Catherine M. Meyer

ROCK SPRINGS — Catherine M. Meyer, 46, of Rock Springs, died Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002, at the Wyoming Medical Center in Casper after a lengthy illness.

She was born Jan. 9, 1956, in Burwell, Neb., the daughter of Gerald and Eldeane Collins Samples. She married Rickie John Meyer in Rock Springs on Nov. 5, 1983.

Meyer attended schools in Wilber, Neb., and graduated from Wilber High School with the class of 1974. She also attended WWCC in Rock Springs and received her MOA in 1994. She received her CNA from Hillhaven Corp. in 1989. She had been employed as a CNA and had previously worked for Sage View Care Center in Rock Springs and Castle Rock Convalescent Center in Green River.

She was a member of the New Life Ministries Church.

Her interests were gardening and her dogs.

Survivors include her husband Rickie and one son, Adam, both of Rock Springs; eight brothers, Gary Samples and wife Linda of Adams, Neb., Bruce Sell and wife Jeannie of Gretna, Neb., Edward Samples of Nashville, Tenn., Robert Sell of Wichita, Kan., Franklin “Gene” Samples and friend Susan of Clatonia, Neb., James Samples of Fairbury, Neb., Kevin Samples and wife Nancy of Beartice, Neb., and Gerald “Jerry” Samples and wife Shirley of Bremerton, Wash.; five sisters, Cindy Zajicek and husband Allan of Wilber, Cheryl Bice and husband Jeff of Wahoo, Neb., Candyce Yager, Christine Lane and husband David, and Carin Jelinek and husband Brad, all of Wilber; grandmother, Ruth Collins of Depoe Bay, Ore.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and stepmother Janette Samples.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be conducted at 9 a.m. Friday, Nov. 8, 2002, at the New Life Ministries Church, 105 K. St., Rock Springs. Inurnment will be in the Rock Springs Municipal cemetery.

David Lehman Wall

AMERICAN FORK, Utah — David Lehman Wall, 30, died Nov. 5, 2002, in American Fork, Utah.

He was born April 20, 1972, in American Fork to Lehman and Peggy Jones Wall. He married Shelley Pitchforth; they were later divorced.

He drove for Bunning Transfer Co. for five years. He was a father and his hobbies were doing things with his daughter, camping and going four-wheeling.

He is survived by his daughter, McKenzie Lee Wall of American Fork; his father, Lehman of American Fork; three brothers, Michael and wife Colleen of American Fork, Douglas and wife Monica of Rock Springs, and Steven and wife Shelley of American Fork; and a sister, Julie and Craig Shepherd of Meridian, Idaho.

He was preceded in death by his mother.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Anderson & Sons Mortuary Chapel, where friends may call Friday from 6-8 p.m. and Saturday one hour prior to the services. Burial will be in the American Fork cemetery.

Joe Tardoni

ROCK SPRINGS — Joe Tardoni, 82, of 1340 New Hampshire No. 77, Rock Springs, died at 10:08 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002, at the Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County in Rock Springs, where he had been a patient for the past one day. A lifetime resident of Winton and Rock Springs, Tardoni had been in ill health for the past four years.

He was born in Frontier on Dec. 15, 1919, the son of the late Frank and Josephine Rossetti Tardoni.

Tardoni attended schools in Winton and Reliance and was a graduate of the Reliance High School with the class of 1939.

He married the former Mary Jane Thomas in Raton, N.M., on Nov. 21, 1944, and she preceded him in death on Dec. 18, 1974.

Tardoni was a veteran of World War II and served in the U.S. Army in the 10th Mountain Division.

Tardoni was a mechanic and worked for various companies in Rock Springs. He was later employed at Stauffer as a mechanic and worked there for 20 years and retired in 1985.

