Joan Iris Jacobs
October 12, 1937 - April 30, 2010

Joan Iris Jacobs, 72, of Sheridan died at Sheridan Manor of cancer, which she fought valiantly for four and one half years. Joan was born October 12, 1937 in Sheridan, WY to Ralph Whitaker Jacobs and Dorothy Elizabeth (Sickler) Jacobs. The family lived in various houses on her grandparents (Ira and Rose Jacobs) ranch at Leiter, WY. She attended school at the Cadiz School until the family moved to Sheridan in the fall of 1946. In the spring of 1947, the family moved to Kendrick (4 miles from Leiter) living in a boxcar while their dad worked for the railroad and helped his father on the Jacobs ranch. In the summer of 1948 the family moved to Sheridan permanently where she attended grades 6-12 graduating from Sheridan High School in 1955. Following graduation Joan worked in Sheridan for the Sheridan branch of Ryan Wholesale Grocery Company, and then Pacific Finance Loans. In 1963 she moved to Billings, Montana where she worked for Ryan Wholesale Grocery and other wholesale grocers. In 1986, Joan returned to Sheridan and was employed in various secretarial positions, and then she worked as a receptionist at Westview Health Care Center from 1994 until retiring in 2000. Joan was proceeded in death by her parents, twin brother John Ira Jacobs in 2000, and sister, Elizabeth Reimers in 2002. Joan is survived by a sister Beverly Rhodes (Joe) of Sheridan; brother-in-law Gene Reimers of Sheridan; nieces Leslie Carter (Troy) of Sheridan, and Margaret Michelena of Clearmont, WY; nehpews: Clinton Reimers (Leslie), Jerry Reimers (Rebecca), Jack Jacobs all of Sheridan; Donald Reimers (Kim) of Jacksonville, FL., Cleve Jacobs (Shirley) of Weston, WY., Gregory Jacobs (Cindy) of Billings, MT., and numerous great nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 18, 2010, at the Sheridan Municipal cemetery. Cremation has taken place. Kane Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Elizabeth (Betty) Kennedy
October 23, 1915 - May 11, 2010

Elizabeth (Betty) Kennedy, age 94, passed on Tuesday, May 11, 2010 at Sheridan Manor. Elizabeth was born October 23, 1915 to James and Harriette (Clark) Flowers in Thedford, Nebraska. After graduating high school, she studied for her teaching degree in Nebraska. Elizabeth married O.H. Kennedy on December 21, 1940, in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. They had three sons. She enjoyed crocheting and travel and loved her family and friends. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband, a son David and two grandsons. She is survived by her son Joe (Jean) Kennedy of Sheridan and Bruce of Casper, Wyoming. Two sisters, Loretha Hitchcock of Washington and Helen Emig of Iowa. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, twenty two great grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren. Visitation will be at Bustards Funeral Home in Casper, Wyoming at 1:00 pm until 5:00 pm on Sunday, May 16, 2010 and Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 am Monday, May 17, 2010 at Bustards Funeral Home. Kane Funeral Home has been entrusted with local arrangements.

