Franklin Delano Hardee

Franklin Delano Hardee, 75, of Washougal, Wash., died May 31, 2008, at Southwest Washington Medical Center in Vancouver, Wash., from congestive heart failure complicated by Parkinson's disease. Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Straub's Funeral Home in Camas, Wash. Mr. Hardee was born in Worland on May 26, 1933, to Ruby and Homer Hardee. He grew up in Sheridan graduating from Sheridan High School, where he was Senior Class president and active in basketball and football. He spent two years in the Army Paratroopers. After the Army he moved to Anchorage, Alaska, where he lived for 33 years working for Wien Airlines and the state Airport Lands and Leasing department. He married Anne Rothweiler. He retired to Washougal in 1992. He was preceded in death by a brother, Homer Bud Hardee. He is survived by his wife; a son, Lorne Hardee of Wasilla, Alaska; a daughter, Lenore Pullman of Vancouver; a brother, Merle Hardee of Gillette; two sisters, LaVonne Nelson of Sheridan and Glenda Conley of Sterling, Colo.; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Memorials may benefit Northwest Parkinson's Foundation, 1206 123rd Ave. S.E., Bellevue, WA 98005.

Elma M. Mooney

Elma M. Mooney, 92, of Sheridan died May 25, 2008, in Sheridan Manor. A Christian wake service will be 7 p.m. June 9 at Kane Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. June 10 at Holy Name Catholic Church with the Rev. Ron Stolcis officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Memorials may be made to Sheridan Dog and cat Shelter, 84 East Ridge Road, Sheridan, WY 82801 or to Holy Name Catholic Church, 260 E. Loucks St., Sheridan.

Catherine Dockery

Catherine Brooks Yonkee Kay Dockery, 77, of Parkman died May 28, 2008, at the family home. A private gathering will be later to spread Mrs. Dockery's ashes on the ranch. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Dockery was born Sept. 3, 1930, to Adolph and Ruth (Brooks) Yonkee. She attended Slack School and Sheridan High School. After high school, she attended MacMurray College in Springfield, Ill., for two years. She returned to the family ranch after college. She was Sheridan Rodeo Queen at the Bots Sots Stampede in 1950. She married Aaron Leroy Dockery on Oct. 3, 1959. They managed the Yonkee Ranch for the rest of their lives. She enjoyed being with family and friends, especially her grandchildren. She also enjoyed the outdoors, working in her garden, riding her horse, working on the ranch, playing cards, and listening to music by George Strait. She was preceded in death by her husband in 2005. Survivors include a son, Aaron of Sheridan; four daughters Lillian Durham of Safford, Ariz., Alma Kersh of Cheyenne, Nancy Johnston of Dayton, and Annie Butler of Parkman; a sister, Ada Lou Yonkee of Sheridan; 13 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Big Horns, 1401 W. Fifth St., Sheridan, WY 82801.

Roberta Ann English

Former Sheridan area resident Roberta Bertie Ann English, 61, of Boulder, Mont., died July 24, 2008, at St. Peter's Hospital shortly after being diagnosed with cancer. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be 6 p.m. today at Seventh-day Adventist Church in Helena, Mont. A memorial service in Sheridan will be later. Born July 6, 1947, in Cody to Robert and Sarah Sally English, she grew up in Montana, Wyoming, Maryland, Canada, Oregon, and California. She graduated from Laurelwood Academy in Gaston, Ore., in 1965. She married Tom Carlson in Helena. They divorced. She later married Mort Walker while working as a dispatcher for the Montana Highway Patrol. In 1973, she moved with her family to northern Virginia. She divorced again in 1982. She returned to Montana with her children and worked multiple jobs to support her family. She joined the U.S. Forest Service and was transferred to Gresham and John Day, Ore., Helena and White Sulphur Springs, Mont., and Sheridan. She was an Elvis fan and adopted many pets. She enjoyed the company of her family and friends and was happy to retire in May so she could spend more time with family. A sister, Mary Ellen Houtchens, preceded her in death. Survivors include two daughters, Tammi Sjoden of Townsend, Mont., and Robbi Dale of Kremmling, Colo.; a son, Tom Carlson of Helena; her mother, Sally Houtchens of Boulder; five brothers, Richard English of Hot Springs, S.D., David Houtchens of Chattanooga, Tenn., Michael Houtchens of Kalama, Wash., Larry Houtchens of Cheyenne, and Charles Houtchens of Brush Prairie, Wash.; a sister, Julie Byard of Garden Valley, Idaho; six grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorials may benefit St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital., 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or a local animal shelter by donation or adoption. Arrangements are with Hagler Anderson Funeral Home of Helena.

