Betty Panian, 95, of Buffalo, died Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009, at the Amie Holt Care Center in Buffalo. Visitation is 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at Adams Funeral Home Chapel. Vigil service and Rosary are 6 p.m. Sunday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Buffalo. Mass of Christian Burial is 10 a.m. Monday at the Catholic church with Father Pete Johnson as Celebrant. Burial will follow in Willow Grove cemetery with graveside services. A reception will follow at the at the church. Mary Grinnell

Mary Grinnell, 89, of Sheridan died Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009, in Sheridan Manor. Funeral service is 10 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Doug Melius officiating. Burial will be in Sheridan Municipal cemetery, Masonic 8 section. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Born June 21, 1920, in Sheridan to Glen and Sadie (Aber) Tunks, she graduated from high school in Sheridan and from the University of Nebraska. She married Harold Grinnell on Sept. 12, 1944. Mrs. Grinnell worked as secretary for St. Peter's Episcopal Church and First Presbyterian Church. She was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority, Philanthropic Educational Organization, Daughters of the Nile, Book Review Club, and First Presbyterian Church. An avid bridge player, she also enjoyed sewing and playing the piano. Survivors include her husband; a son, Stuart of Cheyenne; two daughters, Susan Hicks of Wheatland and Sara Fuller of Sheridan; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Memorials may benefit First Presbyterian Church.

Viola M. Whaley

Viola M. Whaley, 95, Buffalo, died Monday, Nov. 2, 2009, at Amie Holt Care Center in Buffalo. Mass of Christian burial will be 7:30 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Greybull. DANY JOE WILLIAMSON
OCTOBER 31, 1969 -NOVEMBER 4, 2009

Dany Joe Williamson, 40, of Duluth, MN passed away on Wednesday, November 4, 2009 at Solvay Hospice House after a long battle with brain cancer. Dany was born on October 31, 1969 in Sturgis, SD to Myrl and Cleo (Daniels) Williamson. He was united in marriage to Tracy Bruckelmyer on July 29, 1989 in Spearfish, SD. He was a lifelong member of the Old Apostolic Lutheran Church. Dany is preceded in death by his brother, Del Ray; 2 nephews, Jace and Ty Williamson; and his maternal and paternal grandparents. Dany is survived by his wife, Tracy; sons, Brennan, Brady and Quinn Williamson all at home; parents, Myrl and Cleo of Sundance, WY; brothers and sisters, DeAnn (Harry) Redinger of Buffalo, WY, Debbie (Mike) Crowley of St. Onge, SD, Marion (Wanda), Darwin (Janie), Alan (Lori), Thomas (Corrine) and Jon of Sheridan, WY, Sally (Dale) Nelson of Hayti, SD, Joel (Dee) and Cody (Tiffany) of Moorcroft, WY, Cory (Trudy) of Whitewood, SD and Bonnie Williamson of Gillette, WY; as well as many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and a host of special Christian friends. IONE ALICE MAYFIELD
MARCH 6, 1934-NOVEMBER 3, 2009

Ione Alice Mayfield, 75, of Sheridan, WY, died Tuesday, November 3, 2009 in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Mayfield was born March 6, 1934 in Sheridan, WY to Gerald Wilbur and Hannah Clarabelle (Miller) Lyons. She grew up and attended schools in Sheridan. Ione married Brice Mayfield October 12, 1951 in Bentonville, Arkansas. She was a teacher's aide in S. A. T. for Special Education for 10 years, then worked as a teacher's aide and secretary at Tongue River Elementary. Mrs. Mayfield was a housewife and mother, and also worked as a volunteer for Special Olympics for 30 years. Ione was a member of the V. F. W. Post #1560 in Sheridan. She loved working in her flower garden, doing handcrafts, dancing, working with people with disabilities, camping and fishing in the Big Horn Mountains. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Mrs. Mayfield was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Brice; and one brother, Roy E. Lyons. She is survived two sons, Brice W. Mayfield, of Sheridan, WY, and Oscar Mayfield, and wife Nancy, of Pipe Creek, TX; one daughter, Tina Pierce, and husband Chris, of Parker, CO; one brother, Gerald L. Lyons, of Ranchester, WY; one sister, Helen Jordan, of Sheridan, WY; four grandchildren, Rebecca and Thomas Doyle Belloni, and Brice A. and Maximilian Mayfield; and two great grandchildren, Gracie and Tyler Belloni two sisters-in-law, Madonna Rowe, and Mrs. Roy Lyons; and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial service for Mrs. Mayfield will be 10am Saturday, November 7, 2009 at the First Christian Church with the Rev. Doug Goodwin officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. MARY CORINNE JOHNSON
APRIL 16, 1916 - NOV . 2, 2009

