Robert W. Carpenter

Robert W. Carpenter, 92, formerly of Powell, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2000, in Casper.

He was born June 30, 1907, in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of George E. and Ruth Stanley Carpenter.

He married " target="_blank">married Edith Lavon Hyde on April 16, 1926, in Valley Junction, Iowa. She preceded him in death on Sept. 29, 1996, in Powell.

Mr. Carpenter served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and was a participant in the Battle of the Bulge. He worked as a welder, iron worker and engineer. He lived in Wisconsin for 13 years and then to Casper. During his 25 years in Casper, he owned a trucking company.

He moved to Powell in 1992, where he lived until returning to Casper.

Survivors include sons, Merlin and Robert Carpenter, a daughter, Phyllis Branch, all of Casper; and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents; brother Harold, and sister Gertrude.

Funeral services will be noon Tuesday, Feb. 15, at Ballard Funeral Home in Cody. Interment will follow in Crown Hill Cemetery in Powell.

Gillian Brooks Fales

Cody High School senior Gillian Brooks Fales, 18, died Sunday at St. Vincent Hospital in Billings of injuries sustained in an auto accident Saturday on the North Fork Highway.

She was born Dec. 22, 1981, the third of four daughters born to North Fork outfitters Gary and Dede Fales at Rimrock Ranch.

An outgoing child, she made friends easily and helped the family with the outfitting business, riding most of the good trails, including the Thorofare.

Gilly was an outstanding swimmer and attended Olympic-caliber swimming and diving camps at the International Swimming Hall of Fame in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and the Ron O'Brien Diving Camp in Fort Lauderdale.

She qualified for state diving championships, but gave it up as the time conflicted with her drama programs.

Gilly's most recent theatrical performance was the lead in the Missoula Children's Theatre production of "Sleeping Beauty" on Feb. 5.

In addition, she recently received several all state acting awards in arena acting, lead acting, set design and make-up design.

Her interest in drama encompassed stage, set, make-up and acting.

Last summer she attended the University of Wyoming Summer High School Theatre Apprentice Program where she worked in different areas of theater and earned three credits in the introduction to theater class.

She was a "ray of sunshine" to everyone around her and will be remembered for her bright spirit and ability to make people laugh.

Survivors include her parents, sisters Vicky, Jesse and Jackie, grandparents, and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

A wake will be 7 p.m. Tuesday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Anthony's.

Richard Dick Witcomb

Richard "Dick" Witcomb, 86, of Red Lodge, died July 31, 2000.

He was born March 28, 1914, in Rouses Point, N.Y., the son of Walter Witcomb and Irene Slater Witcomb. He grew up in Verdun, Canada. Dick played center on the Montreal Aleuts football team and played hockey for the Montreal Canadians. He was a scout and coached for the Montreal Canadian farm teams.

Dick coached women's semi-professional softball in Los Angeles.

Dick was married " target="_blank">married to Alice Maloney 1952-81 and they raised five children. They lived in Provo, Utah, where Dick owned and operated B&H Pharmacy and coached hockey at BYU.

In 1964, the family moved to Arizona and he worked for Skaggs Drug Stores, Totem Department Stores and Yellow Front.

In 1981, Dick married " target="_blank">married Clare Moseley and extended his family to include Clare's three children.

In 1988, Clare and Dick retired to Red Lodge, where he enjoyed days of yard work, reading, socializing and especially golf with his Red Lodge friends and the seniors at Pryor Creek.

He will be remembered for his extravagant Christmas display of lights at his home.

Not a day went by that Dick didn't express a love of life and how happy he was. He was dearly loved and will be missed.

Dick is survived by his wife Clare, sons and their wives Paul and Dianna Witcomb of Sedona, Ariz., Kevin and Corinne Witcomb of Cottonwood, Ariz., Erik Moseley of Camp Verde, Ariz., daughters and their husbands Laurie and Roy Miller of Cody, Jody and Bill Swapp of Durango, Colo., Stacey and Ed Parker of Cody, Claudia and Kevin Hauser and Laura Moseley, all of Camp Verde, Ariz., his first wife AliceWitcomb of Cody, brothers Ralph and Les Elson, and sister Margaret Fitzgerald, all of Canada, 13 grandchildren and one great-grandson and many nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service was Saturday in Red Lodge. His family will scatter his ashes in the Beartooth Mountains at a later date.

Shawn Erik Searle

Former Cody resident Shawn Erik Searle, 27, died June 10 in a one-vehicle accident near Green River in Sublette County.

Shawn was born May 30, 1973, in Bigfork, Mont., and graduated from Cody High School in 1991. He attended Northwest Community College and Western Montana College.

