Veda 'Ruth' Young

Veda "Ruth" Young, 83, died May 27, 2002, at West Park Hospital.

She had been a resident of the Long Term Care Center for 18 months.

Ruth was born Veda Ruth Glendenning in Blockton, Iowa, on March 7, 1919. The daughter of James Blair Glendenning and Nellie (Zentz) Glendenning, she had two older brothers, Albert and Harold, both of whom are deceased, and one younger sister Mary Viola (Martorano).

When Ruth was about 1 year old her family moved to a small community in Colorado where she was raised and graduated high school.

Ruth met and married " target="_blank">married Harvey John Adolph in 1938. They had two children, Harvey Richard "Dick" in 1939 and Gloria Jean (Richers) in 1941. The couple divorced in 1942. Ruth then met and married " target="_blank">married Roy Ray Matney in 1942. They had four children, Mary Louise "Ginger" Smith in 1943, Billy Ray in 1945, James Allen deceased in 1947 and Shirley Ann (Solberg) in 1949. Ruth also raised Roy's daughter, Nella May (Smith) and granddaughter Lyndia Kay (Loring).

Ruth also worked full time as a nurse's aid at St. Luke's Hospital in Denver and made time for her hobbies - gardening and crocheting. In 1954 Ruth and Roy moved to Casper where after 20 years of working as a nurse's aid she retired from Casper Memorial Hospital. In 1964, Roy died.

In 1966 Ruth met and married " target="_blank">married Kenneth Royal Young. In 1972 Ruth and Ken moved to Willow Springs, Mo., and they moved to Glenrock in 1993.

In 1996 they moved to Cody to be close to family.

Ruth had 15 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

She will be missed by her husband and family.

Cremation has taken place.

Vesta Erickson Rasmussen

Vesta Erickson Rasmussen, 84, of Burlington died peacefully in West Park Hospital on June 3, 2002.

She was born in Fairview, Utah, on Jan. 8, 1918, the daughter of Erick and Mary Edna Erickson.

She married " target="_blank">married Spens Rasmussen in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Manti Temple on July 23, 1940. They raised their family in Burlington.

Forty years later she and her husband retired and moved to Spanish Fork, Utah, where Spens died in October 1983.

Vesta moved back to Burlington in 1993. She was active in the LDS church where she served as president of the relief society and worked in various other organizations. She loved her family and always thought of them first. Her family appreciates the example she gave to them in enduring life's trials. Vesta enjoyed many trips with her sisters and sister-in-law.

She is survived by her children Neil (Claudia) Rasmussen of Nyssa, Ore., Eva (Drew) Loy Haun of Salt Lake City, Gary (Colette) Rasmussen of Parma, Idaho, and Paul (Martha) Rasmussen of Burlington, sister Delta Martinelli of Price, Utah, 16 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, five brothers and four sisters.

The family notes the care she received at the dialysis center at WPH and from Otto-Burlington people and EMTs for the care they provided.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the LDS church in Burlington. Viewing will be at 10 a.m.

Anna Bell L. Smith

Former Cody resident Anna Bell L. Smith, 79, died in Elko, Nev., on May 31, 2002.

She was born in Pleasanton, Kan., on May 12, 1923, the daughter of Roy and Maude (Landon) Thomas. She grew up in Pleasanton, working on various farms and raising chickens.

Anna Bell and Leroy Smith were married " target="_blank">married in Casper on Jan. 2, 1959. LeRoy worked for Gilpatrick Construction, and they lived in several areas, including Cody.

The couple later moved to Lander where Leroy worked for the city and Anna Bell worked as a cook at Bishop Randall Hospital and Lander Valley Medical Center. When she retired she was head cook.

Anna Bell enjoyed cooking, crocheting, her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and her dog Sassy. She was a member of the Baptist Church.

Survivors include daughter Anieta Wilkerson of Elko, step-sons Chet Smith and Harvey Smith of Hanna, step-daughters Shirley Smith of Montana, and Kathy Smith of Thermopolis, brothers Roy (Lorraine) Thomas, and Jim Thomas, all of Powell, and sister Cleo Yetter of Thermopolis, three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, many step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, brother Melvin and step-daughter Darlene.

Funeral services were at Hudson's Funeral Home in Lander. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Cody.

Memorial gifts can be made to the American Heart Association care of Hudson's Funeral Home.

Merle W. 'Jake' Rimbey

Merle W. "Jake" Rimbey, 89, died June 4, 2002, at Powell Valley Healthcare.

He was born June 4, 1913, in Deerfield, Mo., the son of Oscar M. and Anne Lewis Rimbey.

Jake's family moved to Powell when he was 3 years old. He grew up in Powell and attended schools there. Following graduation he served in the Navy 1934-38 on submarine duty.

Jake married " target="_blank">married Irene May Malde on April 26, 1941, in Billings. The couple farmed in the Powell area until their retirement in 1964. Following retirement, they lived in Cody until recently, when they moved back to Powell.

Even though Cody was considered their home base, the couple traveled extensively. Jake worked at several places, including four years at Pahaska Tepee near Cody and Squaw Valley resort at Lake Tahoe. He also worked for the Heart Mountain Irrigation District for eight years.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing and guided for Roy Coleman and Bob Adams. Jake also enjoyed watching boxing and football. He was a life member of the Powell BPOE (Elks) and the Powell FOE (Eagles).

He is survived by his wife Irene of Powell, son John (Nancy) Rimbey, granddaughter Amy (Dave) Tardiff and sisters Thelma Churchill and Wilma Groen, both of Powell.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters Dorothy Farmer, Doris Shaulis and Delores Rimbey.