The Rev. Raymond C. Knapp
August 23, 1919 - May 3, 2010

The Rev. Raymond C. Knapp, 90, a long-time active resident of the Lodi community, changed his permanent address to Heaven on May 3, 2010. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Louise, in 1998 and his son-in-law, Richard Satterlee in 2009. Fr. Knapp was born in Acme, Wyoming August 23, 1919 and raised with his sister, Vera, in Sheridan, Wyoming. He earned his BA degree in English from Hastings College, Hastings, Nebraska and served in the Armed Forces (USAAF), in the Pacific Theater from June 1942 to October 1945. He married Louise Kidd November 4, 1945. He received his Master of Divinity from Philadelphia Divinity School in June 1949. He was ordained to the deaconate August 20, 1948 and the priesthood August 30, 1949 in Wyoming. He served as Vicar of St James Episcopal Church in Kemmerer, Wyoming and St Bartholomew's Episcopal Church in Cokeville, Wyoming; Rector of St Luke's, Buffalo, Wyoming; chaplain to Episcopal students at the University of Wyoming, in Laramie; Rector of the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, Delano, California; and Rector of St John the Baptist Episcopal Church in Lodi, California. Since retiring in 1987, he served 27 parishes and missions in the Diocese of San Joaquin as Supply Priest or Interim Priest, as well as Interim Chaplain for ST. Joseph's Medical Center in Stockton, CA. At the time of his 50th anniversary of ordination to the Priesthood, he was named Rector Emeritus of St John the Baptist in Lodi. During his 60+ years of ministry, Fr. Knapp served in many capacities in dioceses and communities. While in Lodi, he was instrumental in the inception of the Loel Center and served on the Board of Directors of the Loel Foundation as Vice-President for 10 years and President for 11 years. He was a member of the Lodi Rotary Club, S.T.A.R.S. program, the Order of St Luke (a Healing Order) since 1972, and was active in the Lodi Ministerial Association. He is survived by two daughters, Candy Satterlee of Cupertino, California and Melanie Knapp-Cook, along with her husband, CSM (P) Kevin M. Cook of Anchorage, Alaska where they are currently stationed; 3 grandchildren, Kevin Book-Satterlee (Leah), Jennifer Satterlee and Alexis (Lexi) Cook; and one great-granddaughter, Eliana Book-Satterlee. Fr. Knapp loved life and loved serving the Lord. In celebration of that, there will be a memorial Requiem Eucharist on May 30, 2010 at 3PM at St John the Baptist Episcopal Church in Lodi, California, 1055 S. Lower Sacramento Road, Lodi, CA 95242, with Bishop Jerry Lamb celebrating. interment of ashes and presenting of military honors will complete the service, followed by a reception, all at St John's. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. John's building fund with a designation for a plant or plaque to be placed in a future memorial garden.

Misty Marie Humphrey

Misty Marie Humphrey, 27, of Gillette, daughter of Trish Hartle of Sheridan and Randy Humphrey of Gillette, died Tuesday, May 11, 2010, at Campbell County Memorial Hospital of complications from diabetes, according to family. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. today at Gillette Memorial Chapel. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Friday at the chapel with the Rev. Peggy Brown officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Pisgah cemetery.

James H. Betz

James H. Betz, 63, of Buffalo died Monday, May 10, 2010, at Johnson County Healthcare Center. Funeral service is 2 p.m. Thursday at Adams Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jon Damaska officiating. Private burial is planned. Memorials may benefit the National Rifle Association c/o Adams Funeral Home, 351 N. Adams Ave., Buffalo, WY 82834.

John W. "Jack" Little
October 8, 1924 - May 9, 2010

Mass of Christian Burial and private military graveside rites for Jack Little, 85 year old Leiter resident man who passed away Sunday evening at the Sheridan Manor, will be celebrated Friday, May 14th at 10:00 a.m. from the St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Buffalo with Father Peter Johnson as celebrant. A vigil service will be held and a Rosary recited on Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m. from the Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Buffalo. Burial will be in Willow Grove cemetery with graveside services to follow the mass. Donations in Mr. Little's memory may be made to the Catholic Church in care of the Adams Funeral Home at 351 N. Adams in Buffalo. John William Little was born on October 8, 1924 in Sheridan, Wyoming to Philip S. and Theresa F. Little. He grew up in Leiter, Wyoming where he attended Yorkey-Gap Country School, Holy Name Junior High and graduated from Clearmont High School in 1942. After high school he attended Regis College in Denver. He joined the U.S. Army on June 22, 1943. He served three years in the Army with one year spent in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater during WWII. After his military service he worked as a brakeman and switchman for the Burlington Northern and the Northern Pacific Railroad and was a hand for several local ranches. In 1955 he and his brothers bought farm land adjoining their parent's ranch, later going into partnership with their father where Jack spent the next 60 years. He was married on October 4th, 1975 in Clearmont to Carmen Jean Lang and they made their home on the ranch in Leiter. Their son Sam was born on July 31, 1976 and the family continued living on the ranch. Mrs. Little passed away on Sept. 1, 1994 and Jack and Sam continued living on the ranch. He had been a resident of the Sheridan Manor for the past nine months. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Clearmont. Jack loved his ranch life, working with cattle and was an avid boxing fan. He is survived by one son, Sam Little of Buffalo; two brothers, Phil Little and his wife Glory and Pat Little and his wife Billie all of Leiter; one sister-in-law Alta May Satterthwait of Sheridan and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife and his parents.

