Elmer E. Blakesley

Elmer E. Blakesley, 86, died Jan. 18, 2002, at the West Park Long Term Care Center.

He was born Sept. 19, 1915, in Fromberg, Mont., the son of Floyd and Helen (Roberts) Blakesley. He married " target="_blank">married Geraldine Emerson on May 10, 1939, in Fort Collins, Colo.

Elmer worked in the oil fields. Prior to his marriage, he worked in Elk Basin, Sunburst, Mont., Cody, Whittier, Calif., Casper, Cut Bank, Mont., McFadden and Lance Creek.

On Oct. 9, 1940, a daughter Lari Mae was born to Elmer and Jerry. Lari Mae passed away Dec. 7 of the same year and the couple moved to Cody. In 1941 they moved to Oregon Basin where they lived until moving into Cody in 1958.

Elmer worked for Marathon Oil, 1941-64. During those years, son Ronald Gene and daughter Marlene Kay were born.

Following Elmer's retirement from Marathon, he became manager of the Sunset Motor Inn until 1983. They moved to their present home in 1982. Through the years, Elmer worked for the Buffalo Bill Historical Center, Hoffman Oil, Snyder Feed and Spicer Welding.

He was an active member of the Shoshone Lodge No. 21, AF&AM and the Shriners. He was active in senior citizen activities, Rolling Meals and as a member of the Presbyterian church. During his younger years he enjoyed fishing.

He is survived by his wife Jerry of Cody, son Ronald Blakesley of Orofino, Idaho, daughter and son-in-law Marlene and Mike Thiel of Powell, six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, at Ballard Funeral Home with the Rev. Pat Montgomery officiating. Interment of cremains and masonic services will follow in Riverside Cemetery.

Those wishing may make memorial contributions to the charity of their choice in Elmer's memory.

Helen M. Crawford Lewis

Helen M. Crawford Lewis, 97, died Jan. 21, 2002, at West Park Long Term Care Center.

She was born Sept. 19, 1904, in Paddock, Neb., the daughter of Floyd and Grace Crawford. She married " target="_blank">married John M. Lewis on Feb. 15, 1933, in O'Neill, Neb.

Helen was a homemaker and raised two children, Bob Lewis and Betty Ramsey. She lived in Nebraska until 1956 when she moved to Wyoming. Helen lived near her children until she died.

She enjoyed sewing, traveling, weekend outings and her family.

She is survived by her children Bob (Patsy) Lewis and Betty Ramsey, grandchildren David Lewis, Michael (Tonya) Lewis, Shawn Jackson and Dawn Guilliam, step-grandson Aric Pool and step-great-grandson Kristofer Pool, sister Ollie Shepherd, half-brothers and sisters Clara Truax, Veldon Crawford, Valaura Tarr, Ronald Crawford, Virgil Crawford and Velma Cassidy and stepmother Thirza Crawford.

She was loved and will be missed by all including special loved ones JoAnn Lewis, Sharon Phipps, Storm John and Brad Donner.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents and brothers and sisters Ted Crawford, Lawrence Crawford, Harold Crawford and Louise Hartland, half-sister Caroline Crawford and granddaughter-in-law Valerie Welch.

Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Ballard Funeral Home. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Ballard Funeral Home.

Friends may make memorial contributions to a charity of choice in Helen's memory.

Edward Lee Guthrie

Edward Lee Guthrie, 70, died at his Powell home Jan. 18, 2002.

Born" target="_blank">Born in Pleasant Hills, Ill., on Feb. 10, 1931, to Wilbert and Della Seymour Guthrie, he spent his youth living on the family farm in southeast Illinois, graduating from high school in Milton, Ill., in 1948.

After graduation Ed came to Powell to find work on local farms and fell in love with Wyoming. It was a love that would last a lifetime. Excelling in all kinds of sports, Ed loved any contest that involved a ball.

He attended Western Illinois University on athletic and scholastic scholarships. Following college and a tour of duty with the Army in Stuttgart, Germany, he returned to Wyoming. This time he would never leave, persuading his family to join him and his brother Art in Powell.

He married " target="_blank">married Katherine Billings at the bride's family ranch on the upper South Fork near Valley on June 6, 1954.

