Nicholas Dean Smith
August 9, 1981 – June 22, 2010

Nicholas Dean Smith, 28, of Fort Collins passed away Tuesday, June 22, 2010, at Poudre Valley Hospital after a brief illness. Nick was born on August 9, 1981, at PVH in Fort Collins, Colorado, to Duane and Laura Smith. He attended Heritage Christian Academy and graduated in 2000 as Valedictorian of his class. Nick majored in Mechanical Engineering at CSU and graduated Magna Cum Laud in December 2004. On June 10, 2006, Nick married Heather Lilley at First Baptist Church in Sheridan, Wyoming. He attended Resurrection Fellowship Church with his family and then First Baptist Church with his wife, Heather. Nick's relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ was an important part of his life. He arose early every morning to spend time reading his Bible and strove to be a spiritual leader to those around him. The evidence of Nick's kindness and faith was easily seen in the outpouring of love and support that his family received during his illness. Nick was enthusiastic about all of life, and enjoyed playing soccer, hockey, as well as hunting and fishing. He was employed at Pure Energy in Boulder for the past two years as a Mechanical Design Engineer. Nick was passionate about his work and dreamed of running his own engineering firm. He received the news that he passed the Professional Engineer’s Exam recently. Nick delighted in caring for his wife, Heather, in every way he could. His joy in marriage was felt on a daily basis and created a home that was filled with love and happiness. His strong, tender heart extended to his parents and sisters, with whom he always loved to laugh, tease and spend time. He honored his mother and father, and was never bashful of showing affection to his parents in public. Nick was thrilled to become a father in October and looked forward to all the things that he hoped to teach his little son. Nick will be dearly missed by his loving family, wife, Heather and unborn son, William Dean “Liam”; parents, Duane and Laura Smith; and sisters, Gretchen (Justin) Topel, Kathryn Smith, and Natalie Smith. He is also survived by in-laws, Bill and JoAnn Lilley, sister-in-law, Stephanie Lilley (Micah) Howe; and grandparents, Bessie Smith, Wilbur Garrels, and Lela Hadrava. Nick’s family wishes to thank the Doctors and Nurses in ICU at PVH for their outstanding care and genuine attentiveness, and also to family and friends for all their thoughts and prayers. A Funeral Service will be held 1:00 pm Saturday, June 26th at First Baptist Church in Fort Collins, followed by a private family burial at Grandview cemetery. A fund has been set up for Nick’s unborn son, Liam. Shirley Matney
June 27, 1922 – April 21, 2010

The family of former Sheridan resident, Shirley Matney, will gather this weekend in Tremonton, Utah to celebrate her life. Mrs. Matney passed away April 21, 2010 in Maple Plain, Minnesota. She was born June 27, 1922 in Tremonton, Utah to Ruth and Gifford Watland. She attended Utah State University and married Thomas Matney on February 14, 1944, settling in Tremonton, Utah to establish an accounting business and raise their family. In 2000, Shirley moved to Sheridan to live near her daughter Julie and family, and in 2008 moved to Minnesota to be near daughter Susanne. She was preceded in death by her husband, her son, Tom, and a granddaughter, Holly Linford. She is survived by daughters Julie Weitz (Mark), Sheridan, Marianne Valenta (Frank), Lake Jackson, Texas; Susanne Shuler (Alan), Plymouth, Minnesota; daughter-in-law, Carol Matney, Eugene, Oregon; 9 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. She was an accomplished pianist and an avid bridge player who loved to golf, embroider, garden, and entertain. Shirley's legacy continues through her lovely handiwork, her outstanding cooking, and her musical talent. Memorial Services will be held Saturday, June 26, 2010 at Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Brigham City, UT.

Deck Hunter
February 24, 1928 – June 22, 2010

Deck Hunter, 82, of Sheridan, formerly Big Horn, passed away June 22, 2010, following a short battle with Cancer. Deck was born February 24, 1928 in Sussex, NJ to Martin and Ethel (Ewald) Decker. She met her husband Bob Hunter while attending college in Boston, MA. They married June 10, 1950. She retired from education having been a high school librarian in Bellbrook, Ohio and a teacher at both University of Dayton and Wright State University in their outdoor education departments. Deck was an avid camper, backpacker, climber and birder. She spent many years with Girl and Boy Scouts teaching backpacking, being a troop leader and taking scouts on trips from Ohio to points across the United States including Wyoming, Mount Washing in NH and Borah Peak in Idaho. She was a wilderness ranger for the Big Horn National Forest Service for several seasons and a long time volunteer at the Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library. She wrote several books on Big Horn and Sheridan County history as well as a weekly column Backyard Chatter for the Sheridan Press for seven years. She truly loved the state to which she and Bob retired. Deck was preceded in death by her parents and brother Martin Jr. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, a daughter Lyn Reinig of Sweet, ID, granddaughter Yavohne Gallagher of San Antonio, TX and Jany Reinig of Boise, ID as well as 3 great grandchildren. Cremation has taken place through Kane Funeral Home. No services will be held. Per Deck’s wishes instead please spend time with a loved one or enjoy a moment in a special place. As for Deck -

