Elsie H. Miller

Elsie Hoisington Miller, 91, died April 1, 2001, in Soldotna, Alaska.

She was born Jan. 22, 1910, in Wakeeney, Kan., the daughter of Harry Leroy and Lucy Deaver Hoisington.

Elsie married " target="_blank">married Ted E. Miller on Feb. 21, 1938, in North Star, Neb. They moved to Cody the same month and he began working for L.K. Johnson. Ted died Aug. 2, 1967, in Cody.

Elsie married " target="_blank">married Carroll Miller on Nov. 24, 1976, in Huntsville, Ala. Carroll died Jan. 31, 1993, in Cody.

Elsie taught school in Nebraska and Wyoming. She was a loving wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, sister and friend. She shared her joys with many people who loved her in many ways.

She sang songs, recited poems, baked cookies, gave great hugs and was often seen patting the arm of friends in love, joy and sympathy. Elsie enjoyed quilting, embroidery, crochet, making pansy cards and other crafts.

Her family will always celebrate and cherish the time they were privileged to spend with her.

Survivors include eight step-children, Ronnie Miller of Hastings, Neb., Loren Miller of New Market, Ala., Linnet and spouse Don McGoodwin of Sheridan, Janice and Don Erwin of Kenai, Alaska, Maxine and Gary Mougeot of East Helena, Mont., Joan Miller of Helena, Connie Miller of Spokane, and Ernie and Julie Miller of Cody, 13 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands and sister Alice Lambert.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Thursday, April 5, at Ballard Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at United Methodist Church with Rev. Mary Barbee officiating. Internment will follow in Riverside Cemetery.

The family suggests memorial contributions in her memory to the Methodist Willing Workers, Irma Flat Mothers Club or Cody Senior Citizens Center.

JoeAnn Lawson

JoeAnn Lawson, 79, formerly of Cody, died April 5, 2001, at a Pocatello, Idaho, long term care facility.

She was born Jan. 2 ,1922, in Omaha, Neb., to Jacob A. and Bertha A. (Halstead) Good. She was raised and educated in the Omaha area.

JoeAnn married " target="_blank">married Charles D. Lawson on Jan. 5, 1946, in Omaha. She worked and became assistant vice president of Commercial Federal Savings and Loan for 20 years.

She lived in Cody for eight years before moving to Pocatello more than two years ago.

JoeAnn was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church and United Methodist Church in Cody. She loved to sew, cook, enjoyed everything about life and brought joy to anyone she met.

She is survived by her husband Charles of Pocatello, children Nancy Lawson of Omaha, Candice and spouse Hub Whitt of Meeteetse, Randall and Raylene Lawson of Aurora, Neb., Steven and Shirley Lawson of Pocatello, sister Reta and Joe and Giles of Orange, Calif., brother-in-law Walter and Gertrude Lawson of Lillian, Ala., sister-in-law Wilma Edwards of Scotia, Neb., nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, cousins and loving friends.

She was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.

A memorial service was held in Pocatello and another will be Friday in Omaha prior to internment there.

Jeanne Jones

Jeanne Jones, 65, died Monday, April 2, 2001, at her home in Canyon City, Ore.

Jeanne was born Oct. 13, 1935, in Cody to Virgil and Hulda Quick. She attended schools in Cody and Sydney, Neb., where she graduated from high school in 1953.

She married " target="_blank">married Don Jones on June 30, 1954, in Cody where they lived briefly before moving to Missoula, Mont., where he attended the university.

Don and Jeanne moved to Sumatra, Mont., in 1961 where Don began his teaching and coaching career. They moved to Oregon in 1962. Jeanne worked as a legal and high school secretary until her retirement in 1997.

She is survived by her husband Don of Canyon City, children Greg and spouse Kernie Jones of Albany, Ore., Toni and Mark Rieger of Beaverton, Ore., Lauri and Bob Armstrong of John Day, Ore., and Nicole Jones of Tigard, Ore., her mother Hulda Quick of Cody, six grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, sister Joann Muiller of Anchorage, Alaska, and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were in John Day and internment followed at Canyon City Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Humane Society or CASA through Driskill Memorial Chapel, 241 S. Canyon Blvd., John Day, Ore., 97845.

True E. Craig Jr.

True E. Craig, Jr., 68, died April 6, 2000, in Billings.

He was born Sept. 22, 1932, in Rawlins to True and Grace Craig.

True and his family moved to Cody in 1948 where he graduated from high school in 1950. The family owned Craig's Cafe 1953-65 when it became Coley's Cafe.

True served in the Air Force and was stationed in the Philippines. He returned to Cody and owned and operated C&H Electronics for several years. He pursued mining around Wyoming for many years. True had many interests and especially enjoyed collecting old movie memorabilia.

He is survived by sister Morna Raymond of Burlington, Wash., nephew Scott Raymond and spouse Tara and their son Barry of Cody, niece Paula Raymond and her son Dereck of Burlington.

Graveside services will be 3 p.m. Thursday, April 12, at Riverside Cemetery.

J. Guy Preator

J. Guy Preator, 83, died April 11, 2001, in Billings.

He was born June 30, 1917, in Burlington to Rodney Solomon Preator and Lotta Hankla in Burlington. Guy had four older siblings, Blanche, Helen, Rodney and Franz.

When he was 16 months old, his father died of pneumonia. His mother then married " target="_blank">married John Albert and his younger siblings, Maxine, Bob and Jack arrived.

He attended school in Burlington and Basin and graduated from Midwest High School.

Guy attended college until his step-father was killed. He then returned home to care for his mother and younger siblings on the family farm.

On Nov. 24, 1943, Guy married " target="_blank">married Ruth LeMaster and they moved to Cody.

