Robert Jackson Bishopp

Robert Jackson Bishopp, 81, of Powell died Thursday, May 11, 2000, at the VA Hospital in Cheyenne after a brief illness.

Mr. Bishopp was born Aug. 31, 1918, in Fort Collins, Colo., and was raised on the family homestead acquired by his grandfather, Thomas Bishopp, in the 1870s at Virginia Dale, Colo., five miles from the Wyoming state line south of Laramie.

While attending college at Colorado State University, Bishopp was chosen as one of the top 100 ag students in the nation to act as a "Borden Boy" at the 1939 World's Fair in New York City.

After graduating from college in 1941, Bishopp traveled to Powell to become an agriculture teacher at Powell High School. He met Vivian Lorene Scott of Mantua Farms and they married " target="_blank">married Oct. 4, 1942.

In 1942 Bishopp served as a sergeant with the 11th Armored Division during World War II. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was wounded while crossing the Rhine River and received the Purple Heart. After recovering from his wounds, he returned to the front lines and was part of the liberating Army at Mauthausen Concentration Camp.

Upon his return to Powell, Bishopp coordinated a post-war relief effort to ship Powell pinto beans to Bastogne to help war-impoverished refugees.

During his teaching years, Robert and Vivian homesteaded Heart Mountain unit #818. As an educator, Bishopp's leadership activities included organizing and leading state FFA and Wyoming Vocational Association organizations.

He was the founding president of the Wyoming Vocational Association, and served as president of the National FFA Educators Association in 1949. He was one of the first instructors of the newly founded Northwest Community College.

In 1960 he retired from teaching and went into business, owning and operating the Powell Texaco Bulk Plant. During the next several decades, he was active on community and state levels, including the chamber of commerce, Kiwanis Club, school board, Powell Hospital Board, American National Bank Board and Union Presbyterian Church.

Offices and honors included Powell High School Teacher of the Year, National FFA Teacher of the Year, State Kiwanian of the Year, Wyoming Kiwanis Lieutenant Governor, chamber of commerce president, president of the 11th Armored Reunion Committee, and the Powell Honorary Alumni Award recipient in 1997.

Survivors include his daughters and their spouses Sheryl and Gayle Laine of Cheyenne, Corlienne and Murray Pennell of Cochran, Alberta, Canada, Glenya and Henry Barlow of Chandler, Ariz., Janell and Ron Black of Troutdale, Ore., Robyn and Mark White of Riverton, Lorri and Frank Brady of Colorado Springs, Colo., brother-in-law Art Franz and his children Brook and Nicki, 15 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife in August 1999, his parents Barton Glen Dale Bishopp and Addie Jackson Bishopp and siblings Virginia Bishopp Franz and George Bishopp.

Funeral services were Wednesday at Powell Union Presbyterian Church. Graveside services with veteran military honors followed.

Memorials may be sent to the Union Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund in Powell or the Powell High School FFA Association.

Alberta E. Martin

Alberta E. Martin, 82, died May 27, 2000, at West Park Long Term Care Center.

She had been a resident of Cody since July 1996 and was the sister of the late Wynona E. Thompson, a long-time Cody resident.

The daughter of Henry and Augusta Ewoldt, Alberta was born March 10, 1918, in Oakland, Iowa. She attended Oakland Public Schools and graduated from high school in 1936. After graduation Alberta entered the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa, and received a Bachelor of Arts in English and literature and later a Master of Arts degree.

In March 1941, Alberta married " target="_blank">married Russell R. Martin in Kahoka, Mo. While Russ was in service as an officer and pilot in the Navy during World War II, Alberta worked at an aircraft factory in Tulsa, Okla. During this time she also earned her pilot wings and aviation license.

Following the war Russ and Alberta moved to El Salvador in Central America, and then Hollywood, Calif., where Al worked in radio broadcasting. She and Russ then moved to Sioux City, Iowa, where she produced and starred in her own radio show, "Book Bandwagon." Al also wrote the advertising for Skagway Stones Inc.

She and Russ also lived in Reno, Nev., Phoenix, Ralston, Neb., and Allenspark and Longmont, Colo. Alberta was the director of Camp Fire Girls in Omaha and continued to write advertising for Skagway Stores.

Alberta enjoyed traveling and made many trips to Mexico as well as Florida. She especially enjoyed the western U.S. and Rocky Mountains. She greatly enjoyed the trips she made with her two sons during their childhood. Alberta had a sincere appreciation of and interest in the American West, especially American Indian culture.

