Janet B. Larsen

Janet B. Larsen, 77, died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001, at Deaconess Hospital in Billings.

She was born June 30, 1924, in Worland, the daughter of John L. and Isa Rae (Mitchie) Baird. She grew up on Gooseberry Creek and attended elementary school there. She graduated from Worland High School.

Following graduation she worked for the telephone company as a phone operator until her marriage to Ralph Larsen on Feb. 21, 1944, in Billings. The couple lived at the ranch on Wood River.

Janet enjoyed cooking and baking. She was always baking angel food cakes or carrot cakes for birthdays. She was famous for her New Year's Day dinners.

Janet was devoted to her family and was a good friend and was always doing for others.

She was a charter member of Meeteetse CowBelles, a member of the American National Cattlewomen, Wyoming Cattlewomen and Meeteetse Multiple Use Association. She served as an election judge and as head election judge for many years.

Survivors include her husband Ralph of Meeteetse, son Mervin Larsen of Meeteetse, daughters Helen Larsen of Powell and Sharon Kruger, Karen Gould and Linda "Abby" Herman, all of Meeteetse, brother Ralph Baird of Basin, sisters Flora Packer of Worland, Mary Fisher of Riverton and Lucy Wilkerson of Basin, nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Kenneth, Ivan, Thomas, Leon and Linsey.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 7, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Meeteetse. Interment will follow in Meeteetse Cemetery.

Those wishing may make donations in Janet's memory to Meeteetse Museums or a charity of choice.

Melvin L. 'Kelly' Maudlin

Former Cody resident Melvin L. "Kelly" Maudlin of Longmont, Colo., died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, at Longmont United Hospital.

He was born May 26, 1911, in Hill City, S.D., the only child of Melvin L. and Ivy (Endicott) Maudlin. When he was two days old, an uncle decided to call him Kelly, a nickname that stuck with him the rest of his life.

Mr. Maudlin spent his early years in Hill City, graduating from Hill City High School in 1927.

On July 18, 1934, he married " target="_blank">married Isabell Thorn in Fort Collins, Colo.

Following his high school graduation, Mr. Maudlin went to work for the summer on a survey crew, working in South Dakota and Wyoming before joining the Army and serving during World War II in the Philippines and Japan.

After being discharged, Mr. Maudlin resumed his career in construction moving to Riverton, then to Meeteetse and in 1959 to Cody where he lived the rest of his life, with the exception of seven years in Montana. He retired in 1973 at Libby Dam in Montana. He moved to Longmont in 2001.

Mr. Maudlin was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Cody and also belonged to the BPO Elks in Cody and was a 60-plus-year member of the Masonic Tin City Lodge No. 112 in Hill City.

He enjoyed fishing and hunting and spent many happy hours with friends in the field and on the water.

He was preceded in death by his parents and grandson Curt Maudlin.

Survivors include his wife, son Melvin J. (Helen) Maudlin and of Colorado Springs and their children Raymond of Evansville, Ind., and Bobby (Becky) Maudlin and their children Hannah and Joshua of Columbia, Texas, and younger son Marshall (Loretta) Maudlin of Longmont and their children Douglas of Aurora, Colo., and Kelly Anne of Westminster, Colo. He also is survived by numerous cousins.

Cremation was at Howe Mortuary and Crematory in Longmont. Memorial services were Aug. 13 at Howe Mortuary Chapel with Chaplain Mike Gerhardt officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association in care of Howe Mortuary.

Robert Lee Winterholler

Robert Lee Winterholler, 69, of Worland died Sept. 6, 2001, at Wyoming Medical Center in Casper.

He was born Nov. 22, 1931, in Worland, the son of John and Elizabeth Helen (Lungren) Winterholler. He married " target="_blank">married Delores Eckhardt and they were later divorced.

He was raised in Worland and attended schools there. He then worked on a farm for his uncle Adam Lungren before entering the Navy in 1951. He was stationed on a ship near Korea and China before being discharged in 1955.

He returned to Worland and worked for a well servicing company, on family farms and for the city of Worland. He lived in Casper for several years. He returned to Worland after his health failed and became a resident at the Wyoming Retirement Home in Basin two years ago.