Ed began a lifetime of work for Amoco Oil Co. as a water truck driver in Midwest, continuing work with Amoco for 35 years before retiring as a production and drilling foreman in 1986. He continued to work part time as an oil field consultant.

Following his love of sports, Ed coached Babe Ruth and American Legion baseball in Powell for 16 years, serving as a mentor for many athletes and producing enduring and valued friendships. He continued to support youth athletics throughout his life and, after retirement, developed a passion for golf, which would keep him active and fit.

Ed loved to fish and hunt on the upper South Fork with his father-in-law Glen Billings. He took great pride in maintaining his home and yard and enjoyed having fun with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife Katherine of Powell, daughters Ann (Orin) Winders of Green River and Barbara (Hal) Dicks, brother Larry (Glenda) Guthrie and sister-in-law Marie Guthrie, all of Powell, mother-in-law Harriet Billings of Green River, four grandchildren, one great-grandchild, many nieces and nephews and friends around the world.

His mother, father, brother Art Guthrie and sister Mary Guthrie preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 25, at St. John's Episcopal Church in Powell with the Rev. Patterson Keller presiding. Interment of ashes will follow at Valley Cemetery.

Memorials to Powell American Legion Baseball or Valley Hospice will serve to continue his dedication to community service.

Timothy Alfred Jensen

Timothy Alfred Jensen, 39, died Jan. 21, 2002, at his Cody home following a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born July 17, 1962, in International Falls, Minn., the son of Alfred and Donna Potter Jensen.

Tim was raised in International Falls and attended schools there. While at International Falls High School, he was active in track and football.

He married " target="_blank">married Elizabeth Jewel Webb on April 19, 1982, in Bowman, N.D. They moved from Bowman to Cody 11 years ago. He was a lease operator for Citation Oil and Gas.

Tim was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing, hunting and camping and had an adventurous spirit. He enjoyed playing softball, baseball and cards. Tim loved being with his family and was a member of the Methodist church.

Survivors include his wife Elizabeth of Cody, daughters Jessica, Kimberly and Alyssa, all of Cody, parents Alfred and Donna Jensen of International Falls and brothers Brad and Jerry of International Falls and Dale of Hudson Wis.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, at Ballard Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church with the Rev. Mary Barbee officiating. Cremation will follow.

Junior M. Gideon

Junior M. Gideon, 68, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at his home in Cody after a courageous battle with cancer.

Junior was born Jan. 13, 1935, in Taney County, Mo. He was one of 11 children born to Rex and Eva Gideon. He spent his early years in Missouri helping his father and brothers in different kinds of work.

He left home in the early 1950s to go to Colorado to work in the oil field. There he met Imogene Meineke, and they were married " target="_blank">married Aug. 2, 1954. He continued to work the oil fields of Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas and finally Wyoming. He retired in 1991 due to a back injury.

Junior enjoyed talking oil field with his sons, who followed his footsteps in this profession. He was an avid sportsman and loved hunting and fishing. He was a woodworker in his spare time, creating many pieces he then would give to a member of the family or a friend. Junior enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Imogene, his parents Rex and Eva, brothers Lewis, Jay and Roy and sisters Cupie Hursh, Inez Smith and JoAnn Smith.

He is survived by a daughter Shelia (Cliff) Tillotson, sons Marvin (Vickie) Gideon, Jeff (Kara) Gideon, grandchildren M.J. Gideon, Shane, Ryan and Jennifer Scheid, Barbara and Jeffery Gideon, sisters Goldie Cary of Kansas, Edna Melton, Loretta Schwyhart and Peggy Gideon of Missouri and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, at Ballard Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Spirit Mountain Hospice, 707 Sheridan Ave., Cody.

Mary Jo Hlavacheck

Mary Jo Hlavacheck, 63, died Jan. 25, 2002, - her birthday - at Powell Nursing Home.

She was born in Cody to Henry and Maudie Hlavacheck.

She attended Powell High School where she excelled in sewing and won many 4-H awards. She became involved in theatre and designed costumes for many plays.