Eileen F. Burr
March 19, 1922 – June 20, 2010

Eileen F. Burr, 88, of Sheridan, passed away on Sunday, June 20, 2010 in ICU at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan. She was born on March 19, 1922 on the Flag L Ranch Crazy Women Creek, Arvada, Wyoming to Grace (Walker) and Frank Eads. Eileen’s first schooling along with her siblings was held in the farm bunkhouse. The family provided room and board for the teacher. They moved to Buffalo where she attended seventh and eighth grade and then to Sheridan, finishing High School in 1939. She then went on to graduate from Sheridan Beauty College and owned her own beauty salon in Gillette, WY. Eileen married Chuck Burr on June 20, 1942. She enjoyed bowling, crocheting, gardening, traveling and camping. Eileen was preceded in death by her parents, brother Warren Eads and grand daughter Stephanie Burr. She is survived by her husband of 68 years, children Jim (Jolene), Janis (Ed) Legerski, Barb (Bob) Elmore of Sheridan and Ron (Tammy) of Buffalo, seven grand children and 3 great grand kids, along with her siblings Jim Eads of Sheridan and Iris (Frank) Meaker of Montrose, CO. Cremation has taken place and a Celebration of her life for family and friends will be at a later date. Kane Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Ina M. Piper

Ina M. Piper, 79, of Gillette, mother of Lisa Wood of Sheridan, died Friday, June 18, 2010, in Campbell County Memorial Hospital in Gillette. Funeral service is 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Moorcroft with Pastor Duane Simonson officiating. Visitation is one hour before service. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery in Upton. Arrangements are with Walker Funeral Home in Gillette.

The Rev. Robert Palmer and Susan Palmer

Burial of cremains and graveside services for former Sheridan residents the Rev. Robert J. Palmer and his daughter, Susan Elizabeth Palmer, are 2 p.m. Wednesday in Sheridan Municipal cemetery with Pastors Doug Melius and Brian Johnson officiating. The Rev. Palmer died at his Estes Park, Colo., home on Sept. 2, 2009. Susan Palmer died at her home in Estes Park on Sept. 4, 2009. A reception for family and friends will follow the service at First Presbyterian Church. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Karl A. Smith
1936 - 2010

Karl A. Smith, age 73, long time resident of Pensacola, died peacefully at his home, Sunday, June 13, 2010. Karl enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1955 and retired in 1982, Karl served as a Navy Seabee at various locations throughout the world, including a tour in Vietnam, three tours in Antarctica, Midway Island, Diego Garcia, Rota Spain and ending as an exam writer at Saufley Field, Pensacola, FL. After retiring, Karl worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a mail handler for 16 years. Karl enjoyed spending time with his family and watching purple martins and other various birds in the backyard. He was preceded in death by his parents, George H. Smith, and Sarah Elizabeth 'Betty' Smith, of Sheridan, WY, and his brothers, Boe Smith and Curtis Smith of Denver, CO. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Colleen W. Smith of Pensacola, FL; son, Roy 'Neil' (Rhodonna) Smith of West Hamlin, WV; son, Zane (Kathleen) Smith of Pensacola, FL; daughter, Dorraine (Robert) Relova of Pensacola; and son, Marty (Kim) Smith of Montgomery, AL. Karl is also survived by his three brothers George Smith of Gillette, WY, Gary Smith of Sacramento, CA, and David Smith of Castlerock, CO; his four nephews, Curtis Smith of Maricopa, AZ, Edwin Smith of Paulden, AZ, Allen Smith of Sheridan, WY, and Michael Smith of Gilbert, AZ; and seven grandchildren, Kerrie Mabry; Keelan Relova, Mathew Smith, Christian Relova, Felisha Smith, Megan Smith and Alexander Smith. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 22, 2010 from 8:30-9:30 a.m. at Trahan Family Funeral Home followed by a procession to Barrancas National cemetery, NAS, Pensacola, FL for a service with full Military Honors. Maria Isabel (Maribel) Taylor
December 12, 1919 – June 10, 2010