Steven Arthur Engel

Sheridan native Steven Arthur Engel, 39, of Gillette died July 22, 2008, near the Medicine Wheel in the Big Horn Mountains. A prayer service will take place 7 p.m. Friday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. A memorial service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Phil Wold officiating. Born Aug. 8, 1968, in Sheridan to Horace W. (Bill) and Narleen (Dronen) Engel, he grew up and attended schools in Sheridan and graduated from Sheridan High School. He attended Sheridan College and graduated from the University of Wyoming. He worked at Photo Finish for a time, then for Intermountain Labs as an environmental technician. He transferred with Intermountain Labs to Gillette in January. He enjoyed small children, especially his niece and nephew, as well as hunting, fishing, shooting, and the movies. He also loved dogs, especially his dog Kaz. He is survived by his parents of Sheridan; a sister, Christine Engel of Greensburg, Pa.; a niece and nephew; and numerous extended family members. Memorials may be made to Sheridan Animal Shelter, 84 East Ridge Road, or Trinity Lutheran Church, 135 Crescent Drive, Sheridan.

Frank Arellano

Frank Arellano, 58, died July 28, 2008, at his Sheridan home after a two-year fight with cancer. A Christian wake service will be 7 p.m. today at Kane Funeral Home with the Rev. Tom Ogg officiating. Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Friday at St. James Catholic Church in Douglas with the Rev. John Savio officiating. Interment will be at Douglas Park cemetery with military rites. Born April 20, 1950, in Rawlins to Joe C. and Anna Marie Arellano, he grew up in Wyoming on the Mortan and Colt Track ranches and graduated from Douglas High School in 1969. He married Clarissa Corbine in October 1991. They moved to Denver, where he managed a low-income housing project. In 1993 they moved to Sheridan, where he worked for the VA Medical Center. He was drafted into the United States Air Force and served as a sergeant. He was an administration specialist/general's aide. He was stationed at Francis E. Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne and was honorably discharged in 1974. He received the National Defense Service Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Service Medal, the Air Force Longevity Service Medal, and the Air Force Good Conduct Medal. He was a proud Vietnam veteran. After his return from service, he worked in the oil field, from pipelining to the rigs. He enjoyed camping, fishing, rides to the Big Horns and Story, telling stories, his friends and family, and his cat, Henrietta. He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Charlotte Corbine; his mother; two sisters, Margaret Hinemen and Christy Schell, both of Douglas; and two brothers, John Arellano of Arvada, Colo., and Gilbert J. Arellano of Douglas. He was preceded in death in 1993 by his father and in 1974 by his sister Adelina Sue Arellano of Douglas. Memorials may benefit the Oncology Center, 532 Val Vista St., Suite 103, Sheridan, WY 82801.

Betty Jean Engstrom

Betty Jean Engstrom, 50, of Buffalo died July 26, 2008, at Johnson County Health Care Center in Buffalo after a seven-year battle with cancer. Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Buffalo with the Rev. Peter Friese officiating. Visitation will be at the chapel from 1 to 9 p.m. Thursday and 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Friday. Burial will be at Willow Grove cemetery in Buffalo with graveside services following the funeral. Born April 1, 1958, in Deadwood, S.D., to Chester and Arvilla Marshall, she started school in Deadwood before moving with her family in 1971 to Buffalo, where she attended Buffalo High School and worked various jobs. She married Brian Engstrom on May 21, 2002, in Buffalo, and they resided in Buffalo. She worked for Montana-Dakota Utilities, Sun Light Credit Union, and D.J.'s Thriftway. She retired due to ill health in 2006 and continued living in Buffalo until the time of her death. She is survived by her husband; her parents of Buffalo; two sons, Cody Engstrom of Sheridan and Jeremy Cuka of Casper; a stepson, Brooks Engstrom of Boise, Idaho; a daughter, Shana Cuka of Buffalo; a stepdaughter, Maria Engstrom of Bismarck, N.D.; two brothers, Chester Junior Marshall of Rapid City and Gary Marshall of Apple Valley, Calif.; three sisters, Delores Neavill of Sheridan, Leona Moser of Yankton, S.D., and JoAnn Thomson of Rapid City; and seven grandchildren. Agnes Van Auken

Agnes Van Auken, 95, of Buffalo, died March 30, 2008, at the Faith Regional Medical Center in Norfolk, Neb. She was sister of Peggy Kepford of Sheridan. Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Aug. 8 at Adams Funeral Home Chapel, Buffalo, with the Rev. Morgan Silbaugh officiating. Interment will be in Willow Grove cemetery. Born May 30, 1913, in Julesburg, Colo., to Joanna Willits Corpe and Thomas Masson Corpe, she grew up on the family homestead and attended elementary school in Mayoworth, Johnson County High School, and the University of Wyoming. She was married May 27, 1933, to Leland Van Auken, whom she met at a dance at the Tie Camp in the Big Horns Mountains. Mr. Van Auken died in May 1964, and Mrs. Van Auken then moved to Chicago and later Salt Lake City, where she worked as a hospital ward clerk. She retired in 1985 and moved to Norfolk to live near her daughter and family. She was a gardener and loved writing letters and reading. In addition to her sister, survivors include a son, Barney Van Auken of Buffalo and Seattle; four daughters, Charlotte Silbaugh of Ashland, Ore., Joanna Taylor of Buffalo, Helen Miskimen of Brighton, Colo., and Anne Lange of Norfolk; a brother, Thomas Charles Corpe of Belen, N.M.; 14 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Gerald V. Tub Garland

