 29, 1958, in Sheridan. They lived in Lander and Gillette and returned to Sheridan in 1967. Mrs. Gunter was a bookkeeper for Panetta Brothers until 1977. She was a member of Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile and Does Drove 127. She enjoyed reading, travel and animals. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1995, a brother and a sister. Survivors include a stepdaughter, Jean Richards of Denver; a brother, Stephen Moser of Rexburg, Idaho; two stepgrandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild. Memorials may be made to the Sheridan Dog and Cat Shelter, 325 Fort Road, Sheridan, WY 82801.

Joyce McGee

Joyce McGee, 65, of Sheridan died Monday, July 30, 2001, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. An open viewing will be all day Friday at Kane Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Kane Funeral Home with Pastor Dan Keller officiating.

Lillian Reese

Lillian Ethel Reese, 87, died Saturday, Oct. 27, 2001, at Sheridan Manor. Cremation has taken place, and the family will hold private services at a later date. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Reese was born Aug. 30, 1914, in Mingo Junction, Ohio, to Brewer and Lillie (Mitchell) Thomas. She was a former resident of Follansbee, W.Va., and was a member of the Follansbee United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by two husbands, two brothers and two sisters, all of the Ohio Valley. Survivors include a son, Ernest Brady of Sheridan; a stepdaughter, Marie Cribbs of Follansbee; two granddaughters; and two great-grandchildren.

Thelma Vaughn

Thelma Ethel Hyres (Pat) Vaughn, 86, of Sheridan died Saturday, Oct. 27, 2001, in Sheridan Manor. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service has not yet been planned. Interment will be in Palm cemetery in Winter Park, Fla., at a later date. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Vaughn was born May 17, 1915, in Orlando, Fla., to William M. and Mary Irene Hughes (Bartholomew) Hyres. She was preceded in death by two brothers, William M. Hyres Jr. and Milton Benjamin Hyres; and a sister, Edna Irene Hyres Lombardi. Survivors include a son, L. Jeffrey Cook of Sheridan; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Memorials may be made to the Sheridan First Baptist Church Building Fund or a charity of the donor’s choice in care of Delphine Toner, First Interstate Bank in Sheridan.

Mary Grey Buchanan, 78, of Sheridan died Sunday, Oct. 28, 2001, in Westview Health Care Center. Arrangements are pending with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Lillian Reese

Lillian E. Reese, 87, formerly of Follansbee, W.Va., died Saturday, Oct. 27, 2001, at Sheridan Manor. Kane Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Michael Crilly

Michael Matthew Crilly, 54, of Sheridan died Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2001, at his summer home in Big Fork, Mont. Vigil services will be 7 p.m. today at Kane Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Holy Name Catholic Church with Monsignor Eugene Sullivan officiating. Mr. Crilly was born Oct. 6, 1947, in Lincoln, Neb., to James and Dorothy (Felix) Crilly. He was a graduate of the University of Wyoming. He married Barbara Fowler Sept. 2, 1972. He taught business education in Montana and Wyoming schools before becoming personnel manager for Decker Coal. He enjoyed golfing, boating, four-wheeling and sports including coaching young people in football and basketball. He was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church and Our Lady of the Pines Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife of Sheridan; a daughter, Kimberly of Phoenix; a son, Scott of Laramie; two brothers, James of Norfolk, Neb., and Timothy of Cheyenne; and a sister, Mary Liz Gale of Sheridan. Memorials may be made to the Mike Crilly Memorial Fund in care of Delphine Toner, First Interstate Bank, P.O. Box 2007, Sheridan, WY 82801. Funds will go to his favorite charities.

Robert Freese

Story-native Robert Merrill Freese, 69, of Pocatello, Idaho, died Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2001, at his home. Memorial services were Oct. 6 at Henderson Cornelison Funeral Home in Pocatello with the Rev. Tom H. Tate officiating. Mr. Freese was born Feb. 26, 1932, in Buffalo to Myrle Irene and William Merrill Freese of Story. He grew up and attended school in Story and at Sheridan High School. He worked with horses, rodeoed and hunted. He drove trucks for many years until he had to quit due to health problems. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Patricia Morgan; and a grandson. Survivors include his wife, Helen, and children, sisters, brothers and grandchildren.