Mary Corinne Johnson, 93, of Casper, passed away Nov. 2, 2009 at the Central Wyoming Hospice Home. She was born April 16, 1916 in Sheridan, WY, the daughter of Thomas David and Lulu Mary (Cotton) Stroup. She attendedschool in the Four Mile (Decker), MT and Sheridan, WY areas, graduating from Sheridan High School in 1937. She was united in marriage to Carl Donald Johnson June 19, 1937 in the Baptist Church by Pastor Oliver Reed in Sheridan, WY. Her husband Don was employed by the Burlington-Northern Railroad, so Mary oversaw the daily household activities, raising five children. She was a country girl at heart and found joy in the simple things in life. She loved finding pictures and shapes in the clouds, enjoying agood cup of hot chocolate, crocheting, and walking hand in hand with her husband as they window shopped in downtown Sheridan. She was a cultivator of flowers and an avid gardener, raising her own vegetables even when she moved to town. She enjoyed a good card or board game and loved putting together jigsaw puzzles. Both she and Don enjoyed traveling to see family and friends, and she kept this up even after his death in 1973. Family and God were the center of her life. She gave of herself to help others in need. She nursed her husband, her mother, and her Aunt Nell through their illnesses and supported many other family members as they faced difficult medical challenges. She was a woman of great faith who devoted time to studying the Bible every day. She and her husband, Don, belonged to First Baptist Church in Sheridan. Mary spent many years teaching Sunday school and helping with Bible school. Her adventurous spirit, infectious sense of humor and love for life will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She is survived by two sons, Bill and wife Pam Johnson of Cheyenne, WY and Ralph Johnson of Statesville, NC and thirteen grandchildren (Edith Lou, Don, Sandy, Bob, Shanna, John, Carl, Donald, Inga, Carla, Cynthia, Gabe and Tessa). She is also survived by her brother, Bert and wife Lu Stroup, and sister Rose and husband Francis Stone, all of Sheridan, WY. Numerous great grandchildren and a few great -great grandchildren also survive her as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three children (Donald Dick Johnson, Bob Leroy Johnson and Donna Corinne McCoy), a granddaughter (Stephanie Mary Johnson), five brothers (Alonzo, Frank, Harry, Chester and Ray) and two sisters (Margaret Gleason and Helen Johnson). Graveside services will be held at the Sheridan Municipal cemetery in Sheridan, WY at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 7, 2009. Memorial contributions may be made to the donor's choice. James William Jones

James William Jones, 48, of Sheridan died Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Memorial services are 11 a.m. Nov. 14 at the Community Center in Johnstown, Colo. Born in Boulder, Colo., to George and Elizabeth Jones, he spent the past year helping individuals with special needs at Jodi’s Heart in Sheridan. Survivors include his wife, Cheryl Jones; his father of Corpus Christi, Texas; his mother of Johnstown; three brothers, Rick Jones of Rathdrum, Idaho, and Marty Jones and Richard Jones of Johnstown; two sisters, Katie Schwab of Salt Lake City and Claire McTiernan of Aurora, Colo.; and several aunts, uncles, nephews and nieces. CAROLE A. TUCKER
OCTOBER 31, 1936 - NOVEMBER 1, 2009

