Vi Johnson

Vi Johnson, 74, Sheridan, died July 9, 2008, at her residence. At her request, no services are planned. Memorials may benefit Hospice of the Big Horns, 1401 W. Fifth St., Sheridan, WY 82801. Born Sept. 8, 1933, in Beaver County, Okla., to Samuel F. and Ida Ruby (Armstrong) Carrico, she grew up in Laverne and Gage, Okla., graduating from Gage High School in 1952. She married C.J. Nash Jr. in September 1952, and he preceded her in death. She then married Roy Johnson in September 1961 in Clovis, N.M. Mrs. Johnson was a telephone operator, receptionist, and worked in a hospital, but she considered being a homemaker, wife, and mother most important. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, fishing at Alcova Lake, and especially spending time with family and friends. In addition to her first husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter and sister. Survivors include her husband; two sons, C.J. Nash III of Casper and Gary Nash of Sidney, Mont.; a daughter, Redena Schmidt of Overland Park, Kan.; two brothers, Charles Carrico of Choctaw, Okla., and Archie Carrico of Parkman; two sisters, Virginia Baldwin of Gage and Helen Huckins of Thomas, Okla.; and three grandchildren. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Leslie Crandal Matteson

Leslie Crandal Matteson, 81, of Buffalo died July 9, 2008, at Johnson County Health Care Center. The funeral service is 10 a.m. Monday at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Buffalo with the Rev. Jon Orwig officiating. Visitation is from 1-9 p.m. Sunday at Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Buffalo. Burial and graveside services are 3 p.m. Monday at Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Born May 2, 1927, in Buffalo to Leslie and Nellie (Morgan) Matteson, he grew up in Buffalo and graduated from Johnson County High School in 1945, when he joined the Army and served in Japan during the occupation following World War II. After receiving an honorable discharge in November 1946, he returned to Buffalo and worked for the Wyoming Highway Department and then with Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph as a lineman for 38 years. On June 2, 1951, he married Nadine Allen in Sheridan, and they made their home in Buffalo. He retired from Mountain Bell Telephone in 1986. He was a life member of the Elks Lodge, St. Luke's Lutheran Church, and a member of several community organizations. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, carpentry, and spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife; son Everett Matteson of Sheridan; daughter Terrill Matteson of Sheridan; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother Verl Matteson, daughter Verline Matteson, and son Mike Matteson. Donations can be made in his memory to St. Luke's Lutheran Church or Amie Holt Life Line Program in care of Adams Funeral Home, 351 N. Adams, Buffalo, WY 82834.

Leoda P. Heath

Leoda P. Heath, 67, of Leiter died July 7, 2008, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Cremation has taken place and no services are scheduled. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Born April 23, 1941, in Lovell to Thelda Dorn, she married Charles Heath in Sheridan on July 4, 1959. She enjoyed genealogy, cooking, bingo, animals, crocheting, camping, fishing, collecting cookbooks, and travel. She loved spending time with her family. She is survived by her husband; four children, Duska Kirk of Manahawkin, N.J., Debbie Herbert of Homer, Alaska, Kerry Heath of Buffalo, and Michelle Voogd of Sheridan; 11 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials may benefit Quiet Rest cemetery in Story.

David D. Huff

Sheridan resident David D. Huff, 95, died July 7, 2008, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Thursday in the Elks section of Sheridan Municipal cemetery with Elks Lodge officers officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Huff was born Oct. 29, 1912, to Frank and Winnie (Shacklett) Huff, early homesteaders in the Upton area. He helped his father with ranching and his mother with the general store she operated in Upton. He attended Upton schools and graduated from Upton High School in 1931 and then worked at the Upton Refinery that his parents built. Later, he operated trucks and heavy equipment in the bentonite business. On Oct. 3, 1932, he married Thelma Ponson of Moorcroft in Deadwood, S.D. The Huffs moved to the Banner Ranch at Banner in 1951 and stayed until 2002, when they moved to Sheridan. Mr. Huff was a life member of Sheridan Elks Lodge 520, Upton Masonic Lodge 38, and Kalif Shrine. He was the last surviving charter member of Story Lions Club. He is survived by his wife; son Robert Huff of Sheridan; daughter Winnie Borgialli of Buffalo; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. Memorials may benefit a charity of the donor's choice.