Gerald V. Tub Garland, 79, of Buffalo died July 23, 2008. Visitation will be 1-9 p.m. Sunday at Adams Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tom Saur officiating. Burial will be in Willow Grove cemetery with the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars in charge of military graveside rites. Born May 29, 1929, in Great Falls, Mont., to Vern and Hanna Garland, he attended school in Buffalo and graduated from Johnson County High School in 1949. He was married June 27, 1952, in Buffalo to Edith Green. They resided in Buffalo. After a divorce, he married Eva Knighten Howard. They also lived in Buffalo. He joined the Army in 1951 and served in Germany. He worked on ranches for several years and in 1965 started Garland Welding, which he owned and operated until his death. He enjoyed riding, roping, fishing, hunting, and his work, friends, and customers. He loved being outdoors, working livestock, and spending time in the Big Horns. He is survived by daughter, Chris Vasco, and sons Bill, Kelly, and George Garland. Donations may be made to Meals on Wheels in care of Adams Funeral Home at 351 N. Adams Ave., Buffalo, WY 82834.

Michael C. Steel

Michael Charles Steel, 33, of Sheridan died July 16, 2008, in a boating accident at Tongue River Reservoir. A celebration of his life will be 4 p.m. today at Sheridan Country Club with the Rev. Kevin Jones officiating. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Born to William and Molly Steel on Aug. 24, 1974, in Buffalo, he attended school in Sheridan and graduated from Sheridan High School in 1993. He attended Carleton College in Northfield, Minn., where he received dual Bachelor of Arts degrees in political science and education. He graduated with honors in 1997. He married his high school sweetheart, Amy Rochelle Jordan, at the Big Horn Equestrian Center on July 25, 1998. He attended University of Wyoming College of Law, where he received his Juris Doctor degree with honors in 2001. While in law school, he was an editor of the Law Review. He was a member of the order of Coif, a national honorary society, and also a partner in the law firm of Lonabaugh and Riggs in Sheridan. He was a member of the Sheridan County Bar Association, the Wyoming State Bar Association, the Montana State Bar Association, and past member of the American Bar Association and the Association of Trial Lawyers of America. He was admitted to practice before all state and federal courts in Wyoming and Montana, as well as the United States Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit. He played football and baseball at Carleton College and also enjoyed competing in basketball, softball, and racquetball. He coached his children and other children in Sheridan. He is survived by his wife, Amy; sons Coy Michael Steel, Dane Meyers Steel, and Brock Jordan Steel; daughter Talia Rochelle Steel; his parents, Molly Steel of Sheridan and William and Nancy Steel of Sheridan; and his brother, Heath Steel. He was preceded in death by his grandparents Chuck and Marian Meyers Brown, Ralph Meyers, and William and Marie Steel. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Michael Steel Memorial Foundation for the education of his children, in care of Donovan McComb, P.O. Box 6499, Sheridan, WY 82801 or to Sheridan County Search and Rescue in care of Pete Husman, 54 W. 13th St., Sheridan.

Albert Paul `Big Al' Herren Jr.

Albert Paul Big Al Herren Jr., 58, of Sheridan died July 3, 2008, at his home. Graveside memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. July 31 at Fort Logan National cemetery, Denver. Born Sept. 23, 1949, in Ochelata, Okla., to Albert Paul and Locita Faye (Gott) Herren, he attended schools in Ochelata. He served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam and received a National Defense Service Medal with three Bronze Service Stars and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. He enjoyed playing his guitar, riding his motorcycle and building cars. He was godfather of Ann M. LeBlanc of Casper. He is survived by son William Herren of Denver; brother Eugene Herren; and three sisters, Loy Dene of Cecil Grove, Okla., Leta Fay Vankirk of Suma, Wash., and Lana Baumgardner of Colorado Springs, Colo.

Mary K. Alderson

Mary Kobielusz Alderson, 91, of Sheridan died July 22, 2008, at Sheridan Manor. Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Stolcis officiating. Interment will be at Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Born Aug. 12, 1916, on Dutch Creek to John and Anna Kobielusz, she worked at Bones Bros. Dude Ranch at Birney, Mont., where she supervised cooking, dining, and cabin crews. She married Allen Big Bones Alderson on Aug. 8, 1969. They lived in Sheridan and enjoyed entertaining and card parties. She is survived by a sister, Anna Varcalli of Sheridan; and stepdaughters Dorothy Tarter of Ashland, Mont., and Alice MacCarty of Story. Memorials may benefit Holy Name School Foundation or a charity of the donor's choice.