He was a member of the Holy Spirit Catholic Community, the American Legion and the Fraternal Order of the Eagles.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Frady of Rock Springs; one son, Edward Tardoni and wife Joanna; one daughter, Mary Joe Kaumo and husband Buddy; two stepsons, Don Frady and wife Cindi and Ted Frady and wife Holly, all of Rock Springs; one sister, Mary Guerri and husband Attilio of Provo, Utah; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Margaret and Juan Martinez of Reliance and Ted and Pricilla Rivera of Rock Springs; grandchildren, Michael Tardoni and wife Jennifer of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, James Tardoni and wife Trina of Rock Springs, Brian Kaumo and wife Donna of Albuquerque, N.M., Chris Kaumo and Angel Lawson of Tucson, Ariz., Sona Schneck and husband Corey of Farmington, Minn., Krista Thomaas of Spokane, Wash., Josh Achenbach and Samantha Achenbach, both of Rock Springs, Terrance Frady and Rion Frady, both of Rock Springs; nieces, Joanne Clarkson and husband Richard of Orlando, Fla., Lorraine and Joe Bogataj, Josephine and John Tarufelli, Charlotte and Paul Parker, Diana Coates, all of Rock Springs, Glen and Joanne Kragovich of Canon City, Colo., Lawrence and Margie Martinez of Reliance and Ronnie and Angie Martinez of Haley, Idaho; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and several cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; one brother, who died in infancy, Dominic Tardoni; sisters and brothers-in-law, Annie and Joe Kragovich and Jennie and John Nigra; two nephews, Ernest Nigra and Donald Kragovich; and one granddaughter, Michelle Kaumo.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, at the SS. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church, 633 Bridger Ave., Rock Springs. The Rev. John Savio will officiate. A rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the SS. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church. Military graveside services and interment will be in the St. Joseph’s Section of the Rock Springs Municipal cemetery. Friends may call at the Vase Funeral Chapel Sunday afternoon until 5 p.m. and again at 6 p.m. at the church and again Monday morning at the church until time of services.

The family will be receiving friends and family at the home of Mary Joe and Buddy Kaumo, 1009 Palomino St., Rock Springs.

Joseph Milton Hay

PINEDALE — Joseph Milton Hay died on Nov. 27, 2002, due to a long battle with a number of chronic illnesses that plagued him in his later years.

Hay was born Dec. 3, 1917, to Lawrence and Florence Hay of Superior. The Hays were a pioneer family. The family moved from Superior to Rock Springs after the death of Hay’s grandfather, also named Joseph Hay.

Hay and his father took over the operation of the Rachel Hay Sheep Company. He attended high school in Rock Springs and accepted a full scholarship to Northwestern University in football.

Hay was accepted into a special officer’s training program at Annapolis Naval Academy and served in World War II in Sipan in the South Pacific.

He married his first wife, Jean O’Brien of Willamette, Ill., during the war. After the war, they moved to Rock Springs and then Phoenix, Ariz. Jean preceded him in death many years ago.

When he returned from the war, he started his career in the livestock buying business. Hay did business for more than 50 years.

In 1966, Hay met Dorothy Evelyn DeMarco of Phoenix. They were married in January of 1967 and they resided in Pinedale for many years. She preceded Hay in death in 2000. After her passing, Hay experienced a number of health problems and finally moved to Fort Collins, Colo., so he could be closer to a hospital and other elder care services.

Hay is survived by his sister, Sally Hay Gillum of Las Vegas, Nev.; his daughter, Camille DeMarco Hay of Fort Collins; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and long time friends.

Funeral services are pending. Two memorials will be conducted. The first will be at the Residence at Oakridge, Fort Collins, on Dec. 10, 2002, at 4:15 p.m. with the Rev. John Pons officiating. Another memorial will be on Dec. 14, 2002, at the Mortuary Chapel at 1 p.m. in Pinedale. The Rev. Dick Calbert will conduct the memorial.

Robert Martinez Sr.

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — Robert Martinez Sr., 74, died Sunday, March 30, 2003, of pneumonia at Shea Health Center in San Bernardino, Calif.

He was born in Superior.

Martinez lived in Riverside 48 years. He was an aircraft electrician at Lockheed Martin in Ontario for 38 years until he retired in 1991.

Martinez served in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II and then served in the U.S. Navy until 1954.

He is survived by his wife, Fortunata; three daughters, Francesca Acosta, Rosa Ramirez and Gloria, all of Riverside; a son, Robert Jr. of San Bernardino; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a brother, Vincent of Wyoming.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 9 a.m. Friday, April 4, 2003, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Riverside. A rosary was recited at that time. Burial was in Riverside National cemetery.

Linda June Patterson

ROCK SPRINGS - Linda June Patterson, 60, of 311 Angle St., Rock Springs, died Wednesday, July 2, 2003, at the Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County shortly after being admitted. A resident of Rock Springs for the past 35 years and former resident of Dodge City, Kan., Mrs. Patterson had been in ill health for the past eight months.

She was born on Nov. 22, 1942, in Pratt, Kan., the daughter of the late Melvin Ernest Withers and Dorothy Loretta Howe.

Mrs. Patterson attended schools in Pratt, and was a graduate of Pratt High School with the class of 1961.

She was employed as a waitress at the New Grand Cafe for 20 years.

Her interests included hunting, camping, horseback riding, fishing and sewing.