Eva Van Ness

Former Sheridan resident Eva Van Ness, 96, died June 16, 2008, at her daughter's home in Chattanooga, Tenn. A memorial service was held June 18 at the Ridgedale Baptist Church in Chattanooga, and her ashes will be buried at Big Horn cemetery at a later date. She was born Jan. 19, 1912, in Big Horn to Fred and Ina (Abbott) Schneider. She married David Van Ness in Sheridan on May 28, 1938. Both before and after her marriage, she taught in rural schools in Sheridan and Johnson counties, and in 1942, the couple moved to Anaconda, Mont., where Mr. Van Ness worked for the Copper Co. for 30 years, while Mrs. Van Ness taught kindergarten in their home. After Mr. Van Ness' retirement, they returned to Sheridan until his death in 1986, when she moved first to Illinois and then to Tennessee to be near her children. She loved horses and took her last ride in 2004 at the age of 92 on a visit to Sheridan. She also liked to sew; although her eyesight was failing, she continued to make things. She is survived by her son Phillip of Savoy, Ill.; daughter Shela Van Ness of Chattanooga; and two granddaughters. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Fern Trembath, Mary Bowen, and Edel Moore.

Jeanette Sneath Cox

Jeanette Sneath Cox, 93, of Orem, Utah, died Feb. 13, 2008, in Orem, Utah. A memorial graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday at Sheridan Municipal cemetery with the Rev. Don Derryberry officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Memorials can be made in her name to the Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library, 335 W. Alger St., Sheridan, WY 82801, with proceeds earmarked for the Wyoming Room.

Virginia "Ginny" Wiley

Virginia "Ginny" Wiley, 62, of Sheridan died June 26, 2008, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Cremation has taken place, and per her instructions, no services are scheduled. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements. She was born Sept. 16, 1945, in Sturgis, S.D., to Harvey and Evelyn Whitman. She graduated from Sturgis High School and received a bachelor's degree from the National College of Business in Rapid City, S.D. She married Bruce Wiley in Sheridan on Dec. 7, 1987. She enjoyed sewing and quilting, and she ran her own fabric business. She is survived by her husband of Gillette; daughter Candi Fernau of Ainsworth, Neb.; sisters Shirley Gregory and Peggy Rice; brothers Wayne Whitman and Dean Whitman, and one grandson. She was preceded in death by her daughter Michelle Willey-Egly. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials in her name to P.O. Box 2310, Gillette, WY 82717.

Patricia A. Bacon

Patricia A. Bacon, 77, of Sheridan died June 25, 2008, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Cremation has taken place, and per her request, no services are scheduled. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements. She was born Dec. 27, 1930, in Sheridan to William and Maytie Hughes. She graduated from Sheridan High School. She married Loren "Porky" Bacon in Sheridan. She enjoyed painting, crafts, and cooking. She is survived by her son Scott Affeldt of Camarillo, Calif.; brother Eugene Hughes of Albuquerque, N.M.; and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, her son Robert Affeldt, her daughter Vicki Jean Hall, her brother William "Bill" Hughes, and her sister Katherine Owens. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in her name to the American Heart Association, 710 2nd Ave., Suite 900, Seattle, WA 98104.

Robert W. Palmero

Robert W. Palmero, 70, of Sheridan died June 26, 2008, at the Sheridan VA Medical Center. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at Kane Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Stolcis officiating. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements. He was born Oct. 23, 1937, in Penrose, Colo., to Lawrence and De'Marie Palmero. He served in the Army and was honorably discharged in 1962 and was employed at the Sheridan VA Medical Center. He is survived by his son Clint Palmero; daughters Lynell Legerski and Audra Palmero; numerous brothers and sisters (family unable to identify names of all brothers and sisters); and seven grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in Palmero's name to the American Cancer Society, 907 Poplar Ave., Suite 185, Casper, WY 82601.