John C. Evans
January 16, 1956 - May 8, 2010

John C. Evans, 54, of Sheridan, WY, died Saturday, May 8th, 2010 in Sheridan Manor. John fought a courageous battle of melanoma cancer for four months. Mr. Evans was born January 16th, 1956 in Willows, CA to John and Loree (Williams) Evans. John was raised all over the country, as his dad was a professional Navy man. He graduated from high school in California. He then went to work for a seismograph company and traveled though out the United States, eventually doing some work in the Sheridan area. It was here, he found a fondness for the mountains and the great outdoors. He met and married his first wife, Janet, and they moved to Gillette where he managed Mingles Bar. They then moved back to Sheridan, where he managed the VFW and the Big Horn Mountain Eagles. He and Janet then moved to Washington State, where they would eventually divorced. John moved back to Sheridan, where he met Kayleen McKinzie. They were engaged to be married . He received a nursing degree from Sheridan College, and was a registered nurse as a wound specialist at Sheridan Manor until his death. Mr. Evans was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, and spending time with friends in the mountains. A brother, Mike, of Oklahoma, preceded him in death. John is survived by his parents, his fianc', one son, Daniel of Minnesota, a sister Gail Abanathie, two brothers, Jim Evans and Greg Evans all of California and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 12th, 2010 at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the funeral service to follow at 2:00 p.m. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Helen Mae Miller
January 26, 1921 - May 4, 2010

Helen Mae Miller died May 4, 2010 at Sheridan, Wyoming where she had moved with her husband Robert E. Miller in May 2005 to be closer to family. She was 89 years of age, born January 26, 1921 at Portland, Oregon to Sidney A. and Idona I. Hatcher, nee Carroll. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and always had a smile on her face and a twinkle in her eye. An eternal optimist, she made everyone around her happy, too. Helen Mae grew up in Shelton, Washington where she studied and taught dance. She graduated from Shelton High School in 1939 where she was salutatorian and a graduation speaker. She attended the University of Oregon for three years before graduating from the University of Washington in 1943. After graduation, Helen Mae returned to Shelton to work for her father at Simpson Timber Company. In 1947 she went to Saudi Arabia to work; it was there that she met Robert E. Miller at a New Years Eve party and they each discovered that the other was an accomplished dancer. They returned to Shelton and were married in St. David's Episcopal Church on November 20, 1948. They remained in Shelton where her husband went to work for Simpson Timber Company and in 1956 were transferred to Humboldt County, California, settling in Arcata. In 1962 they were transferred back to Shelton, and then returned to Humboldt County in 1968 where they lived at Bayside and where Bob continued to work for Simpson until his retirement in 1980. Soon after retiring, the Millers spent nearly a year in The Philippines where Mr. Miller worked as an engineering consultant. In retirement, the Millers enjoyed traveling and spent their summers on Little Skookum Bay near Shelton. Helen Mae was active in various local and national organizations and particularly enjoyed helping young people further their education. She was a member of P.E.O. for 66 years, serving as the local chapter president at both Shelton and Arcata, and was an active member of Chapter B in Sheridan. She was a member of the American Association of University Women in Shelton, Arcata, and Sheridan. She was a Cub Scout den mother and for many years was a volunteer helper in the kindergarten at Jacoby Creek Elementary School near Arcata. Helen Mae loved her time in Sheridan: her friends at P.E.O., Oliver's for Sunday brunch with family, bridge at the Senior Center and with her special four-some, shows at the Wyo and Carriage House theaters, and time with her wonderful care-givers. She was a Christian, and was recently baptized at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Sheridan. She loved her visits from her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and sister Carol Jeanne. She is survived by three sons, Robert E. Miller (Sandra) of Shelton, Washington; Gary A. Miller (Susan) of Sheridan, Wyoming; and Ronald F. Miller of Madison, Wisconsin. She is also survived by three grandsons, Robert E. Miller (Theresa) of Sheridan, Wyoming and Bradley L. Miller (Anna) of Lacey, Washington, (sons of Robert E. Miller); and John A. Miller of Denver, Colorado, (son of Gary A. Miller). She is also survived by four great-grandchildren. She is also survived by three step-grandchildren, Edwin Hill (Denise) of Cumming, Georgia; Susan (Hill) Preissler (Michael) of Lewisville, Texas; and Robert Hill of Rock Springs, Wyoming, and six step-great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Carol Jeanne Moller of Tacoma, Washington and her large family. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 57 years, Robert E. Miller, in 2006. A memorial service will be held in Sheridan, Wyoming, at 1:00 p.m., June 10, 2010, at St. Peter's Episcopal Church followed by a gravesite service in Shelton, Washington. Christopher Cummins, 21, of Buffalo died Sunday, May 9, 2010, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Buffalo. Vigil service and rosary are 7 p.m. Wednesday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Buffalo. Mass of Christian Burial is 10 a.m. Thursday at the church with the Revs. Peter Johnson and Ron Stolcis officiating. Graveside services will follow in Willow Grove cemetery in Buffalo. Craig A. Scheckla
September 24, 1952 – May 2, 2010