She attended Northwest College for two years and graduated with honors from the University of Wyoming. She taught school for two years in Olathe, Colo. Mary Jo started the masters program at the University of Colorado in 1963, designing costumes for a production of Macbeth for her degree.

She married " target="_blank">married Gary McNulty in 1970 and moved to his ranch near Glenwood Springs, Colo. She became, like her father, a meticulous gardener. She gave birth to two babies who both died within minutes of birth. She named them Ethelred and Galadriel from the novel "Lord of the Rings," one of her lifetime passions.

After her divorce she moved to Glenwood Springs and worked as advertising manager at the Glenwood Post. She is remembered by co-workers for her many awards and her ability to read a book a day.

As a result of failing health following surgery to remove a brain tumor, she moved back to Ralston to live with her mother until entering the nursing home where she spent the rest of her life.

In her lifetime Mary Jo touched many people who will remember her as the joyful and fun-loving center of her circle of friends.

She is survived by aunts Betty Shellady of Enid, Okla., and Anna Belle Adams of Houston, Texas, cousins Carolyn Schumacher of Cheyenne and Charles Sigler of Columbia Falls, Mont., and many friends.

Visitation will be noon-1:30 p.m. Thursday at Miratsky-Easton Funeral Home in Powell. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. with burial to follow next to her parents in Crown Hill Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Powell Nursing Home.

Donna Mae Gewecke Cordiner

Former Cody resident Donna Mae Gewecke Cordiner, 79, died Dec. 2, 2002, in Gresham, Ore., of complications from Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases.

She died at the assisted living facility where she had resided three years.

Donna Mae was born July 8, 1922, in Hebron, Neb., to Hubert H. and Effa Mae Gewecke. When she was 5 her father, who was employed by the Union Pacific Railroad, was transferred to Evanston.

He graduated from Evanston High School and Hebron Junior College. She then worked for the United Airlines personnel office in Cheyenne, later transferring to the Flight Training Center at Stapleton Airport in Denver.

At one time she worked for the Justice Department and the Immigration and Naturalization Department.

Her parents moved to Oregon, where she joined them in Portland in 1944. She worked for Hyster Co. until the end of World War II.

In 1946 she married " target="_blank">married John S. Bereman in Denver. While he attended the University of Colorado at Boulder, she worked at the Samsonite luggage factory and at CU. The couple then moved to Cody, where John was offered an engineering position.

Their first son Hubert Earl was born in 1950 and became the favorite of his godfather, Tom Trimmer.

In 1951 John was called to service in the Korean War and the young family moved to Virginia, but later transferred to Camp Pendleton, Calif., before he was assigned to duty.

Donna Mae returned to her Cody home and in January 1952, daughter Rebecca Mae was born. Barbara Susan was born in 1954, Michael Lee in 1959 and Bethany Kay in 1961.

Donna Mae spent happy years skiing at Sleeping Giant Ski Area and living at their cabin on Green Creek. She was active in scouting, bridge club, PEO, Community Concerts, Republican women, volunteering and attending First Methodist Church.

John and Donna Mae divorced in 1965.

In 1966 she married " target="_blank">married Frank S. Cordiner, who worked for Marathon Oil in Cody. The couple was transferred to Littleton, Colo., in 1967, where they lived until being transferred to Casper.

In Casper she was active in PEO, and was president in 1973. The couple was then transferred to Anchorage, Alaska. While there she enjoyed skiing, golf, dancing, panning for gold and attending the Fur Rendezvous, and traveled in their motor home.

She was a volunteer at the information booth at the Anchorage International Airport. The couple spent eight years in Alaska, returning to Casper in 1981. They were divorced in 1986.

At that time Donna Mae moved to Greeley, Colo., where she volunteered at the Greeley Historical Society, sang with Sweet Adelines and played in a kazoo band that entertained at the senior center and nursing home.

In 1993 she became unable to care for herself, and moved to Littleton to a group home near her daughter Barbara. She moved again in 1997 to Gresham, Ore., to live in an assisted living facility near her daughter Becky.

Although confined to a wheelchair, she spent her last years taking field trips, attending plays and traveling in a small plane to the coast or to Seattle to visit her son Michael. She visited each of her children in September 2001. On the day she died she had 18 visitors, as well as her daughter Becky.