She was also a voracious reader, gourmet cook and member of the American Association of University Women.

She is survivied by son Dennis Martin and wife Valerie Wayman, of Arlington, Va., daughter-in-law Lynn Martin VanCoevern of Sammamish Wash., grandchildren Colton and Aurora Martin and an adopted grandchild, Adrianne Jones. She will also be greatly missed by her special friends Patricia Gunter and Alice Yamada.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Russell, sister Wynona Thompson and son Michael Reed Martin, (Lt. USN).

No local services are planned. Cremation and interment will be in Longmont. Memorials in her name may be made to the National Wildlife Federation or AAUW.

Nancy Carol Guenther

Nancy Carol Guenther, a devoted daughter, sister, aunt and friend, gave up her battle with cancer May 27, 2000.

She was born in Chicago on Nov. 8, 1951, to Richard and Mary Guenther. She attended school in Whelling, Ill., for 12 years. After completing her education Nancy worked for Skill Power Tools. Nancy left Skill to pursue a new career with her sister and brother-in-law at their local Dairy Queen and worked there nine years.

She became an accomplished dog handler and joined her mother in showing and breeding "Nansue Collies." During her professional career Nancy achieved 14 American Championships and three American/Canadian Championships. She owned three CDX collies, and one of America's top winning collies for four years in a row. Nancy's collies also won the Kem Prestige Memorial Sweepstakes. Her prize collie was selected to model for World Book Encyclopaedia and Purina Dog Foods.

Nancy was a member of the Collie Club of America, Chicago Collie Club, Center State Collie Club and the Illinois Dog Breeders Association.

While visiting Wyoming with her parents she decided to move to the West. Her love for Yellowstone Park and the mountains kept her in Cody. Nancy loved animals and nature and enjoyed photographing both. Her favorite time was spent camping on the North Fork with her close friends and roasting marshmallows on the open fire.

Nancy's faithful companion, her dog Zac, was always by her side. Their relationship was special, always looking out for each other. Truly becoming a western woman Nancy acquired a horse named Jackie and recently a new colt named Wyoming.

In February 1992 Nancy went to work for Wal-Mart as a cashier. She was employed for seven years until her illness forced her to retire. She referred to Wal-Mart as her "second home" and the associates as her family. Her customers and co-workers found her to be quick-witted, jovial and always with a smile on her face. Her outstanding performance and great customer service won her the "Cashier of the Year Award."

Nancy was a collector of all things, from stray dogs to videos. One of her collecting accomplishments was her election to the Bradford Exchange Expert Panel. Memorabilia of her favorite football team, the Chicago Bears, adorned her bedroom.

Nancy is survived by her parents Richard and Mary Guenther, sister Susan and brother-in-law Ed Schubert, nieces Jennifer, Melissa and Courtney, great-nephew Andrew J. Fensterle, godmothers Carol Loeffer and June Jones, aunts and uncles, and her Wal-Mart family.

According to her wishes no services are planned. Donations may be made to West Park Hospital Hospice or the Buffalo Bill Dam Visitors Center.

Jacqueline Johnson Cuzzourt

Crista Michelle Cuzzourt

Former Cody resident Jacqueline Cozzette Johnson Cuzzourt, 41, and her daughter Crista Michelle Cuzzourt, 15, of Easley, S.C., were killed in a car accident Thursday, March 30, 2000.

Jacqueline was born in Fort Huachuca, Ariz., the daughter of Evelyn Shibley Glatter of Ralston and the late Thelbert Johnson. She graduated from Cody High School.

She was employed at Lockheed Martin Aircraft Center in Greenville, S.C., for 12 years.

She was a Navy veteran and served with the HS-I Helicopter Squadron as an aviation mechanic in Jacksonville, Fla.

In addition to her mother and stepfather Wally Glatter, she is survived by son Christopher Cuzzourt of Armuchee, Ga., uncles Ray and wife Laura Vallie of Cody, Al Shibley of Othello, Wash., aunts Lena and husband Ken Witcher of Joliet, Mont., Lillian and Bill Kroll of Bridger, Mont., and Yvonne Hadley of Billings, many dearly-loved cousins, friends Joyce Larson, Wilma Stipe, Rosemary Jansen, Linda Cater and special friend Jon Curran.

Cremation has taken place and services will be announced at a later date.