Carole Ann Tucker, life long resident of Sheridan, WY, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009, at her home. She was born on October 31, 1936 to Fern (Wilson) and Thomas N. Fraser at the Sheridan County Memorial Hospital. During her early childhood, she lived with her family on a ranch near Decker, MT, then moved with her mother and younger brother, Larry Thomas Fraser, to attend school in Sheridan. During high school, she worked at the Orpheum Theatre, was a member of the Jobs Daughters, and danced in many high school musicals graduating in the Class of 1955. She married Eugene Songer in June of 1955. They divorced and she later married Vern Tucker on May 7, 1964. Carole worked in Sheridan’s downtown business community until her retirement. Following school she was employed at First Federal Savings Bank, Tucker’s Office Equipment and in 1980 became owner of the Golden Crown Hallmark store and later expanded as a partner in LouAnn’s Hallmark. She retired in 1999 selling the store and beginning a joyful retirement that included many family gatherings, travel to Hawaii, Australia, Alaska and many trips to visit family and friends. She continued to contribute to the Sheridan Community by serving on the Election Board and volunteered at Sheridan County Memorial Hospital, the YMCA, and Senior Center. Carole will be remembered as a person with an expansive notion of family; friends were treated as family and family were friends. She was incredibly inclusive and quick to embrace each new individual important to anyone already in her ever-expanding family. She loved to organize reunions and events to bring together friends, immediate family, cousins, and Classmates of 1955. Carole will be remembered as energetic, engaging, empathetic, a patient listener, and supremely organized. She had an abundance of courage, independence, tolerance, charm, wit, and sense of fun. She was passionate about the natural beauty of the Sheridan area and loved to create beauty in her yard and home. Preceding her in death are her parents, stepfather - Dudley L. Cunningham, brother - Larry T. Frazer and Vern Tucker. She is survived by her son, Michael Eugene Songer (Karen) of Billings, MT; three daughters–Natalie Cornelius (Rich) of Gillette, WY, Tanna Trout (Rick) of Casper, WY, Connie Schroeder (Dean) of Valparaiso, IN; and grandchildren–Lindsey Trout, Carrie Rhea, Curtis Merriam, Lexie Schroeder, Ian Songer, Liz Schroeder and Tori Schroeder. The family request that memorial donations be made in Carole A. Tucker’s name to the City of Sheridan, Public Arts, P.O. Box 848, Sheridan, WY 82801 to fund “The Dance” sculpture by James N. Muir or The Susan G. Komen for the Cure Fund, Donor Services, P.O. Box 650309, Dallas, TX 75265-0309. Eddy L. Voiles

Eddy L. Voiles, 68, of Sheridan died Monday, Nov. 2, 2009, at his home. A memorial dinner is 1 p.m. Thursday at Veterans of Foreign Wars, 758 Broadway St. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Born July 10, 1941, in Sheridan to Sam and Elsie Voiles, he worked in construction. He enjoyed racing snowmobiles and tinkering on lawn mowers. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie, and a sister, Janice Voiles. Survivors include a daughter, Dianna Voiles of Sheridan; a son, Tim Voiles of Indianapolis; two brothers, Jack Voiles of Wamsutter and Claude Voiles of Recluse; a sister, Barbara Roth of Sheridan; two granddaughters; and two great-granddaughters.

Dixie L. Holmes

Dixie L. Holmes, 74, of Sheridan died Saturday, Dec. 26, 2009, at her residence. A viewing is 6-7 p.m. Jan. 7 at Kane Funeral Home. A celebration of life is 2 p.m. Jan. 8 at the funeral home with a reception following at the Elks Lodge. Burial is in Sheridan Elks cemetery. Born March 22, 1935, in Havre, Mont., to Richard H. "Dick" and Isabelle R. (Achenbach) Ellis, she graduated from Sheridan High School in 1953 and married George B. "Sonny" Holmes on Oct. 10, 1953, at the Methodist Church here. Before moving to Sheridan in 1977, she lived at the family ranch, Rancholme Cattle Co., in Decker, Mont. From 2000 to June 2003, she lived in Arizona. Mrs. Holmes enjoyed being a full-time wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She also enjoyed dancing, playing cards, video poker machines, rodeos, fishing, travel, meeting and learning about people and their families, and telling good jokes. She especially enjoyed going to Las Vegas with her husband. She was a member of the Benevolent Patriotic Order of Does. She was preceded in death by a son, Mark Dennis Holmes, in 1973 and her husband in 2002. Survivors include a daughter, Michele Denise “Shelly” Holmes of Cave Creek, Ariz.; a brother, Rick Ellis of Cave Creek; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. WALTER SCHLENKER
FEBRUARY 8, 1924 – DECEMBER 29, 2009