Craig A. Scheckla, resident of Clam Gulch, AK and Sheridan, WY passed away Sunday at his home in Alaska. Craig was born in Portland, OR and was raised in northern California where he attended McKinleyville High School. He operated a successful trucking business with his former wife Karen for most of his adult life and was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. Craig was one of three children of Jim and Eleanor Scheckla. He is survived by his brothers Curt and Bart Scheckla. His children include one daughter Connie Scheckla and five step-children Dee Dee Isaacs, Tim, Leo, Rob, and Jack Goss. Craig also has 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Craig will be remembered for his passion of his trucking business and his hobbies of hunting and fishing. He loved having fun with friends and family and believed in living life to the fullest. Friends and Family are invited to attend a memorial service on Saturday, May 15, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at Holy Name Catholic Church with a reception following at the Sheridan Holiday Inn. Rosemary Eckel Skinner
July 21, 1931 – May 4, 2010

Rosemary Eckel Skinner died May 4, 2010 in Cheyenne, Wyoming. She was born in Great Falls, Montana, on July 21, 1931, the daughter of Edwin “Ed” and Genevieve Eckel. Shortly after her birth, the family moved to Sheridan, Wyoming, where Rosemary graduated from high school in 1949. She graduated from the University of Wyoming with a B.A. in Education in 1953. While attending the University of Wyoming she was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. She taught school in Glendora, California, from 1954 through 1955 and later did a short stint as a Flight Attendant with United Airlines. She married her husband of 46 years, C. Richard “Dick” Skinner, in 1956. From 1956 to 1970 Rosemary and Dick were busy raising their four children while living in Denver, CO; New Jersey; Miami, FL; and Houston, Texas. In 1970 they decided to move back to their home state of Wyoming and lived in Laramie where Dick was the executive director of the University of Wyoming Alumni Association. In 1975 they moved to Cheyenne where Dick became the Administrative Assistant for three-term Governor Ed Herschler. During this period Rosemary became very involved in the Cheyenne and Wyoming communities. Mrs. Skinner was a longtime active member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church. At one time she served as the president of the YWCA and was instrumental in the establishment of the Cottonwood Home for Unwed Mothers. She was an active member of PEO. She was on the National Advisory Board for the University of Wyoming Art Museum and a member of the Board of Directors for the UW Alumni Association. She was a Board Member for the Wyoming Children’s Society which provided assistance in the adoption of children. This is just a short list of the many philanthropic interests she was involved with. Rosemary enjoyed playing the piano, attending art class at LCCC, traveling and spending time with family and friends. Rosemary was a loving and dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She is survived by sons, Charles “Chuck” and wife Karin of Cheyenne; Jack and wife Dawn of Laramie; Rick and wife Amy of Anaheim, California; and daughter Elizabeth and husband Rick Hanson of Denver, Colorado. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, Cody, Courtney and Christy Skinner of Laramie; Charlie, Ned, Jack and Elizabeth Skinner of Anaheim, CA.; Max and Meg Hanson of Denver, CO.; and Jason Hoffman and Avalon Skinner of Cheyenne. She was preceded in death by her parents Ed and Genevieve Eckel and her husband of 46 years, Dick Skinner. Visitation will be held on Monday, May 10, 2010, from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. at the Schrader Funeral Home with a Vigil for the Deceased to follow at 6:00 p.m. at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church. A Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated on Tuesday, May 11th at 10:00 a.m. at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church. An interment service will follow at Olivet cemetery. Pallbearers will be Glen Oslund, Chuck Wing, Cody Skinner, Jason Hoffman, Charlie Skinner and Ned Skinner. Honorary pallbearers will be Jack Skinner and Max Hanson. Friends may contribute to the Herschler/Skinner Scholarship, Wyoming Children’s Society or Holy Trinity Catholic Church.

