Melvin J. Duerst

Melvin J. Duerst, 86, of Sheridan, died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2008, at Sheridan VA Medical Center. A celebration of life will be 1 p.m. Oct. 25 at Cornerstone Church, 4351 Big Horn Ave. Kane Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Duerst was born April 20, 1922, on a dairy farm in Bellevelle, Wis., to Jacob and Mary Duerst. He was raised and worked on the farm. In World War II, he was in the 9th Armored Division, 19th Tank Battalion, fought in the Battle of the Bulge, and participated in the capture of the Remagen Bridge. After the war, he worked for an International Harvester dealership in New Glarus, Wis. He moved his family to Golden, Colo., in 1959, where he worked for Coors Brewery Co. and the Colorado School of Mines. In 1971, he moved to Sheridan and worked various jobs including for the Wyoming Highway Department until his retirement in 1987. Mr. Duerst enjoyed friends and family, people of all ages, animals, hunting, fishing, woodworking and guns. He was known as a talented craftsman and storyteller with a great sense of humor. He was preceded in death by a son, Larry; two brothers, and two sisters. Survivors include his wife, Lorraine; six children, Brenda Wooley, Colleen Blakeman, Rob Stuessy, Cynthia Winders, Brad Duerst, and Melaine Davidson; a sister, Elsie Funseth of Bellevelle; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Larry Edward Wilkins

Former Sheridan County resident Larry Edward Wilkins, 68, Hudson, died Sunday, Sept. 28, 2008, in Casper&rsquos Wyoming Medical Center due to heart complications, according to his family. Cremation has taken place. Services will be 1 p.m. Oct. 11 at Lander Valley Baptist Church in Lander. Born April 4, 1940, in Billings to Lee and Rose (Schedlock) Wilkins, he spent his childhood in the Sheridan area and on his grandfather&rsquos small ranch outside Ranchester, where he developed a love of horses. He graduated in 1958 from Sheridan High School. As a young man, he worked at Eatons&rsquo Dude Ranch as a wrangler and cowboy. He settled in the Lander-Hudson area, where he drove a truck and did air conditioning and sheet metal work. He worked at the Lander Ace Hardware store for several years until semiretirement. He enjoyed training and riding horses throughout his life, hunting and fishing, particularly in the Wind River Mountains. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jennie Wilkins, and a sister, Jonalee Herbst. Survivors include his wife, Jean (Barnes) Wilkins; three children, Lee of Helena, Mont., Mike of Silver Springs, Fla., and Tannis Walker of Sheridan; three stepchildren, Robert Vaile of Etna Green, Ind., Pam Destefano of Lander, and Kathy Huskey of Aurora, Colo.; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Clifford C. Wiberg Jr.

Clifford C. Wiberg Jr., 71, of Sheridan died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008, in Coeur d&rsquoAlene, Idaho, according to his family. Cremation has taken place. Graveside services with military honors will be 11 a.m. Friday in Sheridan Municipal cemetery with the Rev. Ron Stolcis officiating. A reception will follow at Holy Name Parish Hall. Born Feb. 2, 1937, in Sheridan to Clifford and Catherine Cunningham Wiberg, he graduated from Holy Name School and Sheridan High School. In 1955 he joined the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Japan. He was honorably discharged in 1958. He spent a number of the following years in veterans hospitals. He was preceded in death by a sister, Alicia Russell. Survivors include a son, James Steven Wiberg; and 12 siblings, Arland Wiberg, Sylvia Sadler, Carol DePoorter, Catherine Joan Anich, Regina Reese, Doretta Dunham, Monica Shockey, Bridget LaMotte, Christopher Wiberg, Nelia May Voogd, Richard Wiberg and Mary Geertz.

Grace Angeloff

Grace Angeloff, 78, of Buffalo, died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2008, in the Alzheimer &rsquos Unit at Sheridan Manor. Visitation is 1-9 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Adams Funeral Home chapel, Buffalo. Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Tom Saur officiating. Graveside services will be in Willow Grove cemetery in Buffalo. Born May 27, 1930, in Forsyth, Mont., to James and Ruth Strong, she grew up and attended school in Forsyth. She graduated from Forsyth High School in 1949 and worked for the bakery in Forsyth. She married Pete Angeloff in September 1954 in Billings. They moved to Buffalo in 1958, when Mr. Angeloff transferred to work at the Safeway store. Mrs. Angeloff worked as a teller for First National Bank, and the couple also owned and operated Gambles Hardware Store for several years. She retired in 1993 and continued to live in Buffalo until a short time before her death. She enjoyed playing cards, friends and family, picking up her grandchildren after school, cooking, plants and flowers. She was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister. Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Susan Angeloff of Custer, S.D., and Gail Morris of Buffalo; one son, Nicholas Angeloff of Sheridan; a brother, Chuck Strong of Forsyth; a sister, Donna Jones of Forsyth; and four grandchildren. Donations may benefit Bread of Life food pantry c/o Adams Funeral Home, 351 N. Adams Ave., Buffalo, WY 82834.