The funeral for Walter Schlenker, 85, Wishek, ND will be Saturday, January 2, 2010 at 10:30 AM at St. Luke Lutheran Church, Wishek, ND. Visitation will be Friday, January 1, 2010 from with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Wishek, ND. Walter died Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at the Wishek Community Hospital, Wishek, ND. Dahlstrom Funeral Home of Wishek, ND entrusted with arrangements. Walter Schlenker son of Dan and Ella (Kusler) Schlenker was born February 8, 1924 at Wishek, ND. Walter grew to manhood in Wishek and attended Wishek Public Schools. He started working at Schlenker Garage at the age of 13. Walter married Bernice Kopplin June 23, 1946 at the Lehr Baptist Church, Lehr, ND. Walter became a master mechanic and was shop foreman for 25 years. Walter joined the Wishek Volunteer Fire Department in 1942 and served 21 years. He also served on the Wishek city council Board for 8 years and served as Director of the Association of Commerce for 5 years. One of Walter’s pet projects was the annual Sauerkraut Day celebration. Walter was known as Mr. Fix-Itin south central North Dakota. In 1963 Walter accepted employment as the plant engineer at the Wishek Community Hospital. Walter was a Charter EMT member of the Wishek Ambulance service and served on the ambulance squad. Walter was a long time member of St. Luke Lutheran church at Wishek, ND. Walter died Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at the Wishek Community Hospital, Wishek, ND. He was 85 years old. Walter is survived by his wife Bernice, Wishek, ND; daughter, Vernell (Jerry) Lehr, Fargo, ND; two sons, Steve (Beth) Schlenker, Sheridan, WY; Robert (Kimberly) Schlenker, Bozeman, MT; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Milbert Schlenker, Lake Wood, WA; Daniel (Dorothy) Schlenker, St. Peter, MN; two sisters, Meta (Shorty) Heiser, Mesa, AZ and Donna (Paul) Gall, Ashley, ND. Walter was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Arnold.

Mabel A. Parker

Mabel A. Parker, 94, died Thursday, Dec. 24, 2009, in her Sheridan home. Private family service will be later. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Born Oct. 17, 1915, in Healey, Kan., to Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Thon, she grew up and attended schools in Kansas. She married William Parker on June 3, 1936. They moved to Sheridan in the late 1930s. Mrs. Parker cared for elderly people for several years. She enjoyed gardening, shopping and watching TV. She attended church at the Family Life Center and the Salvation Army. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1994; a daughter, Gladys Ann; and a brother. Survivors include a daughter, Dorothy Darco, and a son, Charles Parker, both of Sheridan; four grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Jessie F. Mitchell

Longtime Sheridan resident Jessie F. Mitchell, 85, died Sunday, Dec. 27, 2009, in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. A celebration of his life is planned later. Born Nov. 17, 1924, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kenny Mitchell, two grandchildren, and several siblings. Survivors include four children, Sandra Marmar of Woodstock, Vt., and Thomas and Larry Mitchell and Victoria Sarokon, all of Sheridan; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Memorials may benefit Sheridan Wesleyan Church or Sheridan Senior Center.

Nancy ‘Ruth’ Ainsworth

Former Sheridan resident Nancy “Ruth” Ainsworth, 80, died Friday, Dec. 25, 2009, in Greeley, Colo. Memorial service is 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Cornerstone United Methodist Church in Watertown, S.D. Born July 27, 1929, to Harold and Bertha Houck in Wilmington, Del., she attended school in Wilmington, graduated from Sullins College in Bristol, Va., and worked for a short time at DuPont Corp., where she met Frank Ainsworth. They were married Dec. 26, 1949, and moved to Logan, Utah, where Mr. Ainsworth finished college at Utah State. They then moved around the Midwest before settling in Sheridan, where they raised five children. They divorced in 1972. Mrs. Ainsworth worked many years sewing drapes at her Sheridan home. She retired in 2001. In 2003, she was diagnosed with cancer and moved to Watertown to live with family. A Christian, she enjoyed her children and grandchildren, cooking, sewing and crafting gifts, her flower garden, playing Skip-bo, reading, and especially celebrating the holidays. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Allen. Survivors include three daughters, Janet Crego of Greeley, Christy Kinney of Watertown, and Laurie Warich of Milford, Mass.; a son, Jeffrey Ainsworth of Brighton, Colo.; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Arrangements are with Moser Funeral and Cremation Service in Greeley.

