Clara Mae Joubert

Clara Mae Joubert, 81, of Buffalo died Monday, May 25, 2009, at her home. Visitation is 1-9 p.m. Friday and 8-9:30 a.m. Saturday at Adams Funeral Home Chapel followed by service there at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Bob McHenry and Pastor Joe Jarvis officiating. Burial will follow in Willow Grove cemetery with graveside services. Born April 3, 1928, in Buffalo to Jesse Fred and Mae Elizabeth Greub, she grew up 25 miles south of Buffalo on the Middle Fork of Crazy Woman at the Greub Ranch. She attended the Greub School for the first eight years and graduated from Johnson County High School in 1947. At age 19, she moved to Sheridan and went to work for the Chamber of Commerce during the day and attended Hyman Secretary College at night. She married Homer Bud Hardee on June 17, 1948, in Buffalo. The couple had two daughters, Florence Elaine and Barbara Jean. Mr. Hardee died in 1951, and she moved to Buffalo, where she took in ironing, did housecleaning, and worked on the family ranch. She married Edwin Joubert on June 8, 1952, and the couple had one daughter, Bonnie Rose. They moved to the TTT in Kaycee, then to Buffalo to work for the Cross H and Russell Wright ranches. In 1958 they purchased a home on Rock Creek. Mr. Joubert died in November 2005, and Mrs. Joubert continued living on Rock Creek She drove a school bus, was a 4-H leader for 10 years, and worked for First National Bank as a bookkeeper for 21 years. She retired in 1987. She was active in the Senior Center, American Legion Auxiliary, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and attended the Union Congregational and Wesleyan churches. She was a member of Buffalo 49’s Dance Club and enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In addition to her two husbands, she was preceded in death by one daughter and one brother. Survivors include two daughters, Florence Elaine Knutson of Arvada and Bonnie Rose Joubert of Thatcher, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Mary Maxine Brashears

Mary Maxine Brashears, 80, of Buffalo died Saturday, May 23, 2009, in Buffalo. Visitation is 1-9 p.m. today and 8:30-9:30 a.m. Thursday, followed by funeral services at 10 a.m. at Adams Funeral Home in Buffalo with Pastor Donnie Paulson officiating. Interment will be in Willow Grove cemetery in Buffalo. Born in Fall River, Kan., to Grace and Elmer Ellis, she grew up and completed her schooling in Fall River. She moved to Buffalo in 1972, where she worked for the Occidental as a waitress until it closed. She also worked as a waitress at the Crossroads Inn until retiring in 1987. She enjoyed gardening, collecting rocks, flowers, reading Western novels (especially by Louis L’Amour), spending time with her family, and keeping up with the activities of her granddaughters. She was preceded in death by her husband and one sister. Survivors include one daughter, Sally Loden of Rolling Hills; one brother, Jimmie Johnson of Buffalo; and two granddaughters. Memorials may benefit St. Francis Animal Shelter or Buffalo Senior Center, in care of Adams Funeral Home, 351 N. Adams Ave., Buffalo, WY 82834.

Don Elsom

Don Elsom, 85, of Buffalo died Thursday, May 21, 2009, at Johnson County Healthcare Center. Services were this morning at Adams Funeral Home Chapel, the Rev. John Constantine officiating. Donations may benefit Susie Bowling Lawrence Hospice in care of Adams Funeral Home, 351 N. Adams Ave., Buffalo, WY 82834. He was born Feb. 25, 1924, in Midwest to James and Bertha Elsom, and his father died when Don was 4. He moved with his family to Buffalo, where he grew up on the family ranch on Crazy Woman. He attended school in Buffalo and graduated from Johnson County High School in 1942. After high school he went to work on the family ranch. He married Dorothy Rinker on April 21, 1951, in Mayoworth. They resided on the ranch on Crazy Woman. In 1955 they moved to the Gordon Ranch in Mayoworth, where they worked for a time before moving to Buffalo. Mr. Elsom went to Lancaster, Pa., where he learned to lay tile and linoleum. He worked for Atter’s Furniture for four years and later as a custodian for Clear Creek Grade School for nine years. In 1992 he took a job in maintenance with Clear Creek Apartments, working there until 2007. A member of Buffalo 49’s Dance Club and an investment club, he enjoyed ranching, horses, hunting, fishing and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one grandson. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Vicki Edelman and Donna Arno of Buffalo; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Margaret Shell