Elizabeth Pelava

Former Sheridan resident Elizabeth L. (Betty) Pelava, 77, died July 4, 2008, at her home in Zimmerman, Minn. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in St. Paul, Minn., on July 9. Born March 31, 1931 in St. Paul, she resided in Sheridan from 1973 to 1977. She spent most of her life raising her seven children and enjoying her grandchildren. Her husband of 58 years, Robert, preceded her in death. She is survived by her children Gail Stovall of Sacramento, Calif., Laurien Rahimi of Dayton, Jan Nicodemus of Zimmerman, Minn., Robin Goodrich of Dayton, Mary Walk of Ranchester, Teressa Pierce of St. Paul, and Bruce Pelava of Arden Hills, Minn.; 19 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Arrangements were with Muller Bies Funeral Home of St. Paul.

Norma Adams

Buffalo resident Norma Adams, 84, died July 21, 2008, at her home. She and her husband, Bill, owned and operated Adams Funeral Home and Ambulance Service for 35 years. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Adams Funeral Home with the Rev. Tom Saur officiating. Visitation will be 1-9 p.m. Sunday and 8:30-9:30 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Private interment in Willow Grove cemetery will follow the funeral. She is survived by her husband; daughter Ann Huber of Buffalo; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Mark, one sister, and three brothers. Donations may be made to Bread of Life Food Pantry in care of Adams Funeral Home, 351 N. Adams Ave., Buffalo, WY 82834.

Roger L. Mohns

Former Dayton rancher Roger L. Mohns, 79, died at his home in Buffalo on July 19, 2008. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Arlington Memorial Park cemetery in Rockford, Ill., with the Rev. Janet Wold officiating. Born July 25, 1928, in Rockford to Leslie and Doris Mohns, he grew up life-guarding and racing sailboats on Lake Geneva in Wisconsin and learning to fly. He graduated from Rockford East High School in 1946 and from Carthage College in 1950. He married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Jacobson, on Sept. 30, 1950, and they resided in Rockford. He helped build the family business, Damascus Steel Co., in Rockford, which was sold in 1967. He first visited Wyoming in 1961 and moved with his family to the Dayton area in 1968. He owned and operated two ranches near Dayton and owned many other properties throughout North America. Under an appointment by Gov. Stan Hathaway, he spent six years working to improve Wyoming's airport and air-transportation system. As a founding member and director of Wyoming Bancorp, he expanded the company's banking system into many Wyoming towns, and the company was eventually sold to Key Bank system. He was involved with many wildlife conservation and service groups in the Sheridan area and was an avid big-game hunter and fisherman. His love was water-fowling, which led him to improve riparian habitat and create wetlands on all of his properties. He is survived by his wife; sons Steven of Big Horn and David of Buffalo;, daughter Lesley Mohns Armstrong of Sheridan; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister. Donations may be made to Ducks Unlimited in care of Adams Funeral Home, 351 N. Adams Ave., Buffalo, WY 82834.

Edythe Kuzma Araas

Edythe Kuzma Araas, 86, of Sheridan died July 20, 2008, at her home. A Christian wake service will be 7 p.m. today at Kane Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Name Catholic Church with the Revs. Thomas Ogg and Ron Stolcis officiating. Interment will follow in Sheridan Elks cemetery. Born July 19, 1922, at Hays Ranch in Monarch, she grew up on Slater Creek Ranch and graduated from Sheridan High School. She graduated from the University of Wyoming with honors and completed her master's degree in linguistics at the University of Wisconsin. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, Sheridan Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Council of Catholic Women, Association of Women Scholars, and was a library docent. Later in life, she studied art with Jim Ryan. She married Fred J. Araas on Sept. 7, 1943, and they settled in Sheridan. She was an artist, dancer, swimmer, runner, and tennis player. She is survived by her husband; daughters Suzanne Araas Vesely of Fairfield, Iowa, Teresa E. Araas of Sheridan, and Mary E. Araas-Wright of Rochester, Minn.; sons Fred J. Araas III of Sheridan and John F. Araas of Sheridan; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by sisters Della Adelaid Kuzma and Elizabeth "Betty" Kuzma McMillan and brothers Tom Frank Kuzma and John David Kuzma. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Dialysis Unit at Sheridan Memorial Hospital, 1401 W. Fifth St., Sheridan, WY 82801; Sheridan Senior Citizens Center, 211 Smith St., Sheridan; or the Sheridan Dog and Cat Shelter, 84 E. Ridge Road, Sheridan.