JAMES L. (JIM) BENEPE JR. MD,
NOVEMBER 3, 1927 – DECEMBER 23, 2009

James L. (Jim) Benepe Jr., MD, 82, of Sheridan died Wednesday, December 23, 2009, at his residence. Jim was born November 3, 1927, in St. Paul, MN to James and Gladys (Bond) Benepe Sr. He graduated high school in 1945, served in the Navy V-5 Program from 1945-1948 in Dickinson, ND, graduated from Macalester College, St. Paul MN in 1952, and Washington University Medical School, St. Louis MO in 1956. During his medical residency at the V.A. Medical Hospital in St. Paul, he met and later married Sheila Hanson, in 1957, they divorced in 1976. He established his lifelong career in the V.A. Hospital system with a brief stay in Palo Alto, CA before settling in Sheridan in 1959 and remaining in Sheridan except for six years in Northampton, MA from 1967-1973. His titles while in Sheridan were Psychologist, Chief of Staff, Director and Chief of Psychiatry until his retirement in 1987. He was also active in and retired a Full Colonel in the Army Reserve. He married Mary (Johnson) Amundson in 1989. His passions in life were golf–winning various Club Championships, bird hunting, big game hunting, and all kinds of fishing. He also enjoyed telling jokes, cooking a good meal, a glass of wine, classical music, and the occasional poker game. He was preceded in death by a brother Dick in 2000. Survivors include his wife Mary, sons Jim (Barbara) Benepe III - Sheridan and Mark Benepe-Portland OR, a brother Tom, sisters Barbara and Portia and granddaughter Amanda. Funeral services are at 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, December 30, 2009, at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church with Father Kevin Jones officiating. A reception will immediately follow at the Sheridan Country Club. Cremation has taken place. Memorials may benefit the Sheridan Senior Citizens Center, 211 Smith St., Sheridan, WY 82801. Kane Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.

TRISTAN SCHOMER
November 1, 1996 - December 22, 2009

A celebration of life for Tristan Schomer will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, December 28, 2009 at Family Life Church with Pastor Martin Crump officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Pisgah cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m., Sunday, December 27, 2009 at Gillette Memorial Chapel. Tristan Schomer, age 13, of Gillette, Wyoming passed away on Tuesday December 22, 2009, at home surrounded by family and friends. Tristan was born November 1, 1996, the son of Greg and Becca (Bartow) Schomer in Sheridan, Wyoming. As a baby Tristan was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. He struggled with many medical conditions throughout his life. He was cared for at home by his family, aunt Bridget and grandma Sharon. Tristan found joy in loud noises and visits from family and friends. He was a fighter until the end of his long battle. Tristan will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Tristan is survived by his mother and father, Becca Schomer and Blair Schwartz; biological father, Greg Schomer; sister, Mikayla Schomer; all of Gillette, Wyoming; brother, Chris Schwartz of Hutchinson, Minnesota; grandparents, Linda Smith of Lead, South Dakota; Julie Schomer of Gillette, Wyoming; Butch (Deb) Schomer of Elko, Nevada; Jerry (Sharon) Schwartz of Gillette, Wyoming; and Tim Bartow of Joplin, Missouri; great grandparents, Harry (Ruth) Wolff and Shirley Schomer all of Gillette, Wyoming; Martin (Wanda) Heining of Minneapolis, Minnesota; several aunts, uncles, cousins as well as many doctors, nurses, and therapists. He was preceeded in death by his paternal great grandparents, Albert Leroy and Marilyn Bartow. Ginger Lacek, 77, of Sheridan died Monday, Dec. 21, 2009, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. A viewing will be 6-7 p.m. Sunday followed by a Christian wake service at 7 p.m. at Kane Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Stolcis officiating. Funeral Mass is 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Name Catholic Church. Burial is in Sheridan Municipal cemetery in the Elks section with a reception to follow for family and friends in the Catholic Church Parish Hall. Born April 4, 1932, in Sheridan, to Lee and Belva Smith, she married Paul Lacek Jr. on Feb. 16, 1952. She enjoyed playing bingo, travel, crafts and taking care of children (and her grandchildren) at Marion Daycare Center, where she worked for 30 years. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Ginger Depue, and three grandchildren. Survivors include her husband and eight children, Michael Wayne Lacek, Belle Maddux, Sherrie Shanor, Pattie Burgess, Paul “Shane” Lacek, John Lacek, Cindy Malyurek and Laurie Renish. Memorials may benefit Holy Name Catholic School, 337 E. Burkitt St., Sheridan, WY 82801.