Sheridan native Margaret Shell, 81, died Monday, May 25, 2009, at Songbird Lodge in Brownwood, Texas. Funeral services are 2 p.m. Thursday at Northridge Baptist Church in Early, Texas, with the Rev. Dennis Williams officiating. Interment will follow in Eastlawn Memorial Park in Early under the direction of Heartland Funeral Home of Early.
Born Feb. 8, 1928, in Sheridan to Knute and Sophie Salveson Thompson, she married James B. Shell on Aug. 25, 1948, in Sheridan. She was a homemaker and mother and a member of Gateway Baptist Church in Comanche, Texas. She was preceded in death by a son, Dr. James Bruce Shell. Survivors include her husband; two daughters Cheri Montgomery of Denton, Texas, and Judy Day of Early; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. JEANNETTE ANN BARTON
NOVEMBER 3, 1939 – MAY 21, 2009

Jeannette Ann Barton, 69, of Sheridan, WY, died Thursday, May 21, 2009 in Seattle, Washington. Mrs. Barton was born November 3, 1939 in Sheridan, Wyoming to Walter and Avis Maxine (Barber) Grubb. She grew up in the Sheridan and Arvada area and attended Arvada schools. Jeannette married Elmer J. Barton in Sheridan on September 2, 1956. She was a farm wife, teachers aide, and school secretary at Highland Park Elementary School for 23 years. Jeannette enjoyed traveling and going to casinos, crocheting, needlework, and her cats. She especially enjoyed her years as a young wife and mother on the family ranch near Arvada. Her greatest joy was spending time with her husband, children, and grandchildren. Mrs. Barton was preceded in death by her parents; a twin sister, Jeanne; and one brother, Walter _Bud_ Grubb. She is survived by her husband, Elmer, of Sheridan, WY; one son, Fred M. Barton, of Sheridan, WY; one daughter, Lynne M. Barton-Fulfs, and husband, Duane, of Arlington, Washington; one sister, Marilyn White, of Spring, Texas; 6 grandchildren, Austin Barton, Amy (Barton) Herring, and husband, Sam; Morgen Chase, Toby Walberg, Tucker Chase, and Drew Chase; 3 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was adored by her family. Visitation for Mrs. Barton will be from 4:00 P. M. to 6:00 P. M. Thursday, May 28, 2009 at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral service will be 2:00 P. M. Friday, May 29, 2009 at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Douglas Goodwin officiating. Interment will be in the Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Memorials in memory of Mrs. Barton may be made to the Sheridan Dog and Cat Shelter, 84 E. Ridge Road, Sheridan, WY 82801.

Donovan D. McKennan

Sheridan native Donovan D. McKennan, 78, died Tuesday, May 19, 2009, in Sheridan Manor. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in Sheridan VA Medical Center Chapel with Chaplain Harden Haeffner officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Born April 8, 1931, to Donovan McKennan and Hazel Martin, he attended Sheridan schools and served two tours of duty in Korea in the 2nd Infantry Division from 1948 to 1957. He returned to Sheridan. He married Billie Jo Ross in 1959. They divorced. He was employed at Sheridan VA Medical Center, Meade Creek Ranch and the WYO Theater. Mr. McKennan enjoyed fishing and camping in the Big Horn Mountains as well as painting portraits and landscapes, woodcarving, and carpentry. He was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Carter, and a son, Terry D. McKennan. Survivors include two daughters, Kelly Long of Sheridan and Tamara Perrin of Loveland, Colo.; a stepson, Billy Maddox, of Gardiner, Mont.; two sisters, Mary Harrison and Wilma Parker of Seattle; six grandchildren; one great- grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorials may benefit Sheridan Dog and Cat Shelter, 84 E. Ridge Road, Sheridan, WY 82801.

ANNE CECELIA BANAS KILGORE
MARCH 30, 1928 – MAY 17, 2009

Anne Banas Kilgore, 81, of Sheridan, WY, died Sunday, May 17, 2009 in Sheridan Manor with her daughter, Shari, by her side. Anne was born on March 30, 1928 to Dorothy and Michael Banas in Dietz, WY. Her mother died when she was an infant. Anne was blessed to be raised by Anna and Paul Wallach, and had a very special love for them. Anne was married to Walt Washut. She possessed a unique talent and interest in home planning and decorating, and was invited to act as a delegate to McCall’s “Women’s Congress on Better Living, ” in 1957. While in Sheridan, she worked at Memorial Hospital. Anne married Bill Kilgore in 1967 and lived in South Dakota and Colorado. While in Denver, she was employed with Presbyterian Hospital and the National Park Service, enjoying many friendships. Anne, or as her childhood friends called her, “Anna Banana”, loved gardening, flowers, and her pet companion cats. She was creative and imaginative, and a talented artist. Anne’s artwork was extraordinary and she maintained a daily journal, over the past nineteen years. Her cherished journals are a living memorial for her family. Anne was preceded in death by Walt Washut, her parents, Anna and Paul Wallach and Dorothy and Mike Banas, her infant sister, Dorothy, brothers George and Mike Banas. She is survived by her daughters, Toots Washut Taszut (Bill Blackburn), of Bozeman, Shari Washut Thompson (Dwight), of Sheridan, sister Anne Aksamit, of Sheridan, and grandsons, Jeremy Schenfeld, of Denver, Korey Washut, of Denver, and Kyler Washut, of Sheridan. She is also survived by great grandchildren, Kyanne, Alexis, Shaylen, Jacey, Chase, Keely, and Lukas, and Anne’s close and dear friends. At her request, no services are planned. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Anita Smith