Maria Isabel (Maribel) Taylor, 90, of Sheridan passed away on June 10, 2010 at Sheridan Manor. She was born on December 12, 1919 in Zaragoza, Spain to Antonia Clemente and Jose Alegre. Maria Isabel married Oran William Taylor on January 18, 1959 in Pisaqua, Chile. Oran was a geophysicist and this position allowed them to live in 26 different countries and learn different languages. Along with travel Maria Isabel enjoyed cooking, sewing, entertaining, gardening and many sports, hiking, fishing, tennis and snowmobiling. Together they owned the Holiday Lodge for many years in Sheridan, WY. Maria Isabel was officially born Isabel Alegre y Clemente but was known most of her life as Maria Isabel or Maribel to her many friends. She officially changed her name to Maria Isabel Taylor when becoming a U.S. Citizen on July 6, 1993. Maria Isabel was preceded in death by her parents, and husband. She is survived by her grand niece Susana Susan, wife of Ignacio Estable: their children: Susana, Sandra, and Ignacio all from Zaragoza, Spain. By marriage she is survived by her grand niece Leta Edge, wife of Scott and their son Wyatt all from Odessa, Texas; step daughter Judy T. Lucas, wife of James, from Winter Park, Florida and sister-in-law Fayenelle Hibbs, from Odessa, Texas. Extended family includes Angie Ketcham, Mary and Servio Carroll and daughters: Wendy, Kelly and Shea; and Oscar J. Rojo all from Sheridan. A Funeral Mass for Maria Isabel will be on Tuesday, June 22, 2010 at 10:00 at Holy Name Catholic Church with Father Ron Stolcis officiating. Inurnment will be in the Masonic Section at Sheridan Municipal cemetery following the service. A reception will follow at the parish hall immediately following. Dewain M. Zeglin
June 22, 1931 – June 10, 2010

Dewain M. Zeglin, 78, of Sheridan, WY died Thursday, June 10, 2010, in his Sheridan home. Dewain was born June 22, 1931, on the family farm near Anthon, Iowa, to Fred & Ruby (Fixsel) Zeglin.
Dewain grew up on the farm, attended country school and graduated from high school in Anthon. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where after basic training he went to weather school and then served in Japan during the Korean War. After the service, he returned home to work the farm. Dewain married Diane Newman in 1955. They later divorced. He went to work for the U.S. Weather Service in Huron, S. Dakota and later transferred to Sheridan in 1964. Dewain married Shirley Hall on December 28, 1971. He worked for the weather service until he retired in 1993. After retirement, he worked part time as a weather spotter. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and Elks Lodge #520. Dewain enjoyed going to his cabin, fishing, hunting and spending time with family and friends. Dewain was preceded in death by his parents. Dewain is survived by his wife Shirley; sons Fred Zeglin & wife Colleen of Kalispell, MT, Greg Hall & wife Michelle of Vail, CO and Lonn Hall of Sparks, NV; daughters Pam Rapp & husband Bill of Sheridan and Teresa Hall & husband Doug Rager of Snowmass, CO; sister JoAnn Bengford & husband Scott of Ft. Collins, CO; seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Memorial service will be 11:00am on Saturday (June 19th) at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Don Derryberry officiating. Inurnment will be in Sheridan Elks cemetery with Elks Lodge officers officiating and military rites by the Wyo. National Guard and American Legion. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Memorials may benefit First United Methodist Church.