John L. Story

John L. Story, 83, of Cody died April 8, 2000, at the Long Term Care Center.

He was born Feb. 16, 1917, in King City, Mo.

He married " target="_blank">married Margaret Henderson on Oct. 20, 1937, in Fort Collins, Colo. In 1930 they moved to Laramie where he was section foreman on the railroad for 15 years.

The couple moved to Cody where he started a towing business, which he ran for almost 20 years. He then worked as a mechanic for several years in the Cody area.

John enjoyed camping at Newton Creek Campground, fishing in the Cody area, cars, woodworking and crossword puzzles.

Survivors include his daughter Toni and husband Tom Chambers of Cody, grandchildren Tracy and Brad Cauffman of Huron, S.D., Tommie and Vince Duarte of Mesa, Ariz., Torin and Carla Chambers of Cody, Tana and Matt Dunford of Louiseville, Ky., Tally and Chris Kenney of Billings, 17 great-grandchildren, sisters Jean Johnson of Alliance, Neb., Joyce Wright of Laramie and Josie Beagle of Chino Valley, Ariz., and brother Jim Story of Fort Collins.

He was preceded in death by his mother Leona Leota Cowles-Story, father Orland Leroy Story, wife Margaret Henderson Story, sister Bunny Story, grandson Tyler Chambers and great-granddaughter Emma Faith Chambers.

Viewing will be 5-7 p.m. Monday at Ballard Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the LDS Church on Wyoming Avenue. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery.

John Allen

Former Cody resident John Allen, 83, died quietly at his home in Cohasset, Mass., on March 29, 2000.

John was born and raised in Cody, the son of R.W. and Mary Allen. He graduated from the University of Wyoming and married " target="_blank">married Nancy Logan of Laramie in 1939.

During World War II, he served as a Navy officer in the South Pacific. In 1950 he moved to Wheatland as manager of the J.C. Penney store and in 1953 founded the Allen Furniture store.

He was an active member of the community and many service organizations, including the Lions Club, chamber of commerce and American Legion. He also served on the Planning and Zoning Commission.

As one of Wyoming's most active Masons and a 33rd Degree Mason and Knight of the York Cross of Honor. He twice served his home lodge as Worshipful Grand Master and was the Grand Master of the Masonic Lodge for the state of Wyoming, Grand Commander of the Wyoming Knights Templar and grand high priest of the Royal Arch Masons of the state.

He was a member of United Church of Christ of Wheatland and served as a moderator and interim minister on several occasions.

In 1998 he and his wife Nancy moved from Wheatland to Cohasset to live with their daughter and her family. In Cohasset, John was a member of the Chanticleers, a seniors coffee and breakfast group, and Konohasset Lodge AF&AM.

He is survived by his wife Nancy, son Dr. John and wife Anne Allen of Storrs, Conn., daughter Peggy and John Stervermer of Cohasset, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Donations may be made to the Knights Templar Eye Foundation or United Church of Christ in Wheatland.

Robert C. Bob Neely

Robert C. "Bob" Neely, 80, died Saturday, April 8, 2000, at his home in Cody.

He was born April 1, 1920, in Urey, Pa., the son of David M. and Edna Johns Neely.

He married " target="_blank">married Margaret "Peg" King on April 7, 1964, in Rapid City, S.D.

Bob moved to Wyoming in 1942 when he joined the Army and was stationed at the air base in Casper. He was a tailgunner in the Army Air Corps during World War II. After an honorable discharge in 1945 at the rank of staff sergeant, Bob joined Mountain States Power Co. as a lineman in Casper.

He served in several capacities during his 10 years in Casper including lineman, working foreman and serviceman. In 1955, one year after Mountain States merged with Pacific Power, he moved to Cody as a lineman. During the next 23 years he worked in Cody as a working foreman, journeyman serviceman, serviceman, service foreman, line working foreman in 1958 and district line foreman in 1970.

Due to an arthritis condition, Bob was off active duty from 1978 until his retirement after a 40-year career with Pacific Power and Light Co. in April 1985.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing and spending time at his cabin in Sunlight Basin. He loved spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife Peg of Cody, son Charles of Livingston, Mont., daughter Terry Young of Utah, stepson Rod King of Wright and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, son David, stepsons Ricky King and Butch King and brother William Neely.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Ballard Funeral Home. Visitation will be 1-2 p.m. prior to the service. Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 1280 Parker Road, Denver, 80231.
