ROBERT L. (BOB) BRADLEY
JULY 7, 1923 - MARCH 27, 2010

SHERIDAN - Robert L. (Bob) Bradley, remembered by his children as someone who had clear and definite beliefs about right and wrong and treated all people fairly, died Saturday afternoon at the Veterans Hospital here after a lengthy illness. At his passing, he was surrounded by his wife of almost 63 years and members of his family. Bradley, 86, served his family, his country and his community in a rich life. He had ideals and had a sense of morality that guided him in his endeavors throughout his life. Born July 7, 1923 to Harrison Bradley and Mildred Lowry Bradley, he grew up in Cavalier, N.D. and graduated from Grand Forks High School. He enlisted into the U.S. Army at Fort Snelling, Minn., and saw action in the Pacific Theatre during WWII. He participated in three battles on le Shima island, on Okinawa, and was also involved in the liberation of the Philippines. The war ended as he was being readied for the invasion of Japan. After the war, he was sent to S. Korea. He was discharged from active service at Fort Lewis, Wash., in 1946. His U.S. Army decorations included the Philippine Liberation Medal with bronze service star, the Asiatic Pacific Service Medical, the American Theatre Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the Victory Medal. He also was awarded the sharpshooter medal. For a time after the war, Bob worked highway construction in Wyoming, Montana and North Dakota. It was at a dance in Sheridan in 1946 where he met Tana Flory, a native of Sheridan, after being introduced to him by a friend. “After that, it was all Bob, ” Mrs. Bradley said, adding that “he was a good dancer.” They were married at Miles City, Mont., on April 7, 1947. He continued to work highway construction. She recalled that they traveled in a mobile home and it was so cold “that blankets froze to the wall of the trailer” during those North Dakota winters. They settled in Sheridan in 1950. Ultimately, their love and marriage produced six children, 10 grandchildren and seven great- grandchildren, all who mourn his passing. While growing up, Bob enjoyed playing basketball and baseball. The story goes that he was “made” catcher of his teams because of his large hands. His brother, Mark Bradley, preceded him in death in 1944. Bob joined the Sheridan Police Department in 1951 and worked his way through the ranks for 22 years until he became police chief in the early 1970s. He was a lifelong member of the Wyoming Peace Officers Association. While a police officer serving the city of Sheridan and its residents, Bob pulled his weapon a few times during police incidences, but never fired it, preferring instead nonviolent negotiation. He retired as police chief. Bob was also a 51-year member of the American Legion and a 40 - year member Veterans of Foreign Wars. He served with the U.S. National Guard for more than 20 years, retiring as a staff sergeant. For the last few years of his duty with the Guard, he was the local recruiter in the Sheridan area for the Guard. He was also decorated by the Wyoming National Guard for his years of service and for his tenure as a recruiter. After leaving the Guard, he began one more career, what he termed “the best job of his life, ” driving heavy equipment for the Big Horn Coal Mine. He did this for more than 10 years. Bob was also a member of the First Baptist Church of Sheridan. Bob built the “dream house” for he and Tana out on Big Goose Road, west of Sheridan, salvaging the bricks himself from the old Sheridan Memorial Hospital and using those bricks to build the home along with his brother-in-law. He always “ran” a few cattle, was always building barns, repairing fence, “moving” irrigation water and working the land and bringing in his own hay on his tractor. He was a man in constant motion during “retirement” with projects, goals and was someone who enjoyed hard work. It was said often of Bob that he was a fair man and that each individual deserved his “day in court” and were not guilty until proven so. Bob and Tana Bradley were to celebrate 63 years of marriage on April 7, 2010. He is survived by his widow, Tana, of Sheridan; six children, Robert C. Bradley of Sheridan; David Bradley of Sheridan; Penny Mentock-Barkan (Dave) of Sheridan; Susan Bradley Woody (Stephen) of Montrose, Colo.; Mark Daniel Bradley (Chris), of Houston, Tex; Kevin Bradley (Cheryle) of Sheridan; ten grandchildren, William Bradley Woody of Montrose, Colo., Ryann Woody, of Montrose, Colo., Derek David Bradley of Montana; Jessica Price, Devon Johnston, Katy Whyard, all of Sheridan; Steven Michael Bradley, Catherine Clare Bradley, Jennifer Lynn Bradley, all of Houston; Christian Spencer Bradley of Sheridan; seven great-grandchildren, Megan Price, Bridgette Price, Bradley Price, Lola Johnston, Gunnar Whyard, Ryker Whyard, all of Sheridan and Wilson Stephen Woody of Montrose, Colo. Born December 11, 1921, to Robert E. and Lavina (Watson) Carroll, he attended Sheridan schools, the University of Wyoming and Colorado College. He joined the Sigma Nu fraternity during his college years. Dad attended Harvard for his naval communications training and served four years during World War II in the Navy, receiving a commission as ensign radioman second class. Much of his Navy time was spent in the Aleutians. Our dad loved Sheridan and often wrote home during the war voicing his desire to _get home and go up in the mountains_. He served his community over the years. He was a charter member of the YMCA, helping the fundraising for the current building. He was past president of the Linden PTA, selected by the governor as chairman of the civil defense committee, served on the city planning commission and was a past president, secretary and treasurer during his many terms on the School Board. More than anything, our father loved his family. He met Nelda Mae Olson during high school and they were married after the war on January 2, 1947. They had five daughters in seven years, which Dad claimed was the source of his hair loss. He taught us to fish, chop wood, dig up stumps, drive a stick shift, shoot a gun, swim, change a flat tire and chase down window peekers with croquet mallets! But most importantly, he taught us to love God and our family. His final words were about our mother. He repeatedly declared how much he loved her and that she was perfect. His great-grandson, Tripp Taylor passed away on Tuesday, March 23, 2010. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Clifford Carroll and Dr. Robert A.