Larry Dean Harbel

Sheridan native Larry Dean Harbel, 63, died Aug. 21, 2008, at his home near Upper Marlboro, Md., his family announced. Services were Thursday in Upper Marlboro. Born July 30, 1945, in Sheridan to Charles and Helen Harbel, he grew up on a dairy farm and cattle ranch in Sheridan County. He attended Sheridan High School, Sheridan College, Northwestern University, and the University of Michigan and earned his bachelors degree from Bob Jones University. He received his Master of Business Administration degree in finance from George Washington University. Mr. Harbel worked for the OHare Inn, Inner City Baptist Church, Eastern Association of Christian Schools, A.B. Dick, and Bray and Scarff before going into private practice. He also ministered at Pacific Garden Mission and helped start a nursing home ministry in Chicago. He was actively involved at every church he attended and served on deacon and trustee boards. He also taught Sunday school and was an AWANA (Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed) evangelism youth leader for more than 25 years. For several years, he ministered at Boys Village in Cheltenham, Md. Most recently, he was involved with Child Evangelism Fellowship of Washington, D.C., and Youth Services Inc. and was a committed supporter of Gospelink Inc., with which he was able to build a seminary in Zambia. He served as president of the Anne Arundel Chapter of the American Institute of Certified Professional Accountants and was the most recent president of the Maryland AICPA chapter. He is survived by his wife, Twyla; three children, Melody Dillon of Crofton, Md., Holly Harvey of Clarksville, Tenn., and Brian Harbel of Owings Mills, Md.; his mother of Sheridan; a brother, Jerry Harbel of Petersburg, Va.; a sister Judi Adams of Ridgway, Colo.; and seven grandchildren. Memorials may benefit Gospelink, 220 Royal Palm Beach Blvd., Royal Palm Beach, FL 33411.

Charles Olson

Charles Olson, 83, Sheridan, died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Peters Episcopal Church, the Rev. Kevin Jones officiating. Born April 29, 1925, in Fort Robinson, Neb., to John and Alice Olson, he graduated from Sheridan High School in 1943 and enlisted in the Army that same year. He spent 2 1/2 years in the Pacific Theater participating in the Philippine liberation and winning the Bronze Star and three Bronze Campaign Stars with Purple Heart. He married Betty Sadler on Feb. 19, 1950, in Sheridan and retired in 1980 as a U.S. Postal Service mail supervisor. Important to Mr. Olson, after his family, were the Masonic lodges and Shrine, golf, and a computer to track the stock market. He was known for keeping busy and helping others. Survivors include his wife; three children, Steve Olson of Basin and John Olson and Kathy Flack, both of Sheridan; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. In lieu of flowers, memorials may benefit Shriners Children Travel Fund, P.O. Box K, Sheridan, WY 82801. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home.

Martha Obermueller

Martha Frieda Sophia Kellner Obermueller, 88, Sheridan, died Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2008, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Pastor Kirk Peters officiating, with arrangements by Kane Funeral Home. Born Sept. 8, 1919, in Wilcox, Neb., to Henry and Julia Kellner, she married Reinold Obermueller on April 25, 1943, in Lincoln, Kan. She worked many years with her husband in their country grocery store in Kansas. They moved to Greeley, Colo., in 1970 and to Sheridan in 1974. They opened Yellowstone Modular Homes in 1975. Mrs. Obermueller also worked at J.C. Penney, Wal-Mart, and with her son, Brian, at Sheridan Homes. She loved watching NASCAR, and Jeff Gordon was her favorite driver. She also enjoyed crocheting, dancing, fishing, playing cards, and bowling. She was preceded in death by a daughter Jackie in 2005; a grandson Corey in 1991; her husband in 1982; five brothers; and six sisters. Survivors include four children, Darla Lotz and Brian Obermueller, both of Sheridan, Peggy Landis of Lancaster, Pa., and Candy Morris of Centralia, Wash.; 15 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials may benefit Immanuel Lutheran Church, 1300 W. Fifth St., Sheridan, WY 82801.

Donald McKelvey Sr.