Nancy Ellen Cooley
January 10, 1937 – May 30, 2010

Nancy Ellen Cooley, 73, of Sheridan passed away May 30, 2010 in Casper. Nancy was born to Helen (Adams) Bryan and Harry Adams. Nancy married her husband of 53 years Philip Leroy Cooley in Dayton, Wyoming and moved to Idaho where she had her first child JoLynn. When they moved to South Dakota she had her second child Douglas Andrew. Since her husband was in the Air Force they got to travel all over the United States. They lived in Idaho, South Dakota, Colorado, Illinois, California, Wyoming, Maine and Guam. Every time they moved they got to see every tourist stop, National Park, and roadside sign to historical sites. They stopped at several museums and even stopped to see the Indianapolis Racetrack just to say they saw it. When she lived in Maine they went camping in Canada on weekends and went to Prince Edward Island. She was involved in Beta Sigma Phi in the 60’s and 70’s. In 1974 they moved to Guam and she and her daughter were volunteers during the Indo-Chinese evacuation. She loved to go to the beach and collected hundreds of seashells while walking along the beach. She traveled to Hong Kong with a friend and got to travel to Korea with her family. Nancy graduated from the Business College in Billings, Montana and worked at several offices on bases and several schools. After her husband retired in 1978 from the Air Force they moved to Sundance Wyoming where she and her family took care of the Carnegie Ranch. In 1985, she and her husband moved to Sheridan, where she began working at the Wyoming Girls School as a house mother. When she retired she began to do more sewing, cross stitching, and crafts of all types. She really loved being a Grandma and had three Grandchildren, Andrew William Swenson of Gillette, Barbara Jo Cooley of Dubois, and Judy (Trent) Rodgers of Jackson Hole. She is survived by her husband Philip Cooley of Sheridan, her sister Wendy (John) Norskog of Billings, her daughter JoLynn (Keith) Swenson of Gillette, son Douglas (Becky) Cooley of Dubois, and several nieces and nephews and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. She was preceded in death by her mother Helen, father, Harry, brother, Randy Adams and sister-in-law Rene of Big Horn and a granddaughter, Whitney Rae Swenson of Gillette, mother-in-law, Grace Kepp Cooley and father –in-law Wilbur Russell Cooley of Dayton Wyoming. Cremation and services have been held in Dayton cemetery, Dayton Wyoming.

R. Gordon ‘Doc’ Quarve

R. Gordon “Doc” Quarve, 82, stepfather of Gary “Bo” Deveraux of Sheridan, died Thursday, June 10, 2010, of natural causes at his home in Gillette. A memorial service is 1 p.m. today at Pioneer Manor Nursing Home in Gillette. In lieu of flowers, donations may benefit a charity of the donor’s choice in care of Walker Funeral Home, 410 Medical Arts Court, Gillette, WY 82716.

Howard Leon Apel
December 2, 1930 – June 10, 2010

Howard Leon Apel was born to Harold Eugene and Lucia Anna (Werner) Apel on December 2, 1930 in Casper, Wyoming. He graduated from Natrona County High School in 1948. In 1952, he married the love of his life, Roma Jean Weaver at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Casper, Wyoming and would have celebrated 58 years together this July. Together, they share three children: Roxanne Apel Araas (Fred Araas) of Sheridan, Ron Eugene Apel of Sheridan and Jerrold Fredrick Apel of Story. Howard was a veteran of the Wyoming Army National Guard, serving over 23 years and achieving the rank of First Sergeant before retiring as a Master Sergeant. He served in Bravo Company 115th Mechanized Cavalry and Headquarters Battery 3rd of the 49th Field Artillery. Before serving in the National Guard, Howard completed three years of Junior ROTC at Natrona County High School, and at the age of 15 became a member of the Wyoming State Militia. Most of his life, Howard worked as a chemist in the oil and coal industry. He was employed with the Mobil Oil Refinery in Casper and Seattle, as well as Reynolds & Texaco at Lake DeSmet and in Ontario, California. During his career as a chemist, he received numerous accolades including recognition for over 20 years of active participation on the ASTM D-5 Committee on Coal and Coke. Howard was an accomplished craftsman. In 1967, he built the family home in Story, Wyoming, where they resided throughout his life. While serving as an appointed member on the Story Planning Advisory Board, he helped to establish the first emergency system for Story by drafting town maps and plotting the quickest routes to locate all of Story’s residents. He was a member of the Story School Board, the Story Community Library Board, the Story PTA, the Lions Club, and the Elks Club in both Sheridan and Casper. He was a devoted member and participant on the parish council of Our Lady of Pines Catholic Church, volunteering much of his personal time and abilities to the upkeep and maintenance of the church. Howard performed as a volunteer fireman and EMT. He served as president for the Wyoming Ambulance and Emergency Medical Services Association (WAEMSA). Howard was an avid hunter and fisherman, who enjoyed teaching his grandsons how to fish in his handmade pond. He enjoyed studying family genealogy and the history of local battlefields. Countless hours were spent prospecting for gold with his metal detector and adding to his coin collection. He always welcomed and enjoyed a challenging game of cribbage, bridge or Poker.. Howard possessed a uniquely witty sense of humor and was a constant tease to everyone he met. He was very much loved by his family and greatly respected by everyone who had the fortune of being his acquaintance. His strong work ethics, faith, high morals, respect for our country, mischievous smirk and love for life will greatly be missed, and will influence his family "FOREVER AND EVER." Howard is preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Fred, and sister, Agnes Lovelace. He is survived by his wife, children, four grandchildren: Ryan Joseph Araas (Shelly), Christopher Howard Apel, Robert Leon Araas and Curtis Matthew Apel all of Sheridan; and three great-grandchildren, Tyra, Liberty and Caleb Araas. Christian Wake Service will be held at Kane Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 16th, at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 17th, at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of the Pines Catholic Church located in Story, Wyoming with Father Thomas Ogg officiating. Graveside services, with military honors, will immediately follow at the Quiet Rest cemetery of Kearney (Story). After services, a reception celebrating Howard’s life will be held at the Story Women’s Club. Howard Sorensen
September 9, 1920 – June 8, 2010