Evelyn Coop

Evelyn Coop, 95, of Clearmont died Sunday, Sept. 28, 2008, in her home. Graveside committal services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in Custer National Battlefield cemetery with Pastor Marty Rostad officiating. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Oct. 12 at Community Church in Clearmont with Pastor Rostad officiating. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Born Sept. 29, 1912, in Garnett, Kan., to Harrison Knight and Mabel Bennet, she moved in 1929 with her family to Sheridan, where her uncle and other family members resided. She married Joe Coop on Jan. 24, 1931. Mrs. Coop was a Girl Scout leader for many years. The couple attended First Christian Church. While her husband served in World War II, she joined the first Red Cross Aide Corps training group in Sheridan County and volunteered 700 hours at the local hospital. The couple moved to Basin, where Mr. Coop owned a sporting goods store. She took up rock and fossil painting and was known as an accomplished painter of Wyoming scenes, particularly the Grand Tetons, Big Horn Mountains and wildlife. Mrs. Coop worked at the Greybull-Basin hospital as a nurse&rsquos aide and later as activities director at the State Sanitarium in Basin. After the death of her husband in 1977, she moved to Clearmont. She enjoyed camping, fishing, sewing, crocheting, carpentry, purchasing and renovating houses, photography, writing poems, reading, working crosswords, and collecting various items, particularly hats. She took several art classes at Sheridan and Casper colleges, created jewelry out of metal zippers, sold an article to Ladies Home Journal, and won an award from the Wyoming Writer&rsquos contest for poetry. She was preceded in death by her husband and her seven brothers and sisters. Survivors include two children, Kenneth of Worland and Terrill Foster of Clearmont; eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great grandchildren. Joseph Cedric Raine

Joseph Joe Cedric Raine, 53, of Gillette, died Sunday, Sept. 28, 2008, at Campbell County Memorial Hospital of a sudden cardiac event, according to Walker Funeral Home in Gillette. He was father of Cedric Raine of Sheridan. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Services are 10 a.m. Thursday at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Gillette with Pastor Hans Sacrison officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Pisgah cemetery in Gillette.

Charles E. Catron

Charles Charlie E. Catron, 67, of Sheridan, died Sunday, Sept. 28, 2008, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital after a long battle with cancer. A memorial service is 5 p.m. Friday at Kane Funeral Home, followed at 6 p.m. by a celebration of life for friends and family at Sheridan Elks Club. Per his request, attire should be casual. Born July 3, 1941, to Sheldon and Margaret Catron, he was a lifelong resident of Sheridan, graduating from Sheridan High School in 1959. After high school, he attended the University of Wyoming before following his father into the painting business. He became a full partner in C&B Paint Co. in 1969. After retirement in 2006, he helped his friend Mike Flynn prepare the new Science Museum at Sheridan College. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Bob. Survivors include his wife, Jan; a brother, Tom (Moose); two sons, Joey and Weegie; a stepdaughter, Kris; three stepsons Kevin, Bill and Scott; three nieces; a nephew; and five grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials may benefit the Dog and Cat Shelter or the Science Museum at Sheridan College.

Cody Sisco

Cody Sisco, 23, of Sheridan, died Sunday, Sept. 28, 2008, in Cheyenne from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Viewing is 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at Kane Funeral Home with services to follow there at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Kevin Jones officiating. Born Aug. 10, 1985, to Rowland Rollie and Linda Sisco, he graduated from Tongue River High School in 2004. He received a Presidential Scholarship Award to the University of Wyoming, where he was a senior majoring in business administration. He worked for B&G Roustabout during the summer. He enjoyed riding his fathers motorcycle, playing Frisbee golf, concerts, fishing, bowling and spending time with family and friends. He was preceded in death by his father; maternal grandparents William and Norma Gerlock; and his stepfather, Kenneth Bridwell. Survivors include his mother, Linda Sisco-Bridwell of Sheridan; a sister, Brittney Sisco of Sheridan; grandparents Tom and Minnie Sisco of Casper; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Carla J. Engdahl