He is survived by sons Tyler Winterholler of San Francisco, Calif., and Brad Winterholler of Douglas, brother Harold "Hal" (Caryl) Winterholler, formerly of Cody and now of Henderson, Nev., sister Helen Kirkpatrick of Daly City, Calif., and grandson John Winterholler.

Services were Monday at Riverview Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Worland. He was buried" target="_blank">buried at Riverview Cemetery in Worland.

Memorials in his name may be made to Pinnacle Bank, P.O. Box 789, Worland, 82401, for a fund yet to be decided upon.

Joseph Reinker

Joseph Edward Reinker, infant son of Michael E. and Jamie L. (Schmidt) Reinker of Cody, died shortly after his birth and baptism on Sept. 10, 2001, at St. Vincent Hospital in Billings.

He is survived by his parents, paternal grandparents Kenneth and Romell Reinker of Cody, maternal grandparents Terry and Marla Schmidt of Cody, great-grandmothers Phyllis Graybill of Ida Grove, Iowa, Helen Schmidt of Cody, and Dorothy Reinker of Michigan and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Private family services were Friday morning at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Cody. Interment was in Riverside Cemetery.

Florence L. Reed

Florence L. Reed, 90, died at Long Term Care Center on Monday, Sept. 10.

Albert Felsheim

Albert "Nooks" Felsheim, 83, died Sunday, Sept. 23, 2001, in Missoula, Mont.

He was born Sept. 16, 1918, in Cody to William and Catherine (Sobota) Felsheim. He was raised and attended school in Cody where he later attended school and worked in the dry cleaning business.

He married " target="_blank">married Jessie Shaw in 1964. Mr. Felsheim later moved to Whitehall, Mont., where he owned and operated Jefferson Valley Cleaners until 1975. He then worked on his ranch at Cardwell, Mont., retiring in 1979. He also was part-owner of JAG Lanes Bowling Alley in Whitehall.

Mr. Felsheim enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting, skiing, created beautiful woodwork, was a fabulous cook and loved to entertain. He liked making candy and delivering it to friends on the holidays. He was nicknamed by young children in town "Uncle Owl."

He was a member of the Elks Lodge, Knights of Columbus and was the head of St. Teresa's Franciscans.

Survivors include his wife Jessie Shaw Felsheim of Cardwell, sister-in-law Betty Felsheim of Cody, 16 nieces and nephews, two great-nieces and nephews, five great-great-nieces and nephews, cousin Helen Nickolai of Helena, Mont., step-daughters Afton Fell of Cardwell, Dixie and Richard Rennie of Boulder, Mont., Susanne and Leonard Huckaba of Cardwell, nine step-grandchildren, 14 step-great-grandchildren, two step-great-great-grandchildren.

Mr. Felsheim was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Irene F. Pond, Louise Glider and brothers Fred, George and James Felsheim.

Memorials in Mr. Felsheim's name may be made to Franciscans, St. Teresa's Parish, or a charity of choice.

Mass of the Resurrection was Sept. 26 at St. Teresa's Catholic Church in Whitehall. Interment with military honors followed in the South Boulder Cemetery in Cardwell.

LaVila E. Fulton

LaVila E. Fulton, 80, died Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001, at the West Park Long Term Care Center in Cody.

LaVila was born Jan. 22, 1921, in Yankton, S.D., to Henry Benjamin and Molley Moore Calkins. In 1943 she married " target="_blank">married Earl Lewis Fulton in Kansas City, Kan. Mr. Fulton preceded her in death in 1956. LaVila's life was taking care of others, her children, their friends, her garden, roses and all of God's creatures. Her love was given far and wide.

She is survived by two daughters, Carolyn Fulton of Cody and Tonya Johannsen of Wellington, Colo.

Services are pending and cremation has taken place.

Florence Merrill

Florence Merrill, 92, died at the Beartooth Hospital Long Term Care Center on Thursday, Sept. 20, 2001.

She was born Florence Viola Barberg, the seventh child of Isaac Arvid and Sophia Johanna (Barjari) Barberg's 12 children on June 13, 1909, in Cokato Township, Minn.