Howard Sorensen, 89, of Sheridan passed away at Memorial Hospital on Tuesday, June 8, 2010. Howard was born September 9, 1920 in Omaha, NE to Arther and Edith Lawson Sorensen. He grew up on ranch near Newcastle, WY and his family later moved to Sheridan. He graduated from Sheridan High School. After graduating Howard joined the army and was stationed state side in the last remaining regiment of the army horse cavalry. Later, when the horse cavalry was disbanded Howard served abroad in the Philippines. He was honorably discharged as a sergeant. After returning to Sheridan, Howard trained as a mechanic and worked at garages. He then worked at Decker Coal as a mechanic for 24 years. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church. Howard was a devoted husband to his wife Estelle "Essie." They were married May 26, 1963. Essie preceded Howard in death in 2003. Although Howard and Essie did not have any children together, they befriended many people in Sheridan and beyond, and were deeply loved and appreciated for their warmth and kindheartedness. Howard had a very close and loving relationship with his sisters Shirley Willet (who preceded him in passing) and Lorraine Husman who lives in Story, WY. Howard loved the outdoors and hobbies. He deeply appreciated the Bighorn Mountains’ beauty and enjoyed fishing and hunting. Howard enjoyed playing cribbage, and received the exceedingly rare 29 hand a year prior to his death. Howard will be most remembered for his woodworking. He was a very accomplished woodworker known for producing fine quality furniture and lathe turned bowls. He salvaged most of the wood locally from felled trees. His craftsmanship is still enjoyed by those who own a piece of his work, and is symbolic of his pursuit of quality in all aspects of his life. Diether Herman van Houten
February 8, 1940 – June 7, 2010

Diether Herman van Houten, 70, Rapid City, passed away Monday, June 7, 2010 at his residence in Rapid City. Diether was born on February 8, 1940, in Wageningen, Netherlands, to Herman J. van Houten and Rudolphina Enger. He attended elementary, middle school, and high school in Amsterdam, but graduated from high school at Colegio Americano in Caracus, Venezuela. With a degree in agricultural science, Diether graduated from the University of Wyoming, Laramie, in 1963. He earned his master’s degree in political science and public administration from the University of South Dakota, Vermillion in 1983. Diether enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1963 and was commissioned in 1965. He retired with 25 years of service in 1988. During his military career, he was a photo interpreter, an intelligence officer, and a missile launch officer. He was stationed at Ellsworth AFB in the 68th SMS from 1977-1981. He was a Vietnam vet with tours in Korea, Okinawa, and Thailand. Following his retirement from the military, Diether served as a Certified Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor for the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation for the state of Wyoming from 1990-2008 in Sheridan, WY. Diether met and married his wife, Janet Fast in 1970 in Denver, CO. They met at a Bible study for military officers. Two sons were born to the couple in Omaha, NE. During his college years, Diether accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, and this relationship continued to be of prime importance to him. He was active in his church and other religious organizations. Diether was a volunteer in the office of Love, INC. He was a member of Christian Motorcyclists Association, Gideons International, Wycliffe Associates, Calvary Baptist Church, and Military Officers Association of America. His other interests included model railroading, history, motorcycles, reading, and computers. Diether is survived by his wife, Janet; sons, Mark D. (Uliana) van Houten of Sheridan, WY, and Douglas J. van Houten of Victor, ID; and surrogate parents, Robert and Betty Twing of Buffalo, WY. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Rudolphina van Houten; and brother, Rutger Arn van Houten. Memorials have been established in his memory for Gideons International, Christian Motorcyclists Association, and Wycliffe Bible Translators. Memorial services will be Monday, June 14, 2010 at 11:00am at Calvary Baptist Church in Rapid City with Pastors Steve Lindsay and Mike Causey officiating. Inurnment will follow at Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis, SD at 2:30pm with Ellsworth Air Force Base Honor Guard providing military honors.