Martin B. Anderson
October 13, 1946 – May 6, 2010

Martin B. Anderson, 63, died May 6, 2010, at his home in Powell after a long, courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Sheridan on Oct. 13, 1946, the son of Tooney (Richmond) and John Gaddis Anderson. Martin’s early years were spent on the 41 Ranch near Buffalo. In 1955, his family moved to Big Horn. Martin graduated from Big Horn High School in 1964, and he then attended Sheridan College and the University of Wyoming. He joined the military in February 1968, and he served in the Vietnam War in the Army Regional Communications Group until September 1969. He received the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Army Commendation Medal. Martin married Diana McCoy in Sheridan on July 3, 1970, and then returned to the University of Wyoming to continue his education. They moved to Powell in the fall of 1971, and Martin worked for Amoco Production Company for 24 years at the Elk Basin Gas Plant. He retired as a shift foreman in February 1997. After retirement he took up the game of golf, which became a true passion. Martin loved instilling the love of the sport, mentoring others and receiving guidance from fellow golfers to improve his game. An avid fisherman, rafter and boater, he spent many hours on the waters of Wyoming and Montana with his family and friends. He was a member of the Powell Elks Club, where he served as Exalted Ruler. Martin also served as a junior and senior warden at St. John’s Episcopal Church, and he volunteered as a docent at the Buffalo Bill Historical Center. Martin was an inventor and problem solver. In 1986, he designed and helped build an addition to the family home that included solar features. His family will remember him as a fix-it person and a do-it-yourself kind of guy. Martin enjoyed meeting people and interacting with and learning about them. He adored his family and doted on his three grandchildren – Kendall Davis, Aubrey Davis and Alexander Anderson – who called him “Papa.” Martin often asked those close to him, “Have I told you today that I love you?” He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Henry Phipps and Ben Anderson. Martin is survived by his wife, Diana, of Powell; son Tim Anderson (Silvia) of Phoenix, Ariz.; daughter Richmond Davis (Shane) of Janesville, Wisc.; brothers John Anderson (Susan) of Lakewood, Colo. ; Lincoln Anderson (Natalia) of Boston, Mass., and Lawrence Phipps III of Elizabeth, Colo.; sister Richmond Phipps of Nosara, Costa Rica; his three grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be Thursday, May 13, 2010, at 2pm at St. John’s Episcopal Church, followed by burial at Crown Hill cemetery. A reception will follow at the Powell Elks Club. Memorial donations in Martin’s name may be made to the Heart Mountain Volunteer Medical Clinic, P.O. Box 1155, Powell, WY 82435. Thompson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