In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place and no services are planned.

Dr. John C. Mitchell

Dr. John C. Mitchell, 78, died May 18, 2002, at his home in Morton, Ill.

He was born June 6, 1923, in Watertown, S.D., to Charles and Lena Mitchell. He married " target="_blank">married Jessie Rohlfing on April 14, 1949.

He served in World War II and the Korean War.

He retired after working as a dentist in Morton for 36 years.

Dr. Mitchell is survived by his wife, son Charles (Judy), daughter Julie, sister Mina Webb of Cody and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister, Mina's twin.

Services were May 20 with burial in Hillcrest Memory Gardens in Morton.

Virginia H. Oliver

Former Cody resident Virginia H. Oliver, 83, died April 27, 2002, of natural causes while being taken care of and living with her youngest son, John Oliver of Billings.

She was born in 1919 in Chicago. In her late thirties she married " target="_blank">married F. Russell Oliver. They were married " target="_blank">married almost 25 years when the family moved to Cody in 1969. Mr. Russell died in 1975.

Before retiring in 1985, Mrs. Oliver owned and operated the Sports Spectrum sporting goods business in Cody for 16 years, the first six years of which was with her husband.

Mrs. Oliver was known for her involvement in the Republican Women's Club, Retail Merchants Association and as a Buffalo Bill Historical Center volunteer.

She was an award winning magazine editor for Conrad Hilton of Hilton Hotels in Chicago. She also worked for several years for Minneapolis-Honeywell which designed the first auto-pilot for B-17 bombers. She was among the first women to test the device and report on it while in flight.

She was a loving woman, full of compassion and generosity. A believer in Jesus, she shared those beliefs by her actions.

She is survived by her sons Russell Oliver and John Oliver, granddaughter Angela (Oliver) DeChard and family, grandson Russell J. Oliver Jr., and great-granddaughters Isabella and Annabella.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, May 2, at First Presbyterian Church in Cody. Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery.

Henrika Ria Paulina Christina Lammers

Henrika Ria Paulina Christina Lammers, 74, died April 27, 2002, in the home of her grandson, surrounded by family and friends.

Ria was born in Rotterdam, Netherlands, on Jan. 11, 1928, to Johannes Adrianus and Elisabeth Meeling Koster. She married " target="_blank">married Berend Lammers, and later they divorced.

They immigrated to the U.S. in 1956, and struggled to get work, learn English and the ways of the New World to proudly become citizens in 1965.

Ria was a longtime devoted member of First Christian Reformed Church, touching the lives of many with her caring ways. She loved to talk to people just to get to know them, always giving them a big dose of her "vitamins," better known as hugs.

Her family was her first priority. She was proud of the fact that she raised her three children as a single parent during a time when that was not common. "Oma" (Grandma in Dutch) was an active participant in the lives of each family member, never missing the opportunity to proudly boast about them.

Ria was a professional seamstress and upholsterer, taking pride in producing a quality product. She loved nurturing flowers to beautify her garden. She was thrifty and frugal before it was considered recycling. She enjoyed traveling to Europe to visit family and friends. She was proud to be an American but never lost her heritage or native tongue.

She is survived by her children Bea Thompson of Laramie and Cody, Petronella (Don) Boose of Gig Harbor, Wash., and Evert Lammers of Salt Lake City, grandchildren Cameron, Patrick and Dwight Thompson, all of Denver and formerly of Cody, six other grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, seven step-children, brother Henk Koster of Netherlands, and sisters Lois Van Dyke of Price, Utah, and Freida Heuvel of Netherlands along with many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. May 2 at First Christian Reformed Church in Salt Lake City. Internment will be at Memorial Estates Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Ria's memory to First Christian Reformed Church, 801 East 900 South, Salt Lake City, 84105.

The family notes the tender care of Harmony Home Health and Hospice in Tooele, Utah.

Edna Lohrenz

A memorial service for Edna Lohrenz, who died at age 87, will be at 11 a.m. Monday, May 6, 2002, at Cody United Methodist Church.

Marjorie Louise Meier

Marjorie Louise Meier, 80, died Sunday, April 28, 2002, at her home in Cody.

She was born Sept. 29, 1921, in Schuyler, Neb., the daughter of William and Jessie Morgan Pirrie.

She married " target="_blank">married Charles Meier. Marjorie and Charles traveled from job to job for most of their married " target="_blank">married life and raised five children. After many years they retired in the state they loved, Wyoming.

Marjorie liked to go for a ride in the mountains. She enjoyed doing embroidery work, reading (especially about history) and the flowers in her yard. She was a collector of many items, including milk glasses, cups, plates, bells and pictures. Marjorie loved people to bring her stuffed animals and talk to her rag doll.

She always enjoyed visits from family and friends. She loved to cook and entertain. She also loved to stop and talk to mothers with newborn babies. Marjorie lived across the street from an elementary school and enjoyed watching the school children play. She enjoyed all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was a member of United Methodist Church and the Eagles Auxiliary.

She is survived by her husband Charles of Cody, daughters Nadine Weldin of Macon, Mo., Kay Gunderson of Cody, Shirley Craig of Airville, Pa., and Janice Hutton of Bel Air, Md., son Michael Meier of Green Acres, Wash., sisters Mary Ballinger and Dorothy Bates, both of Cody, nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were May 3 at Ballard Funeral Home with the Rev. Mary Barbee officiating. Interment followed at Riverside Cemetery.