Carla J. Engdahl, 56, of Sheridan died Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2008, in Sheridan Manor after a long battle with cancer. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Kane Funeral Home with Pastor Tony Forman officiating. A reception will follow at Big Horn Mountain Eagles, 1760 Commercial Lane in Sheridan. Interment of cremains will be in the Lewistown, Mont., cemetery at 2 p.m. Saturday. Born Dec. 2, 1951, in Lewistown to Clifford and Juanita Barkhoff, she attended school in Judith Gap, Mont. For 22 years she was the partner of David D. Smith. She loved the outdoors, butterflies, and growing plants. She also enjoyed puzzles, cribbage, and spending time with her family and friends. She was preceded in death by a brother, Lonnie Barkhoff; a son, Garry Barkhoff; and a sister, Susan Chan. She is survived by her parents of Lewistown; a daughter, Rosemary LaFond of Sheridan; a son, Travis Sayer of Sheridan; five siblings, Diane Waltenbaugh of Billings, Gail VanOmnen of Missoula, Mont., Marlynn Cady of Red Lodge, Mont., Beverly Barkhoff of Hardin, Mont., and Ted Barkhoff of Lewistown; seven grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Carla Engdahl Memorial Fund, 1735 S. Sheridan Ave., Sheridan, WY 82801.

George W. Harrison

George W. Harrison, 90, of Sheridan, died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008, at Sheridan VA Medical Center. Cremation arrangements were with Kane Funeral Home. Memorial services are 1 p.m. Friday at Church of Christ, 1769 Big Horn Ave. Interment of cremains with military honors follows in Sheridan Elks cemetery. Born Oct. 9, 1917, in Belfry, Mont., to Oscar T. and Edna A. Harrison, he graduated from Belfry High School as salutatorian. He attended Billings Business College and Eastern Montana College in Billings and the University of Colorado in Boulder. He was an elementary school teacher for two years before going to work for Burroughs Corp. in 1940. He married Fauneil Powell in Imperial, Neb., on Feb. 14, 1941. As a newlywed, he was drafted into the U.S. Army. After World War II began, he attended officers training school and was commissioned a second lieutenant. In early 1943, he was sent to England, where he served in the Quartermaster Corps until the war ended. He was honorably discharged Feb. 19, 1945, with the rank of major. He returned to Burroughs Corp., where he worked 37 years, receiving the Burroughs Legion of Honor award for outstanding systems installation and customer service. After retiring from Burroughs, he was an associate broker with ABC Realty for six years. Mr. Harrison enjoyed all sports and watching his grandchildren participate in sports. He was a member of the Toastmasters Club and a life member of Elks Lodge 520. He was preceded in death by a brother, Ralph Harrison; and a sister, Mildred Johnson. Survivors include his wife; a son, Jim Harrison of Sheridan; two daughters Debi Smith of Sheridan and Yvonne Harrison of Centennial, Colo.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations may benefit Sheridan on Skates, c/o High School Hockey Team, P.O. Box 49, Sheridan, WY 82801.

Kimberly Suzanne Sutton

Kimberly Suzanne Sutton, 40, of Sheridan, died Monday, Nov. 24, 2008, at her residence. Visitation will be noon to 6 p.m. Monday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Memorial service is 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bethesda Worship Center with Pastor Scott Lee officiating. Born May 15, 1968, in Long Beach, Calif., she grew up and went to schools in California, moving to Sheridan in 2001. She worked at Sheridan Liquors, then at Arby’s as a shift manager. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, doing arts and crafts, baking, hiking, camping, billiards and “movie nights.” It was said her favorite past time was taking her dog, “Spirit, ” on long walks and to swim in the creek. She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Peggy Johnson; a nephew and a cousin. Survivors include her mother, Laurie Kaupang of Sheridan; a brother, Roy Kaupang of California; three sisters, Peggy Kaupang, Sandy Haynes and Renee Tracy, all of Sheridan; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, uncles and aunts. Memorials may benefit the Sheridan Dog and Cat Shelter, 84 East Ridge Road, Sheridan, WY 82801.