Florence graduated from high school and later graduated from teacher's training in Cokato and Minneapolis Business College. She taught in rural schools and worked as a bookkeeper.

When florence's sister became ill with a terminal illness, Florence helped raise five nieces and nephews.

In 1947, Florence married " target="_blank">married Gerald Merrill and moved to the Dry Creek Oil Field near Bridger, Mont. When Gerald retired in 1968, they moved to Belfry, Mont. Gerald passed away in 1980. Florence moved to the Beartooth Hospital Long Term Care Center in 1998.

Florence was an active member and supporter of the Belfry United Methodist Church, Belfry Senior Citizens Center, NuArt Club in Bridger and Belfry Friendship Club.

Florence is survived by her daughter, Gwen Gillen of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; step-son Robert and his wife Delores Merrill of Paoli, Okla.; granddaughter Lori Capshaw; grandson Lynn Merrill; sister Beatrice Kruger of Meeteetse; brother Ralph Barberg of Cokato, Minn; nieces and nephews she raised, Vernice Skiba, Luverne Ludwig, Joan Allison and David Jouppe, as well as many other nieces and nephews.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Red Lodge Community Church, United Church of Christ. A luncheon will follow at the church fellowship room. Interment will be at 4 p.m. in Monument Hill Cemetery in Thermopolis. Memorials may be made to the Bridger United Methodist Church or to the Belfry Senior Citizens Center.

Dahl Funeral and Cremation Service in Red Lodge is in charge of arrangements.

Harold L. Carpenter

Harold L. Carpenter, 60, died Wednesday, September 19, 2001, at West Park Hospital in Cody.

He was born May 5, 1941, in Lincoln, Neb., the son of Harold L. and Vera (Oakley) Carpenter.

Harold grew up in Lincoln where he attended school. He came to Cody in the early 1970s. He later moved from Cody to Wendover, Nev., to work as a cook. After 10 years, Harold returned to Cody and cared for his mother for many years until she moved to West Park Long Term Care Center.

Harold enjoyed mechanics and working on cars with his brother. He also enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family. A cook by trade, Harold always cooked the family's holiday turkeys.

He is survived by his mother, Vera Carpenter, of Cody; daughter Michelle, of Lincoln, Neb.; a brother Clancy (Jeanne) Carpenter, of Cody; and sister, Rockie Ann Covey Tucker, of Layton, Utah.

Harold was preceded in death by his father and a son, Harold Carpenter, Jr.

A memorial service for Harold L. Carpenter was 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 24, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 1719 Wyoming Avenue, Cody. Interment of cremains was at Riverside Cemetery.

Celia Merrill Newton

Celia Merrill Newton, 95, died Aug. 2, 2001, at her home in Greensboro, N.C.

She celebrated her birthday July 20.

Mrs. Newton had suffered with Alzheimer's disease for the past 10 years.

Mrs. Newton was born in Leroy, Kan., and educated in public schools in Kansas and Long Beach, Calif., Chaffey Junior College and the University of Redlands in California.

She was a talented soprano and taught vocal music in schools in Arizona and Lander. During her college years, and in later years, she sang the soprano solos in the Messiah at various California locations and at the University of Wyoming.

She sang in the chorus at Stanford University and the San Francisco Opera Company in presentations of Benjamin Britton's opera, Peter Grimes. She directed church choirs in Arizona, Wyoming, California and Nevada.

Following her husband's retirement in 1983 they lived in North Carolina, in Winston-Salem for 10 years and Greensboro for eight years. For the past 18 months they lived at the Well Spring Retirement Community in Greensboro.

In Wyoming and Nevada she served as president of the local Community Concert Association and in various other musical organizations. She was a member of the PEO Sisterhood and served as state president of that organization in Nevada in 1974-75.

She is survived by her husband Ernest Newton, children James (Marjie) Newton of Bellvue, N.C., Mariana Newton and Robert (Donna) Newton of Greensboro, 10 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be Aug. 7 in Greensboro. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to the PEO Foundation, c/o Jane Heggie, Treasurer, 11 Waxwing Cove, Greensboro, 27455.