Anita Smith, 88, of Buffalo died Tuesday, May 19, 2009, at Wyoming Medical Center in Casper. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday at Adams Funeral Home Chapel. A vigil service and rosary are 7 p.m. Monday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Buffalo. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church with the Rev. Pete Johnson as celebrant. Born Feb. 22, 1921, in Buffalo to John and Jeanne Marie Camino, she grew up and received her education in Buffalo graduating from Johnson County High School in 1938. She graduated from Clark Catholic College in Dubuque, Iowa, with a bachelor’s degree in business. She married Dean H. Smith on Nov. 7, 1946, in Buffalo. They resided in Buffalo, where Mr. Smith was a rancher, wool and livestock order buyer, and real estate agent. He died in 1986. Mrs. Smith continued to live in Buffalo and was office manager for the Smith Brokerage. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, where she was choir director and organist for many years. She was the State Woolgrowers Auxiliary secretary; past president of Buffalo Music Club; and served on the Department of Family Services board of directors and the Mental Health Center board of directors. She was also a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and secretary of the Buffalo Basque Club. Survivors include one son, Greg Smith of Buffalo; three daughters, Cristy Kinghorn of Buffalo, Denita Brock of Springtown, Texas, and Cindy Thompson of Pueblo, Colo.; one brother, Pete Camino of Buffalo; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Memorials may benefit St. John the Baptist Catholic Church Foundation, c/o Adams Funeral Home, 351 N. Adams Ave., Buffalo, WY 82834.

Daniel Thomas Carlat

Daniel Thomas Carlat, 57, died Sunday, May 17, 2009, at his ranch home south of Buffalo.Visitation is 1-9 p.m. Thursday at Adams Funeral Home chapel. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Friday at Big Horn Baptist Church in Buffalo with Pastor Pete Friese officiating. Burial will be in Willow Grove cemetery with graveside services to follow the funeral. Born May 11, 1952, in Sheridan to Robert and Charlene Carlat, he attended school in Broadus, Mont. At age 14, he moved with his family to his grandparents’ ranch in Decker, Mont., and graduated from Sheridan High School in 1970. He attended Sheridan College for two years and later went to work with his dad on the family ranch near Decker. He married Linda Aksamit on Dec. 1, 1973, in Ranchester. In 1974 they moved to a ranch on Pass Creek near Wyola, Mont., where they lived for 18 years. In 1991 the couple purchased the Lower Willow Glen Ranch south of Buffalo, where they lived and worked. Mr. Carlat was active in the Johnson County Farm Bureau and on the bureau’s board of directors. He was an officer with the Johnson County Co-op and a longtime member of the Homesteader Band, which played in Johnson and Sheridan counties. He enjoyed ranch work, collecting and restoring vintage automobiles, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Survivors include his wife; his parents of Sheridan; two sons, Loren Carlat of Buffalo and Charley Carlat of Valencia, Calif.; one daughter, Janey Back of Douglas; three sisters, Shirley Muller and Janice Feaster of Sheridan and Susan Yalowizer of Ranchester; and seven grandchildren. LARRY J. WILSON
APRIL 7, 1924 – MAY 13, 2009

Larry J. Wilson passed away on May 13, 2009, at the family home in Tacoma, Washington. Larry was born in Lawrence, Kansas, on April 7, 1924, to Henry A. and Bessie Brown Wilson. Larry J. Wilson and Lyell Mae Anderson were married in Hardin, Montana, on January 11, 1947. He was preceded in death by his parents, two infant children, five sisters; Fern Cunningham, LouAda Todd, Marie Novakavich, Betty Jean Wilson and Naomi Bowes and two brothers; Henry (Hack) Wilson and Frank (Doc) Wilson. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Lyell M. Wilson, his daughter Loretta Wilson, of the family home, his son Larry and daughter-in-law Willajean Wilson II, of Scottsdale, Arizona, and step- granddaughter Jennifer Weaver of Denver, CO. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews in the Sheridan area. Larry and Lyell lived in Sheridan from 1946 until moving to Washington in 2007. Larry was in business in Sheridan for 16 years before going to work for Big Horn Coal and then on to Decker Coal where he retired in 1991. He was a life member of the Elks Club, the VFW and a member of the American Legion. He enlisted in the US Navy in November of 1941 and served in the South Pacific. He loved golf, baseball and bowling. He was a little league baseball coach for several years. He also played in the Sheridan Softball league in the early 50’s. His humor and love will be greatly missed by all. Cremation has taken place and the remains will be buried in the Sheridan Elks cemetery on a date to be determined. The family requests that any memorial donations be made to the Sheridan Elks club #520, P. O. Box 624, Sheridan, WY 82801.