Survivors include five sons, Robert Harry Patterson, Aron Wesley Patterson both of Rock Springs, Clark Wesley Patterson of Casper, Salvador Ernest Patterson of Cody, Victor Patterson of Texas; three daughters, Dana Colleen Patterson of Rock Springs, Margaret Ann Gutkowski of Cody and Lana Gail Patterson of Idaho; three brothers, Steve Withers of Tennessee, Rich Withers and Ronnie Withers of Utah; one sister, Corrine Stimist of Colorado; nine grandchildren, Victor Flores, Aron Flores, Salvador Flores, Richard Patterson, Linda Patterson, Cyndi Patterson, Clark Patterson Jr., Charlene Patterson and Crystal Patterson.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert H. Patterson; her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Devaugn and Sarah Patterson.

Following cremation, a memorial service will be conducted at 4 p.m. on Thursday, July 17, 2003, at the Pilot Butte Baptist Church, 1233 McTee St., Rock Springs. The Rev. Eddie Kiggins will conduct the services. Friends may call at the church one hour prior to services.

Attilio Guerri Sr.

PROVO, Utah - Attilio Guerri Sr., 90, died at his home in Provo on Sunday, July 27, 2003.

He was born July 7, 1913, in Gulnare, Colo., to Emilio and Domenica Foc-chini Guerri. He married Mary Tardoni on Dec. 11, 1937, in Rock Springs.

He was raised in Italy, and at the age of 16, returned to the United States where he worked in the coalmines in Colorado and Wyoming. In 1955, he and his family moved to Utah where he was employed at Geneva Steel as a crane operator in the open-hearth until retirement in 1975.

He was active in the Knights of Columbus at St. Francis Catholic Church.

His interests were fishing and camping with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Mary of Provo; daughter, Joanne and Richard Clarkson of Orlando, Fla.; four grandchildren, Duane and Nancy of Florida, David of Florida, Teresa and Jim of Kansas, and Lesa of Colorado; six great-grandchildren, Megan, Matthew, Christie, Colton, Jake, and Paige; a sister, Maria of Florence, Italy; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Emilio and Domenica; two brothers, Lino and Valentino; one sister, Dina; and two sons, Attilio Jr. Sonny and Kenneth James.

Funeral Mass was Thursday, July 31, 2003, at the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 65 E. 500 N., Orem.

Garie Douglas Kutz

GREEN RIVER - Garie Douglas Kutz, 59, died July 28, 2003, in Green River.

He was born April 18, 1944, the son of Arthur E. and Thelma Elaine Widic Kutz. He attended schools in Green River and married Peggy Corhn in Rock Springs. They were later divorced.

Kutz was active in Golden Gloves Boxing Association and Boy Scouts of America. He worked on the Flaming Gorge Dam during construction and later attended flight training school in Broomfield, Colo. He was a flight instructor for WWCC at the Rock Springs Airport. He spent the last eight years in the Phoenix area, recently returning to Green River.

He is survived by three daughters, Tammy Mowland and husband Dale of Rock Springs, Lorena May Cathey and husband Johnny of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Jorena Kay Lasich of Lynnwood, Wash.; sisters Gaye Winter and husband Don of Green River, and Joy Dawn Gilbert of Last Vegas; half-brother, Kevin Karician and wife Lanie of Roy, Utah; half-sisters, Danita Traxinger and husband Owen, and Misty Karician-Zimmerman and husband Scott; stepfather, Harry Karician, all of Green River; and maternal grandmother, Pearl Zimmerman, also of Green River.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Merrily Joan Kutz Hussman; and nephews, Shaun Michael Kutz and Douglas Ray Bernard; and his mother, Ealine Karician.

Cremation will take place. Services are pending.

Jimmy Lee Smith

ROCK SPRINGS - Jimmy Lee Smith, 77, of 211 Virginia St., Rock Springs, died on Tuesday, July 29, 2003, in Salt Lake City. She had been a resident of Rock Springs since 1956 and a former resident of Oklahoma.

She was born on Oct. 16, 1925, in Wewoka Seminoe, Okla., the daughter of the late William Clarence and Icy S. Brown.

Mrs. Smith attended schools in Oklahoma and was a graduate of high school with the class of 1943.

She married Bill C. Smith on Dec. 28, 1941, in Seminole, and he preceded her in death on May 16, 1986. She later married Bill B. Smith on April 4, 1998.

Her interests included spending time with her family, collecting fun things, and shopping.

Survivors include her husband, Bill Smith of Rock Springs; one son, Randy Smith and wife Debbie of Thornton, Colo.; one daughter-in-law, Julie Smith of Cheyenne; and five grandchildren, Kayla, Cody, Stefan, Andrew and Monica Smith.