Shawn had lived since 1996 in Jackson Hole, where he was a snowmobile and fly-fishing guide.

Shawn loved the outdoors and was fortunate to be able to make a living doing what he loved. He was an accomplished fly fisherman and snowmobiler. He lived life with a passion and found joy in each day. He exuded a love for life that was contagious.

The special times were those spent with family and friends. His passing leaves a void in his family and community. He will be missed.

Survivors include his girlfriend Jennifer Kocher and their dog, "Molly," parents David and Barbara Searle, Jean Richardson and Don Richardson, brothers David Knoepke, Kevin Richardson, sister Jessica Richardson, grandparents Patricia Searle, Betty Gaskill, and many aunts, uncles and cousins, including Tom, Judy and Nicole Kiely and Cliff and Debbie Gaskill.

Memorial services were June 13 in Jackson and June 15 in Butte.

Memorial donations may be made to the Rocky Mountain Snowmobile Guides Association, Box 1267, Jackson, 83001.

Gayle Adel Hartley

Gayle Adel Hartley, 83, died Aug. 10, 2000, at the Powell Nursing Home after a long illness.

Gayle was born May 7, 1917, to J.A. and Mabel Headington of Decorah, Iowa.

Upon her marriage to George Harold Hartley, the couple moved to Seattle. She was a cosmetologist in Iowa and Washington states.

After the death of her husband, Gayle moved to Cody in 1971 to be closer to her family.

Gayle was happy in her work at the MMJ Beauty Salon in Cody.

She devoted her life to her children and grandchildren and will be greatly missed.

Survivors include her stepmother Phoebe Headington, sister Nora Sharp and brother Milo Headington, all of Decorah, Iowa, daughters Jane Pawley of Cody, Virginia Payne of Powell, grandchildren Rob Cruz of La Quinta, Calif., N.J. Pawley of Park City, Utah, and Lynn Kondash of Cody, and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, sisters Phoebe Hensel, Maythel Headington and Brother Benjamin Headington.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.

William Harold "Bill" Rimbey

William Harold "Bill" Rimbey, 58, died June 30, 2000, at West Park Hospital.

He was born March 3, 1942, in Kansas City, Mo., to Clarence and June Rimbey.

He grew up in Cody, then moved to Las Vegas where he retired from the city of Las Vegas Fire Department after 26 years. After retiring he returned to Cody.

Survivors include sons Richard of Cody and Rodney of Las Vegas, brother George of Cody, and grandchildren Kenna, Clayton and William, all of Las Vegas.

Cremation has taken place and at his request, friends and family will gather at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Eagles Lodge.

Memorials may be sent to the West Park Hospital dialysis center.

Myrtice Humes Harris

Myrtice 'Myrt' Humes Harris, 80, died Saturday, July 1, 2000, at her home after a long illness.

She was born July 11, 1919, in Cut Bank, Mont., to Cleve and Mildred Freed Humes. She grew up in Cut Bank and out on the family wheat farm. She later attended school in Long Beach, Calif., and lived briefly in Alaska.

In 1944 she married " target="_blank">married Parker Harris and moved to Cody. She worked as a bookkeeper for Harris Trucking and Construction Co.

Myrtice enjoyed working "in the dirt," having flowers, ceramics, friends and family. She was an avid supporter of her grandchildrens' school and sports activities and loved traveling around the world.

Survivors include daughters Pamela and Rhonda, granchildren Justin and Toma Knapp, nephews Robert and Reid Humes and many dear friends.

Myrtice was preceded in death by her parents, a sister Joyce and brother Gordon.

Cremation has taken place and at her request there will be no services. The family suggests memorials be sent to Beehive Homes of Cody, 2716 Cougar Ave., Spirit Mountain Hospice, 707 Sheridan Ave., or a charity of choice.

James L. DuBose

James Leonard DuBose, 57, died Saturday, July 8, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Sheridan.

He was born Sept. 3, 1942, in Jackson, Miss., the only child of J. Leonard and Mabel Gussie McHan DuBose. He was raised and educated in Florida.

Jim joined the Air Force on June 14, 1960, and served in Vietnam as a crew chief. He was honorably discharged June 13, 1966.

On Feb. 6, 1970, he married " target="_blank">married Franchesca Byers in Golden Meadow, La.

Jim attended several mechanic schools and earned his master mechanic and A&P ratings. He worked for NASA on the Apollo project.

He retired from the Summit County School District in Frisco, Colo. Following his retirement they moved to Cody.

Jim's greatest enjoyment in life were his children. He also enjoyed repairing radios and traveling.

Survivors include his wife of Cody, son and his wife Kreig and Heidi DuBose of Aurora, Colo., and daughter April DuBose of Cody.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Private family services will be held at a later date.