John Dregoiw

Lifelong Sheridan resident John Dregoiw, 90, died Wednesday, May 13, 2009, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Funeral services were 1:30 p.m. Monday at Champion-Ferries Funeral Home. Private burial followed with a reception at the Elks Club. Born Aug. 12, 1918, of Romanian parents in Sheridan, he owned and operated the Coca-Cola Bottling Co. until he sold it in 1968. He went to work for First Interstate Bank (then the Bank of Commerce) as vice president of the Real Estate Department until retirement. He came out of retirement and worked for Rocky Mountain Federal for four years as a mortgage loan originator. In 1980, he obtained a real estate broker's license and worked at Carroll Realty. He was active with the Elks, where he was awarded special recognition for running the bingo operations. He was a member of the Shrine, an avid golfer, and belonged to the country club for many years. He won four Wyoming state golf championships and six other golf tournaments. He served on the school board for four consecutive terms. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margie; two brothers; and one sister. Survivors include two daughters, Linda Dregoiw Johnson of Torrington and Judy Dregoiw of Sheridan; a son, Mickey Dregoiw of Sheridan; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Memorials may benefit Sheridan Elks Lodge 520, 45 W. Brundage St., Sheridan, WY 82801.

WILLIAM HALVOR “BILL” JOHNSON
AUGUST 7, 1934 – MAY 15, 2009

William Halvor “Bill” Johnson, 74, passed away in Sheridan Memorial Hospital on Friday, May 15, 2009, after a courageous battle with cancer. Bill was born in Gillette, WY on August 7, 1934, to William & Mildred (Reed) Johnson. Bill grew up in Gillette and after graduating from high school he moved to Sheridan. He married JoAnn Chapek. They later divorced. Bill enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Turkey and Fort Sill, OK from 1956 until 1961. Bill married Margo Baker on December 14, 1968. He worked for the Sheridan Police Dept. from 1961 until 1971. He went to the Sheriff’s Office in 1971 as under-sheriff for Pete Frith from 1971 until 1975. He then became Sheriff until 1991. Bill was a graduate of the FBI National Academy, Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy, National Sheriff’s Academy and many other law enforcement schools. After retiring from law enforcement, he worked for the VOA in Supervision Services until he retired. Bill was a life member of Elks Lodge #520. Bill is preceded in death by his parents and son Billie. Bill is survived by his wife Margo of Sheridan; daughter Sharon (Peter) Callan of Georgia; sons Steven (Sharon) Johnson of Sheridan, Charles (Alex) Johnson of Germany and Rick (Nan) Wallach of Sheridan; brother Larry (Elizabeth) Johnson of Sheridan; thirteen grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; an aunt and several cousins. Viewing will be from 4:00pm until 7:00pm on Tuesday May 19 th, from Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral service will be 10:30am on Wednesday from Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Douglas Goodwin officiating. Interment will be in Sheridan Municipal cemetery, Elks Section. Military rites are by the Wyo. National Guard and the American Legion. Memorials may benefit the Welch Cancer Center, 1585 W. 5 th St., Sheridan or the Dog and Cat Shelter, 84 E. Ridge Road, Sheridan.

John ‘Gil’ Harris

John Gilbert “Gil” Harris, 95, of Sheridan died Friday, May 15, 2009, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Viewing is 8-9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Kane Funeral Home; service follows at 10 a.m. at Kane with Pastor Hale Harris officiating. Burial is in Sheridan Elks cemetery. Born June 21, 1913, in Custer, S.D., to John and Blanche Harris, he graduated from Campbell County High School in 1931 and married Afton Mulholland in 1933. They resided on the family ranch in Recluse but soon moved to Arizona, where Mr. Harris owned and operated a dairy in Flagstaff and Camp Verde. They returned north in 1957 and began work on the Antler Ranch in Wyola, Mont. Mr. Harris became foreman for the Little Horn Ranch until leaving to begin his own small farming and ranching operation in Wyola. Well known as a chuck wagon cook and talented horseman, he was also a brand inspector for many years. Following Mrs. Harris’ death in 1976, he married Nell McKinley; she died in 2005. An active member of Wyola Baptist Church, he took special delight in his family and loved the land and caring for his animals. In addition to his wives, he was preceded in death by two sons, Jack and David. Survivors include a daughter, Anne Haynes of Homer, Alaska; and six grandchildren.