Willa’ Irwin

Annie “Willa” Cortell Irwin, 79, died Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2001, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Viewing is until 4 p.m. today. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Kane Funeral Home with Pastor Bill Wetmore of Sheridan Wesleyan Church officiating. Graveside services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at Mount Pisgah cemetery in Gillette. Mrs. Irwin was born April 7, 1922, in Rozet to Raymond Wilford and Kathryn May Kottraba. She entered first grade in Rozet, then the family moved to Davenport, Neb., for two years. They returned to Rozet, and she graduated from high school there in 1941. She worked on ranches and taught school during World War II. She married William Russell Irwin May 25, 1944, and they settled in Gillette. He worked for the CB&Q Railroad until 1969, when he retired. They lived in Buffalo until November 1998, when she moved to Sheridan Manor. She enjoyed crocheting, flowers, country music and cats. She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Willa Diane Irwin; a stepdaughter, Dorothy Irwin; and a brother, Leland Kottraba. Survivors include a daughter, Roberta Trenholm of Billings; four sons, Raymond of Douglas, James of Ranchester, Charles of Billings and Duane of Sheridan; a stepson, Leslie of Mayer, Ariz.; a brother, Charles Kottraba of Moorcroft; and three sisters, Leola Thar of Gillette, Helen Whisler of Sheridan and Hazel Riesland of Newcastle; 15 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association in care of Kay Roush, First Federal Savings Bank, P.O. Box 6007, Sheridan, WY 82801.

William Merrill Jr.

Dr. William E. Merrill Jr., 92, of Sheridan died Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Cremation has taken place. A private family burial will be in Parish, N.Y., at a later date. Arrangements were with Kane Funeral Home. Dr. Merrill was born Oct. 9, 1909, to William and Grace (Warner) Merrill in Nichols, N.Y. He was a 1931 graduate of Bucknell University and obtained his doctorate in medicine in 1935 at the University of Rochester. He practiced as a country doctor in upstate New York. He married Dorothy Holbrook in Hornell, N.Y., July 27, 1937. She died in 1971. He married Katherine Showalter Nov. 22, 1973, in Lewisburg, Pa. She died in 1989. He enjoyed classical music, books, Broadway musicals and playing golf and the violin. He was an anonymous philanthropist to many of his favorite charities. Survivors include a son, John, of Sheridan; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Memorials may be made to Dr. William E. Merrill State Park in care of Parish Community Recreation, Marylou Guindon, 2885 E. Main St., Parish, NY 13131. Monies collected will be used to purchase playground equipment.

Grace Pergande & Phyllis Tanner

Private family graveside services for Grace Darling Pergande, 91, of Sheridan and Phyllis Matilda Tanner, 81, of Sacramento, Calif., will be 1 p.m. Thursday in Sheridan Municipal cemetery with the Rev. Doug Goodwin and C.B. Johnson officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Pergande died Sept. 12, 2001, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Miss Tanner died April 4, 2001, in Sacramento. Cremation has taken place for both women. Both requested that they be interred next to their sister, Blanche Clapham, in Sheridan. Mrs. Pergande was born Sept. 30, 1909, in Ridgeway, Mo., to William V. and Mary Nora (Bennet) Tanner. She was an executive secretary in the U.S. government for many years. Miss Tanner was born Sept. 16, 1919, in Ridgeway to William V. and Mary Nora (Bennet) Tanner. They were preceded in death by three brothers and four sisters. Survivors include a brother, Don Tanner of Lebanon, Mo.; two nephews, Walter L. Clapham of Sheridan and Joseph Clapham of Denver; two nieces, Bonnie Tanner of California and Carol Tanner of Pennsylvania; three grandnieces and two grandnephews. Memorials may be made to the Soup Kitchen or the First Christian Church in care of Delphine Toner, First Interstate Bank, Sheridan. Frances Ross Frances M. Ross, 69, of Sheridan died Sunday, Oct. 21, 2001, at Sheridan Manor. Cremation has taken place. At Mrs. Ross’ request, no services will be held. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home. Mrs. Ross was born Jan. 29, 1932, to Paul and Agnes Madzia in Monarch. She attended the Monarch school and in 1949 married Don Arborgast. They divorced, and she later married Paul Ross. She worked as a waitress at the Sheridan Inn, the Sheridan Sandwich Shop, Woody’s Restaurant and the City Drive In. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church on Park Street and enjoyed playing bingo. She was preceded in death by a brother, Paul. Survivors include a daughter, Shawnee Arborgast of Boise, Idaho; three sisters, Alice Warnke, Agnes Legerski and Helen Cherni, all of Sheridan; and a brother, John Madzia of Sheridan.

Myrtle James

BUFFALO — Myrtle Inez James, 75, of Buffalo died Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, at Johnson County Healthcare Center. She was sister of Amy Smee of Sheridan. Viewing will be 1-10 p.m. Thursday and 8 a.m. until time of services Friday. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Buffalo with the Rev. Danny Francis officiating. Burial will be in Willow Grove cemetery. Mrs. James was born April 12, 1926, in Guernsey to Jacob and Nettie Myers. She grew up and was educated in Buffalo. She married Paul James Oct. 28, 1941. They made their home in Buffalo. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1971 and by a daughter, one brother, one sister, a grandson and a great-granddaughter. Survivors include a son, Edmond of Buffalo; another sister, Ruth Himbaugh of Yuma, Ariz.; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association in care of Adams Funeral Home.