Guy worked as a carpenter and started Preator Construction in 1975, specializing in oil field construction and services in Oregon Basin. He retired in 1983 and found time to really enjoy life.

He and Ruth were often the first on the square dancing floor and the last to leave. When they weren't dancing, Guy was bowling, fishing on horseback, hunting, riding and camping with his grandchildren.

Guy took up downhill skiing at age 56 with his youngest son Bruce. He skied until he arrived at the bottom of the hill with an injured knee, which he had replaced at age 74.

Guy planted a large garden each summer and in August would offer fresh picked sweet corn and bouquets of gladiolas. His warm smile and sincere affection gave him the love and respect of all who knew him. He will be dearly missed.

He is survived by his wife Ruth, children and their spouses, Margaret and Bob Nielsen of Provo, Utah, Joe Preator of Gillette, Richard and Phyllis Preator, Randy and Lea Preator and Nancy Preator, all of Cody, 14 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, siblings Rodney and Pauline Preator of Salt Lake City, Jack and Dede Albert of Hermiston, Ore., Franza Pearson of Apache Junction, Ariz., and Maxine and Jerry Jones of Mesa, Ariz.

Guy was preceded in death by his parents, son Bruce, brother Bob Albert and sisters Blanche House and Helen Ames.

Funeral services were Monday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Melvin Arthur O'Mara

Melvin Arthur O'Mara, 87, of Cody died April 13, 2001, at West Park Hospital Long Term Care Center after a courageous battle with cardio-pulmonary disease.

He was born in Cody on Feb. 5, 1914, one of 15 children of John and Della O'Mara.

Mel married " target="_blank">married Erma J. Marler in Billings in 1934. They had one daughter, Donna Lee.

He served in the Army and was discharged in 1946 after serving overseas.

Mel was employed by the Bureau of Reclamation on a survey crew as a rod man, level man and transit man. He once worked on the Heart Mountain Project. He was later a bartender at the Wonder Bar and the Eagles Club.

A special source of pride to Mel was his garden and beautiful lawn and yard, which he maintained for many years. He was also a great TV sports fan.

Mel was a lifetime member of the American Legion, VFW and the Eagles.

He is survived by his daughter Donna and husband Bill Holder of Cody, grandchildren Denise and spouse Clarence Anderson of Lovell, Kim and Bruce Hicks of Wasilla, Alaska, Brent and Bobbie Holder and Tim and Wendy Holder of Cody, great-grandchildren Sabra and Jesse Marchand of Anchorage, Alaska, Trent, Hannah, Emily and Lili Holder of Cody, sister Jean and Henry Royce of Seattle, sister-in-law Clara O'Mara of St. Louis, Mo., and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 53 years and brothers and sisters.

A memorial service will be at Ballards Funeral Home at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 17.

Memorials in Mel's name may be made to the North Big Horn Senior Center, 757 Great Western, Lovell, 82431 or a charity of choice.

Rosella May Rick

A memorial service for Rosella May Rick will be at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 21.

It will be at Church of God of Prophecy, 19th and Rumsey.

Rosella died Oct. 7, 2000, in Alvarado, Minn. She lived in Cody for many years before moving to Minnesota.

William E. Vehnekamp

William Edward Vehnekamp, 84, of Cody died April 20, 2001, in Billings.

He was born July 5, 1916, in Monticello, Ind., one of eight children, to William A. and Cecilia Kendall Vehnekamp.

He married " target="_blank">married Myrtle Inskeep in Indiana and had two children, Alice and William. He married " target="_blank">married Raetta Anderson in Sheridan and had three children, Elmer, Billy Ray and Charlene. He married " target="_blank">married Edith Trumbull and had two children Sharlene and Terri.

Bill left Indiana at age 16 to come to the Cowboy State and worked at Sheridan area ranches. He later became a brakeman for the Burlington Northern Railroad before serving his country as a marine in World War II.

For 13 years he was employed by Continental Oil Co. beginning as a pulling unit operator and working his way up as a field supervisor in Wyoming and Colorado.

In 1960 Bill came to the Cody area and bought Goff Creek Lodge on the North Fork. He and his family lived there for several years and during this time he acquired the Fishhawk Creek hunting camp. He purchased a ranch on the South Fork and outfitted for the next 20 years riding and hunting the hills he loved so much. He also owned D&V Propane on the West Cody Strip for several years.

After retirement Bill traded in his horse for a Harley-Davidson motorcycle and he and Edith toured the U.S. and Canada.

He enjoyed fly fishing, making furniture for his kids, playing on the Shriner's calliope in Fourth of July parades, helping friends paint buildings and most recently helping his good friend, Tommy Munns, work on airplanes. Bill looked forward to visiting old friends and traveling to see his family.

He was an honorary life member of the Wyoming Outfitters and Guides Association, Cody Outfitters and Guides Association and the Wyoming Wildlife Federation. He was also a member of Shoshone Lodge #21 AF and AM in Cody, York Rite in Cody, Scottish Rite in Sheridan, Kalif Temple in Sheridan, Kefar Shrine in Cody and VFW Post 1560 of Sheridan.

He is survived by his wife Edith, three daughters and families, Alice and Richard Buhl of Fountain Hills, Ariz.; Sharlene and George Stone of Butte, Mont., and Terri Vehnekamp of Haverhill, Mass., two sons and families, Elmer and Phyllis of North Manchester, Ind., and Billy Ray and Debbie of Metairie, La., seven grandchildren, four great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, one sister, one daughter, one son, two grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 25, at Ballard Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Bill's name may be made to the Kefar Shrine Travel Fund, 1138A Rumsey Ave., Cody.