She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband; and one son, Steve Smith.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 4, 2003, at the Vase Funeral Chapel, 154 Elk St., Rock Springs. Duane Braegger will conduct the services. Interment will be in the Paul J. Wataha Memorial Park Section of the Rock Springs Municipal cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel Sunday afternoon from 4-8 p.m. and again at the chapel Monday until time of services.

Gayle M. Parker

ROCK SPRINGS - Gayle M. Parker, 86, of St. Petersburg, Fla., and longtime resident of Rock Springs, died Sept. 24, 2003, at the Bon Secours Maria Manor where she had been a resident for one and one half years.

She was born on Oct. 28, 1916, in Pelahatchie, Miss., the daughter of the late Alma Chute and Leila Viala Hardy.

She graduated from the University of Wyoming with a bachelors degree in 1961.

She married Charles J. Parker in Laramie in August of 1949 and they were late divorced.

She was employed as a third-grade teacher for 20 years where she taught at Lowell Elementary and Overland Elementary until the time of her retirement.

She served two years in W.A.V.E.S. during World War II.

She was a member of the Alpha Delta Kappa, and active in the Womans Club. Her interests were sewing, dancing, and watching football.

Survivors include one son, Paul Parker and wife Charlotte of Rock Springs; one daughter, Karen Anderson of Salt Lake City; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and one son, John Parker.

Interment was at the Woodlawn Park cemetery in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Barbara Blanksvard

GREEN RIVER - Barbara Blanksvard, 60, of 505 McKinley St., Green River, died on May 31, 2004, at her home. A longtime resident of Green River and former resident of Wakefield, Mich., Mrs. Blanksvard died following an illness of four years.

She was born on June 24, 1943, in Wakefield, the daughter of the late Arthur and Antonette Biagioli Niemi.

Mrs. Blanksvard attended schools in Bessemer, Mich., and was a graduate of the A.D. Johnston High School with the class of 1961.

She married Carl V. Blanksvard on Feb. 23, 1963, at the Saint Sebastian Catholic Church in Bessemer, Mich.

Mrs. Blanksvard had been a manager for McDonalds restaurant for 13 years and retired in 2001.

Her interests included camping, scrapbooking, playing bingo, and spending time with her grandchildren.

She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

Survivors include her husband, Carl V. Blanksvard of Green River; one son, Carl A. Blanksvard and wife Rebecca of Rock Springs; one daughter, Ann Willoughby and husband Donnie of Rock Springs; one brother, Ronald Niemi and wife Gale of Mountain View; two sisters, Marie Nelsen and husband Conrad of Bessemer, Mich., and Victoria Niemi of Ashland, Wis.; six grandchildren, Robbie Willoughby, Crystal Willoughby, Tristin Willoughby and McKenzie Willoughby, and Christopher Blanksvard and Matthew Blanksvard; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and stepfather, John Yurchak.

Following cremation a memorial mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, June 4, 2004, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 900 Hitching Post Drive, Green River. A memorial rosary will be recited at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church. Friends may call at the church one hour prior to services.

Bernice M. Rice

ROCK SPRINGS - Bernice M. Rice, 82, of Rock Springs and formerly of Bishop, Calif., died on Friday, May 28, 2004, at 1:20 p.m. at Sage View Care Center. She had been a resident of Rock Springs since July of 1998.

Mrs. Rice was born on Aug. 20, 1921, in Saint Cloud, Minn., the daughter of Andrew C. Hoffman and Anna C. Friedrichs. She was the eldest of 11 children.

She married Albert Joe Rice on July 28, 1948, in Las Vegas. and he preceded her in death on Nov. 11, 1989.

Her interests included gardening, doing needlepoint and fishing.

She is survived by her daughter, Patricia L. Schilder and husband Bill of Rock Springs; three grandchildren, Michael I. McMurry of Reno, Nev., Lorelei McMurry of Pocatello, Idaho, and Joe Schilder and wife Trinity of Reno, Nev.; eight great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Joyce Robertson and husband Gene of Oregon, and Jeanette Austerman and husband Cliff of California; five brothers, Robert Hoffman and wife Diane of Idaho, John Hoffman and wife Barbara of Idaho, Joe Hoffman of Idaho, Andrew Hoffman and wife Linda of California; and Jim Hoffman and wife Judie of California; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and two sisters, Rita Hoffman and Ruth Wallace.

She wished to be cremated.

Following cremation a memorial mass will be conducted Thursday, June 3, 2004, at 10 a.m. at the SS. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church, 633 Bridger Ave., Rock Springs. The Rev. John Savio will officiate. Friends may call at the church one hour prior to services.