Former Sheridan resident Donald A. McKelvey Sr., 80, died Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2008, at his home in Thornton, Colo., his family announced. Memorial services are 4 p.m. today at Horan & McConaty Family Chapel in Denver with burial 10 a.m. Thursday in Denvers Fort Logan National cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Judy A. McKelvey; six children, Donald R. McKelvey, Barbara Jean Miller, Shannon E. Hall, Donald A. McKelvey Jr., Diana L. Russell, and Kathy S. Waltman; 19 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

Shirley Conley

Shirley Conley, 85, Sheridan, died Sunday, Aug. 24, 2008, in at St. Vincent Hospital in Billings. Funeral services will be at Kane Funeral Home on Friday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Ron Stolcis officiating. Interment will follow in Sheridan Elks cemetery. Born in St. Louis to William Jr. and Stella (Griffin) Klosterman on May 31, 1923, she attended the Academy of Visitation Catholic School in St. Louis and then enrolled at the University of Missouri, where she met her future husband, Charles Conley. With Mr. Conley gone during World War II, she worked in the laboratory at a TNT factory while continuing her studies. After she graduated with a degree in English, the couple married and moved to the Conley ranch in Otter, Mont. They lived there many years until Mr. Conleys ill health brought them to Sheridan. Mrs. Conley was preceded in death by her husband in 1998 and by two brothers and two sisters. She is survived by her son, Dan; two nephews; and a niece. In lieu of donations, the family encourages sending floral arrangements in her memory.

Shirley Velos

Shirley Velos, 59, Ranchester, died at her home Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2008. Memorial services will be at First Christian Church on Friday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Doug Goodwin officiating. Cremation arrangements were made with Kane Funeral Home. Born Jan. 18, 1949, in Sheridan to Robert and Nina Adams, she married Corky Velos in Buffalo on July 19, 1977. Over the years she worked at Browns Drug Store, Kendrick Mansion, and the Energy Inn. Mrs. Velos loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, and with her friends. She also enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, reading, gambling in Deadwood, S.D., cooking with her grandkids, and collecting Indian art. She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband; three children, Shawn Stewart of Sheridan and Jim Velos and Koko Borzenski, both of Ranchester; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; her siblings, Sandi Cooper of Richmond, Ky., Judy Horsley of Sheridan, and Rob Adams of Grand Junction, Colo.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Sylvia Williams

Sylvia Williams, 83, Sheridan, died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. Philip Wold officiating. Born Oct. 8, 1924, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Arthur and Cecelia (Goldberg) Lipson, she grew up and attended schools in Des Moines and married James A. Williams on March 21, 1974, in Princeton, Mo. She managed a Mister Donut shop in Des Moines. The couple had lived in Sheridan since 1975. Mrs. Williams was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. She loved travel and spending time with her family and friends. She was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters. She is survived by her husband; one brother, Jay Lipson, of Des Moines; one sister, Fredia Pearl, of West Des Moines, Iowa; and eight grandchildren. Memorials may benefit the American Cancer Society, 907 N. Poplar, Suite 185, Casper, WY 82601.

Dr. Fred Lindemann

Dr. Fred Lindemann, 69, Big Horn, died Monday, Aug. 25, 2008, at St. Vincent Hospital in Billings. Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Name Catholic Church, the Rev. Carl Beavers officiating. Born Sept. 13, 1938, in Wolf Point, Mont., to Rex and Mary Lindemann, he worked as a radiologist at Sheridan Memorial Hospital from 1968 until retiring in 1998. Dr. Lindemann enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golf. Two sons, Sean and Paul, preceded him in death. Survivors include four sons, Garrett Lindemann of Big Horn, Ward Lindemann of Colorado Springs, Colo., Barry Lindemann of Las Vegas, and Cole Lindemann of Anchorage, Alaska; three sisters, Kay, Mary, and Alicia; a brother, Bill Lindemann; and seven grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations may benefit the Dr. Fred Lindemann Memorial, c/o First Interstate Bank, 4 S. Main St., Sheridan, WY 82801. Arrangements are with Kane Funeral Home.