Joseph Evangeline

Joseph Evangeline, 73, of Sheridan, died Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2008, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. He was a patient at Sheridan Dialysis unit for more than 12 years. Rosary will be recited 7 p.m. Monday at Kane Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial is 10 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Name Catholic Church with the Rev. Ron Stolcis officiating. Interment will follow in the Sheridan Elks cemetery. Born in Sheridan Aug. 9, 1935, to James and Ludine Evangeline, he attended Coffeen Elementary School and was a graduate of Sheridan High School. He attended Sheridan College and graduated from the University of Wyoming with a bachelor’s degree in business. He worked as an auditor/examiner for the State of Wyoming and Montana, and the National Credit Union Association in Helena, Mont., until his retirement in 1989, when he returned to Sheridan. He married Virginia James in Sheridan Aug. 11, 1968. He ran businesses in Sheridan including JE Motel and JE Mobile Home Court. He was a member of the Sheridan Elks Lodge No. 520, the Masonic Lodge and the Shrine. He enjoyed bowling, fishing, spending time in the mountains, joining his "Coffee Club" friends at the Holiday, and was said to have a fondness for Boston Terriers. He was preceded in death by a brother, Pete Evangeline; three uncles and an aunt. Survivors include his wife, Virginia of Sheridan; stepson, Don K. James of Billings; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Memorials may benefit Sheridan Dialysis; Holy Name Catholic School, 260 E. Loucks St., Sheridan, WY 82801; Sheridan Dog and Cat Shelter, 84 East Ridge Rd., Sheridan; or the Sheridan Senior Center, 211 Smith St., Sheridan.

Joshua Frederick Riebe

Joshua Frederick Riebe, 22, of Arvada, Colo., died Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2008, according to family. Services were Nov. 22 at Spirit of Christ Catholic Church in Arvada. He was a senior at Dixie State University in St. George, Utah. Survivors include his parents, former Sheridan resident Cindy (Brown) Riebe and Michael Reibe; brothers Nicholas and Kyle; maternal aunt Bonnie Judge of Sheridan; and step-grandparents Evelyn and Bob Roush of Sheridan. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, the late Barbara and Ray Brown of Sheridan. Memorials may benefit the Joshua Riebe Memorial Fund, 1st Bank North, 8800 Wadsworth Blvd., Westminster, Colo., 80021.

Birdeen Legerski

Birdeen Legerski, 90, of Sheridan, died Monday, Nov. 24, 2008, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Rosary will be recited 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, at Kane Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial is 10 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 4, at Holy Name Catholic Church with the Rev. Ron Stolcis officiating. Interment will follow in the Sheridan Elks cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may benefit Holy Name Catholic School, 260 E. Loucks St., Sheridan, WY 82801; the Sheridan Senior Center Meals on Wheels program, 211 Smith St., Sheridan; or a benefit of the donor’s choice.

Alben Paul Zowada

Alben Paul Zowada, 79, of Sheridan, died Sunday, Nov. 23, 2008, in Westview Health Care Center. Viewing will be 9 a.m. until the 2 p.m. service Wednesday at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with Father Ronald Stolcis officiating. Interment will be in Sheridan Elks cemetery. Born Sept. 8, 1929, in Acme, to John and Elizabeth (Gauzer) Zowada, he served in the U.S. Navy from 1951-53. After the service, he returned to Sheridan where he worked as a cook for the Veterans Affairs Medical Center for 35 years. He married Margaret Arizona in July, 1967. They were married 40 years. He was preceded in death by his wife; four brothers; two sisters; a niece; and a nephew. Survivors include three nieces and two nephews. Memorials may benefit the Donor's Choice.

Kathleen Bidonde

Kathleen Bidonde, 90, of Buffalo, died Thursday, Nov. 20, 2008, at the Johnson County Healthcare Center in Buffalo. Visitation was 1-5 p.m. Monday with Rosary at 7 p.m. at the St. John the Baptist Church in Buffalo. Services are 10 a.m. today at the Catholic church. Born Aug. 18, 1918 in Leads, Iowa, to Charles and Grace Wilson, she grew up and attended school in Leads, graduating Valedictorian in 1936. She moved to California, becoming a comptometer operator. She moved to St. Paul, Minn., where she was employed as a comptometer operator for International harvester. While on a trip to visit relatives in Wyoming, she met and married Basque sheepherder Bob Bidonde. The couple lived in Buffalo and raised six children. She enjoyed reading, walking, flying planes, spending time with her family, particularly her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers, a sister and a granddaughter. Survivors include a son, Chuck of Buffalo; daughters Mary Louise Hepker, Mary K. Nuckolls and Velma Alger of Buffalo, Dee Harnett of McMinnville, Ore., and Jeanette Geis of Kaycee; a brother, John Wilson of Oceanside, Calif.; 16 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
